UNABLE TO ACCESS MY PHOTOS FROM OTHER PROGRAMS

Hi new Mac user here. can anyone shed some light on a small problem I am having.
I am trying to upload my images to a photo library, but when i click on the select file button it opens up another window allowing me to navigate to where my images are stored in iphoto. I navigate to pictures etc, but when I get to iphoto it is greyed out and won't let me locate the image I want to upload.
Any ideas why I cannot select my photos which are in seperate folders within iphoto library?

There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Accessing I-Photo from other programs

Can not access I-Photo from WORD, I-Movie, etc. since installing I-Photo 09. It will show that I-Photo is available but never produces any photos, just continues to say "Loading" Have to drag photos to screen or other location, then drag to desired location. Have considered re-installing.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Run Software Update and make sure you have all the iLife support updates installed. If you have then download and re-install the iLife 9.0.3 update from here

  • How do I access iPhoto files from other programs (i.e. PhotoShop Elements)

From within many programs, specifically PhotoShop Elements or Adobe Bridge tonight, I navigate to "iPhoto Library" and can not access the files within the library to use in these programs. I can get there from within Finder, just not other programs. This is extremely frustrating...can someone please help?

Of course - it is a database and you must use the correct access methods
and for a photo editor like PSE you also need to explain what you are trying to do
IF -- you want to edit photos within the iPhoto library then simply set PSE as the external editor in the iPhoto preferences - then you edit and save (not save as) and the database is automatically updated -- if you want to choose iPhoto or PSE as the editor then after setting PSE as the external editor set the external editor back to in main window and now normal editing will be in iPhoto but by right clicking on a photo in iPhoto you get a menu allowing you to use PSE for it
IF - you are generally asking and want the general answer - all open (or attach) dialogue windows have the media browser in the lower left - look under media ==>pictures ==> iPhoto but if you use this method you can not just return photos to iPhoto - you must save as and then import into iPhoto

  • Can't Access Aperture Photos from Other Applications

I am using the trial version of Aperture. I can't access the photos in Aperture from Photoshop, Word or any other application (except Mail). I can see the icon for Aperture and the words "Aperture 3 Trial Library" but it is grayed out. Is there a setting or what? I have Snow Leopard and Mac OS X 10.6.5.

I guess one thing that bothers me about all my pictures being "bundled" in iPhoto or Aperture is that they don't show up in the Finder.
This is a real non-issue. A Package is simply a folder that looks like a file. Want to look inside? Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library or the Aperture Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
See? There are all your files, in folders.
Why are they Packaged? Because if you move, rename, or alter them then you will corrupt your Library. So it's a simple protection for the structure of the Library. That's all. No big secret.
But there are other things you need to consider too.
Supposing you want to attach a file to an Email in Aperture. Presumably you want to send the edited file of your photo. So, how do you do that +when there is no edited file+? Aperture doesn't actually edit the file at all it simply records the decisions you have taken and shows them to live when you view the pic. All your edits are "virtual". So, the fact that your original files are stored out the the package will be no help to you at all.
iPhoto is pretty much the same - though the details are different.
So, you have to use the applications when you want to access the files for whatever reason - editing, printing, sharing, whatever. That's the point of these apps. They are your Photo Manager, what AddressBook is to your Contacts, iTunes is to your Music and so on.
Here's a macro I use for when these questions come up on the iPhoto Forum. Most - if not all - of these will also work for Aperture:
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*_(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)_*
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto or Aperture
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto or Aperture not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
*File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. This produces, producing a copy.

  • Unable to switch to finder from other programs

    Hi,
The finder does not seem to be working properly and there are several aspects to the problem:
    1) Frequently when in a finder window or on the desktop I will click on a file name while in list view to change it and the name will disappear. If I change to icon view, I can then either stay in icon view or return to list view and then in either case I can change the name. The icon itself is not effected nor have I have not lost any files in the process. I tried deleting the user library preference list for the finder with no effect.
    2) Frequently when using either specifically Safari and/or Preview (current versions) I will be working within those programs, and then attempt to either go to the desktop or a finder window and face the same problem. I am unable to open a finder window or effect a file on the desktop, until I go to the dock or an already open finder window and click on the finder icon in the dock or the finder window sidebar. This also occurs while using a graphics program called EzDraw. These are the three most common programs that have been effected, but these also represent the bulk of times when I am using the computer/ So I do not know if this is a global problem for sure, but I suspect it is.

    Hi,
    Thanks for the quick reply.
    iRestore ... Operating System Requirements:
This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:
    Mac OS X 10.4 Intel
    Mac OS X 10.4 PPC
    Additional Requirements:
    Mac OS X 10.4.4 - 10.4.11, or Mac OS X 10.6.x. Does not work under Mac OS X 10.
BlueHarvest 3.0 requires a Mac with an Intel processor running MacOS X v10.5 or later. BlueHarvest 2 can be downloaded for PowerPC based Macs and Macs running v10.4 below.
    Unfortunately I have a G5 2.1 GHz PowerPC (non-intel) using MAC OS 10.5.8
    Any other possibilities?

