Unable to access disk repair option on OSX Install CD

I tried to do a disk repair from the Install CD - I opened Disk Utility from the Installer menu, clicked on the Mac Harddrive in the left hand column and clicked on First Aid.
While the Repair Permissions was accessible, the Disk Repair option was greyed out.
I did not see any option to choose language during this process.
Can someone please help?
Thanks

That IS the version for some iBook G4s anyway, not certain which one you have though. Did this come from Apple with those Disks?
I don't understand why the Language never showed, or why it "thinks" the Hard Drive is in use, which is what causes that grayed out thing.
Does it Verify from the DVD?
Do you have an Open Firmware Password set perchance?
Tough without the Install disc, but some things to try...
Does it boot to Single User Mode, CMD+s keys at bootup, if so try...
/sbin/fsck -fy
Repeat until it shows no errors fixed.
(Space between fsck AND -fy important).
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck...

Tough without the Tiger Disk problems, but try fsck...
To use fsck, you must run it from the command line. Unlike using your mouse to open an application to do something, you'll need to type a text command at the prompt (#) to tell fsck what to do. The Terminal application (/Applications/Utilities) and single-user mode are two examples of command-line interfaces in which you can type such commands. To use fsck:
1. Start up your computer in single-user mode to reach the command line. Hold CMD+s keys down at bootup.
Note: If necessary, perform a forced restart as described in the Emergency Troubleshooting Handbook that came with your computer. On desktop computers, you can do this by pressing the reset/interrupt button (if there is one) or holding down the power button for several seconds. On portable computers, simultaneously press the Command-Control-power keys. If your portable computer doesn't restart with this method, you may need to reset the Power Manager.
2. At the command-line prompt, type /sbin/fsck -fy
(SPACE between fsck AND -fy important)
3. Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found:

The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK
If fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
*** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***

Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 2 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).
4. When fsck reports that your volume is OK, type reboot at the prompt and then press Return.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.

Thanks for your reply! I must apologise for the quality of my post. I inadvertently posted it before it was corrected.
I am very disappointed with this iMac. It is only 18 months old and this will be the third visit to the workshop. I had expected more from Apple and from their repair agents. Luckily I have AppleCare.

  • Attempting Disk repair with Snow Leopard install DVD. Prompted to restart several times

    Hi,
I'm trying to do a disk repair with my MBP (2010, OS X snow leopard). I tried  to enter Disk Utility with my Snow Leopard install DVD by pressing down "c" during startup but it gives me a grey screen in several languages prompting me to restart again. Restarted and I get the same screen.  Can anyone help me?

You are getting a (kernel) panic crash booting from the installer dvd?  Hmmm.  That's doesn't sound good.  Try resetting smc and pram.
If that doesn't fix it try to boot the Apple Hardware Test and check your machine -- assuming that will boot?
Also look inside if you get that panic crash and see if there are any diagnostic leds lit.
If this continues you might try disconnecting all unnecessary peripherals (usb, fw, extra drives).

  • Trying to access disk repair but.....

While trying to figure out a way to fix iTunes problems and slooooow USB download problems, I ran Disk Utility and found that there is a problem on the hard drive of my MacPro-10.4.11. It said to insert the OSX CD and reboot by holding the "C" key until the apple logo appeared then choose Disk Utility. I did that but I don't get a screen to let me choose that option. What I do get is a screen to choose my language. If I choose and go on, I get options to reinstall the OS which I don't want to do until I see if the disk can be repaired. I must be doing something wrong....or the USB ports won't work so the keyboard doesn't work when I hold the C key down. And I can't exit the setup disk or get the CD out of the drawer because the eject key on the keyboard doesn't eject it. Is there a way to open the CD/DVD drawer manually? Is my only option to reinstall the OS anyway? I did back up all my data a few days ago knowing that this issue was coming up but I still don't want to go thru all that reinstall stuff if the disk is bad.
Thanks for any suggestions you can give me.
    Paula

  • Disk Repair Options?

