Unable to backup iPod (greyed out option)

I have my iTunes library set up to run from an external HD. At the moment the backup option on File > Devices is greyed out. I've found various solutions that suggest that that backups have been disabled on preferences and it should just be a matter of changing a setting in the run box (http://www.techimperial.com/how-to/disable-itunes-backup-sync/). However, despite doing this, and checking that this is correct in the .xml file, I am still unable to backup my iPod. It doesn't offer the option when I sync it, or try through File > Devices (and there's no options on the iPod summary screen either).
I've also tried the following: updated the iPod software, made sure I'm running the latest version of iTunes (11.3).
Could it be because I'm running iTunes from a library on my external HD? Any suggestions to fix this? I really don't want to have to resort to using the cloud.

That backup feature only applies to iOS devices, iPhone, iPod touch, & iPad. All of the content that goes onto to your iPod nano should already be in your library.

Trying to restore ipod from one that died. But restore from backup is greyed out in the itunes menu.

I have latest version of itunes on Mavericks, a brand new ipod nano, and I am trying to restore my old dead ipod from its last backup onto the new ipod. The previous (dead) ipod was inherited from my daughter and is called "Kim's ipod" and I didn't get the option to initialise with the same name when I first connected it to itunes. I suspect that might be the problem.
Restoring from backup is greyed out in the file menu.
This strikes me as a situation that shouldn't be too uncommon - I'm wondering what I am missing.

- Or, how to reinitialise the ipod so that the new one can have the same name as the old one in order to back it up.

Hmm. I came to realise iTune Match had downgraded 38 of my tracks, which I'd ripped from my own CDs long ago, with 256kbps versions. I do have backup for the tracks, so I'd like to delete these 38 tracks (I've made a Smart playlist of them), deleting them from iCloud too; then with Match turned off, recover my originals (Add to Library) from an old Mac.
Can't do it! As Richard Tench said at the top, from 27 July 2011, Edit > Delete is permanently grayed out if you have opted for iT Match. And for me on iTunes 10.6.3 (Lion 10.7.4), that's not all: Edit > Cut and Cmd-x both just produce the Bonk sound. My Macbook keyboard has no Del key either.
But all the above are only true with Match active. Store > Turn Off iTunes Match will ungrey Edit > Delete (& fn-bksp etc I imagine). So I would then be able to delete the tracks locally. But of course, if you turn off iT Match you can delete all you like locally, but they will still exist in iCloud, and if I turn on iT Match again, the lower-grade 256kbps ones will come down from the clouds to replace my CD-ripped ones again! Won't they?
Is that right? Is there any way to exclude these 38 tracks (out of ~6500) from iTunes Match so I can keep my better quality CD-ripped ones? (Other than using Alt-Launch & creating a separate iTunes fileset for the 38 tracks - as you might have guessed, some of them fall right in the middle of albums.) Help!

Both my Wifi and my iCloud backup are greyed out.

My wifi and iCloud backup are greyed out on my Iphone 4S and i can't switch them on. I have erased all content and then restored it but it doesn't work. What should I do to fix it?

If the wi-fi remains greyed out, your device needs service.
If within warranty, it should be free.
If not, it will probably cost $199 USD + tax.

Greyed out options on Apple loops on GarageBand ipod 5

i have some greyed out catagories for Apple loops in GarageBand, and I see that i can get some additional stuff free under in app purchases in the App Store, though I have no idea to get to it. How can I get the other loops?

I had a similar problem with songs greyed out and not syncing and apps not syncing either. I also tried multiple restarts and redownloading iOS5 etc. The one thing which seems to have sorted it out for me is buying a (free) app from the app store on my iphone and then syncing with itunes. Oddly enough this seems to have woken itunes up to the fact that stuff wasn't synced and started the process of a full sync.
A bit random and i read this on another thread, but it worked for me.

Greyed out options on itunes "devices"

I have an ipod classic 5th or 6th gen and when i go to File\devices within itunes everything is greyed out apart from "transfer purchase from my ipod".
I have tried contacting Apple support who gave me a couple of options one of which was to buy help from them or they would send a link to me. I opted for the link which was absolutely useless and like looking for a needle in a hay stack.

