Unable to backup 8 GB .mov file

I have an 8.16 GB .mov file that I can easily view in Quicktime on my computer and is on one of my hard drives. My computer has begun dying on me frequently and I'm trying to get my important files backed up (this one is important to me) to an external hard drive. This file will not copy to my external Lacie drive, or my other hard drive. I get an error that reads: "The finder cannot complete the operation because some data could not be read or written. (Error code -36)" This usually happens after it is a ways through the copying process.
As far as I know the largest writable DVDs are 7GBs?
Does anyone know a good way/program to compress this file in order to burn it to a DVD, or a program that can repair the file or convert it to another format?
I put it on my hard drive 5 years ago so remembering the details is a little sketchy, it's a home video I believe I put there by attaching a VCR to a camcorder to my computer.
Thanks for your time,
M

Open the file, say it is an hour for arguments sake, not sure how long it is for 8GB but we'll say that. Go to the beginning press I (in) to set the in point. Then move the cursor to 15:00 minutes. Press O (out) to set the out point.
Then do CMD+C (copy) CMD+N (new player window) CMD+V (paste) and that 15 minute chunk is in a new player. Save as , say Movie 1 of 4.mov
Move to 15:00, set in and at 30:00 set out. Copy and paste that into a new player and save as Movie 2 of 4 . Repeat for 30 - 45 and 45 - 60.
You now have the same movie not recompressed in 4 files each 2 GB in size. Save them on DVD's or the like.
Reassembly is the reverse. Open 1 of 4. Set cursor to the end of the clip , e.g at 15:00. Open 2 of 4. CMD+A (select all) CMD+C (copy) then click on the 1st player window (the one at the end of 15:00) and CMD+V paste.
You now have a 30 minute movie. Repeat pasting 3 and 4 of 4 to the end of the first one (well 3 gets pasted to the end of what was 2 and is now the 30 minute mark and 4 gets pasted to the end of that activity which will now be 45 minutes long).
Save as Movie "all of all" or whatever name you like. It's back in one piece. QT will cut to the frame precisely. You can set the time indicator to a frame indicator by CTRL/Right + click on it. More accurate that way. To make your 4 chunks.
Kirk was saying you probably have a drive originally in FAT32 that works on Windows/mac but has a 4GB maximum file limit. If you can back it all up onto some other drive for a while and repartition in HFS+ for OSX you won't have the problem with large files. But no, don't repartition/format while it has the only copy of the data on it.

Itunes cannot start its backup process because it cannot find this "Shrink Wrap" file that it is asking me to play before I continue. It isn't a song in my library, and I have no idea what this means. The error message really isn't any more descriptive than that. Please help if you've experienced this before!
    Thanks.

Thanks for the quick reply. I had read something like that as well. So it would be correct to assume that iTunes has some kind of built-in compression mechanism that allows it to put my backup my library on ONLY 17 discs! Must be stuffing it down pretty small :<0 ... but I can't seem to figure out how this feature broke or what kind of steps I could take to troubleshoot. Might have to call Apple on this one.

  • IDVD unable to display Quicktime HD  mov files as 16:9 format  :

    Hi there.
The problem I have is that iDVD simply does not display the 16:9 format for the quicktime movie clips (less than 3 minutes) made with the screen size setting HIGHER than HD 1280 X 720 16:9. iDVD shows the higher resolutions i.e a.HD 1440 X 1080 16:9 and b. HD 1920 X 1080 16:9 as squeezed 4:3 format. It displays correctly with 16:9 aspect ration for the screen size of HD 1280 X 720 16:9/
The iDVD projects are all created with 16:9 aspect ratio . How can I get iDVD to display the higher HD resolutions in widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio. ?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi
There are NO HD version of iDVD AT ALL !
The DVD standard is also limited to SD-video
Only way to get HD - as I know of is
    • Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro incl. Blue-Ray component
    • Blue-Ray burner + disks (short ones can be done on DVD with Mac Superdrive)
    • Can only be played on a BR-Player eg PlayStation 3

