Unable to access Airpor Express for printing or sound

I am re-setting up a home network with an Airport Extreme base station and two airport express stations I'm using to expand the network. Though the network is working fine and I am able to set up a printer attached to one of the airport expresses, I am unable to actually print to it. Also, I have speakers connected to the same base station; when I try to play audio from iTunes to that base station, it tries but eventually fails to connect.
Again, I'm able to see all of the stations in Airport Admin. The only problem I'm experiencing is printing and sound.
Thanks for any help on this.

How are your base stations configured?
My guess is that they're all running NAT and so you effectively have three wireless networks. In this case you will have problems accessing the services attached to a remote base station.
The solution is to collapse all the base stations into a single, unified network. The specifics on how to do this will depend on what else is on your network and, most importantly, what is handling your external connectivity. If you have a separate router (e.g. cable or DSL) that is at your network edge, then just change all the base stations to be simple wireless bridges (or access points) rather than full routers. In this way you have one big network inside your router that everyone should be able to see fully.
That is only a guess, though, based on the limited information available, so don't just blindly change the configurations without checking first.

I do not need another wireless network but want to use the airport express for printer access only.  Can this be done and how?

You can configure the AirPort Expess to "Join a wireless network" and enable the Ethernet port so that Ethernet devices will be able to connect.
In order to print from the iOS devices, you will need to have an application like Printopia installed on your Mac. The Mac must be active when you want to print.
More details here: Printopia - AirPrint to Any Printer - Print from iPad - Print from iPhone ...
There is a free trial available for Printopia, so make sure that it will work before you buy the AirPort Express.

  • Express for printing via iMac sharing

I'm having trouble with this ... not sure why.
I have a 3.5 year old Express (had 2 until yesterday when one simply died ... won't switch on at all).
I have a 'homeplug' network, connecting 4 Macs upstairs to a dsl router downstairs. Works fine.
I want to use my remaining Express for printing only ... connecting a USB and an IP printer. This means I can't use an ethernet cable to connect the Express to the network.
So ... I thought I could join the Express to the network, by turning ON Internet sharing via Airport on one of the computers.
Unfortunately ... using the Airport Utility in 10.5.3, I just cannot seem to make this work. I always end up with flashing amber. I'm guessing this is because the Express isn't getting an IP address ... but I'm not sure.
Can anyone tell me how I should be doing this?
    ALSO !!
When I share the connection from one of the Macs, it creates a airport network with that Mac's name ... when I look in the Airport Menu, it doesn't have a 'padlock' icon next to it. Does this mean it's open for anyone to use??? Or perhaps it just means that all the Macs that are already on the network already have keychain access?
How do I ensure security (very important since my wife works on some sensitive stuff).
    Thanks for any help/pointers,

    Thanks Duane,
that explains why I couldn't get it to work.
Stupidly, but probably typically, the reason for trying to work the solution this way, is a 'furniture' problem. IOW, where the printers happen to be located. Before the other Express died, it was plugged into the dsl router and fed the second Express, so all worked fine.
Ironically, I think that this break down, is going to push me further down the road of homeplug. Apple should really take the next vs of the Express this way. It is such a great solution. You can thread a network throughout even a large building, with incredible ease ... and ... without loosing throughput.
I think I will resolve this issue with another homeplug, instead of another Express.

  • How do I access compacted mail on a Mac version 10.5.8 stuck with Thunderbird version 16.0.2 ? I am unable to access needed documentation for Taxes, etc

How do I access compacted mail on a Mac version 10.5.8 stuck with Thunderbird version 16.0.2 ? I am unable to access needed documentation for Taxes, etc

Where in the world did you read Deleting All My Mail? I have reread my answer several times and cannot seem to find that in there.
When you mark a message for deletion it does just that. It marks it for deletion and hides the message. It is not truly deleted until you compact.
My point is that unless you deleted your important mail they should still be there somewhere.
Your question was about compacting and thinking it put your messages in a nice little box for safe keeping and now you want to open it.
I have to agree that Thunderbird did a horrible job of naming this process because most are like you and do not understand what it actually does. I included the link to the explanation of what compacting means in the Thunderbird world.
Your messages may still be available to your but finding them has nothing to do with compacting.
Thunderbird does not archive anything unless you use that process by selecting the message and pressing a. You have the option to setup where you want that archive to go and what folders to make.
The All Mail folder is a goofy gmail arrangement. If you have problems with that then you need to address that with Google.
If you go into your gmail account on the gmail site do you see the messages you are hunting in the All Mail folder there?

