Unable to boot from ODD or USB after windows 8.1 update on P850-31L

Hi
I just updated a P850-31L to windows 8.1 from windows 8 through the windows store.
Before the update I was able to boot from a USB drive by pressing F12 during start up.
After the update I was no longer able to boot from the USB drive. Selecting the USB drive by changing the boot order in BIOS setup via F2 or by pressing F12 no longer works.
Booting from ODD is also no longer possible.
The BIOS version is 6.70 and does not allow secure boot to be disabled. However the DVD and the USB stick I tried are signed Ubuntu 12.10 which worked prior to the upgrade. Fastboot in windows 8.1 is disabled.
This would then appear to be a bug in the Toshiba BIOS? Or has the windows 8.1 updated the BIOS or the EFI boot partition in such a way as to override the BIOS setting? Really stuck here, doesn't seem to be much information about.
Any thoughts or assistance would be very much appreciated!
Thanks
Michael
Update: I just tried booting from the Toshiba windows 8 recovery DVD and this no longer works either.

OK I fixed this.
Firstly it's worth noting that it is possible to to disable secure boot in the 6.70 BIOS.
However this option is only available when the user password is not set in the security menu.
After enabling or disabling the password a reboot is required to make the secure boot enable/disable option either available or unavailable.
That's good I suppose as I guess it may prevent secure boot from being disabled when the machine is running. However this does not appear to have been related to this issue.
I selected the 'reset to factory defaults' option on the exit menu.
The machine was then able to boot from USB and DVD. The boot order was also respected.
Perhaps the windows 8.1 upgrade somehow invisibly corrupted the BIOS settings. Or maybe it was just a stranage co-incidence that the BIOS corrupted itself during the install. Either way that factory reset fixed it.

  • Unable to boot WinXP on Mac Pro after BC 2.1 Update

Saw the BootCamp 2.1 update in ASU. Clicked to install it. Rebooted machine after ASU is complete. Now my WinXP is unable to start. I've tried holding down the ALT key and selecting the disk/partition - still will not boot. It puts the monitor to sleep and just sits there.
Anyone run into the same problem and know of a workaround?
    Thanks.

  • Unable to boot mac OS X Lion after windows 7 installation using boot camp!

    Hi,
I'm first time mac user & recently bought the latest entry level mac mini model 2.3GHz 599$ (http://www.apple.com/macmini/specs.html).
The machine by default came with OS X Lion.
I was trying to install genuine windows 7 on my mac mini using boot camp. I had the windows installation CD the download part for windows support software was taking too long & I foolishly skipped this crucial part set aside 70GB for win7 & continued the installation. The windows installation was done successfully with no machine specific drivers installed yet. I thought I would get some grub like thing to select OS at boot time but everytime it boots to windows. Is it since I missed downloading/installing windows support software? Please help me out to get my mac back
I've not done much of googling to troubleshoot it but bit of nervous for my foolishness at skipping that downloading part.

That was quite dumb question, the RTFM issue
Booted from macintosh HD at startup & removed the windows installation.

  • Can't boot from my External USB since 10.5.6 Update

Hi to everyone and sorry in advance for my english.
    Here's my problem:
I have a copy of Mac OS X in my external USB drive, just for emergency. Two days ago I decided to update the OS, so i reboot my iMac and everythings gone in the right way. So the disk had no problems.
I run Software update and I downloaded a 377 MB Update (from 10.5.5 to 10.5.6). The installation was successful and the iMac reboot. After first reboot I had a second reboot and now it happend. My screen is still grey with the apple logo and the black wheel that keep rollin'. The hard disk seems to be freezed.
Someone knows if there's something i can do?? I don't wanna reinstall Mac OS.
    Thanks. Andrea.

Restart, holding down the OPTION key until the icons start showing up on the screen. When the spinning gear stops, select the internal HD, and click arrow underneath. That should boot the machine with the internal HD. From there you can run Disk Utility on the USB HD. By the way, your English is fine.

    Hi.
You simply can't. Snow Leopard is compiled in Intel binary only.
    Good Luck.

  • BOOT FROM AN EXTERNAL USB DRIVE???

