Unable to Backup Hard System

Hi All!,
I have a Thinkpad T42
Os: Windows XP Prof.
Rescue and RecoveryV3.10.0022.00.  I recently update to this version of Rescue and Recovery from version 1.0
I tried to backup my hard drive, and although a status bar appears it remains at 0%. I also tried to backup data to a cd and the same thing occured. How can I solve this problem?

those messages indicate directory damage which should be repaired asap. any kind of strange sounds a drive makes indicate that it might be failing altogether. check its S.M.A.R.T status. start disk utility, select the drive (the model, not the drive name) and read off the S.M.A.R.T status at the bottom of the window. if it doesn't say "verified" the drive is failing and needs to be replaced asap. you'd be well advised to backup the data on the drive as soon as you can.
In the absence of the leopard install DVD you can try to repair the drive from Single User Mode.
Restart and hold command+S at the chime. Ablack screen with some white text will com up.
at the prompt enter
/sbin/fsck -fy
that's the repair drive command. wait for it to finish. if it reports any errors run it again till there are none. when done enter
reboot

  • Successfully upgraded to 3.3 Unable to backup to external hard drive. Aperture closes unexpectedly without error message.

Upgrade to 3.3 was successful. My library is stored on an external hard drive and I have vaults stored on different hard drives. Aperture seems to be functiong OK but I am unable to backup to my external hard drives. The application seems to go through the process of upgrading the library again and quits unexpectedly at step seven without an error message. Anyone come up with a work around before Apple sorts this bug out?

What do you mean when you say "unable to backup to my external drives"?  Are you updating your Vaults?  If so, are you able to create a new Vault?  If you are, create them and confirm that they work.  If they work, delete the old Vaults and keep the new ones.

  • Unable to backup to external hard drive with new Mac Mini

I have been using a 1TB iOmega MiniMax external hard drive to backup my Mac Mini that was running on OS X 10.6.8.  I recently replaced the Mac Mini with a newer model running on OS X 10.9.5.  I successfully recovered all my files from the backup hard drive onto the new Mac Mini.  However, since then I am not able to   do either an automatic Time Machine backup or a manual backup.  I'm wondering if I need to update the iOmega MiniMax driver to be compatible with the newer OS X.  So far I have not been able to locate any updated drivers.  The new Mac Mini is able to recognize the old data that were previously backed up, but will not complete a new backup.  Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks for the help.  When I got the new Mac Mini, I was able to restore all my files from the iOmega HD backup.  But since then each time I try a TM backup I see the in work wheel spinning (in Finder) but no backup is made.  No error messages are given.  I will try the trouble shooting list you sent.  Thanks again.

We need to check that the drive has been enabled to burn with Adobe software. Open the Registry Editor (regedit.exe) and navigate here:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E3 25-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Look for LowerFilters. Verify that it has PxHelp20 listed as a value. If it doesn't, you may need to reinstall Photoshop Elements. If it is there with something else, then the mostly likely cause of the issue is another software is conflicting with Elements. You may have to uninstall other disk burning software to allow Elements to work.

  • Can I use the third party software to backup my system?

I have bought a new Thinkpad, and I just want to backup my system, but Lenovo Onekey recovery is not easy to use. I confess that it is very concise and powerful. But, I have to say some disadvantage, that is, It need to press the button and shut all computer. I want to backup my computer silently, and the process won't affect my other operation. I have searched a software- AOMEI Onekey Recovery, but it is the third party software, should I use it to backup my system. there seems to be more powerful in their page http://www.backup-utility.com/onekey-recovery.html, how should I determine? could anyone tell me the advantage or disadvantage?

Can I use the new Time Capsule to backup my mid 2010 Macbook Pro?
Yes, if you are asking about using Time Machine to backup the Mac.
Also can I want to free up my hard disk, can I save my photos and files on the time capsule and later access through wifi?
You are not thinking of deleting the photos and files on your Mac, are you?  If you do this, you will have no backups for those files.
Another concern is that Time Machine backs up the changes on your Mac. At some point, Time Machine will automatically delete the photos and files from the Time Capsule.....you just don't know when this might occur.
In other words, only delete files from your Mac that you can afford to lose.

  • New to Mac, How to backup my system?

