Unable to burn CDs -- can't burn at this speed

My superdrive suddenly no longer will burn CDs. I get an error message that "the drive cannot burn at this speed" and this is no matter what speed I try! Even 2X get's this message.
I upgraded to iTunes 5.0. Can this be the problem? I am using 10.2.x and hate to invest in whatever the latest OS is if that isn't the solution. Any one have any ideas?

Hi
I have a similar problem.
I get this error message :
"Itunes can't burn teh CD because the burn speed is too fast for your CD burner or media
Choose a lower speed in the burning pane of itunes preferences then try burning again"
The problem is that I have just burnt a few CD's and then gone back to burn another...In the interim the only thing that has happened is that the laptop has gone to sleep.
It is the inconsistency that bugs me plus the fact that surely that one could design it so you got the warning before wasting CD's or it automatically adjusted to the drives speed
I am running itunes 5.0.1 on OSX 10.3.9 on a G3 ibook 600mhz 14.1

  • My outgoing email suddenly quit working.  Settings are correct, but says server unable to send. Can receive fine.  This happened on both Iphone

My outgoing email suddendly stopped working.  Happened first on my IPhone, msgs were stuck in outbox.  This self-corrected, and now my Mac Pro will not send email.  It says server not able to send, but I can receive fine.  No changes were made.  Settings are correct.  Any ideas what's wrong?

OK, I thought you'd like to know that I figured it out!   Yea.
I reasoned since my iphone is now sending, I would check to see if the exact same settings in the advanced mail area were the same.
The port on my phone was 110, but in advanced mail area on the mac it was 995/SSL.
I clicked on that and it defaulted to 110.
But what is strange is the 110 port is supposed to be for incoming mail (which I was getting fine even tho it had the 995 port) and the smtp outgoing I thought was a defaulted 25 port.
Anyway, when I changed the mac to the 110 port in advanced area, the mail in outbox was immediately sent.
I have absolutely no idea how the port server was changed to 995 SSL on the mac, since no one but myself uses this computer and I certainly didn't change it.  Also, it doesn't at all explain the iphone doing the exact same thing a week ago, even tho that port said 110 when I checked.  Very strange indeed, but thanks for the help anyone who is reading this and I hope this helps anyone else having a similar problem....

  • Unable to burn CDs

    Hi;
I have just installed iTunes on a new WIN 7 64 bit computer and I am unable to burn CDs. When starting iTunes I get the message that I need to re-install iTunes to fix the problem. I have done that but still does not solve the issue, Also installed the GEAR driver as suggested in another thread.

    Thanks for any help

Thanks for the quick response I went to the device manager and did what you asked and no change in performance, but in the drop-down of the DVD/CD Rom Drive the next file? of HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T2ON ATA DEVICE on the icon there is a pyramid with the yellow exclamation point inside??. I've tried to update the drivers but Microsoft says that they are up to date. It seems that my Windows Media Player does not know or recognize that I have an internal CD burner because on the side box where you are to drag songs to burn, the message of "Connect a burner and restart the player". As you can tell I am not very computer literate so any help will be greatly appreciated. How can I tell if the CD/DVD player is just broken?? Thanks so much.

  • Suddenly unable to burn cds

Hello, I have been unable to burn playlists onto a cd from iTunes. I get a "Disc Burner or software not found" error. However, if I remove the Image Simulation drive from Device Manager, the error disappears but then iTunes freezes and will not burn properly. This just happened Friday. I have tried different brand of discs as well with no resolution. Need help.

    I have the same problem.
Best I can make of it at the moment is that it wants everyone to be the administrator on their computer, wants you to remove any virtual drive software you have installed on the computer, and then it also doesn't like your cd drive anymore because its "unsupported"!! Or at least thats what has happened to me.
Still trying to find out how to fix it.

  • Unable to burn DMG files to CDs on external USB2 disc burners?

    Hello.
I am having difficulties burning 88.x MB DMG files to CDs (new CD-Rs and an old CD-RW) onto two different external USB2 disc burner drives (both have power AC connected: HP and LG Super brands). The new Mac Mini (no disc slot drive)'s updated 64-bit Mac OS X 10.7.4's Disk Utilities tries to burn and then fail right away or after a few seconds. The error says "Unable to burn 'whatever.dmg' (The disc drive did not respond properly and can't recover or retry." Nothing interesting in dmesg, but Disk Utility's logs had details: http://pastie.org/private/6tnqcnkwycr2yftp8gkzxw ...
I do see my drives' lights on during the burn. I can quick erase the old CD-RW fine. I can burn 538 MB from an 64-bit Windows 8 on my Acer AM3800 PC with the same discs and external burner drives without any problems. Also, I thought it was my USB cable extension, but it wasn't it. I don't use any USB hubs either. DMG files are fine too. I did notice copying from a CD to Mac Mini's local HDD was slow, but no failures.
What could be the problem? Is USB2 too slow or something? Thank you in advance.

    Did you look at...
    ~/Library/Logs/DiscRecording.log
USB2 is slow, but not that slow, but have you tried reducing the burn speed?

