Unable to access photos on external drive

I have Aperture 2.1.3 and I have been using Photo Mechanic to quickly import, edit, and save my photos to one of my external drives. I have been using Aperture to adjust some of these images by importing them into Aperture but the stored files have remained on the external drive. Suddenly, when I try to import the photos from external drive for Aperture manipulation the photos are not available for import. But the photos are viable on my external drive, and If I use Photoshop or Photo Mechanic, I CAN access and import these same files .
I hope this makes sense! I need advise!
thanks to all!

.plist is the preference file. Go to your User/Library/Preferences and take com.apple.Aperture.plist (the preferences are in alphabetical order) and put the file on your desktop. Then restart Aperture. Aperture will return to its default settings and there will be a new preference file in the Library/Preferences folder.
If this clears your problem, then your old plist file was corrupt and you should put it in the trash and rebuild your own preferences.
If you still have the problem after restarting Aperture, then it's not the plist file, and you can trash the new plist and restore your old one from the Desktop back into the Library/Preferences folder.
Have you tried to reboot the machine. Sometimes things go wrong in the connection with an external drive and rebooting the machine clears the problem. You could also reset the PRAM (on boot, hold down Command-Option-P-R and wait for the second chime). Sometimes the PRAM gets corrupted and this affects the relationship with external drives.
You could also import the RAW files into Aperture, instead of using them as referenced files.

  • Unable to access music on external drive

I have recently had to re-install Windows on my laptop - due to a virus. I had previously moved all my music to an external drive and successfully changed itunes to access it there - I changed the location folder in Edit/Preferences/Advanced then held down the shift key whilst launching Itunes thereby getting the option to choose a different library location. I now find that this option no longer appears when I launch Itunes with the shift key held down. I'm using Itunes 6.
    Anyone any ideas??
    Fortune laptop   Windows XP

I've now resolved the issue having found an article by Christopher Breen - in it he suggested -
"If you can locate your music files by rummaging around on your hard drive but iTunes seems dead set against showing them, use the Add to Library command in the File menu to find your music and add it again. Before doing so, open the Advanced tab of iTunes' preferences and make sure that the Copy Files to iTunes Music Folder When Adding to Library option is unchecked. With this option unchecked, song titles will be added to iTunes without the songs themselves being copied to the iTunes Music folder."
I tried this and I got all my albums back even though I lost some of my artwork and all of my playlists.... I can live with that!!

  • Unable to access music in external drive

Ex-windows user wants to know: All my music is stored in an external drive. How do I get to add all these into itunes library or play them?

Open iTunes and drag the folder which contains the music into the open iTunes window; iTunes will then copy the music to the hard disk and add it to the library.

  • Can't Access Photos on External Drive

I attach my external drive (Toshiba 320GIG) and open, which gives me the external drive window. I click on Toshiba on the left-hand-side menu, then begin to enter IMG in the search window. As soon as I type the first letter, the menu highlight defaults to my hard drive menu item and I can't search in my external drive. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks for reading. Any help appreciated.

So, you have two versions of iphoto? One from the old machine and one from the new?
If so, forget about opening with the older version of iPhoto.
    For the newer version:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • I have suddenly become unable to access photo library  iPhoto (vers 9.5) on my external drive.  And time Machine will no longer back up to the same external (LaCie) drive.  Appreciate all suggestions.  The drive does show up on my desktop....

I have suddenly become unable to access photo library (iPhoto vers 9.5) on my external hard drive.  Also time machine isnt backing up to same external hard drive (LaCie).  The drive does show up on the desk top, but when i open iPhoto the library isnt listed, so I cant option click.

First, one should not try to run an iPhoto library from the same volume/drive that is being used by Time Machine for backups.  TM will continue to fill up the drive thus squeezing out iPhoto from being able to be opened and used. Also that doesn't allow you to let TM backup your library as it does with other files on your boot drive.
If you partition the EHD into two separate partitions you can run the library from it but that won't let TM backup the library which is important.
Are you able to see the library on the EHD via the Finder?  If so copy it back to your boot drive and open it there.  You may have to do some fixing on it.
Solution is to either run the library from the boot drive or get a second EHD to run the library from and let TM back it up along with your boot drive.