Hi, I was recently given a non-working G4 400 (PCI) PowerPC. Up until receiving this Mac I had never actually seen one in real life... PCs dominate over here in the UK. I'm a CompTIA A+ Certified PC Technician so have no problems working with hardware.
After searching some trouble-shooting guides I found that it wasn't recognising the drive so I pulled it and tested it on my main PC using a diagnostic CD. As I thought it was shot. After a bit more searching I found I could use any IDE drive up to 128gb to replace it and popped in a spare 40gb Maxtor and swopped the CD-Rom for a DVD-Rom, then used disc utility on an iBook G4 disc I was given to initialise the drive. But couldn't get the OS (OS X 10.3.4) to install as it only had 128mb of ram at the time (the ram sticks had no stickers to indicate type and size).
So I checked the specs for OS X and after some more searching found I didn't need to upgrade the firmware on this model to be able to install it. So I swopped the Ram for 4x 128mb sticks and changed the pram battery as it kept resetting the date and time. I was then able to install and update the OS. Since then it's been working fine.
For the last couple of days I've just been learning how to do the basic stuff like install and uninstall and generally just finding my way around the Gui. I'm now at the stage where I would like to backup the system so that in the event of a disaster I can restore everything as it is now.
At the moment I have no external drives, zip drive or DVD-RW so I would like to make a backup to the second partitian. What utility should I use to do this and how?

I would like to backup the system so that in the event of a disaster I can restore everything as it is now<<</div>
If you backup to another partition (volume) of the same drive, that's hardly a preventative measure against disaster ... disaster being; hard drive failure, fire, flood, theft and my more possibilities.
To help with any real disaster recovery you'll need to back up your data off-site. You can set up a .Mac account or use any FTP site to backup and store data safely. Or purchase an external DVD burner to create regular backup discs for storage in a safe deposit box.

  • SQUIRRELLY  Leopard Server and Unable to Backup using Anything!

I upgraded from 10.4 to 10.5.2 Leopard server, and am having some difficulties that I can't resolve.
The server is running on an Intel dual core MacMini, and is primarily used for email. It isn't serving any webpages at the moment. The install was "from scratch" and not some kind of upgrade; only the mail was moved over from the previous server using Mail BFR.
I have been unable to backup the server in any way. I have tried:
    • Superduper (2.5) which is how I backed up the previous server without problem
    • Carbon Copy Clone
    and now
    • Time Machine
The first two would run about 2/3 the way thru, and the computer would "freeze" (mouse activity but nothing would work, required hard reset to recover). No logs available as the problem does not leave anything showing the problem.
Time Machine was tried today, and it ran about 1/2 the server (only 18GB) and kernel panic resulted (log below).
Tried all the usual troubleshooting methods; rebuild permissions, ran deep-cleaning, etc.
I hate to have to restart the whole process from scratch.
    Thanks

That is definitely the intended operation sorry, this is done so that if you have encrypted the device no one can just plug your phone into a PC and pull all the data off.

  • Time Machine unable to Backup!!!

Please help.  I am unable to backup to my time machine since I downloaded the new Lion.  Says no disk is available.

I'm having the same problem.  I tried re-selecting, but got an error message -- "there's a problem connecting. . ." with a suggestion I check the IP address.
I assume that means you're backing-up to a Time Capsule?  If not, what are you backing-up to?
If so, you may need to reset it, per Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule FAQ.  Try a soft reset; if that does't work, try a hard reset.
If still no help, you might also try resetting Time Machine, per #A4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
I don't know if related, but I am also having trouble with my internet provider (Cox).  I can get to the internet, except for the ISP's website.  Also, I cannot get mail or send mail from Cox.  I'd go to their website, but it times out.  It does work on my computer at work, though.
That's probably unrelated, but you never know.  It appears the Time Machine problem is between your Mac and the Time Capsule, not between Cox and the TC.

  • Transferring LR catalog to backup hard drive for travel?

