Unable to access certain HTTPS websites

This is a bit of an odd one.  I'm not a BT customer, but work in network operations for a number of companies.
I'm aware of a large body of BT Broadband customers who can't access various websites over HTTPS.
When they try and access the website the web browser just sits there saying connecting..and eventually just gives up.  No HTTP error codes etc. Just "The Connection Timed Out"
It's only effecting a few HTTPS sites, not all.
DNS is working correctly, the domain name is being resolved to the correct IP address.
They can tracert/ping the server
They can access the websites by typing https://ip.address
I've spoken to BT Support on behalf of one customer but they weren't very intrested.
A couple of the sites people are having problems with:
https://www.rya.org.uk/Pages/login.aspx?ReturnUrl=/Pages/Home.aspx
https://apply.esher.ac.uk
I've also noticed that there have been quite a few old posts on these forums reporting the same issues.
Is anyone else experienceing this problem? or does anyone know of any solutions?
Thanks
Daniel

Typing https://194.81.3.120 gives me a prompt that the certificate is not for that address
Following your link lets me access the site correctly.
I had similar bother to this some time ago and that was down to ActiveX, maybe a browser setting ????
I'm using Firefox.
Sorry can't be much help..

Unable to access certain websites using safari browser.  any ideas!!!!

One of the first things you want to try is if you can get to these same sites on TMG itself. Create an Access rule that allows HTTP and HTTPS from Localhost (TMGs network adapter) to Anywhere (it's under Computer Sets). Apply it and then make sure that IE
is not set to use anything for a proxy. Clear all the boxes. Can you browse these sites? If not then your proxy clients will not be able to. Open a command prompt and use nslookup to see if TMG is resolving the sites. Remember that proxy clients rely on TMG
to do the name resolution for them. If it is not working then you will have a problem.

  • I am unable to access my Bank website since upgrading to Mavericks (Safari 7)

I am unable to access my Bank website since upgrading to Mavericks (Safari 7)
I get the following error message in Safari before I even have the opportunity to
    connect to my bank's website.
It works fine in Firefox and Chrome.
    Access Denied
You don't have permission to access "http://www.tdbank.com/" on this server.
    Reference #18.a555ee3f.1382720248.13b74953

I experienced the same problem where by I could not log into my Nationwide Bank account when I had upgraded Safari to the latest Version before Mavericks 6.1.0 on OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.5. I believe.
I already had Trusteer Rapport installed as recommended by banks.
Some Banks worked but Nationwide skipped the log in page and kept taking me to a page about Cookies telling me I needed to enable them but they were enabled. I just could not get into the Log In Page. Incidentally the Nationwides Cookies screen shot is of an out of date Cookies setting page - it is now under privacy in Safari preferences.
I then installed Rapport again when it popped up as an option and bingo I could get to the Log In page.
Took the plunge and upgraded last evening to Mavericks
Same probelm occured cannot Log In to Nationwide.
I have just stopped Trusteer Rapport and thank goodness I can get into Log On again.
However when I logged out and tried to open another site Safari crashed with the following error message
"safari quite unexpectedly while using trf.dylib plug-in"
Chose Reopen and safari opened Ok
I googled the message and that got me here - seems it is Trusteer Rapport
So someone needs to sort this out I guess Trusteer I guess?
    Hope this is helpful

  • No access to https websites

    Hello everybody,
since a few day I can no longer access to https websites.
    Can anybody helb me?

just use the normal browser, all those useless extra browser are not doing any thing else than the normal browser and most of the time they are unstable as it is the case now, and in the worse case they will even force you to re-install the whole PlayBook as losing everything in the process because they cause corruption in the OS
My advice stay with the normal browser it works for 99.9/100 web site, including the banks which are the one using HTTPS
Using the Playbook and the Z10 and the Z30 and loving them

