Unable to add contacts to address book from Mail

When I mouse over a phone number (or address) in an email message in Mail, an arrow appears that lets me add a new contact with that phone number directly to address book from mail. Unfortunately, when I fill in the information and click "add to address book," the little window disappears but the contact does not appear in my address book.
Any suggestions for fixing this? Thanks!

Thank you so much V.K. Your solution worked for me too.
BTW, I actually had two similar files in the app support:
AddressBook-v22.abcddb AND AddressBook-v22~.abcddb
I deleted both, but only the first one gave me the cannot empty trash message.

Although clunky as you say, this sounds like a reasonably efficient way to accomplish what I was seeking.
Address Book has no global find/replace. Bob Grove suggested one possible workaround; however, a grep-capable text editor (eg, TextWrangler) is better than TextEdit if complex strings are involved.
An alternative is Bento (which is designed specifically to interact with the AB database), but it's not free.

  • How can I sync the address book from Mail to my Address book?

Ok, I open a new message and click on the Address Book icon in the new message to find my contacts on the address book, I choose the group I am looking for and the group has people on it that I have already deleted from my address book! How can I sync the address book from Mail to my Address book?

It is using the same database on disk. You may have to re-launch Mail.

  • HT2486 How do I export a mailbox to address book from Mail

How do I export a mailbox to address book from mail?

Unless you are willing to continually do an export of one contacts database and import of the other, switching back and forth, you'll either need to use some third-party contacts application or maintain two separate user accounts in Mac OS X. The built-in Address Book/Contacts application does not allow multiple address books.

  • Apple Mail: How do I add contacts to address book?

In the Apple Mail program, there is an option to add sender to address book. But when I do that, it just adds the sender to my address book, oftentimes without a name associated to the contact. So that contact could easily get lost.
I'd like to be able to add a sender from Apple Mail, then, at a later point, go to the address book and review who I've added, and edit their information.
Is there a way to add the sender to the address book, and have that contact added to a default folder within address book. That way I could later go back and review a bunch of contacts I've added at the same time. Thanks.

Adding an address to Address Book opens Address Book so that you can edit the card before saving it.  Is that not happening for you, or is that happening but you want to ignore it until you're ready to go add other information?
If the latter, you could always create a smart group in Address Book with the criteria "Name" "is not set".  Then just go in now and then and add names to everything in that group.  Of course, the problem with this technique is you may have to go back and find that address in Mail and refresh your memory as to who it belongs to.  It would probably be quicker, overall, to just add the name at the time you're adding the contact.

  • Using main email address of contacts inside Address Book with Mail 3.5

    Hi all,
I am organizing a christmas dinner for 20th of December and I have inside address book a group called dinner. I have got 100 contacts and some of them have two email addresses. Some people have told me to send all the information to personal addresses. So when I create the email and call address book from the email message, it let me choose between both email addresses with a blue line. This choice is kept for next time and when I send the email message works but some people is still receiving the mail at the office. I wonder... how can I select the main email address for next time so I would only need moving the "dinner group icon" over the recipient line and that´s all?. Does anybody knows the way of doing that?
    Regards,

If you selected their home email address and some say they get it at their work email, then it would seem that they are forwarding their email to their work address. If that's the case, there's nothing you can do about that.
You could always duplicate the group with a different name (Dinner work, for example) and remove their personal email addresses from the contacts in the group, as well as removing the work addresses from the original group.

  • I cannot add contacts to my address book from Mail?

When I click on the email address down arrow and select add to address book I get no error message but the address does not get added to the contacts list. Please Help!!

Same thing happens to me. Running 10.9.2 on Macbook Air. Everything worked fine up until a few weeks ago then it stopped behaving.