Songs wont sync to ipod (greyed out with circle)

Bought song on iTunes store downloads and plays in iTunes but wont sync to my ipod? Apparently this is an issue cause its happened to me a lot lately. This shouldn't happen but there is a quick fix without downloading anything or resetting anything that I have figured out. First delete all greyed out songs from any playlists then go to song In iTunes delete the song or whole album and choose the MOVE TO RECYCLE option. Next go to recycle bin and highlight all songs and or albums choose RESTORE. Now go to iTunes choose ADD FOLDER TO LIBRARY then add the folder or file back to iTunes it should now sync perfectly. I think there are other ways but this to me is the easiest as of now I don't really understand why its necessary for only some songs. Hopefully someone from iTunes or apple or whatever can figure it out. Hope this helps.

Why greyed out options in iTunes radio, and other behavior

iOS 7.1.2 on a 4S.
In the past couple of days, when accessing the 'star' menu on the lower left hand side, the "play more like this" and "never play this again" are greyed out. Naturally, I can certainly "add to my wish list", because that will eventually cost money. Problem is, I need the other two options far worse than the only one it'll let me have. Especially the "never play this again" option.
Nothing precipitated this, it just started happening.
As well, iTunes radio has now started quitting randomly. Today, it would only get maybe 30-45 seconds into a song, then default to silence and sit there as if I'd only just opened up iTunes.
I've also noticed that using iTR on my laptop or iMac, I don't even get the options, just "add to wish list".
If anyone has a clue as to WTH is going on, I'd really appreciate it.

I've also noticed that some stations will operate normally, while others have this issue. At present, I only have two stations; one of them works and the other doesn't.

Help with "greyed out" option for Publishing a group of Parameters in Motion 5!

How do you group published parameters in Motion 5, so that you don't have one giant list of published options for Final Cut Pro X?
My main goal is To publish a compound parameter (a parameter with nested subparameters)
Looking through Motion Help, it should be as easy as clicking the little disclosure triangle on the right of the inspector, but the word "Publish" is greyed out...

I know I've looked at rigging, but based off the Motion Help Online Manual, It should be as simple as clicking on the option for publish and have nested subparameters...
Rigging is excellent, but more steps would be needed to do the same thing i believe...

Why is the delete on my Ipod greyed out when I try to delete files on the ipod

When I try to delete files from my IPod the 'Delete' button is greyed out. I swear I have mamge files but I do have Start iTunes when plugged ii. What settings should I have in order to be able to delete files on my IPod? Thanks

With the iPod connected to the syncing computer, go to the Music pane for the iPod in iTunes and unckeck the songs you want deleted from your iPod and then sync. The following givesyou some information about syncing.

Can't publish - greyed out options

Trying to explore publishing an iCalender for the first time but all my options for publishing are greyed out.
What am I missing out here?
Surely it must be something obvious that i'm overlooking.

I'm frustrated too! I created a group and dragged the calendars into the group, then published the group ---
but now everything is the same color!
Did u ever figure this out??? Would lvoe to know how to get it to 'differentiate' like u said - by maintaining the color coding convention once published on html.

VPC Loses my pcs TWICE! Why? Unable to "migrate" pc (greyed out) How to?

Using VPC 7.02. Installed WIN 2000 and crashed once for reasons unknown. Reinstalled WIN 2k and somehow the PC disappeared from the VPC list! (after running well for about 1 month.) Only thing I can think was that it may have happened when booting from the install disc while trying to verify a new internal hard drive.
So I reinstalled WIN 2K however I am unable to mirate th old pc using the migate data tool. I do see a "Windows 2000" in the user>documents>Virtual PC list>Windows 2000, but it is greyed out. How do I recover it?

Unable to open folder - greyed out?