  • No thumbnails or playback of MOV files in Adobe Bridge CC

    Hi
I recently downloaded and installed the latest version of Bridge from the Creative Cloud and I am unable to view thumbnails of .MOV files taken with an Apple iPhone5. I am able to open the file but there is no audio or video in the playback. Anyone else have similar issues? I am able to view these same files in Lightroom CC fine. I am using Windows 7 64-bit. Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Only thing I can think of is there must have been some kind of mixup in
the transfer process. Here's what I did: I plugged her phone into our
Macbook Air at home and transferred her stills and movies off from her
camera (using iPhoto) to a connected portable hard drive. From there I
copied and pasted the files onto a removable thumb drive. From there I
brought them to work on my PC and copied them off to a portable hard drive
there. Seems to me the MOV files got lost in translation somehow. It's
possible I didn't do this correctly? I know with MY iPhone images and
movies I copied them directly from my phone onto my computer (PC) when it
showed up as a device in my device listing. It wanted to use iTunes for
this but I bypassed iTunes and did it the old fashioned way. These are the
files that I am able to view correctly on my PC at work in Bridge. So I
guess I need to recheck my workflow here.

Unable to delate the iPhone4 old backup data after move to iPhone5 ToT
How can I delete the old phone backup file to release iCloud space?

I have done some digging, but no dice. It seems to be a known bug in the system. Some suggested going to an Apple Retail Store about the problem, but no solutions as of yet. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
One board post I saw said taking it to the retail store did get it fixed for him. Maybe you will have the same luck?

  • Unable to import movie files from iphoto '08 into imovie HD

I have recently bought a 2008 macbook (2.2 GHz) and have recently downloaded imovie HD in addition to owning iLife '08 due to its extra capabilities. I have found that I am unable to import any of my movie files from my iphoto library folder as it seems to need to open the actual iphoto application before the files can be accessed. In addition, when not using any specific program it would be nice to be able to access my photo/video files within the iphoto folder without iphoto automatically opening as the default viewer.
    Any ideas??!! Thanks.

.. and I import AVI video clips directly without converting to .dv, without problems.
lucky you.. .avi is just a container, no 'format'/codec .. I can show you dozends of .avis, which will NOT import into iMHD6, due to being playback-codecs, not convertable by the underlying Quicktime engine into separte, editable audio+video streams ..
.. If you convert to .dv, the size just blows up.
dv is 13GB/h and a codec meant for editing; e.g. it stores every frame (video=30 frams/sec) of a recording, as mpegs usually doesn't do so.. = your Mac has to estimate content, when converting and 'recovering' the content = lossy process.
iMHD6 is a dv-editor; the mpeg4 feature is only a toy, to spice up iSight recordings.. for sure, the QTengine can convert a lot, but too much conversion (from one lossy codec, e.g. divx, into another, e.g. mp4) means a (dramatic) loss of pic quality..
    my 5€ cents ..

  • "Error: Final Cut Pro was unable to read the movie file just captured"

    Hello everyone!
We had a computer crash while we were working on Final Cut Pro and backing up some media to a hard drive.
Since then, whenever we "capture' video footage and hit the escape key to stop capturing - we get -
"Error: Final Cut Pro was unable to read the movie file just captured"
We reinstalled the Final Cut Pro software all over again thinking that maybe the software got corrupted and we also rectified any disk permissions for the hard drives.
    Any ideas?

You eventually want to figure out how that happened and make sure you fix it.

You reformatted the external drive, yes? You might not have used the correct initialization setting. Should be Macintosh HFS, journalling is optional. Or you have a drive formatted for Winderz.
Aside from incorrect drive formatting, we have seen this error if the capture is incomplete or improperly terminated.
It's not an FCP issue, it's hardware.

  • I have lots of .MOV files on my iPhone5 that I need to transfer to my PC.  Using QuickTime Player 7.7.4 I am unable to view them once they have been copied to a hard drive or directly from the iPhone via USB. 1% of the time a vid is viewable

I can tranfer them to a hard drive on my PC, but am unable to view most of them using QuickTime Player 7.7.4. Doesn't matter if I'm viewing them via a USB connection to my iPhone5 or from a hard drive after the file has been copied via USB.  1% of the vids are viewable, 20% open with a black screen and audio only. The rest open with a blue, purple and green stryrated mess and no audio.  Yes its a Quick Time problem I know but where do I post this question in the community?  Also searching my drives for other .MOV files downloaded from the net I find the same problem with them.

