Unable to boot in safe mode or leopard disk after a failed update
I was doing an update to 10.6 last night and got an error. Now when computer starts up, I get a Finder error after I log in and will not start up. Just continue to shows the Finder error when clicking on ok. I can't copy and paste to show you the error as computer will not do anything. I tried starting up in safe mode, samething happened. I then booted from DVD and it just sits there with gray apple on screen. Ideas? No exteral anything is plugged into it either. Please help!

Is that the same DVD you used to install 10.6, or the one that came with your Mac? If so, is it scratched or dirty? Did you try to boot from it by holding down the C key at startup? Can you run the Apple Hardware Test from the Applications disc that came with your Mac?

Unable to boot into safe mode with FileVault 2 enabled
I was trying to boot into safe mode earlier to try and fix a few things. It looks like I can't and I suspect it is because of FV2.
When the system starts I press shift after the tone, but then I have to release shift and enter the password and then Lion will only boot into normal mode.
I've also tried with sudo nvram boot-args="-x" from the terminal, but while it seesm that this way Lion starts to boot into safe mode, after a while it just restarts as if something crashed etc and then again, I have to enter the password for FV and all again as in a loop, i.e. Lion won't even start this way.
So I went into the recovery mode and I could make Lion start again at least in normale mode with sudo nvram boot-args="".
Any idea of what could be preventing Lion from entering safe mode?
Thanks in advanceThe symptom may be unrelated to FileVault 2. I encountered the symptom with FileVault 2 disabled and with backward conversion (decryption) complete.
Apple reference for my bug report: 152162960. If the symptoms on your Mac compare to those on mine: progress may seem to cease during safe fsck.
Vito, as you are comfortable with the nvram command, please try the following:
sudo nvram boot-args="-v -x"
Restart the computer and note the last verbose lines that appear before you sense that progress has ceased. Then please add a note of those lines to this topic.

Can't boot in safe mode - RAID startup disk
hi ..
my macpro has a mirrored RAID as a startup disk (using HD bay 1 & 2) ... i am trying to boot into safe mode but this does not work at all, even when holding down the shift key it starts up in normal user mode.
Is there a way to do this ? is it maybe possible to boot into safe mode with a terminal command ? or any other way ?
thx for any help with this ...Hallo
This topic is quite old, but I face exactly the same issue.
My MacPro tries to boot in safe mode, but restarts and boots in normal mode afterwards.
There are messages in system.log that indicate to me that the kernel exensions on the boot helper volumes are different from the ones on the main partition:

I tried:
sudo kextcache -v 6 -f -u /
Which updates the kernel extensions on the boot helper volume,
but it does not work.
As for the firware updates, I could still install those booting from external FW disk.

Win2003 SP2 VM won't boot to safe mode
I have a Windows Server 2003 SP2 VM set up in Hyper-V on my Windows Server 2008 R2 server. The VM was created as an export from AppAssure 5 export to Hyper-V Virtual Standby. This particular server won't complete the boot but "sits"
at the Windows splash screen indefinitely (I've let it run for two hours with no change). I specifically use the work "sits" vs. "hangs" because the progress bar continues to move and the CPU usage fluctuates between 20 and 30%.
AppAssure T3 support want me to try to boot into safe mode but I'm unable to do so. I'm connecting to the VM through Hyper-V manager on my local Windows 7 PC. I have inserted the integration services disk in the vmguest and it shows that keyboard
input is being captured but it doesn't seem to recognize the F8 keystroke.
Before I try to run startup recovery from install I was hoping someone here might be able to offer insight into why I'm unable to boot to safe mode. I do have one other VM server created through the AppAssure export and I can boot normally or into
safe mode with that one.
Thanks in advance for any insight provided. Thanks for the reply. I'm currently into the 5th hour of the boot process and no joy yet. I'll let it go for a little bit longer before stopping to so I can re-enable my protection of the server.
Yesterday, I tried mounting the drive to see if any errors were being registered in the event log that might not be causing a bsod or other start up error but kept getting an error when trying to read the event logs through my win 7 pc. It said
it wanted to convert them to .evtx and I said ok then would get an error that the log was corrupt or unreadable. -
I cannot boot into safe mode
I ran onxy, all appeared ok,
I booted from installer DVD,- repaired the drive, - nothing wrong with the drive,
and repaired disk permissions, twice, as a few permissions were incorrect
The only app which automatically logs in user account is KeyCue, and has done so always, and I don't know what what it belongs to. Nothing logs in automatically in the admin account.
I intermittently have a problem with DVDs not mounting, and a safe boot fixes the problem.further to being unable to boot in safe mode-
normally when i boot in safe mode, when its starts up and reaches the login screen, above this are the words in red safe boot. As the words were missing from the login screen I had assumed that I was not in safe boot. I currently have about 94 GB of HD space. Other than this booting process appears to be normal. What prompted the safe boot was a DVD which mounted ok on insert, had unmounted when I went to eject, a restart and holding down the shift key ejected the disk, and I then tried to do the safe boot. Since I ran disk utility from the installer disk the same DVD has mounted and ejected just fine. The vanishing disk problem started 4-5 months ago, and has always been fixed by a safe boot -
Hi,
I can't get my PowerBook to boot in safe mode. I hold the shift key after the startup chime, then release it when I see the gray apple and progress spinner; but the spinner spins for a while and eventually the computer shuts off. I can boot up normally, but I'm trying to boot in safe mode to rectify a problem I have updating Office 2004. I tried zapping the PRAM, but that didn't make a difference.
Thanks,
MichaelWell, according to DiskWarrior my news isn't good: "DiskWarrior has successfully built a new directory for the disk named “Macintosh HD.” The new directory cannot replace the original directory because of a disk malfunction. A disk malfunction is a failure of or damage to any mechanical component of the disk device, or any component connected to it."
So I suppose my HD is on its way out, although it's not exhibiting much in the way of problems yet, and the S.M.A.R.T. status is still verified. And, rather interestingly, I can no longer use Disk Utility to Verify or Repair disk when I'm booted up from an external drive. I get this message:
Repairing disk failed with error Could not unmount disk
Which just seems weird, since this is the same way I'm running DiskWarrior.
I love this PowerBook but I'm not sure I want to invest the time or expense in replacing the HD in a PowerPC-based machine. I assume new apps will soon be demanding more than that chip can handle. Does this message of doom from DiskWarrior generally reliably indicate the drive is beyond repair?
Thanks, Carolyn, and to anyone who wants to chime in.

