trying to reboot...in BOOTCAMP CTRL PANEL (bootcamp 3.2)
I've been noticing that Boot Camp 3 is a bit more finicky when rebooting back to OSX. I'm suspecting that the desired partition is not set correctly in the PRAM/NVRAM, so the Mac is looking for a non-existent partition to boot from. Nothing that happens consistently for me; happens maybe one out of every 40-50 reboots.
The workaround is instead of using the control panel in Windows to reboot to OSX, just shut down Windows as normal, then start the Mac holding down the Option key. OSX's Startup Disk System Preference seems to set the startup disk correctly, but Boot Camp's seems to have issues. Once I stopped using the control panel in Windows to reboot, I haven't had the hanging reboot issue so far. YMMV, but something to try that's different than what you're doing now.
...i'm getting stuck at bootcamp ctrl panel > choose which os to restart to, > i select macosx in the ctrl panel, after i click yes to restart it freezes after 20 secs and it stays that way for more than 10 mins, so i hard shutdown(holding down power button)
If my suspicion is correct and the contents of the PRAM/NVRAM are corrupt (i.e.: Boot Camp Control Panel not setting startup disk correctly,) you should to [reset the PRAM|http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379].

I have a Mac Pro with four hard drives. I currently have Lion installed on one hard drive. I want to have the option to boot from either Lion or Snow Leopard. How can I do this?

It's best to install Snow Leopard on one of the three remain drives without an Operating System.
You can then install the applications you need from the original media. Create a User Account using Setup Assistant.
Do you want to migrate User Accounts from the OSX LIon boot drive, or are you keeping the User Accounts separate?
Dual-booting just requires holding the option key during startup and selecting either Lion or Snow Leopard.

  • Possible to Boot from External Drive with Snow Leopard??

I have a new iMac that came with Mountain Lion installed.  My previous Mac had Snow Leopard.  I kept that OS drive with all my applications.  I've already transferred 99.9% of my stuff from the old Mac to the new one and everything is working fine BUT....
There is one little thing from one of my apps that I need and to get it I need to launch that app from the previous install (on the old Mac).  Since I have that old system drive, is it possible connect it via USB and boot from it?  I've been trying but haven't had any luck
    Can anyone help out?

If the app in question was written strictly for the PowerPC you would need to boot from the Snow Leopard volume as you suggest. Generally speaking you can't run an OS X version that predated the one installed on your Mac when it was built, but there is no harm in trying to boot that OS X version installed on a separate partition.
You may be able to run the app with that HD mounted and available to your iMac as long as it is not strictly for the PowerPC.
I've been trying but haven't had any luck
What have you tried so far?

    Hi PPl,
It happened second time in a row. Though the root disk is mirrored, server is unable to boot from alternate disk (mirror disk)

    1)      Remove the faulty disk physically and boot
    (or)
    2)      Replace the faulty disk and boot it
Any way, I can disable the faulty disk in BIOS (or) booting from cd-rom and do something to avoid it?

You can't boot from systems earlier than that shipped with the computer. For example, early 2008 Mac Pros come with 10.5.1 and can't boot 10.5
Also you can't boot with a DVD that was shipped with a different model Mac.

I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a machine supposedly limited to 4 GB.

  • UCS Unable to boot from SAN

I have some blades that I'm unable to boot from SAN.  The weird thing is I can see the LUN's and I can install ESXi 5.5 fine.  It's up until I reboot and the blades just boot to the BIOS because they don't see any disk.  When I try to change boot order, the only thing I can boot to is UEFI.

When you see your lun, and can install ESXi, it means, that
    - your zoning is correct
    - your lun masking / mapping is correct
If boot fails, your boot policy is the problem ! are you sure, that the target pwwn points to the controller of the disksubsystem, that the lun nr. is correct ? we seen all kind of weird things, like cable crossed,.....

  • I'm thinking of upgrading from 10.6.8 Snow Leopard to OS X Yosemite. Does anyone know of any problems associated with this? What are the implications / consequences of installing Yosemite? Does it effect functionality of v10.6.8 software or hardware?