Heres what I don't like about VLC, but at least the files are viewable...somewhat.
    1. You can't flip the image 90degrees, needs to have a rotate feature for sure.  This needs to have keyboard shortcut so vids can be rotated easily as one may have shot video horizontally and vertically in the same take.
    2. Opens file to a very large window, most of it off the screen, it should REMEMBER what you resized it to, so the next time a video is played you don't have  to drag the window back on the screen so you can get to the resizing handle in the lower corner.
    3.  Doesn't buffer while playing, so the movies are extremely erractic, starting and stopping every 3 seconds, highly annoying.
OK so maybe my PC is too slow, its a dual processor 486 Hyperrthread 2.8G but I only have 2Gigs of memory, however, bettery than 50% of the memory is still available while playing a vid (memory is checked every 4 seconds with a program), but I have 90-100% CPU useage going on while playing.
Maybe I should think about a new computer.

it depends. at the beginning of every backup TM checks to see what needs to be backed up and does it. at the end of a backup it does another very quick backup to see if anything has changed since the start of the backup. if you move a file after TM already backed it up it will back it up in both places. if you move it before it has a chance to back it up, it will only back it up in the new location.
thanks is it reccomended not to use a computer during backup?
no, you can use the computer normally while the backup takes place. it's not supposed to interrupt the work flow. Indeed, given the fact that it runs every hour it would be utterly unreasonable to expect people to stop what they are doing every hour to let TM do its thing.

  • If you move files to external disk in PSE 7, are those files backed up when you Backup Catalog

My catalog is now about 50 GB and I want to decrease its size so that it takes less space on my hard disk and, more importantly, so my backups and restores don't take so long.    These are files that will not be edited in the future so why keep backing them up?  If I move files offline to an external disk using File, Copy/Move Files to Removable Disk will Elements backup those files as well as the files on my C Drive when I backup my catalog?
Alternatively, can I move files to a new catalog along with the assciated catalog data (such as albums, tags, etc.)?
    Thanks for any help.

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
If you use incremental backups, how often should you do a full backup?
No hard-and-fast rule.  The more incrementals there are, the longer it could take to do a restore.  I suggest starting out doing a full backup every 10 incrementals.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
I also backup my backups to a 2nd external drive.  Can I use PSE to do that 2nd backup (including the incremental backups) or do I need to copy the backup folders created the first time to a 2nd external disk using Win Explorer?
I think using Windows Explorer to copy them to the 2nd external drive will be easier and faster.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
I assume when moving to the new computer I just plug in the external drive containing the backup from the old computer (including incremental backup folders) and go through a normal restore.
    Right.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
When I do a full backup, does PSE include the picture files stored on an external drive?
    Yes.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
When I restore that backup to a new computer, does PSE restore the files which were on an external drive on the old computer to an external drive on the new computer, or would I have to move them from the new computer to an external drive  again?
I think that if you select the Original Location restore option, it will restore them to the external drive, but I haven't tried that.  You could make a small test catalog with a few photos and try it.

  • Burning large QT .mov file to DL-DVD for backup

    Hello
To be clear. I am not interested in creating a DL-DVD for playback on a set top DVD player connected to a television.
Rather, I haver a 6+GB .mov file that I would prefer to keep intact and burn to a DL-DVD. I need to do this mainly for backup purposes and would like to try & avoid manually cutting up the file into multiple smaller .mov files in FCS. The file has already been compressed using the H.264 codec and I would like to avoid any further compression.
So, my question is, can I burn this file to a data DL-DVD without having to worry about the "break point" on the DL-DVD corrupting my QT .mov file?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Tim

Unless I'm missing something Video Monkey is an encoder. I've already encoded the video so that is not an issue.
I'm trying to find out whether or not I can burn my 6+gig .mov file to a data DL-DVD without the "break point" corrupting the file for the purpose of backing it up should the copy on my HDD get corrupted.
    Thanks for the reply though.
    Tim

  • FCP5: Capture ERROR: "FCP was unable to read movie file just captured"

Something I've never had trouble before has just happened: I get the following error message when I try to capture DV footage as soon as it has completed the capture: "FCP was unable to read the movie file just captured" It doesn't matter what length the file is.
I am using a Sony Z1 and have captured hundreds of hours of footage. I tried capturing HDV footage and it works fine. My sequence and capture settings all match what's on tape.
When I try in iMovie HD, it captures DV fine.
I checked software update and there's nothing for me right now. The only thing that has changed on my system is updating to OS 10.5.4 along with the Quicktime and iTunes updates. Could that be the problem? But why does iMovie work fine then?
Any ideas would be mucho appreciado

Forgot to add, if I capture that same HDV tape but downsample it to DV within the camera, it also does not save the captured file. Thanks