  • I photo and external drive

how do i save photos to external drive and possibly set it up that all photos go to external drive so i can save room on my hard drive

    Hello Myron,
It can be very handy to store your iPhoto library (and your iTunes library for that matter) on an external drive. Make sure the drive is formated for Mac (MacOSExtended) rather than for Windows (MS-DOS, etc.). Storing Mac data on a windows formated drive reduces performance and can damage data over time.
Apple documents moving the library to other locations on their website: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iPhoto/7.0/en/6331.html
You can check to make sure your drive is formated correctly and re-format if needed following another knowledge base article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306143
Please be aware that if you do have to reformat the drive it will ERASE any information currently on the drive.
    Cheers!

  • Why won't photos from external drive stay on my computer (iPhoto) once I disconnect the external drive?

I'm trying to move photos from my external drive to my new computer.  When I connect the external drive, I'm able to view all the photos in iPhoto, and I'm able to drag photos to a desktop folder and/or directly into iPhoto.  But, when I disconnect the external drive, I no longer have access to the photos on my computer.  I'm sure there's a step I may be overlooking but I'm using the same process I've used in the past and cannot determine next steps.

    Thanks so far.
    I'm currently working on a 2012 MacBook Air 13", running OSX 10.8.
Upon opening my external drive, I've dragged the iPhoto Library to my computer's desktop.  When I've opened iPhoto and tried to import the library (from external drive and/or from the desktop), I'm unable to do so, i.e., the library is not highlighted (it won't allow me to click on it).
I can open and view the library from my external drive in iPhoto when the external drive is connected to the computer.  But, once the external drive is disconnected from the computer, I'm unable to view the library
I've tried all of the aforementioned when the "Copy Imported Item(s) to the iPhoto Library" is checked.

  • Deleting photos from external drive when referenced (not copied) to iPhoto

Hi, I've seen similar posts, but none of them really answers my question.
I have an external NAS drive with RAID, where I keep ALL my data, because I use number of ways to access them. I also have my photos there. I recently bouht MAC MINI and I want to use it to organise my photos. Because I have only 80G drive on MAC, I choose to import the photos from the external drive to iPhoto, NOT copying them to it's own library but rather referencing them only.
Now the question I have - When I delete a photo in iPhoto by putting it to Trash and then empty the trash, the file still stays on the external drive, although it disapperas from iPhoto library. This is uselesss to me, because I WANT the file to be deleted from the external drive (orginizaing the files, right?).
The only way I found I can do this is clicking on the file in iPhoto, selecting "find file on disk" then deleting the file from disk, then deleting from iPhoto, one by one. That is no way to do it, I would rather use Picasa instead, although I like iPhoto more, I think it is superior in almost everything else.
One more question: is there a way to see a list of directories imported to iPhoto?
    thanks,
    J.

    J.
What I need is to delete the file when I "look" at it,
Use a File Organiser. That’s what they are for, organising files. Other than that, if you’re using a database application such as iPhoto then you have to use the application to manipulate the data.
    You ask a question:
But I am still wondering why isn't there any setup option to actually allow iPhoto to delete referenced files.
    and the answer
I know it may cause some problems for some user,
iPhoto is firmly focussed on the home user with a point and shoot camera. It’s very effective at what to does, but it does very simple things. Any setting that could lead to inadvertent data loss is avoided. (There are occasional posts on the forum from folks who uncheck that ‘Copy Files to Library on Import‘ setting but who then don’t actually move the files from the camera. They wonder why iPhoto has “lost their photos“.)
You mention that you’re using the NAS so that access your photos in a number of ways. IF you can tell us what ways you use, perhaps we can help.
I just need to know which directories I imported to iPhoto.
How are these directories organised? Named?

  • USING I PHOTO With photos on external drives only

HOW CAN I ACCESS I PHOTO LIBRARIES OR CREATE NEW ONES USING ONLY EXTERNAL DRIVES so I don't have to Import to computer and fill up my HD

Sure. Drag the iphoto library (users-->[home]-->pictures) to the external drive and wait for it to copy. Then, delete the original iphoto library by dragging it to the trash and emptying the trash. The next time you launch iphoto, it will prompt you for a library. Select "Other Library" and choose the library on the external drive. It will now remember to reference the library on the external drive.