I seem unable to open a folder that I copied over from my Windows machine. The look of it is slightly greyed out, as if the folder were being copied still, but I know that it is not.
Does anyone have any idea of why this might be and what I can do to fix it?
I was able to open it just fine on my windows machine, but now am unable to open it in snow leopard.

no error message, no nothing. just nothing happens. its quite odd.
I found a work around though, albeit a bit of an odd one...for anyone reading this that has the same problem - I made an "alias" of the folder in question, then was able to load the folder by loading the alias (only once though, wouldn't load a 2nd time), then copy all the info from the folder into a new folder.
voila you have access to the folder now.
an odd way to do it, but I couldn't find any other way of getting access.
edit: seems it might have been due to copying a write-protected file over from Windows XP

Sign Document is greyed out, option not available

I am trying to sign a form I have filled out digitally, all fields are open including signature block but the Sign Document under tools is greyed out. the form's title includes "(SECURED)" after .pdf. is there a security setting I need to remove? The fields in the signature area are not digital signature fields, but rather are normal text fields, so it's intended for you to type your name. If the form did have digital signature fields you would be able to sign them. The type of security that they've applied does not permit you to create new digital signature fields, which is why Sign Document is greyed-out.

My iPod greys out all of the music on my iPod except the music that is on my iTunes library on my laptop! 4000 songs can't be played anymore!! :(

I just tried to add some music from my sister's iPod into mine and had to update my iTunes because it wouldn't read my iPod unless I did. I just don't know what to do cuz at first all my music was grey after I did this last night. Then I tried to follow the advice on the thread but my iPod is checked with the Manually Manage Music and Videos and I don't know it just doesn't seem to work. Then I clicked the "Restore Backup" and it restored only a portion of my songs- just the one that was on my laptop but none of the music my friend had originally added when he gave me the iPod for Christmas. I'm just so frustrated cuz over 4000+ songs can't be played.
I also tried to go to "On this iPod" to see if the music on my iPod was able to be played on my laptop, but the minutes I clicked out on the songs that were grey on my iPod the music gets this explanation point next to it and doesn't play! WTH!!!
This has never happened before. It always used to be so easy to transfer music to my iPod and now I have this mess in my hands!
Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

The iPod backup that iTunes makes does not inlcuded synced media like apps and music. Thes those iTunes are not restored to the iPod unless they are in the iTunes library.
Try:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Unsync all music and resync
- Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.

IPod greyed out when in iTunes

Hello,
I have been searching forums for the past two days and I can't find any information on this matter, or maybe I have and I just don't understand.
I currently have an iPod Classic 80GB that I have music on (obviously). I have it synced to my iMac, which I use at home. It's great because it loads new music I put in and makes my life one concept less stressful, sort of. I used to do manual all the time because I didn't like the idea of having something "automatically" do something for me. But, with the new idea to start utilizing iTunes and rating every single song and desiring to keep a recorded play count, I read that syncing made this easy, especially listening on another computer.
From what I understand, my iPod is the processing unit that actually keeps record of the play count and ratings, etc... iTunes is just the application that makes all that technical jargon simplified for the human. So in theory I should be able to do what I want in iTunes.
To cut to the chase, I have my iPod Classic synced to my computer. When I take my iPod to work and listen to music all day, I am able to come back home and sync it again and the iPod Play Count that was raised listening to music all day in the office is synced to my iMac iTunes at home and it's great. Earlier this week I was able to view my iPod on the MAC at my work in iTunes and view by Artist, Genre, Song, Play Count, etc... at my pleasure, whatever I decided. The past few days I haven't been able to do this and it's stuck on Play Count, which is quite frustrating. I can't view by artist, song, genre, etc... and the only thing I can do is add a rating. No playlist creating on the laptop or anything. Of course when I come home it's perfect because it's synced to this computer.
Do I have to manually manage the iPod on the laptop that isn't synced?
Any help would be great.

Solved the problem. I came into work this morning and plugged in the iPod to my laptop that the iPod isn't "synced" to. I went to the iPod and checked the box "manually manage music and videos". This allowed me to sort the iPod anyway I wish and I am able to drag songs into playlists. Hopefully this functions when I go home to the computer it is synced to.