  • Unable to access certain websites and game servers when using E1500

I've been having a strange intermitent problem with my E1500 wireless router.  When we first bought and installed it everything was working well with no known problems.  After several months no one using the router was able to access certain websites as well as a game server that we play on.  No one had made any changes to the router settings and I assumed at first that it was an ISP problem.  After talking with our ISP tech support they finally suggested plugging my PC directly into the modem rather then the router.  I did and found that the websites and servers that previously wouldn't connect while using the router were now reachable.  As I said not myself or anyone else had made any changes to the router settings since installation.  I decided that just in case someone unauthorized had made changes to simply revert the router to factory settings and reinstall the software.  After doing this I found that I could again reach the websites and servers that I previously could not.  So time went on with no problems until a few months later when the same websites and servers were again unreachable by anyone on our router.  I again reset the router to factory settings and changed passwords as a precaution, but this time the websites and servers were unreachable even though I had just reset the router.  I'm a little confounded as to what could possibly be causing this.  I have had family and friends who live elsewhere use the websites and servers during all of my troubles, so I'm certain that they were not simply down.  I'd greatly appreciate any and all help.
A few of the places that are unreachable to me are as follows:
    http://wiki.project1999.org
    http://www.project1999.org
    http://chaoslife.findchaos.com

Perhaps, you could flash or update the firmware to the latest. Reset and reconfigure the router. You can download firmware here http://support.linksys.com/en-us/support/routers/E1500.

  • Unable to access certain websites

for the past week or so I've been unable to access a number of websites. they're timing out halfway through the connection. other sites hosted by the same companies work fine. looking through the archives i found a similar issue from a year ago in MD. I'm in MA. a group ticket was opened for that MD issue and the problem ultimately was resolved, although i'm not sure what the problem or the solution were.

  • I have this pop out asking for certificate of proof of ID from my Lap Top and without it I am unable to access the airline website for verification of reward redemption??

I have this pop out and asking for my certificate of proof of ID and without it I cannot access an airline website to complete redemption points.
How do I switch this off??

Outside of the contact number for that you've already used I don't know another way of direct contact. Here are some things that they may or may not of had you try that might help you. If you will go to the settings app and pick general on the right-hand side you will see accessibility. Within that you can adjust a text size make the text bowl you can also increase the contrast. You can also adjust the brightness and control panel.
As for Siri again in the settings app under general you should see Siri on the right-hand side with the switch to turn it on. If that is turned on and you're still having issues
    Try a Restart.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
     Resetting your settings
You can also try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your device settings again.... All of the settings in the settings app will have to be re-entered. You won't lose any data, but it takes time to enter all of the settings again.
    Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Apple recommends this only if you are unable to restart it.
Or if this doesn't work and nobody else on the blog doesn't have a better idea you can contact Apple.
Here is a link to their contacts with most of the information below.

  • Unable to access certain sites

Since early yesterday morning I have been unable to access several internet sites, including, for example, LastPass.com.  No hardware, software or settings were changed.  I can access these sites on my iPhone with Verizon wireless and today I was able to access all of them from work (with a non-Verizon Fios ISP).  Again, it is multiple sites that I simply cannot access which is causing problems.  For example, in addition to not being able to use LastPass, my Evernote account will not sync.
    I have tried the following:
    (1) Deleting temporary internet files, cookies, etc. and flushing the dns;
    (2) Rebooting my router mutliple times;
    (3) Turning off my firewall (even though nothing has been changed...); and
    (4) Spending an hour with Fios technical support which, after completely resetting my router, resulted in nothing except the rep offering to sell me premium suppport service...
I have heard of Verizon sometimes fighting with certain other providers or pipeline providers (?), where access can be temporarily limited.  Since this problem is affecting my computer (wired to the router), as well as all the other (wireless) devices in my house, I really need to find a solution as soon as possible.
Any suggestions?  Does anyone understand how provider/pipeline disputes my disrupt access to just certain sites?  Any way to verify that?