I plan on taking a photo vacation and want to take along a laptop with Lightroom for processing on the road.
I currently use and process my images on my desktop. LR and the images are all on desktop.
What is the best way to transfer my catalog  (with all keyword and collection data) to my backup hard drive for the trip?
Images are not really a problem transferring just takes time.
Do I use the "backup" mode in LR? or, drag and drop the LR folders from my desktop to my backup hard drive?
    thanks,

    Please note:
When we talk of the "catalog" in Lightroom, it means the database where Lr stores everything. It does not mean your photos.
The catalog (i.e. the database, i.e. the file with the ending <  .lrcat>) does not have to be on the same drive where the photos(the image files)  are.
So you can move your photos to an external hard drive and leave the catalog where it is now. Where is it? Go >Edit >Catalog Settings ? General tab. It tells you the name and location of the catalog.
Before you do any moving of your photos, please note: Lr stores - among the many other things - in its catalog also the location of each one of your image files. This has the consequence that if you move the image files in Win Explorer / Mac Finder Lr does not find the photos in the location stored in the catalog and sends you the much feared "?". How to solve this, see here: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/lightroom/using/WS3BC0B0A1-D48C-4271-891D-DA04EF388E29.html
So, there are two ways to move your photos to an external drive:
    a) do it within Lr and Lr will keep on top of the moved files;
    b) If you want to move the image files in Win Explorer / Mac Finder it is best you create one (1) parent folder that contains - in various sub-folders - all of your images. Do this in Lr.
Then - in Win Explorer / Mac Finder - you move the parent folder with all its sub-folders to the external drive. When you open Lr again it will show - in the folders panel - a question mark besides each folder. You then have to do the <Find missing folder> routine:
    Locate missing folders
If a folder is moved in the operating system instead of in Lightroom, the link between the catalog and the folder breaks, and a question-mark icon appears on the folder in the Folders panel.
To restore the link, right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Mac OS) on the folder and choose Find Missing Folder from the context menu.
Navigate to the file path of the moved folder and click Choose.

  • "Setup was unable create a new system partition" error installing Win7

Hi, I've just purchased aSanDisk Extreme 120Gb SSD (model SDSSDX-120G-G25), and when attempting to install Windows 7 I get a error "Setup was unable create a new system partition or locate an existing partition" when selecting the partition to install to. I've already tried various DISKPART commands to clean the drive, create the partition, format to NTFS and make it active, but to no avail. I've also made sure no other drives are connected except the DVD drive for my Windows disc. I'm using a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3 motherboard, plugged into one of the ICH9R Southbridge SATA ports, and I've switched AHCI mode on already. Anybody have any ideas before I send the drive back? Thanks

In such a situation, you can clean the entire SSD using diskpart and this will ensure that the boot sector and system reserved partition is also cleaned. Try using the following method to clean the SSD and use the windows automatic partitioning to create partition for the installation of the operating system. 1. Insert the windows 7 DVD into the DVD drive.
2.On the disk selection screen, press SHIFT+F10. A Command Prompt window opens.
3.Type diskpart, and then press ENTER to open the diskpart tool.
4.Type list disk, and then press ENTER. A list of available hard disks is displayed.
5.Type sel disk number, and then press ENTER. number is the number of the hard disk that you want to clean. The hard disk is now selected.
6.Type det disk, and then press ENTER. A list of partitions on the hard disk is displayed. Use this information to verify that the correct disk is selected.
7.Make sure that the disk does not contain required data, type clean all, and then press ENTER to clean the disk. All the partitions and all the data on the disk is permanently removed.
8.Type exit, and then press ENTER to close9. Continue istallation of Windows OS by using automatic partitioning scheme rather than creating partitions yourself. This worked for me in a similar situation. Hope will work for you as well. Best of Luck:-)

  • Unable to backup LR catalog

For some reason I am no longer able to backup my LR catalog. I have folders in two separate external hard drives but when I attempt backup I get a message:  "Lightroom was unable to backup the catalog named Lightroom 4 Catalog. Please check folder permissions...." Could it be that the catalog has become too large as I have well over 200,000 images in it? I don't understand what "folder permissions" I need to check.

The most likely reason in my opinion is that you ran out of space on the drive where you do your catalog backups.
As you probably know, Lr writes a new backup file every time you do a backup; so with a catalog of 200,000 images that will - over time - add up to considerable space requirements.
In your OS (Mac Finder / Win Explorer) have a look at the drive where the backups are. Most likely you will se a whole list of backups. Delete the older ones (I usually delete everything older than a month because I don't see any use for older backups - but your requirements may be different) to create more space and try the backup again.