I'm thinking of upgrading from v10.6.8 Snow Leopard to OS X Yosemite. I know, I'm years behind, but it has become a necessity. My Mac is becoming slow and is incompatible with many softwares and websites. Does anyone know of any problems associated with this upgrade? What are the implications and/or consequences of installing Yosemite? Does it effect functionality of v10.6.8 software or hardware? Are there any precautions I should take before the installation? I have read some posts about Macs slowing right down after installing Yosemite. Any insights and information (in layman's terms please!) would be very useful. Thanks.

Huge thanks for your response Michel. I apologise for the delay in getting back to you. I have done as you suggested, the details are pasted below. Clearly there are some applications I need to remove and no doubt my HD could do with a 'spring clean'. My Mac 'Safe Booted' when I turned it on this morning.
I use many different softwares, some web-based. The decision to upgrade to OSX Yosemite is because I was unable to attend a Webinar this week using GoToMeeting downloadable software. GoToMeeting have upgraded their system and my OS is no longer supported. Other websites like VImeo no longer support my version of Safari. I tend to use Chrome if Safari isn't compatible.
    Problem description:
I'm thinking of upgrading from v10.6.8 Snow Leopard to OS X Yosemite. However I have noticed that my MacBook Pro becoming ‘slow’ over the last 3 weeks and therefore might have some issues that need to be resolved before I even consider installing OSX Yosemite. Over the last week my Mac has Safe Booted on three occasions, so clearly there’s a ‘glitch’ occurring.

  • I have Windows XP Pro as my Bootcamp option under Snow Leopard. If I upgrade to Lion will I still be able to use this Bootcamp Windows XP operating system as I dont have Windows 7 yet

I have Windows XP Pro as my Bootcamp option under Snow Leopard which works very well indeed.
I would like to upgrade to Lion but am concerned re its lack of support for Bootcamp Windows XP
Can I upgrade to Lion and boot into my old Windows XP BootCamp partition as I do at present OR
must I buy Windows v7 and install under the new Bootcamp system.
Also what happens to my Snow Leopard Time Machines backups - can I see them under Lion?
    Many thanks

  • SAPRFC / PHP 5.3.0 / MacOSX Snow Leopard

<pre>(seems message parsing is not working..) Hello gurus !
I've read with a great interrest almost all posts on this forum, and I must say it helped me a lot sorting
out a nearly functional solution for installing SAPRFC PHP extension on a MacOSX Snow Leopard system.
It seems i'm just having a problem with the RFCSDK from SAP not being of the appropriate architecture.
Let me describe my installation process (maybe it can help other people willing to install SAPRFC on
    Macintosh plateform equally !)
    1. Installation of Macintosh developpement tools (Xcode)
First step was to install XCode Package, from http://developer.apple.com/tools/xcode/ it's a 650Mb
disk-image, that once installed is 2.5Gb on harddrive. This provided me with all php headers that I
    needed for the next steps.
I made sure my Apache/PHP was functionnal on the Macintosh, this page helped me :
    http://www.mac4ever.com/articles/creation/1153/php_mysql_sous_snow_leopard_et_xdebug_eclipse/ (it's in french)
    2. Download of RFCSDK from SAP
I was not totally sure which version to install on my system since no "MacOsX version", so I picked
the "Linux on x86_64 64bit" package.
    3. Extracting files from the SAR archive
As the binary of SAPCAR was not willing to execute properly, I downloaded a Windows version and
extracted my files on a Windows system.
    4. Installing RFCSDK files on the system
    I created a folder "sap" in folder "/usr" :
    $> sudo mkdir /usr/sap
I created a folder "rfcsdk" in folder "/usr/sap"
    $> sudo mkdir /usr/sap/rfcsdk
I copied all files i extracted from the SAR archive into the "/usr/sap/rfcsdk folder" :
    $> sudo cp -R ~/Desktop/Linux\ on\ x86_64\ 64bit/ /usr/sap/rfcsdk/*
After this in "/usr/sap/rfcsdk" i have now : 4 folders : bin, include, lib and text
I changed access rights for all the files in sap directory:
    $> sudo chmod -R 755 /usr/sap
    5. Compiling SAPRFC extension for PHP
    I downloaded SAPRFC 1.4.1 from http://saprfc.sourceforge.net/
    I created a folder module under "/usr/sap" :
    $> sudo mkdir "/usr/sap/module"
I unpacked the files from the saprfc-1.4.1.tar.gz archive into "/usr/sap/module/"
I ran phpize while in folder "/usr/sap/module/"
    $> cd /usr/sap/module
    $> sudo phpize
    Configuring for:
    PHP Api Version:         20090626
    Zend Module Api No:      20090626
    Zend Extension Api No:   220090626
(I made sure the phpize which was called was the one corresponding to the php version i was
running with apache, "locate phpize" helped me to sort out if there was serveral phpize that could
    potentially be executed)
I ran then the configuration script
    $> sudo ./configure
checking for grep that handles long lines and -e... /usr/bin/grep
    checking for egrep... /usr/bin/grep -E
checking for a sed that does not truncate output... /usr/bin/sed
    checking for cc... cc
checking how to hardcode library paths into programs... immediate
checking whether stripping libraries is possible... yes
checking if libtool supports shared libraries... yes
checking whether to build shared libraries... yes

