Unable to access Partition Drive

I was recently using a G6 Tower with a hard drive partion for use with Virtual PC loaded. The logic board/mother board crapped out and rather then pay the funds to repair I installed the hard drive in a stand alone box to use with a new iMac. I have been able to access the drive in the box but am encountering lots of issues when trying to access the partion portion. I'm unable to access Virtual PC for some reason and keep receiving the message "Virtual PC quit unexpectedly" and am asked to reopen the application which just goes into a loop. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the hint though I am aware of this. I'm attempting to access the partition to obtain some data off of it to in turn utilize within VM Fusion.

  • E1550 - unable to access USB drive with Ubuntu

I am probably overlooking something real obvious but after screwing around for two hours I figure I need some help.
I am running Ubuntu 14.04. I have set up the E1550 router with an external drive that I formatted with the router utility. At this point I do NOT have an internet connection hooked to the router - I am not sure I want to for now. What I would like to do is to be able to access, wirelessly, a drive that multiple users can use to back up their important files onto.
I have tried using anonymous disk read/write access as well as creating shares. All the features seem to be setting up ok but at this point I have no clue how to access the drive.
I have tried using the Ubuntu files utility and then selecting 'browse network' followed by selecting 'windows network'. Alas, 'windows network' is an empty file with no drive present.
I have tried accessing the router wirelessly and also hard wired - no joy.
Am I maybe not acessing the drive properly through Ubuntu? Do I need to mount the remote drive rather than accessing it through the windows network ?
Thanks in advance for any pointers given !
    Solved!

I am not expert with Ubuntu OS but have you tried to map the drive on your computer? I have no idea how to do that using Ubuntu but if you're using Windows or Mac, you can simply follow the steps from Linksys KB. It usually helps me when I am trying to enable file-sharing capabilities within my network.

  • 4.0EA3 : Unable to access mapped drives (Windows) in file browser dialogs

All File Browser dialogs only allow access to by local C: (hard disk) and D: (DVD) drives. It is not possible any more to access mapped drives (which are referencing UNC paths to our file server) - i.e. Network drives.
I have tried the following accesses to the File Browser:
File -> Open    : Does not work
File -> Data Modeler -> Open : does not work
Tools -> Preferences -> Environment -> Log -> Log Directory -> Browse : does not work
This worked/works fine in SqlDev 3.2.2
I tried to rule out connection/authentication problems to our SAN (the network drives are fully accessible from Windows Explorer and even JDeveloper 11.1.2.2.0) - I created a drive mapping to a share on my local hard disk. Can't see this mapping from within SqlDev either
    Problem occurs on Win7 64-bit
Looking forward to Oracle feedback or to see if other users find the same issue

    Hi Jeff
    Many thanks for your reply.
No - the location drop-down only shows my C: (Hard Drive) and D: (DVD Drive).
With further playing, I did find that if I qualify a script on a network file share with the full UNC path, it successfully opens the script.
The problem is that I cannot navigate to locations on mapped drives.
Having successfully opened a sample script, there is now a shortcut to the folder/directory of my shared scripts in the left pane of the open (file browser) dialog box. Its a good workaround.
I have shared a screenshot on my Google Drive (this forum does not allow insert of images or attachments ?)

  • Unable to access external drive connected to Mac Pro running Mountain Lion

When I initially connect, it is accessable and I am able to back up to it.  But after a few weeks, it no longer allows changes.  It is still mounted, and I can see the directories on it, but can no longer write to it.  I was told by the folks at G-drive that this is a known problem with Mountain Lion.  I really need my drive to stay available....I notice that there is an update to 10.8.4, but before taking my FM Pro Server offline, I'd like to know if the update will fix the problem.
    Thanks.

I don't know if it's the same problem, but in the last few weeks we have had that happen on two machines running Snow Leopard and one running Lion 10.7.5.  In our case, it always involves Time Machine, and the FW external FW drive becomes read-only for no apparent reason and despite the fact that Command+I reveals the user "can read and write" to the drive.  Running Apple's disk utility to Repair Disk a few times usually fixes it.
It's just infuriating. Ever since Leopard came out with Time Machine I had had that intrusive, obnoxious utility permanently disabled. I enabled it in Lion, and I've disabled it again.