Hi,
I have a grey screen and grey rotating wheel startup probs. I have tried repairing with the disk utility, resetting PRAM, booting in safe mode (which gave a subset of the errors that 'disk repair' did- namely- 'invalid sibling link, invalid record count, invalid node structure, invalid key length) and finally trying to get to archive&install the o/s, but it cannot find the destination volume. Is an erase the only option? PS I have backed up most files individually, but my daughter did not back up any from her user account. Any help would be appreciated. It's a MBP mid 2010. Last year it had some problems and an Apple authorised shop changed the HD and upgraded the OS from Snow Leopard to Lion. After that it seemed fine. Recently it started getting very slow and apps (e.g. Chrome, Flash) would crash. At some point it seemed stuck so I gave it a hard shutdown - bad idea. After that it would only boot in Safe Mode. I ran repar disk and repair permissions from the Disk Utility and it booted normally again but extremely slow. I upgraded to OS X 10.8.2, but didn't solve it. I tried booting with Command D to have a hardware diagnostic - it wouldn't boot and now it only boots in Safe Mode.
All data is backed and I have an external HD (but not an OS X Disc). Ready to anything. Help please!

Also you can perform #1 and #2 as these occur before Safe Mode, so you just reboot again with Shift key if you need to enter Safe Mode again.
At this point it sounds like your hard drive is dying or some sort of other hardware issue which I can only advise this.
Try to install OS X on a external drive and boot from it, if it's fine then you know your internal boot drive is dying.
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
You can replace your internal drive yourself.
OtherWorld Computing is pretty good about providing drives and tool kits to perform that function yourself.

MacBook Pro (Mid 2010) will only boot in safe mode.
I've been unable to boot my MacBook Pro normally. It will boot in safe mode, and, until today, I was able to get a normal startup after resetting both PRAM and SMC. Running "Repair Disk" on the startup disk did not reveal any problems. I have also done a recovery boot to reinstall OS (10.9.1), which did not help either, though I did not wipe the hard disc first (I did back it up).
Had to take it to Apple back in January when the screen started acting funny, i.e. getting static-y and going blank for seconds at a time but then coming back. Their tests showed that there were no hardware problems, and the screen issue was eventually resolved by doing a PRAM reset. About 14 months ago, I had the logic board replaced.
Also, I'm not sure if this is related, but when I have been able to boot normally, if I quit Google Chrome, the machine will freeze completely.