  • Accessing my iphotos w/ other programs?

Hi there, I'm a very new Mac user. I transitioned over from the PC just about a month ago. For the most part, the transition has been fairly easy, and "welcome" but there are a couple of areas where it's hard in the coming... and my pictures & and video are definitely 2 of those areas.
My question right now is, *if I use other programs* (or even iPhoto) *to edit my pictures, do I lose the original?* Where does the original "go"? Or, better yet, where does it "stay"?
As a 20+ year veteran of the PC I have to admit I've learned the hard way when it comes to leaving all my valuables in one location. My pictures and family video are definitely considered my most prized possessions. One of my biggest personal struggles with my transition to the Mac is knowing that iPhoto is basically controlling my pictures - all... in ONE... location. It makes me very uneasy. My lack of ease is most closely associated with feeling like I may lose the original photos when I make changes to them.
I am really unclear as to how this works - how the original photo is preserved, most particularly because I can't get into the folders and root around in the files myself like I could with my PC. iPhoto has it's great points, but I've seriously considered having a windows OS installed on my Mac purely for the use of my PC's ACDSee photo viewer. And... from what I've read on the internet during my search for this answer (It's been on my mind since the first day I booted up my beautiful brand new iMac) there are many an-ex-PC user mourning this same loss, lol.
*Help? When I edit in ANY program... do I lose my original??*

First - the good news is that with iPhoto managing your photos it is very easy to back them up - and you must do that - both to an external drive and once in a while to dvd
    As to editing
first let me describe how iPhoto handles your photos irrespective of who edits them
when you import a photo, iPhoto places the original in an originals folder within the iPhoto library (DO NOT GO IN AND MODIFY ANYTHING WITHIN THE iPhoto library EVER - you can LOOK but do NOT TOUCH) and makes a thumbnail that it places in the data folder. Any time you edit a photo using iPhoto OR using an external editor properly linked to iPhoto (more on this in a minute) there is a modified version created and it is kept in the modified folder.
At any time you can select a photo and revert to original eliminating all changes and being back to a virgin photo just the way it was imported. Also as you make multiple edits iPhoto always applies your edits to the original so multiple edits do not degrade your photo quality - you are never more than one step from the original (pretty cool!)
To proper use an external editor simply go to the iPhoto menu ==> preferences ==> general and under the edit in selection select "in external editor" and now when you edit your photo will be passed to the external editor of our choice and when you save it (NOT SAVE AS) it will come back into iPhoto as a modified and iPhoto will update the thumbnail and save the original (as described above)
If you want to use both the iPhoto editor (a pretty good editor for most purposes) and sometimes an external editor - after you select your external editor change the edit in window back to "in main window" and now if you double click or click edit you will use the iPhoto editor and if you right click (control click on a single button mouse) you will get a contextual menu allowing you to select the external editor (and as usual, you save - not save as - when you are done
there also often is a question on how to access your photos form other programs - see Terence Devlin's discussion in this thread for a complete discussion of that - http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1371662&tstart=15 - or look here
Help? When I edit in ANY program... do I lose my original??
So in a word - NO! - if you use the iPhoto external editor feature
If you were to go into the iPhoto library directly you would and might lose albums etc - you just can not directly change the contents of the iPhoto library except using iPhoto ( or an iPhoto aware program like iPhoto library Manager)

  • Accessing Photos Through Other Programs

Hopefully this is not a stupid question and that it actually makes sense. I recently updated my iphoto library. Yesterday a photo was sent to me through messenger on my iphone. I saved that photo to my phone and then imported it into my computer. Since it's a picture of my relatives and not of me, I don't feel comfortable uploading it to social media and wanted to just share it directly with a friend through skype. However, I find that when I try to locate a file within my mac so that I can upload it to sites and programs of my choosing, I can no longer access my photo library. Oh, I can find the photo library, but it's not accessible from other programs. I don't want to import the photo through iphoto into mail, messages, airdrop, twitter, facebook, linkedin, vimeo, flickr, 'add to photos', or add to aperture or any of the other options. It's my photo so I should be able to do whatever I want with it.
So, my question is: how in the world do I access the file itself, and send it to somewhere not on the sharing list? And specifically, can I access that file and do anything with it from outside iphoto at all?

The drag and drop portion of that does work.
Although I will admit that the accessing them through the 'media' and 'photos' thing when you try to open a file through other programs 100% is no longer an option. The only thing you'll find in there is photo booth. Also the 'Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.' is no longer an option. I don't know about the other options because I didn't try. But so far in order to just be able to access the file however I want to, dragging and dropping it to the desktop is the only thing I've found that works.

  • HT5958 This new closed Library system stinks. Now you can't access media from other programs. Any work around?