Glad to try to help... There are a few suggestions here http://www.makeuseof.com/answers/dns-error-sites-open-fine-pcs/ . I would try changing your DNS server on the router ... This procedure http://www.verizon.com/support/residential/internet/fiosinternet/troubleshooting/network/questionson...  will get you to the correct screen BUT use 8.8.8.8 for Primary DNS server, and 8.8.4.4  as secondary

  • 10.6.2 - Unable to access Wildcard SSL websites as Regular User, Admin OK

    Hello,
I ran into a weird problem with Snow Leopard 10.6.2 after some of the recent updates on Snow Leopard 10.6.2:
*If using a standard user account (one that cannot administer the machine), I am unable to access any SSL enabled website that uses a wildcard certificate*
If I switch to the main account (or any account that can administer the computer) then all is OK and the wildcard SSL website comes right up!
Here is a website to test on: https://vsi.powerschool.com (it uses a *.powerschool.com wildcard certificate)
This behavior started just recently, as apple must have done some changes, but I cannot seem to find a fix, can anyone PLEASE help?
    Thanks in advance!
    Stefan.

I did get a "stock" response from Apple support, and I am pasting it below.
While it may help some of you, for me it is NOT a solution. It is as if Apple does not even want to acknowledge this major bug.
I temporarily got around the problem by identifying that the parental controls are actually blocking DNS resolution, and not access to the sites themselves!
Therefore, I added the wildcard SSL website to the /etc/hosts file with it's corresponding IP address as to bypass DNS lookups for it. As long as the IP address does not change all will be OK, so I still do not consider this a fix.
    =========== Apple Response ==========
+Secure (HTTPS) websites need to be added to the list of allowed sites (white list). For each site that needs to be added, use the "host" command in Terminal with the domain name to obtain its IP address, then use the host command with the IP address to obtain the reverse domain name. For example:+
    +$ host gmail.com+
    +gmail.com has address 74.125.127.83+
    +gmail.com has address 209.85.225.83+
    +gmail.com has address 74.125.79.83+
    +gmail.com mail is handled by 30 alt3.gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com.+
    +gmail.com mail is handled by 5 gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com.+
    +gmail.com mail is handled by 10 alt1.gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com.+
    +gmail.com mail is handled by 20 alt2.gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com.+
    +gmail.com mail is handled by 40 alt4.gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com.+
    +$ host 74.125.127.83+
    +83.127.125.74.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer pz-in-f83.1e100.net.+
+In this case, the result is "1e100.net" (ignoring subdomains), which is different than the domain we started with. Therefore, add both "gmail.com" and "1e100.net" to the white list.+
+Repeat these steps for each secure site that needs to be accessed in Parental Controls.+

  • After updating to 10.4.11 unable to access certain site.

Since I updated to 10.4.11 I am unable to access the site: www.wdwinfo.com. My wife would listen to a podcast hosted by the site. iTunes just keeps spinning away that it's looking. I tried all four browsers on my machine to see if I could reach the site (Safari, Camino, Firefox and Flock). I cleaned all caches and histories. I am able to get to the site on my ipod touch on my neighbours open wifi. I can even ping the site on my machine and get a response but as far as my browsers and iTunes are concerned they just sit there waiting to connect. I called my ISP and they can get the site no problem. I tried another computer in the building that is with the same provider and they have no problem. All other websites and podcasts work fine.
I'm running 10.4.11 on an 1.83GHz Intel iMac.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Mark

The 216.167.116.52 address worked for about an hour while I downloaded the podcasts and then stopped working. I entered the DNS Server number you mentioned in the network settings but I'm still back to no access.
The setup I am working with is ExpressVu TV/Internet for condos. The phone company (Bell) setup a main frame in the building and provide my TV and internet over the same cable. The motorola box set top box had a modem installed into it when they were setting it up. Ethernet from it to my Mac. In my network setting it shows that there is a router in the path. Would the router trump me putting in the DNS numbers? I'm guessing the router is sitting at the mainframe in the building.

  • Unable to access the soundcloud website

    Hey everyone,
i am a newbie to the Apple community.  I am having trouble accessing the Soundcloud website (www.soundcloud.com).  every other page on the internet seems to be working (well the ones i have tried anyway) except this one.  I am not sure if it is a plug in issue.  I have a Macbook Pro and am using Snow Leporad.  Might it have something to do with the fact that I have not updated to Lion ???
Just wondering if anyone has had the same issue and might be able to give a bit of assistance?
    Kindest regards,

  • Unable to access certain files in Finder without extra steps.