  • Unable to Rename Partitioned Drives

    Hello,
We have a Power Mac partitioned into 15 drives for use by our students. A few days ago the drives randomly started demanding an administrative password to change the name of each drive.
I have had this problem before with other Macs in our office. I have solved that problem by changing the ownerships & permissions of each drive. And when all else failed, I created a new administrator for the computer and the problem went away.
I tried both of these things on our Power Mac, yet the problem persists.
    Any advice?

I have gone through the ownerships & permissions and tried several different combinations of having the owner "locked/unlocked" and the "Ignore ownership of this volume" selected or de-selected. I get the same results regardless of these changes.
Strangely, EVERY TIME I restart the computer, I am able to once again re-name the volumes. But once the computer goes into sleep mode, the problem arises again.

  • Unable to access external drive.

I'm a newbie to macs. Tried to use my Maxtor One Touch III USB external hard drive which had previously been my windows backup drive, on my new mac. Copied all the files to the mac, reformatted it with Mac Extended and then copied the files back over to the drive. Everything was fine until I installed the "proper drivers" for the Maxtor drive and now the drive isn't recognized at all by the mac. A call to maxtor revealed that the USB drive is not supported on mac. My question is is there any way to "uninstall" these new drivers I installed and revert back to the native mac driver that originally recognized the drive? Any other ideas?

Congrats on the new iMac 24" and welcome to Apple Discussions... you've come to the right place.
Have you tried doing a search for the external drive software (drivers)? If not, click the round (blue or gray) icon top right of your screen, that is Spotlight. In the drop down search field type in the name of the software. Hopefully it will return the names of the files and where they are. If you locate the Maxtor files, drag them to the Trash.
If you get that far... go here and download a new driver for Macintosh:

  • Player on WD2 Black (Dual Drive) unable to access 2nd partition

    Host OS : Win 7 Pro (x64)
    Guest OS: XP Pro (x86)
I had a regular (mechanical) 500 GB hard drive (2 partitions OS and DATA) with W7P (x64) and VM Player 3.x running XPP for years with no problem.
I could access the 2nd partition through the Guest OS and modify/save files etc on it.
I just got a new WD2 Black Dual Drive (120GB SSD and 1TB mechanical in one unit) so technically there are 2 partitions on the drive.
I copied the entire Player (data) folder from the old drive to the new. I installed the same version of Player 3.x and tried to access the Guest OS - I am able to access it but unable to access network or usb drives (keep getting errors as it boots up also) etc.
So I started from scratch on new drive - installed vmplayer 3.x (even tried every version upto v 7.1.0) and installed Guest OS (XPP) again and now I am able to access the network and usb drives etc.
But when I add the 2nd partition in the settings and start the player I get an error that it cannot start because it cannot power up the scsi (2nd partition) drive and it shuts down.
If I remove the 2nd partition from settings it boots up fine.
I am able to access the 2nd partition in W7P with no problems.
In the Guest OS I am not able to access the 2nd partition.
I called WD Support and they said to call VMWARE support and the problem has nothing to do with the physical drive.
I have updated all the VMware tools (as recommended) but still not able to access the 2nd partition.
In W7P I had to install a "driver" software to access the 2nd partition. I tried to install the same thing in the Guest OS (XPP) it starts to install and then comes back and says it cannot see the 2nd partition.
Any help in this would be greatly appreciated as I would like to keep all the documents/data on the 2nd partition and be able to access the same from both the HOST and GUEST OS's without having to create duplicates or transfer them back and forth between the two.

OK FaiyazR, I think I see your core question.
When you first create a VM the only "disk" it knows is the virtual one.
If you want to access the physical disk or just specific files on the physical disk, you will have to set up a "Shared Folder". Here is one way to do it:
    While in VM Player:
Go to the "Player" button(screen upper-left)
    Select "Manage"
    Select "Virtual Machine Settings"
In the popup window select "Options"
In the "Options" menu select "Shared Folders"
    Click enabled
Click "Map as a network drive in Windows guests"
Click the "Add..." button which brings up the Shared Folder Wizard
Enter the "Host Path" to the partition (or folder) you wish to share. Repeat for next partition (or folder).
    Hope this helps.

  • I have suddenly become unable to access photo library  iPhoto (vers 9.5) on my external drive.  And time Machine will no longer back up to the same external (LaCie) drive.  Appreciate all suggestions.  The drive does show up on my desktop....