    My machine will not boot.
I get a grey screen,an apple, and then silent black stillness.
I can boot from my install disk and run Disk Utility.
I select the Macintosh HD, and get a First Aid failed message with the following info:
    Invalid Key Length
    Volume Check Failed
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error.
Before I throw in the towel, I want to try other tools.
Disk Warrior and Tech Tools sites report that their bootable CDs will not support Macbook Pro 2.2 and 2.4 GHz.
    Do you have any suggestions???
    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You can still run Disk Warrior from a bootable external hard drive. To create a bootable external hard drive, first format it with GUID partitioning using Disk Utility from the Utilities menu of the installer disk which came with your MacBook Pro that appears after you select the installer. You will find a Partition tab with options how to partition. Choose the GUID partition method after selecting the external hard drive, and before erasing the external hard drive, and partition it for two partitions (one for at least 10 GB, one for at least the size of the internal hard drive). Once that is done, restart the computer from the installer disk again, and install the operating system on the external hard drive's 10 GB partition customizing the install to only install the basic operating system and nothing else. I would put both a copy of Prosoft Data Rescue and Disk Warrior on the 10 GB partition. Once that is done, attempt recovering your internal drive to the larger partition with Prosoft Data Rescue. If you are able to get usable data or already have a backup, then go ahead and try to run Disk Warrior on the internal drive.
If Disk Warrior can't fix it, you may be due for a new drive.

  • Downloaded Lion - No Disk Repair Option and No Lion OS Disk

I just purchased Mac OS Lion in the App Store and downloaded it and my computer has been having problems since the download. I ran the disk utility and it is saying I need to repair but the option is greyed out and to use the start up disk. Can I use the start up disk now that I have a new operating system? How can I repair with out the Lion Disk?

You did install Lion as an upgrade from Snow leopard?
If you still have your SL install disk, boot from it (insert CD, and hold down C key while restarting). Go to Disk Utility and repair disk. Note: you should make sure to have a full backup first.
Or, you should have the new recovery partition installed automatically. Restart while holding the Command and R keys and then follow on screen instructions. (Not entirely sure though if that works on systems that were upgraded to Lion or only if it was pre-installed - but booting with Command + R won't do any harm; you can always dismiss and boot back into your regular system).

  • Satellite C55-A-1N2 - Windows is broken and no access to repair option

    Hello,
A friend of mine got a Satellite C55-A-1N2 brand new from november 2013 with windows 8.1.
    The serial number is: yd344983s
At the beginning, there was a wifi issue.
    I found lot of adware...
I uninstall most of them by hand, and clean everything with adwcleaner.
The portable works fine, i switch off the DNS client service and add anti-pupsadware in hosts file to prevent any new adwares installation.
All was ok and give it back to friend.
But at the next start up, windows was slow, unable to connect wifi, enter config panel, do anything actually.
I tried according to manual, to press F8 and power on, but that just switch on to windows login.
I tried also F12, and tried to use windows seven CD with no success.
Do you have any ideas of what i can do ?
    That looks pretty bad.
    Thanks.

I dont know how to access that blue menu
    > As mentioned by Keany, you have to completely power OFF the system. The point is that Win 8 as well as Win > 8.1 do not power off the notebooks but set it to hybrid shut down mode in order to speed up the system boot > process.
As i said in the first post, it was no possible to do lot of things apart login, so set the option for full power off was not possible.
I manage to access to bios using F2, but was not useful (just play with CMS vs UEFI, normal boot speed ...)
Nothing to lose, i tried the "0" that lead me to HDD Recovery for a full reset.
Manual said that it will erase eveything, but actually user & documents are still here.
Now that it works fine, i set the option for full power off for more tests and acknowledgment :
    - The F12 works, HDD recovery or bootable devices choice. Ok
    - The 0 still lead to HDD recovery. Ok
    - The F8 still does nothing ... ??!! Strange !
So manual are not very accurate on this model, *but my job is done and i did recovery dvds for next time.*
    Thanks.