No, this is nothing to be concerned with. Assuming you have auto-client push enabled, it will try to push the client agent to a resource without the agent every hour for 7 days. Thus, after the 7 day period expires from the last time it was discovered,
it won't try to push to this system anymore.

  • WRT54GL unable to access wired shares or printer on PC from wireless iMac

The subject line applies to a new router on which I can access the internet ok both from the wired PC and the wireless iMac.
The problem is this router is unable to access the PC shares or printer from the iMac. Pls note, "this router"!
I have an identical WRT54GL v1.1, same firmware, setup is identical on both, one works with no problem, but the new one has the above problem..
I have spent a day on it and its in line for return on Monday, but I still hope for a miracle tip which may sort it out :-)
On the good one 'Port scan' of the PC from iMac gives me:
    Port Scan has started ...
    Port Scanning host: 192.168.1.100
    Open TCP Port: 139
    Open TCP Port: 445
while the faulty one gives me:
    Port Scan has started ...
    Port Scanning host: 192.168.1.100
    ..and thats it! No contact.
Yes, the router is set up for 'Lan & Wireless' (no way to change that setting to 'WAN only' it seems, it bounces back to 'Lan & Wireless')
I have btw done a Factory Reset on it (twice) with no joy.
    Any ideas anyone?
    Mvh

My first guess for this kind of problem would be a software firewall on the computer. The firewall will detect where it is connected and configures the settings depending on the location. Two routers are two different "locations". Try turning off the firewall or even better deinstall it as often some parts of those software firewalls are still active when turned off.
The only option that does affect access of wireless clients to the LAN is the "AP Isolation" option on the "Advanced Wireless Settings". That should be off.
Another thing you could try if you like: do a configuration backup on the working router and restore it to the faulty one. Maybe there are some settings that don't match and that you cannot configure through the web interface. Have you ever used a 3rd party firmware on either of the routers?

  • Using AP Express for Printing ONLY

    Hey Discussions,
I want to purchase an Airport Express for the sole purpose (right now) of printing. Is it possible to use the Express without an Internet connection?
    Thanks,
    Mateo

Yes, you can use it as a client to an existing wireless network for printing or streaming iTunes.
AirPort Express Base Station (AX) - Client Mode Setup
    - Plug the AX into a power outlet.
    - On your computer, join the wireless network created by AX.
    - Open AirPort Admin Utility. (Mac users: Find it in /Applications/Utilities/. Windows users: On the Start menu, point to All Programs and click AirPort.)
    - After AirPort Admin Utility opens, the name of your AX appears in the list. Select it, then click Configure.
    - Enter the administrator password if prompted.
    - Click the AirPort tab.
    - Enter a name for your AX in the Name field. (This name is how it will appear in AirPort Admin Utility; it may be different from the AirTunes remote speaker name. (Note that AirPort Setup Assistant does not allow you to differentiate these names, but AirPort Admin Utility does.)
    - If your AX does not already have an administrator password, click the Change Password button to enter one. This password can be different from any network password, and is used for just changing settings on AX.
    - In the same pane, under the AirPort Network heading, change the Wireless Mode from "Create a Wireless Network (Home Router)" to "Join an Existing Wireless Network (Wireless Client)."
    - Type the name of the wireless network you want to join in the Network Name field. (Note: If you're using AirPort Admin Utility in Mac OS X, you may be able to choose the network from a pop-up menu. This is the name (or SSID) of your current wireless network with the Trendnet router.)
    - If the wireless network is password protected, you will need to enter the password. (Mac users: Click Security Options, choose the level of password encryption from the Wireless Security pop-up menu, then enter the password. When finished, click OK. Windows users: Click Wireless Security, choose the level of password encryption from the Wireless Security menu, then click "Set WEP Password" to enter the password. When finished, click OK.)
    - Click the Music tab to enter the name that will appear in iTunes as your AirTunes remote speakers. You can also enter a password to prevent others from streaming music to your speakers.
    - Finally, click Update to send your new settings to AX.
Once the AX has had a minute or so to restart, it should join the existing wireless network, as indicated by its status light turning solid green.