To avoid these issues, you guessed it, you shouldn't delete the /tmp symbolic link from the Mac OS X volume.
If /tmp is missing, it's easy to make a new one by following these steps:
Mac OS X 10.3 or later
Recreate the missing /tmp link by using the Disk Utility application to repair permissions on your Mac OS X startup volume.

Unable to burn CDs using i tunes. Have run diognostics.    Summary:-   i tunes not running in safe mode.

    Please help.

That's why you want to make a backup of the registry. If you didn't make a backup, use MS system restore to go back. The only values you should remove are UpperFilter or LowerFilter - one or both may be in there and can be removed. If neither value exists, then that is probably why you can't burn and Windows is not recognizing your drive as a writable drive.

  • Matshita DVD-R UJ 857-E (unable to burn CDs but reading DVDs and CDs)

I have had the macbook and burner for about three years.
I am unable to burn cds. When I attempt to do so in iTunes or Toast the error message reads "please insert a recordable cd". I have used the same cds to burn on other computers so I believe this is a problem with my drive and not the cds I'm trying to record to.
I am able to burn DVDs in Toast.
Any ideas? I'm looking for a driver right now...

I truly believe this is a software issue. I changed the system settings of the CD/DVD (system profiler) of "when inserting a blank CD to 'open finder' " ( u can use 'ask me' but I didn't have that option) instead of opening iTunes. Once the CD was mounted I was able to burn to the disk in iTunes as well as iPhoto. I was unable to that when I just inserted the disk from the program when prompted.

  • A cd in itunes & unable to burn..why? answer none of file can be burned to a cd..

loadeded a cd in itunes & unable to burn.  error message says none of file can be burned.

Tell us more about your computer and software.  All we see is it is an iMac which could be over 12 years old and running software that is 10 system versions out of date.
Have you tried a premium brand of CDs?  Slower burn speed?

I am unable to burn mp3 audio files to cd.Every time it says failed due to media write error.I have tried different speeds. Can anyone help pls?

There are several different incompatible media sold as writeable CDs. You MUST match the media to the abilities of your drive.
I was flummoxed by buying 8x media when my drive was a 2x drive. I needed the other type, and there was nothing helpful in the diagnostics or the packaging that helped me understand that.
EDIT: There is an interesting helpful feature buried in System Profiler ... (read the last two lines of the report):

    Micky,
The iTunes Store sells songs in AAC format.  Most Android phones can play AACs.  Just sync them to your phone per the instructions with the phone.
If by any chance your phone does require MP3 format, you can use iTunes to convert the files, per this guide:
iTunes: How to convert a song to a different file format - Apple Support
(This conversion does not require burning.)
For future reference, note that the iTunes Store is really optimized for people using Apple devices.  You might find it more convenient to buy music in Mp3 format from Amazon Digital Music or Google Play Music.

  • I can no longer burn CDs  - "may be incompatible with this disc burner, try slower speed, try another make of disc"  Still doesn't work

I can no longer burn CDs  - "may be incompatible with this disc burner, try a slower speed, try another make of disc"  Tried that, still doesn't work.

Try a free burning utility which allows you to turn off the laser for test burning (so you don't waste media).  Try burning a test CD outside of iTunes.  If it works it's iTunes. If it doesn't work it could be computer software or hardware but then we know how to proceed.

  • I am unable to burn CDs with songs recently purchased from itunes. No problem before. When I try to burn a playlist with new songs, I get the error message that "songs will not it on 1 audio CD". If I remove all songs except the new one, it will burn.

I am unable to burn CD's with the last 4 songs I've purchased from the iTunes store. I can burn CD's from playlist using previously purchased songs with no problem. With a normal length playlist including 1 of the newly purchased songs, I get the message "songs will not fit on one CD". I can remove all but the new song and 1 other and the CD will burn. I have upgraded to the latest version of iTunes and still have the problem.

I have that EXACT same problem! I have no idea what to do though, but it is very mucho frustrating. Let me know if you find out anything, and I will do the same.

  • Unable to burn CDs on MacBook Pro

    HI,
I just bought a new Macbook Pro and I am unable to burn CDs. When I try to burn an Audio CD it starts burning and suddenly aborts saying that there is a medium write error. I also tried burning in Toast Titatinium and had the same problem. I then tried to burn an mp3 data cd directly using the finder and draging files to the CD folder. It also had a problem saying that the device was unable to calibrate the burning power. I have been using Sony CD-R that look pretty good quality and my burner (as my computer) is brand new.
I don't know what to do. I'm a DJ and I bought this computer thinking that it would easily allow me to work with music and that I could easily import and burn, and that certainly has not been the case. I had to ask a friend to burn some urgent music and my CDs and files burned fine in his PC. I just switched to Mac myself but my experience hasn't been too good this far.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

I would take it up with Apple since the computer is under warranty. It sounds highly possible that you have a bad optical drive. Please don't mistake this as a "diagnosis" from another user, but just a recommendation of what to do based on the circumstances you've described in your post.
    Good luck.