Let me start by saying I have been using FCP X for a year now and really love it.  We produce a half hour weekly TV series so I put it through its paces on a weekly bases.
I was horrified to return from the holidays to find out that an automatic update yielded a whole new file system.  By packaging all of the Final Cut Event and Project folders into a single library file you can no longer access the original media from other programs such as Photoshop and After Effects without making two copies of all of the media.  This really cuts into the pipeline.  In the past we were able to recreate new show opens and transitions quickly from within After Effects by linking to the original media in the event folders to use them as source files in compositions.  The same was true of grabbing frames from Original movies for use in Photoshop for promotional materials.  With the use of the Libraries, ALL OF THE LINKS ARE BROKEN.  Yes I know you can right click on a library and still view the files, yes they are still there, but you can't do that from within another program.
This Library system doesn't make any sense.  Its a step back from the old system.  It was much easier, quicker, and efficient to move large event libraries and projects off and on the system and backup using Finder.  Now you have to open up Final Cut to do everything and its a lot slower.
I want to appeal to any Apple developers who monitor this to return to the old system of file management.

Media does not have to be stored inside the library. Use the Consolidate library or event to move it to an external location.

  • I am unable to print color photos from i photo using a Brother Printer

I am unable to print color photos from i photo using a Brother MFC-6490CW all in one.  The photos appear to be in grayscale.  I have checked the printer settings, but for some reason I am not able to access the color management on my printer from printer set up.  It only gives me the standard option.  I have spent hours checking Bother's website and Apple's and I am not able to come up with a valid answer.  I know that the color print works.  If I print something from the internet of from outlook it will print in color.  I know all of my cartridges are in working order, I have cleaned the print head on my Brother, but I am still not able to print photos in color!!!
What puzzles me the most is why I am unable to really access the color management menu on my printer?  It just does not come up.  I have the option from paper handling to print photos, but this has nothing to do with the quality.  I have also tried printing the photo from an Adobe PDF file and I still have the same problem.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?  Thank you.

In the Print dialogue box click on the little triangle to the right of the name of the printer. That will expand the dialogue box.

  • Line Breaks missing in captions from other programs...

I've spent the last few hours searching around, and I've been unable to find any solution to a weird thing I noticed.
I've recently purchased LR 3.4.1 and when I imported a handful of older pics that had had the captions set using Bridge, the line breaks were now gone.
I then went to Bridge and tested it, and sure enough, it can read line breaks from LR, but the opposite doesn't seem to be true. As part of my work, I get a bunch of photos that other photogs have shot and added captions to via Bridge, but I can't seem to find any check box or setting on how to get LR to read the line breaks.
Any one have any advice on how to get LR to read line breaks from other programs? I'd hate to have to go through and re-caption each and every single photo, especially when adding the older ones into LR to use it as a DAM.
    Thanks!

This is a long-standing, annoying bug in Windows LR that has been acknowledged by Adobe:
    http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/newline_bug_in_caption_text
Please go to the feedback site and vote for that issue to get fixed.
It is just a display problem in LR -- the line breaks in the metadata are preserved, and if you enter line breaks in the metadata, they are preserved too.

  • I installed OSXYosemite 10.10.3 and have been unable to access my photos in iPhoto

I installed OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 and have been unable to access my photos on iPhoto - in fact, I have  been unable to even get iPhoto to open.  I read that I should download iPhoto 9.6.1 but have been unable to even find it.  There was a suggestion about going to users and groups and creating a new user, then trying to go to applications, purchases, and clicking on "update" - that did not work.  Help.

On OS X Yosemite 10.10.3, Photos for OS X has replaced iPhoto in terms of your main Photo application.
While iPhoto is still technically on your computer, it is not available as a separate download from the Mac App Store anymore, unless it is under your Purchased Tab in the Mac App Store
You can import your iPhoto Library to Photos and all events (iPhoto Events), albums, etc. etc. will be the same.

  • Firefox 3.6 doesn't open links clicked from other programs (IM, etc.,)

Whenever I try to open a link from either my IM or an IRC program like mIRC it won't open in firefox. I have to copy and paste the link.

I now have FireFox 32.0.2 no joy. I have loaded ThunderBrowse which took care of Thunderbird but still can't load links from other programs. I fixed this before (other backups, I crashed my windows C drive and have been trying to restore), but can't remember how. I think it required reloading IE (I had deleted IE on my latest restore), but I have now done that with no joy.
When I click on a link from another program, nothing happens, and when I right click and am offered "open in browser" nothing happens, and when offered " copy browser link" it doesn't copy.
I tried resetting FireFox, no joy.
Noticed control panel "set program access" doesn't hold, always goes back to custom, and defaults to "uses default browser"!
    Please help!

This has been asked a number of times before, but none of the answers worked for me. I have Firefox 26.0 (the most stable for me) and Thunderbird 24.6.0. But then I remembered trying to open help in MS word and Frontpage which are supposed to open from the internet.