I've created an image for computers at my school. When I go into System Preferences>Accounts, and authenticate, I am unable to access the Login Items tab. The tab isn't grayed out or anything. • Can I use Ethernet for Internet connection and Airport express for printer

How / can I use Ethernet for Internet connection and use an airport express to set up wifi for printer and Apple TV?
    Macbook Pro. OS X 10.9.4

I've never tried it, so I don't know what the results will be.
However, you can move Ethernet to the top of the Services list in Network System Prefs which will cause it to be the Internet source. There is a command in the gear menu to set the Service order.  However, after thinking about it, if there isn't an internet connection via Wi-Fi, it might automatically drop down to the Ethernet connection.
Then, you can set up your Wi-Fi so that it doesn't connect to the Internet, as Linc stated. How to do that would be dependent on the Router.

  • Setup Airport Express for printing with Samsung CLX-3185FW

I have bought an Airport Express which I was told I could connect my printer to so we can print from our iPad, iPhones and iPods.
Does anybody have any instructions on how to do this so I can access the printer on my ios devices to print?  It might be best for me to start from the beginning.
(I have already tried to connect the AX by extending the network but there is an error message coming up saying it was unable to extend the wireless network.  I also tried to join an existing network but I didn't have any luck there either.  I installed Airport Utility on my PC and I could see the printer under the printers options but now when I open the Aiport Utility, it doesn't even find that I have an AX!).  I'm not havin much luck with it.  Any assistance on how to start fresh and set it all up would be appreciated. Thanks, Jason

....I was told I could connect my printer to so we can print from our iPad, iPhones and iPods.
Unfortunately, the information that you received is not correct.
In order to print from iOS devices, you need to have an AirPrint compatible printer.  Your Samsung model is not on the list of AirPrint compatible devices.  See this Apple support document for more details:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4356
Adding or ssing an AirPort Express will not make your printer AirPrint compatible
As a possible workaround, Installing an App like Print Central on each of your iOS devices might allow you to print from the iOS devices to the printer.

  • Can I use Airport Express for printing and Ethernet printing at same time?

I've been trying to set up a couple of laser printers that were given to me recently. The printers are Apple LaserWriter 16/600 PS and Samsung CLP-510. The reason I'd like to have both up and running is because the black toner for the Samsung costs twice as much as the toner for the LaserWriter. I have two questions that I am hoping someone will be able to answer.
    1) The CLP prints a test page just fine. I was finally able to get the Samsung printing while directly connected to my PowerBook G4 via usb (I had to install a Xerox Phaser 6100 driver to do so!). Today I tried putting the usb into my Airport Express (which I use for my portable internet and airtunes) and now the printer does not respond. When I try to add the CLP as a bonjour printer, I get an error adding the printer and the printer does not respond. Can someone offer some advice as to how and if the CLP may work via the Airport Express?
    2) The LaserWriter prints a test page just fine. I purchased a transceiver (albeit not an Apple transceiver - this one says Asante Friendlynet, the guy I bought it from said it would work though). The transceiver is connected to the Ethernet port on the printer - and I have a yellow ethernet cable (?) running from the transceiver to the ethernet port on my computer. I read somewhere on the internet that I need to turn on Appletalk in order to use the printer via ethernet but when I went into my network settings to do that, there was a warning that I could not turn on appletalk for ethernet without forsaking my airport. Can someone offer some advice as to how and if the 16/600 PS may work via ethernet without disrupting my (working) airport express? Also - I did not receive any software or drivers with this printer but I read that I may not need to (they come with Tiger - ?) Is anyone able to confirm this?
Any help would be TOTALLY appreciated!
    Leigh-Ann