I know apple has made it clear about booting from an external USB drive
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106474
but I know that there are people who are able to boot from an external drive, does anybody know how to do this?
It's just that id like to work on final cut studio on an external drive for various reasons:
1st: my powerbook's HD is small and slow (60gb)
2nd: my external usb drive is big (160 gb) and fast (7200 RMPS!)
so a little help would be apreciated
    best regards

In theory, probably. In real life Firewire 400 is much faster than USB2, not to speak of Firewire 800:

  • Though the root disk is mirrored, server is unable to boot from alternate disk (mirror disk)

    Hi PPl,
It happened second time in a row. Though the root disk is mirrored, server is unable to boot from alternate disk (mirror disk)
When the disk was found faulty, still unable to boot the OS from alternate disk, it says it still probe/look for other disk
Here are the console log when I tried to boot the OS
    sc> console
Enter #. to return to ALOM.
    WARNING: /pci@0/pci@0/pci@2/scsi@0 (mpt0):
Disconnected command timeout for Target 1
    WARNING: /pci@0/pci@0/pci@2/scsi@0 (mpt0):
Disconnected command timeout for Target 1
    WARNING: /pci@0/pci@0/pci@2/scsi@0 (mpt0):
Disconnected command timeout for Target 1
In such condition left out with only two options.
    1)      Remove the faulty disk physically and boot
    (or)
    2)      Replace the faulty disk and boot it
Any way, I can disable the faulty disk in BIOS (or) booting from cd-rom and do something to avoid it?

You can't boot from systems earlier than that shipped with the computer. For example, early 2008 Mac Pros come with 10.5.1 and can't boot 10.5
Also you can't boot with a DVD that was shipped with a different model Mac.

  • I can't boot from OS install USB drive Mac Mini Model 1176

How I can't boot from OS install USB drive, Mac Mini Model 1176

Thank you Eustace Mendis for your answer.
I rebooted the Mac Mini holding the Option key down but it doesn't work. I used an USB drive with O.s 10.7 from Apple that I have used previuosly with other computers and I also tried with a CD install O.S 10.6
It seems that the Mac Mini can't recognize the keyboard inputs and I tried with 3 different keyboards but still didn't work.
I also reset the SMC and PRAM but I had no luck. Any clues?

  • UCS Unable to boot from SAN

I have some blades that I'm unable to boot from SAN.  The weird thing is I can see the LUN's and I can install ESXi 5.5 fine.  It's up until I reboot and the blades just boot to the BIOS because they don't see any disk.  When I try to change boot order, the only thing I can boot to is UEFI.

When you see your lun, and can install ESXi, it means, that
    - your zoning is correct
    - your lun masking / mapping is correct
If boot fails, your boot policy is the problem ! are you sure, that the target pwwn points to the controller of the disksubsystem, that the lun nr. is correct ? we seen all kind of weird things, like cable crossed,.....

  • Why won't my 2011 MBP boot from bus-powered USB devices?

In the past, I have often made use of OS X's ability to boot from an external USB device. Before installing major OS updates, or new productivity software, I usually clone my system drive onto an external USB drive using Superduper or CarbonCopyCloner. Once the clone is complete, I can then boot from the external drive (by holding Option at startup, and choosing the cloned image from the boot disk menu). This has been incedibly useful in the past when I've had hard disk problems, or when I've upgraded to a new Mac.
My issue is with my new 2011 model 17" MBP. I am only able to boot from an external USB drive if the drive isn't bus-powered. If I try to boot from an OS X image located on a bus-powered USB flash drive or pocket hard drive, the drive seems to power down upon choosing it from the boot menu and I'm greeted by a blank gray screen. I've also tested this technique using a bus-powered DVD drive containing the Snow Leopard retail DVD (and a Windows 7 install DVD for what it's worth) and the problem remains. The optical drive will spin up upon startup, but power down as soon as I choose to boot from the DVD.
This issue only seems to affect my 2011 MBP. I've had no issues getting the same technique to work on my old 2007 MBP or a 2008 model MacBook.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Fair enough.  I'll give that a try as a last resort.
I used my wife's MacBook Pro, Target Disk Mode and a Firewire 800 cable to install Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro as I don't have an internal optical drive any more--just the standard HD and the SSD.
I did use the retail disc, and I'm wondering if the issue might be that since my machine is fairly new, I might have had to use the stock install disk--which I seem to have lost.  I have the Applications DVD, but not the OS disc.
To that end, do you know of a way to get a replacement disc?  I bought my machine at the store, I wonder if they'd be willing to copy one for me...

  • Elitebook 8460p only boots from two specific USB sticks

My Elitebook 8460p boots perfectly normally from HDD but will ONLY boot from two specific USB sticks - 1. A Windows Recovery USB and 2. A Parted Magic USB stick which is a commercial partition recovery/imaging utility - it will NOT boot from ANY OTHER USB stick at all. It'll boot from a CD/DVD. What I would like to know is why it won't boot from any other bootable USB stick at all other than those two?

That is because the other usb sticks you have tried have not been made properly bootable. Check the partition type on the sticks that work. Do they have a uefi partition or are they just MBR partitions that are active? Use Windows own disk management snapin to investigate the usb sticks.

Hi, I have a HP Desktop Media Center M7370 NL. I want to install Ubuntu but it does not boot from DVD (or USB) though the boot order is CD first. It just passes the DVD and goes through to Windows 7.