  • Cannot modify or add contacts to Address Book

I tried updating a contact today by adding a new phone number and everything seemed to be okay until I quit and restarted Address Book. When address book loaded again, the new phone number was gone. I tried this again with several contacts and tried creating a new contact and I can confirm that the address book is not saving changes or saving new contacts after a quit and re launch of Address Book.
I've tried rebooting and repairing permissions, same problem.
Console is giving me the error:
    9/6/09 11:32:44 AM Address Book[212] couldn't write file '/Users/jax/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/Metadata/C49788A4-134A-11D9-8A52-000A95CCEC6C:ABPerson.abcd p'
But there is no explanation of why it cannot write the file.
I am running a new clean install of Snow Leopard with minimal installed software and I imported an address book archive that I exported from Leopard 10.5.8.
I tried deleting my entire ~/Application Support/AddressBook folder and re importing the old address book database, and I get the same issue.
If I delete ~/Application Support/AddressBook and then launch address book and attempt to add or modify a contact in my new empty address book, all of the sudden all my old contacts appear even after deleting the ~/Application Support/AddressBook folder. Where are they coming from.
Is it just me or is AddressBook in SnowLeopard incredibly buggy?

I have had zero problems with Mail in Snow Leopard - it's been rock solid and very reliable for me.
I sort of cured the AddressBook problem but I have no idea why it works and I am not happy with my fix. What I did was deleted the contents of ~/Application Support/AddressBook and ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.AddressBook and ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.addressbook.plist. I then rebooted and opened up AddressBook. The database was empty except for Apple and my own card which OSX creates by default. I then attempted to create a new contact and all of my old contacts magically appeared! I then deleted the new test contact and edited the contact I was originally trying to add a phone number to. I then quit address book and re-launched it and the new phone number was still there! I checked console.log and there were no errors reported this time (previously I was getting lots of error messages each time I quit and re-launched AddressBook.
I have no idea where those contacts came from since I cleared out the entire database and the cache, but whatever happened, it seems to work now.
    BUGGY!

  • Add to Address Book from Mail

    Hi,
What i'm trying to do is pretty simple. I recieve an email in the mail app and want to add the sender to my address book. I right click on the email, and click 'Add to Address Book'. The problem is it always mixes up the first and the last names. So 'Mark Jones' would have Mark as a surname and Jones as a first name. I have tried using different 'sort by' options (although i don't think that makes a difference).
It worked briefly for a couple of hours when I transferred to the iCloud.
This has been happening since I got a Mac with Snow Lepoard a couple of years back. Back then I did actually import my contacts from Gmail, although in trying to fix the problem, i've started with a blank slate but this still makes no difference.
I used to use Mobileme and now use iCloud to sync my mail and address book.
Is this happening to anyone else? I've looked around and found nothing.
    Cheers.

I think that there is a bug in either Mail or Address Book. It seems that the sender's Display Preferences prevail if they differ from yours, so you then have to choose Card…Swap First/Last name.
A truly intelligent app. would identify which is First Name and which Last Name and would adjust them to conform to the Receiver's Address Book Display Preferences.

  • Why won't mail add contact to address book?

When I click on the email address in the "From" field of a message in Mail, I get the option to "Add to Address Book." But it doesn't actually add the contact; when I search my address book forby that name, nothing comes up. When I then go back to Mail, I again get the "Add to Address Book" option. I "Add" again, then click "Show Contact Card," and I see something like "740ACE68-521B-4FDC-AA9B-42583457345...:ABPerson." When I click "Open with Address Book," again there's no entry.
Running OS 10.7.5 I've run Disk Utility to Repair Permissions, but that hasn't helped. I've looked for any files including "Address Book" in Preferences and Cache, but there aren't any.
    Any ideas??
    Thank you!

Just solved the problem myself after finally finding someone else had the problem. Had to change permissions of Users/[Username]/Library/Application Support/Address Book/AddressBook-v22.abcddb
In case any one else has this problem!

  • Automatically adding contacts to Address Book with Mail?

    Hello all,
This is my first post in the Apple Discussion forum, but I'm a happy Mac owner since July 2007. Here's a question I have; I searched to see if a similar topic appeared in previous discussions, but none turned up.
In Microsoft Outlook (on my work PC), I can set it up so that anytime I reply to an e-mail address from somebody new, the contact is automatically added to my address book. Is there a way to set that up with Mail and/or Address Book?
I was going through Address Book and noticed some VERY old contacts, but I know for some of them, I have more recent e-mail address. I hope I don't have to manually add all of them!
Thanks in advance for your help!
    All the best,
    MARK

Hi Mark, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Sadly, I don't know how to do it for received Mail, but ones you've sent to can be done in Mail. Select Window Menu item>Previous Recipients, press Command-A when the new window appears, and then click Add to Address Book, then in Address Book>Card Menu Item, select look for Duplicates.