  • Accessing photos from hard drive using photoshop starter edition 3.2

Hi, I have recently bought an external hard drive and have now copied all my photos from my c drive to my external hard drive. I would now like to access my photos directly from the external hard drive as well as download photos from my camera directly onto the external hard drive, can someone please help? I am currently using Adobe Photoshop Starter Edition 3.2 and running Microsoft XP. I read somewhere that I will need to change something in the Organizer, is this possible for Adobe Starter Edition 3.2?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Christina Fletcher

    Hi Christina,
The only thing you will encounter in doing is you might have to repeat
the process of bringing the images back into PSA SE because unlike the
Elements Family, it does not have the ability to move things.
I would suggest trying two things:
    1. Begin by moving the images and then (AFTER YOU MOVE THE IMAGES) click
on File>Reconnect all files. The problem with this method is you have
reconnect EACH file separately. Not a very pleasant option.
    2. (Recommended) If you are not worried about tagging as much, then
simply click on Get Photos>From Folder and then pick the External Drive.
It might force you to pick a certain folder, so I do recommend keeping
them in something like My Picture Ext so that it is easier for you, but
    it will do it.
    Cheers

  • Simple way to store old photos on external drive?

I've got 12,000 or so old photos that seem to gum up iPhoto whenever I launch it.  I want to save the pics and keep them available but don't need them to be accessable each and every time I launch iPhoto.  Is there a simple way to store the bulk of these on an external drive?

You could create a new, "holding" library on the EHD and use  iPhoto Library Manager to transfer the photos from your working library to the holding library.  Then when you've verified that the holding library has the photos safe and sound you can delete them from your working library.  This way you can keep the keyword, titles and comments and edited versions ready to view and use by open the library with iPhoto or transfer those you need back to the working library.

  • How can i access my lacie external drive with os mountain lion

I have just upgradet my macbook pro from snow leopard to mountain lion, and now i can't restore my backed up files from my Lacie external drive.
When i try to connect to it through time machine or migration assistant i get the message:
"the version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported"
I have tried to enable all UAMs but i still can't connect.
I have browsed after other similar situations, but i can't seem to find any though i'm hardly the only one with this problem.

If the backup was made using time machine, you should be able to access any files you need or want manually using the finder. It may not be pretty, but it should work. I don't know why the migration assistant would be unable to access it though.
If you can't access the contents of the backup with the finder, then I would say your problem is a bit more serious.

  • How do I move my photos to external drive

How do I move some of my photos to an external drive to free up space on my hard drive?

And what if I want some of my photos still on my internal drive?
Can I tell iphoto which events I want on the external?
I opened a new library on the external drive. This is working quite good - exept with AppleTV2
So I am looking for a way to have only one (my default library) on the hard drive, but have SOME of the actual date on the external drive...
Mr.Churchil here already suggested to create a new user with an own library. That sounds logical to me - but I don't knwo how to do it...
Can I transfer whole events or photos from one library to another than?

  • Trying to restore photos from external drive and realized TimeMachine had been turned off.  Found in Imac backup folder in iPhoto library a modified folder with many of the missing pics.  Can I restore these?

I recently had a hard drive crash on my iMac.  After replacing the drive, I discovered that TimeMachine had apparently been turned off for six months, and all my photos from that period were missing after the restore.  In looking on the external drive used by TimeMachine, I discovered a folder called Imac backup, and under iPhoto Library was a folder called Originals and subfolders for each year.  To my surprise, there were photos covering the missing time period!  Somehow I imported the 2011 folder from the external drive into iPhoto, and then I discovered they were small files of less than 100 KB each, not the 1-2 MB original photos.  So now all of 2011 is screwed up, not just from May on.  These photos also include faces pulled from many larger group photos.
I can get Jan - April restored using TimeMachine.  But in continuing to explore the Imac backup folder, I found a similar folder in iPhoto Library called Modified.  This folder has many of the missing photos in their original MB size in folders indexed by date for the missing period after April.  Is there a way that I can get these modified photos back onto my new hard drive and into the iPhoto library without causing more damage?  If TimeMachine was turned off after April, how did those modified photos and all those small images from the missing period find their way to the external drive?
    Any wisdom greatly appreciated.

What you want to do is merge the two Libraries? The only way to do this is to use the paid ($20) version of iPhoto Library Manager
I created a new iPhoto Library on the iMac and dragged the entire iPhoto Library from the MacBook into that new Library. It worked, however it all came over into one big album and my previous album structure was gone
Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.

  • Itunes accesses files on external drive but not showing in finder

I'm running OS  10.6.8. I have an external NTFS drive that I read and wirte to using NTFS mounter. I have files that iTunes show are in a folder on the external drive. iTunes will even play the songs. When I navigate to that folder in Finder there are no files displayed. I connected the drive to a PC and navigated to the folder. Windows says the file (folder) is corrupt. How is it possible that iTunes can read the files? How can I get read & write access to my files?

You'll have to try to repair the drive on a PC.
How is it possible that iTunes can read the files?
Some things will still be readable when corruption occurs, the big problem is when writing occurs when there's corruption.