Hello Kappy! Thank you for taking the time to reply to my question.
I should update you at this point to say that I can add the 16/600 PS printer through a process that I found called 'Direct IP printing over ethernet'. (I think I've done this correctly - but I honestly have no idea about network stuff). Here's what I did:
-went into system prefs and looked at the network settings under built-in ethernet tab. Under TCP-IP I found the IP address of my network host.
-In the Printer Setup Utility I tried to manually add the 16/600 PS printer. In the Printer Browser window, I selected IP Printer.
-Under IP printer, I selected LPD Protocol. I inserted the IP address copied from my network settings (above) in the address bar. In the Queue bar I typed in the name of the printer 'Apple LaserWriter 16/600 PS'.
-Again in the Printer Browser box I gave the printer a name and location. Finally, in the 'print using' box I selected Apple and then chose the model from the drop down list. 'Apple LaserWriter 16/600 PS fax v.2014.016'
-I got a dialogue box that asked about other installable features - clicked ok.
-when I tried to print a Word document, the Apple LaserWriter driver opened up and appeared in my dock and then I got an immediate error saying "network host ---.---.--.--- is busy, down, or unreachable..."
-I tried to repair permissions, but it did not resolve my issue.
-I noticed that even after adding the 16/600, it did not show up as a bonjour printer, but remained visible as a printer in my list (although grayed out).
I did some troubleshooting and the best I could find as a close match for my problem was that perhaps I had entered the name incorrectly in the Queue box...? If anyone knows how to find the appropriate name to insert I would sure appreciate knowing.
Finally - you should probably know that I received this printer from someone else. I guess I'm wondering if I need to be resetting network settings on the printer somehow? The test page lists the following:
    Ethernet (Address: 08:00:07:84:78:e9)
    EtherTalk: PostScript
    NetWare: AutoSelect
    TCP/IP: AutoSelect
    IP address: 0.0.0.0
And - now finally, to answer your questions (the best I can, that is)
I did connect the yellow network cable directly into my laptop (right side, 4th input, counting away from me). I have a portable internet modem that plugs into my wall (for power) and then has a cable (Ethernet?) that goes into my Airport Express (LAN port?). I have no other router and there are no other inputs or outputs on my modem. My Airport Express has only one input for the modem, one mini input for airtunes, and one usb input (in which I have a cable connecting to my other laser printer (now working wirelessly via Airport Express!!)
Should I have these cables hooked up differently?
What is a Phonenet adaptor? My internet is provided via a cable service (not DSL). It is wireless and portable - I can take it to any major city in Canada and it works as long as it is plugged into a power source and near a window.
I really appreciate any help you can offer. At this point I must have spent the better part of almost two weeks trying to get these older laser printers up and running.
    Thank you again.

  • PSE 10 Wont access Paper Profiles for printing

I have my ICC Profile installed.  However I can not access the paper types when trying to print on my epson 1280.  Paper type only shows "Unknown"
Im going crazy.   Can someone help?

Barbara, I installed the Mac OS 10.5.6 Combo update as you suggested. Unfortunately, no change in PSE 6's behavior with its "Photoshop Manages Color" in printing with ICC profiles. It did, however, fix a little delay problem I was having when putting my Mac to sleep. Thanks.
Well, from what I have experienced after days of experimenting, researching the Internet, writing at length on forums such as this one, and going through a lot of expensive OEM photo paper and ink, I can only conclude that the "Photoshop Manages Color" feature does NOT work in PSE 6 for the Mac under the Tiger AND Leopard OS's. The problem apparently is not printer brand specific, nor driver specific.
This important feature, which worked in PSE 4, is broken in PSE 6 for Mac -- and Adobe needs to do something about it SOON, because their customers are not getting the features that they paid for and are wasting a lot of time and resources trying to figure out this problem. Not once in two weeks did anyone on five different forums come forward and say, "this feature works for me" -- instead, just the opposite.
My guess is that many people try this feature and when it doesn't work for them they just go back to using the "Printer Manages Color" setting, or as in my case now, chucks PSE 6 and goes back to using PSE 4.01 until I can find an affordable non-Adobe alternative.
John, thanks for the initial heads-up about how prevalent this problem is.

  • Unable to access secured site for some

    Greetings.
I have setup a secured website on a 10.4 server. The site is the default page in the WebServer\Documents folder.
I can access it fine from work and have had others access it without issue from computers at their homes using typical ISPs. However, when I try to have other access it from other locations using the same login and password, such as a business with its own networks, they are unable to connect. They get back an error message saying the password is in correct.
Everyone can access the site when I have the security settings turned off.
I have set up a realm to handle accessing the site. I have the following also enabled:
    WebDAV
    IP addess is set
    domain is set
    I am using Port 80
Realm authorization is set to "Basic"
    Performance Cache is on
I DO NOT have the following on or active:
    SSL
    SSI
I am sure I am missing something else.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Open the terminal window in the iMac and enter the following command:
    traceroute \[domain name here\]
That will trace the route from your computer to their site and you will be able to see where it stops. There are a number of things that might cause this kind of problem:
    1. The website is down
    2. There's a network problem between your ISP and them
    3. They are blocking your IP address or your ISP for some reason
    4. Content filtering or the firewall in your router is blocking the website