    creating libtool
appending configuration tag "CXX" to libtool
    configure: creating ./config.status

    config.status: config.h is unchanged

    7. Testing the installation
I restarted my apache server, and checked /var/log/apache2/error_log; at this time no
    error shows here yet.
I put the saprfc_test.php file in my Sites/ folder to test it with http://localhost// and the page
just load fine, and the php script seems to not fail on the test : if (! extension_loaded ("saprfc")),
so.. normally the extension is loaded by php.
After viewing the saprfc_test.php page, some errors appears in the /var/log/apache2/error_log :
dyld: lazy symbol binding failed: Symbol not found: _RfcGetAllLibVersions
      Referenced from: /usr/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20090626/saprfc.so

    8. Trying to find out the issue
I wanted to run LDD tool on saprfc.so to find out if the linking was correctly done with the library
"/usr/sap/rfcsdk/lib/librfccm.so" but it appears that ldd is not available on MacOSX and Apple
    recommand using "otool -L" instead.
    Here we go :
    *$> cd /usr/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20090626
    *$> otool -L saprfc.so"
    saprfc.so:
         /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib (compatibility version 1.0.0, current version 125.0.0)
Not very "verbose".. i tried the otool -l (minus L) to view any better info :
    *$> otool -l saprfc.so"
    saprfc.so:

OK this time, seems there is at least 1 mention of my RFCSDK in the last line, but .. just a path to the
lib folder, no mention to the library file it self.. i'm just a bit confused now !
Thank you for reading all this, now, maybe you if already managed to have a MacOSX SAPRFC
working or have any clue where I can find a RFCSDK library (or compilable sources) that would
just work on a Mac OSX system.. Thanks for your kind advices

    Fixed formating a bit </pre>

Hey that is one crazy message Lemmus. If you want people to respond a little human parsing and indenting maybe required.
    I have one thought.
What version on SAP are you connecting to? If it is ECC6 or a netweaver system I would get hold of the sapnwrfc library. (Google is your friend)
It is designed to work with the new netweaver rfc interface.
    Cheers,
    Nigel

  • Just installed windows 7 on my macbook (os x snow leopard) using bootcamp.  I can't get back to my mac now.  I've tried logging off of windows and shutting it down.  when i restart it comes back on in windows.  How do I get back to my os x?

Just installed windows 7 on my macbook (Mac OS X Snow Leopard) using bootcamp.  Windows 7 works great, but I can't get back to my Snow Leopard.  When I log off or shut down Windows and try to start up again, all I get is Windows.  How do I get back to my mac operating system?

If your Mac is off then start up. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the Option key until the Mac and Windows Disks show up. Then click on the Mac disk and the arrow below it. After it boots up in Mac then go to System Preferences>Startup Disk and select your Mac partition as the Startup disk.
If you are in Windows then look for the Boot Camp icon on the taskbar. It will look like a gray box sitting on one corner. One of the options when you click it is to restart in Mac OS. After it boots up in Mac then go to System Preferences>Startup Disk and select your Mac partition as the Startup disk.

  • I recently updated? to Lion from 10.6.8(snow leopard), and things seem to be running slower.  Has anyone had similar problems?  I have Feb 2011 Macbook pro 13" 2.3 Ghz.