Any ideas are much appreciated!First try doing a Software Update.
Then restart and see if that works.
If not then I would update Java.
Restart and see if that works.
If not then delete the following plist items.
[invalid] com.oracle.java.Helper-Tool.plist
[invalid] com.oracle.java.Java-Updater.plist
Should find these in:
/Macintosh HD/Library/LaunchAgents
/Macintosh HD/Library/LaunchDaemons
Now restart & see if that works.
If that doesn't work try deleting everything in:
/Macintosh HD/Library/StartupItems
Hope this helps. -
Booted in Safe Mode now Mail and Safari crash when I try to open them

You restored already and sometimes just rebooting the iPad helps with what you were experiencing. I don't if it will do any good now, but you might as well give it a try.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
If you downloaded the latest version of iTunes, perhaps the download or installation of the software was corrupt. You could try deleting iTunes and reinstall it. What OS are you - Windows or Mac OS X?
I don't think that this will work, but try it anyway... Try downloading another app - any free app will be fine. -
Macbook Pro boots to a blue screen. Only boots in safe mode
Hi, I am a long time reader, first time poster.
OK so I just go a new Macbook Pro 13' from my school (my school made it mandatory to get a mac this year) and I was installing some of my applications. Then I got the "You need to restart your computer" message. I restarted, and all i got was a blue screen with my pointer. Then after a while it says the same restart message. Also I have tried booting from the Snow Leopard Disk, but I get the same message before the actual SL installer comes up. I have been able to get the Macbook to boot in safe mode and I repaired permissions and the disk, however that does not seem to help. I have also reset the PRAM and that did nothing. I am running out of ideas... how can I fix this?!? Help! You should not be having kernel panics on a new Mac. Kernel panic causes is sometimes hardware related. Your computer is still under warranty since it's new. You can either call Apple tech support or try the suggestions mentioned in User Tips: Kernel Panics and this article - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1392

First MBP Grey Screen/Boot Problems/Only boots in Safe Mode
Hi everyone,
I've spent the last few days researching previous troubleshoots and threads on the subject, but haven't had much luck unfortunately.
This is a 2011 MBP, 2.2 GHz, 4 gb RAM, 15 inch. As a preface, I use(d) an external monitor via my MBP's mini-display port, and at some points, the monitor (both) would become distorted, vertical lines running down, and then both would freeze, so I immediately thought my GPU was going. Then after a few restarts after the problem occurred a few times, I got the infamous boot issue: the grey screen (after viewing the spinning logo), so to the forums and research it was.
Now, my MBP will boot in safe mode with no issues. Getting it to boot off of a disc with the "C" option works about 50/50, but I usually end up being able to get to it.
This is what I've attempted thus far from everything I've read:
Repaired Disk: repaired
Repaired Permissions: repaired (both of which I did in safe-mode AND from disc-booting, if that helps)
Reset SMC
Reset PRAM
Reinstalled factory RAM (2 x 2 gbs) ((I had a 2 gb stick and an 8 gb stick) Status of RAM via Profiler: OK
Removed peripheral devices to give that a shot with no luck
Reinstalled OS X (Snow Leopard, by the way, from disc)
Performed both abridged AND extended Apple Hardware Test: No problems found (which is what took me away from Logic Board or GPU issues..)
Used Time Machine backups to restore from previous working date (I regularly backed up my MBP) and have two seperate external drives with backups, though no clones.
Reformatted my entire 750 gb HD, last night, reinstalled the OS X, did not try and restore from Time Machine (as I know I could do that at a later date) and following completion of the OS X install and upon the "restart" requested of me, my MBP had a dark blue freeze, so I cold booted to the same problem of the grey screen, which is where I'm at now.
Summary:
Can Safe Boot with no issues. Reformatted drive. Reinstalled OS X (10.6.7, software update to 10.6.8). Operating with original RAM, went through trouble shoot procedures.
From what I've read, a lot of people have said to replace the MBP Hard Drive cable (SATA) cable, which I have ordered per my model, so I'm waiting on that.
Is there anything else I can do, or try in the meantime? I'd like to know peoples' thoughts on if my HD has failed (thought DU says it's fine) and the fact I can boot in safe mode, and whether a hard drive cable replacement is a probable fix.
This MBP was purchased NEW in June of 2011 and has been well maintained.
Thanks for any thoughts, suggestions, critiques,...anything.Hi everyone,