I have suddenly become unable to access photo library (iPhoto vers 9.5) on my external hard drive.  Also time machine isnt backing up to same external hard drive (LaCie).  The drive does show up on the desk top, but when i open iPhoto the library isnt listed, so I cant option click.

First, one should not try to run an iPhoto library from the same volume/drive that is being used by Time Machine for backups.  TM will continue to fill up the drive thus squeezing out iPhoto from being able to be opened and used. Also that doesn't allow you to let TM backup your library as it does with other files on your boot drive.
If you partition the EHD into two separate partitions you can run the library from it but that won't let TM backup the library which is important.
Are you able to see the library on the EHD via the Finder?  If so copy it back to your boot drive and open it there.  You may have to do some fixing on it.
Solution is to either run the library from the boot drive or get a second EHD to run the library from and let TM back it up along with your boot drive.

I have an external hard drive from my time capsule that stopped working on me. I am attempting to access the data with a hard drive reader on my MAC. I am able to see the drive in disk utility and under system info USB. But I am unable to access the data and it does not show on the desktop when connected.

Ok if disk utility was able to verify the drive I doubt there is any problem.. are you trying to open a TM backup??
You need to mount the sparsebundle then check the actual info inside the bundle.
Don't use disk warrior.. if the disk has verified then unless you deliberately deleted files there is nothing that is going to do.
Pondini has a lot of stuff about getting access to the sparsebundle.
    http://pondini.org/TM/17.html
But if you have copied info to the TC that is now gone.. and the disk is ok.. I am not sure.. the TC will not have deleted the files itself.

  • External Drive - Unable to access

So i've been struggling with this issue for several months now, sometimes finding a hack that allows me to use it but most of the time relying on my other drives. Now I need some of the info from the drive and I need to sort out this issue for once and for all.
When I plug in my external hard drive (Western Digital) to my USB drive I find the following takes place:
    1. Nothing appears in either the desktop or the finder
    2. If I open 'Disk Utility', the drive appears there but I cannot verify or repair the drive ("Unable to unmount drive"). I can succesfully 'eject' the drive, but as soon as I manually disconnect it, I get "Device Removal" error.
    3. If I try to connect the drive into my VMWare instance, it says that "the host is currently using the device"
    4. Each time I re-connect the drive, a new directory appears in the /Volumes/ directory with an incremented integer value in front of it (i.e. /Volumes/foo, /Volumes/foo 1, /Volumes/foo 2)
    5. For a while, I was able to succesfully umount the drive and then remount it and access it (my temporary fix/hack) but this no longer works - either I get "Incorrect Super Block" or "unknown special file or file system"
Questions I would love an answer to (and yes, I have googled but perhaps your google-fu is better than mine):
    1. How can I determine what still has an open handle on some file on the drive?
    2. Is there any way I can access the drive temporarily so that I can get the info off the drive and then reformat (drive is currently FAT32)
    3. Anybody know of a permanent fix?
Thank you so much, please let me know if any further info is needed or if you want me to try anything and I'll do my best,
    oldNoakes.

  • I was unable to access migrate assistant to reinstall my hard drive. I didn't know if it would work but I used the time machine restore button that opens up in the space movie. The computer said it would download it to "Volumes". Now I can't find it.

I was unable to access migrate assistant to restore my hard drive. Out of desperation and ignorance I opened up Time Machines space page and selected my most recent backup and pushed restore. The system accepted it and said it would intall in in "volumes". I was unable to figure out what that meant but I went a head a tried it. The download took four hours and then puff it was gone and so was my data. I can't find the back up anywhere. The only thing I think it might be is that I had named the hard drive a different name than the original (don't ask me why). Have any ideas?

Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and provide /Volumes/ as the path.

  • Yosemite OS and unable to access startup partition

I have a mac mini with the latest updates for Yosemite. I am unable to access the startup partition in order to run disk utility. I have been restarting the computer and holding the option key to access the startup. Any ideas what could be wrong or what I am not doing correctly?

You can run Disk Utility from OS X. You can find it in /Applications/Utilities.
However, if you need to repair your disk or something similar, you may need to start up in OS X Recovery. To do it, hold Command and R keys while your Mac is starting up until you see the Apple logo. After starting up in OS X Recovery, open Disk Utility and do what you need.