As Shootist pointed out, the system uses more power.
However, initially it will reindex the hard drive for spotlight, which will slow things down temporarily.
It also must rebuild caches that eventually will speed things up.
If it has completed indexing the hard drive (no dot pulsing in the spyglass), then there might be something wrong.
Start by booting into the Recovery HD (a partition created with Lion that has Disk Utility and reinstallation options) by holding down cmd-r when you restart. You can let go when the gray screen appears.
When it boots, select Disk Utility and Repair the drive.
If that doesn't speed things up, try re-installing the OS from the same Recovery HD. It won't delete any of your files, but it has helped some people whose Macs ran slow after installing Lion.
Also, how much memory do you have? Lion needs RAM so maxing your Mac out might also help.

  • How do I switch from Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard?  New used computer that I don't have anything on yet but has Mountain Lion installed.

I just puchased a used 2008 MacPro 2.8 ghz 8 core and it has Mountain Lion installed on it.  I want to go back to Snow Leopard because it is a better stable OS for using Final Cut Pro 7.  I just bought the Snow Leopard Discs to install.  I need to erase the hard drive and install Snow Leopard.  Any help on how
    to do this?  Thank you.

Downgrade Lion/Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard
      1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer
loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the
          Utilities menu.
      2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status
of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then
the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART
info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on
the Partition tab in the DU main window.
      3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions
from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS
Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on
the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups made while on Snow Leopard, then you may do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion/Mountain Lion files.

  • HT1277 Mail has gone crazy. Header's and messages are mixed up. New Mac Book Pro. Migrated files from Time machine running snow leopard. Reinstall or new computer needed?

Mail has gone crazy. Header's and messages are mixed up. New Mac Book Pro. Migrated files from Time machine running snow leopard. Reinstall or new computer needed?

Ok; I'm not sure what you're doing.    36 hours is rather long.  Seems like a new migration.  Not what I intended.
Here's what I intended: from the newly-migrated and apparently-corrupt environment, create a new user, not related to any existing user, nor any migration-created user, or any other user for that matter.  That is, use  > System Preferences > Users and Groups, authenticate yourself by clicking on the padlock, and then click the + and create a wholly new user.  Then log in under that user and establish the mail access.
36 hours?  I'm wondering if there's an error or an exceedingly slow network here?  Or a really, really slow disk?  Or a sick backup?  (WiFi isn't the path I'd usually choose, either.)
Failing the attempted second migration, I'd try a different tactic.  Does your existing (old) system work?   If so, I'd bypass the backup and connect an external (scratch) USB disk drive to the (old) sstem and then boot and use Disk Utility booted from the installer DVD disk or boot and use Disk Utility from the recovery partition or booted from a recovery partition created on some other external storage (details here vary by the OS X version and what hardware you have), and perform a full-disk backup of your original internal disk to (scratch) external storage.  (Make sure you get the source and target disks chosen correctly here; copying the wrong way — from the scratch disk to your existing disk — will clobber your data!)  In esssence, this will clone your existing boot disk.  Then dismount the (formerly-scratch) external disk, transfer it over to the new system, and use it as the source of the migration, by performing a fresh OS X installation on the new system.
Target Disk Mode is also sometimes an option for accessing the disk for a migration, but that requires the right cable, and requires systems that have the same external connection; newer MacBook Pro systems use Thunderbolt for this, and older systems tend to use FireWire.  And I'm guessing you don't have compatible hardware.
The details here can and do vary by your OS X versions and your particular Mac systems — if you'll identify the specific models and hardware, somebody might be able to better tailor the above (fairly generic) sequence to your particular configuration.

  • Cannot access safe boot for Mac Air running Snow Leopard any suggestion please?

Mac Air - Mid 2011 (79gig free space). Running Snow Leopard 10.6 + all updates installed to-date. Last update was iTunes 98m file which was installed 4 days ago.
Unit has progressively slowed up, starting with intermittent freezing of cursor, which appears to have started not long after connecting iPhone 5 running current iOS.
Have accessed Safe Boot and ran drive utility check, all ok.
Received error message after drive check stating, "(AppleUsbEthernetHost.text) incorrectly installed".
Have subsequently tried accessing Safe Boot again to try and reset permissions, but can not access as unit constantly freezes at Login page.
Have followed Apple support recommendations to access Safe Boot, but to no avail.
Have seen forum references to the above error relating to iOS mobile devices causing problems with earlier versions of iTunes updates.
Any suggestions as to how to proceed from here would be appreciated ?
    Ivy

I suggest you backup your files, if possible, then do the following:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Reinstall your third-party software from the original media. Restore your data from the backup.