  • Data recovery/Disk repair options

    Hi guys,
My hard drive appears to have kicked the can this weekend. All I can get at startup is the blank gray screen. When I boot from the OS X Install Disc and attempt to repair permissions, I either get "The underlying task reported failure (-9972)" error, or a "Keys out of order" error. Both of which seem pretty serious from what I've been reading.
Sadly (or ironicly) my system had been slowing down quite a bit over the last couple weeks, and Friday I bought a Lacie external drive to back up on, but didn't have any time to work on it over the weekend!! ugh.
Anyway, being able to only go as far as I can, do I have any options to save any of the data? I've read a lot of recommendations on here for Data Rescue II, but I can't tell from their website if this is something I'd be able to boot from? If that would work, would I be able to use my Lacie drive straight out of the box without any setup??

    Update:
So I stopped at a retail store on my way home from work and talked to a Genius who also recommended DiskWarrior. So as i'm buying it he says "Oh, but first you should check and see if you still have time left on your AppleCare."
Now I'm home, with a yet unopened DiskWarrior, realizing that I still do have time left on my AppleCare, wondering if I'm stupid for still wanting to do this myself right now instead of bringing it in......

  • Disk Repair Boot from OSX Disc...

Have a bad issue: my iMac has been found (using disk verify) to be corrupt. It tells me to boot from the installation disc to repair. Only problem is my DVD SuperDrive is dead! How can I boot from a disc if the drive won't mount? I've used three other external drives and none are recognized.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!!

Even if you can't repair the drive from the MacBook Pro in TDM, you should be able to move your user files to either the MacBook Pro or an External HD until you can repair or replace the iMac.

  • Can't load Yosemite and can't access Disk Repair

I attempted to load Yosemite. I got the error message indicating verification failed, etc. I understand Apple wrote in code to prohibit successful loading of Yosemite if there were problems with the harddrive, and upon using disk utility, I get the "This disk needs to be repaired. Click Repair Disk" message. But the Repair Disk button won't highlight and thus won't allow me to repair the disc.
I have also tried to boot up using the OS x base system install disc that came with the macbook pro, but installation fails there as well. I am caught in an endless loop.
I backed up the machine recently and am not too concerned about the things I would lose if that is the way it has to be, but would like to retain the info if possible.
Can anyone offer any advice? Thanks in advance

    Hi czarnicj,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I know this type of situation can be very frustrating. To repair the disk you will need to start your computer using OS X Recovery. Please use the attached article for information and steps to start in recovery and repair your disk.

  • Unable to access "My payment options" or "Blackberry ID" from my account in Blackberry app world

    Greetings,
I am able to log into my blackberry app world account using my email address and password.  Once logged in, if I click "My payment options" or "Blackberry ID" I am prompted for my username and password again.  Entering my email address and password will not work at this point - there is no error message, it just clears the username and password fields and prompts for the username and password again in a perpetual loop.  I have tried using different browsers and different computers.
    Thank you.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It was not working from the device - so I tried from the PC and encountered the problem.  After a power-cycle of my Blackberry it started to work.
    Thank you, problem resolved.
    Thx

  • Why am I unable to access iphone backup on iBook OSX 10.4?

My old 3GS phone has a backup on my mac. My new phone can't access the backup because the phone is demanding 10.5.... This is the Intel build, correct? Luckily my backup on my PC was available (thanks Mr Gates). Is there a way around this blot on Apple's escutcheon?

Leopard - 10.5 can be installed on a Mac with an Intel or Power PC processor that meets the minimum system requirements. The iPhone 4 requires a Mac running 10.5.8 or later.

  • Repair Disk & Repair Permissions Using Leopard Install Disk NOT WORKING!!

I start up from my Leopard disk and click the Mac OS Partition in disk utility and two things go wrong...
Firstly, when I click either verify or repair permissions the progress bar stays as the moving angled lines forever (haven't tried leaving it for more than five minutes though).
Secondly, when I verify my disk it says everything appears to be okay, but when I try and repair the disk it says "The disk Macintosh HD cannot be unmounted" so I am unable to repair my disk. Are these fixable issues or is it a Leopard thing?

UPDATE: I let Repair Permissions run for a good twenty minutes and it worked, just took a long time, this in turn fixed my Repair Disk problem, so I'm all set.