I am new to Mac and I have a very basic issue. I cannot access certain files in my library just by opening Finder and going to the location. To expose the files, I must go to my desktop, and click "Go" on the Finder bar at the top left. After the list has dropped down, I must press and hold the "Option" key to expose the "Library" option. If I then click the location, my complete library opens with the files I cannot find while executing in the other fashion. This makes things a pain when doing tasks such as posting content to the internet as all the files are not present. I must then take the long way to the file, drag it to a place as my desktop, and open it from there to upload to the internet. Sorry for the essay, wondering if there is anyway to get all the files in my library and its contents shown in Finder without taking "the long way."

  • Unable to access certain web servers after creating time capsule network

Since creating a home network with Time Capsule, there are certain web sites or servers that I am unable to connect to. The browser attempts to connect, but always gets timed out.
One site, for example is a link from my fantasy football homepage: football30.myfantasyleague.com
I have no trouble with any other site, and am able to get to the address above if I connect my Mac directly with the Cable Modem, thus bypassing the time capsule network. Also, if I use my old wireless router, I am able to access the address without problem. I am also able to ping the address on my time capsule network,
I've tried accessing this site on multiple computers (both mac and pc) through my home network and using multiple browsers (Firefox, Safari, and IE). So the problem must lie with some time capsule setting (some kind of default firewall). However, I cannot find any setting on Time Capsule or Airport utilities where I could make any adjustments or view any prohibited site access.
Does anybody know why this particular site is constantly blocked when I use the Time Capsule as my router?

    hamish,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussion!
I'm wondering if either or both Airport Utility & Network Prefs have proper DNS server settings. Try this
    Launch Airport Utility.
    Select TC on left.
    Click "Manual Setup".
Select "Internet" from the toolbar above.
    What's listed for "DNS Server(s):"?
Try putting in these servers from OpenDNS [http://www.opendns.com>
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Click "Update".
Your TC will restart with the new settings.
Next, launch System Prefs --> Network Prefs.
Select the service you usually connect with on the left (Airport or Ethernet).
    Then click, "Advance..."
    Click the "DNS" tab.
    What's listed for "DNS Server(s):"?
Usually "10.0.1.1" will be listed first in gray. This refers back to the settings in the Airport Utility.
Nevertheless, it doesn't hurt to add the DNS servers noted above here as well.
    Click "OK" then click "Apply".
Now see if you can access those websites again.
    Cheers!

  • Unable to access Internal HTTPS through VPN conn

Anytime I have internal websites with HTTPS connections that do not have valid certificates, our VPN users are unable to make a connection. The wireshark trace shows acknowlegement number = broken TCP.  I have run Packet Tracer and it shows a problem on my DMZ???? not sure why as the traffic flow is inside to inside interface. I am at a total lost as to why...

    ASA 5520 with 8.4(1) code
    VPN Addressing = 172.25.17.0/24
    HTTP Server = 172.18.2.13 (port 8443)
Can ping by IP Address or by server name
Can access site internally after responding to the Certificate Warning

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Hi,
The NAT configuration mentioned in your screencapture is the configuration that causes all traffic from the VPN users to be diverted to the "HomeOffice" interface because "any any" is configured
You would either have to make the above rule more specific by removing the "any any" and adding the actual networks
    OR
You could add a new rule BEFORE the above mentioned NAT configurations
I am not sure what the real local interface "nameif" is (the one where the server IP is actually located) but you would need this kind of configurations
    object network SERVER
    host 172.18.2.13
    object network VPN-POOL
    subnet 172.25.17.0 255.255.255.0
nat (serverint,outside2) 1 source static SERVER SERVER destination static VPN-POOL VPN-POOL
The above rule should match the traffic from the VPN-POOL to the SERVER. The number "1" seen in the CLI format configurations means that it would be added to the top of the rules. The "serverint" is meant to mean the actual name of the interface where the server is located as I presume that its not located behind the "HomeOffice"