Lion 10.7 Only Boots in Safe Mode. Is This a Hardware or Software Issue?
Hi. On my iMac late 2009 i7 8GB bought last March only. I reinstalled Lion (I didn't erase the whole disk because I have Boot Camp Windows and I have filed there) and it can only boot in safe mode if I use the Mac's built-in EFI bootloader (where you have to press option on restart) menu then press shift after choosing the iMac OS X hardisk. I've been trying to fix it for around 4 days now today. I'm tempted to take it to the authorized Mac shop but that could take weeks to months in our country. If I let it boot normally, it would seem to have a kernel panic and would stop at the white/gray screen. Verbose mode showed that is stopped at something 10 of these like: nstat fail.
Is this a GPU hardware problem, specifically the 3D element of this 4850M GPU? I'd like to do load each kext, each extension manually but I can't find them in Lion. When I use the Lion DVD or the Lion Recovery partition, it's very sluggish, every click and process takes 20 seconds to minutes. If I try to boot in Linux, Snow Leopard DVD or Snow Leopard external hardisk, there seems to be a kernel panic. It's either just a black screen or a garbled screen.
I want to erase/format the iMac's hardisk but in Safe Mode, it can't be mounted even if I use Disk Utility. If only there's a way to force it to mount, I can save some Windows 7 file to one of my external hardisk or flash drive. Does anyone know of an app or program that can mount NTFS files on Lion's Safe mode?
If it's a Lion bug, has Lion somehow corrupted the Mac's built-in (hardware not the EFI partition in the hardisk) EFI or somehow corrupted the Mac or GPU's ROM? Could it be a new OS X virus? Should I then perform in Safe Mode to flash the GPU ROM and the Mac's ROM again (I have the latest)?
Do you think if I erased the whole drive, reinstalled it again with either Snow Leopard (assuming it doesn't boot into a garbled screen) or Lion things will go back to normal?
Has anyone experienced something like this? What was the culprit (was it a hardware or software issue) and what was the solution?
Gbu.Hi thanks for all the concern and replies. I've tried all that.
I had just got it back from the shop last Friday. It was there for around two weeks. It was a faulty GPU (when you see garbled display that's consisten when booting it the GPU). I have a strong feeling it's related to the Lion install 10.7 or 10.7.1 and may be similar to reports of Mac laptops overheating. It's good the GPU is removable, it might have taken 3 week or a month if it had been the whole board.
It's a blessing in disguise though as with all or most cases because I also got to have the LCD replaced for excessive backlight bleeding (in my opinion), the dead pixel from the previous LCD isn't there anymore (though under the glass there're some smudges but nothing crucial). The backlight bleeding is still the same though in my opinion but at least it's new.
It's a great thing I bought Applecare. I didn't buy it for the iPhone because that's more durable (my iPhone 3G's 3 years old now and it's still solid. Although there are scratches and a crack at the back at the bottom, got sqeezed under the table I think when I sat). I think Applecare is a good recommend for things that get hot like desktop and laptop Macs(are the iOS considered Macs btw?) which are twice or thrice the price of iOS devices.

Hard drive won't boot into safe mode
My mid 2010 Macbook Pro has suddenly decided to not boot up after installing BitDefender and running a scan.
I installed it on a whim when I saw minor malware that hijacked Safari, and decided to run a scan. While I was working on Photoshop, the scan must have finished because all of my windows disappeared and I was left with my desktop and the spinning gray loading at the bottom of my screen. I waited 20 minutes, realized it wasn't going anywhere and force shut down the Macbook by power button.
Now, I cannot successfully get it past the grey apple loading screen. Attempting to boot into safe mode still leaves it at the same screen. Tried to reset the PRAM, still can't get past the loading screen. I still have my OS disk, however it is Snow Leopard and my current is Mavericks and I'm unsure if it is a wise idea.
15 inch mid 2010 Macbook Pro running OS X Mavericks, how dead in the water am I and how much would this cost me to "fix"?Use the original Snow Leopard installation disk and start the MBP as if you were going to reinstall the OSX. Early in the process you should see a menu bar on the top of the display. Click on UTILITIES and from the dropdown menu select Disk Utility. Run Disk Utility>First Aid, Verify and Repair. If it is not successful, the HDD will have to be replaced.

Unrecoverable crashes and booting in safe mode
Hi there,
I've tried contacting Ambrosia support about this, but have not been able to get a solution. I thought I'd try here in case anyone else has any ideas.
I recently upgraded to Leopard, and now whenever I invoke Snapz Pro, it causes an immediate and unrecoverable crash. The computer becomes unresponsive and I need to shut down by holding down the power button to get control back. Apparently, nobody else using Snapz has experienced this.
I've tried a number of things, all without luck, including:
- created a new user on my machine, and logged in as that user -- no luck
- performed a new, clean install of Leopard on my main drive, and before migrating my old user data back over -- no luck
- removed some new memory I recently installed just to see if that was it -- no luck
- removed all USB/firewire accessories except for the keyboard and mouse -- no luck
The only thing that seems to work is to boot in safe mode. Then it works fine.
I have no idea what could be causing this. Right now I'm using a fresh install of Leopard -- I haven't installed any new accessories or applications, so it's like a brand new computer, and it won't work.
I'm using a Powermac G5 Dual 2GHz, 2.5Gb RAM, ATI X800 card (drivers up to date). Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.Just so everybody knows, I've found out this crashing only occurs when the resolution on the cinema display is set to the maximum (2560 x 1600). Lowering the resolution to any other setting, even the next lowest (2048 x 1536) restores the normal function of Snapz Pro without the crashing.
It appears to be a problem either with Apple or ATI and the drivers used for the X800 XT with Leopard on a 30" display. Not sure if/when that might get fixed, but at least I can use the program now.
