Unable to burn cds since upgrading to iTunes 8

i use dell in the office. i was always able to burn cds using itunes until i upgraded to version 8.0 (this problem continued even after upgrading to 8.1).
when i try to burn a disc it ejects the blank cd inside and i get an error message that says "the attempt to burn a disc failed. an unknown error occured (2131)."
the burner is able to burn using any other application on the computer. i ran diagnostics in itunes and here is what it said. can someone please help me?

Andrew,
This thread talks about error 2131 and Dell computers. About 3/4 of the way down someone posts a link to a firmware download that seems to solve the problem for a lot of people. Maybe it will help you too.

    Hello
I need help with Itunes, Itunes does not open. Also I cannot burn Cds since I transfered Itunes to external dirve.
    Please help.
    Steve

iPods don't look for the library. iTunes does.
I recently moved my itunes music folder
    Don't move your music folder.
    Let iTunes do it.
Point iTunes prefs to the location where you wan tit.
Then go to menu Advanced -> *Consolidate library*.
This will copy the iTunes music folder to the location in iTunes prefs.

  • Cannot burn Audio CDs (only Data CDs) since upgrade to Itunes 7

I'm having a problem and it is very frustrating. Worked fine with Ver. 6 but you had to download to ver. 7 before you could purchase any new music so I did. Big mistake! My problem is burning CDs. I can only burn "Data CDs." I went to "Edit" and then to "preferences" then to "Advanced" and then to "Burning" -At that point you have a choice to choose Audio CD burning or Data CD burning. I will not stay on Audio CD burning - keeps defaulting to Data CD burning and there is no "save" button or anything to stop it from happening. When it burns from the data cd it the cd will only play in my computer - not in my car or other player. Would you know how to correct this???? to stop the default? My ipod is fine. I hope Apple takes care of this soon.

Finding this Post took some time but I thought it was me talking when I read it. I was having the exact same issue. I have a G3 I've been upgrading like mad, including a Sonnet G4-500 CPU a Maxtor 60gb & 80gb HDs 1gb of RAM a new LaCie Firewire800 PCI card Graphics card etc. the latest was installing Panther 10.3.9 on the new 80gb HD and also swapping out the old CD-ROM and replacing with the (Apple standard) Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-110D combo drive in it's place. got everything up and booted and poof! no burning. Toast worked read/write no problem. iTunes could read and import no problem, but wouldn't burn a CD.
Downloaded "PatchBurn 3.1.3" installed, re-booted and all is OK in burner land again :>)
I wanted to just post my additional thanks to the lead to Patchburner, and I'm going to donate to the cause. It's worth a $20 donation just for my joy of not throwing this computer out the window!!

  • Can't burn CDs since upgrading to Tiger

I have a 1GHz powerbook G4 with a combo drive. Before I upgraded to Tiger I could burn CDs no problem. Now, CD-Rs from the very same batch as I used before don't get recognized on the desktop.
    Important facts before you reply:
    1. YES, I have checked that the preferences are properly checked so that the CDs should not be ignored.
    2. Disk Utility can see the disk but says that they are not writable. However, the problem is not with the disk: my husband has a computer that is almost identical (1.5GHz Powerbook with Super Drive) and the same disk shows up fine.
    3. The drive itself is working, in that it can see pre-written disks no problem.
    4. I have already tried completely erasing my hard drive and clean-installing the OS and software. Made absolutely no difference.
    5. I'm running the absolute latest version of the OS.
    6. The details of the drive itself (as lifted from system profiler) are below.
    MATSHITA CD-RW CW-8123:
    Firmware Revision:     CA0T
    Interconnect:     ATAPI
    Burn Support:     Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
    Cache:     2048 KB
    Reads DVD:     Yes
    CD-Write:     -R, -RW
    Burn Underrun Protection CD:     Yes
    Write Strategies:     CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw
    Media:     No

what I try do do sometimes is I have a Hard drive that I keep Panther on and when I run into problems like that I boot from an external Hard Drive and check it out. If you have access to an external HD that you can boot from or just install the Computers original CD's on it and test it out if that hasn't worked then it could be that the Drive has hardware malfunctions internally and could have broken down as a coincidence of installing OS tiger. I often did this trick when I first got tiger because I was having too many problems with it. I know this is probably not the best answer but I hope it helps you out. let me know of any developments.

I have just installed iTunes on a new WIN 7 64 bit computer and I am unable to burn CDs. When starting iTunes I get the message that I need to re-install iTunes to fix the problem. Thanks for any help

Thanks for the quick response I went to the device manager and did what you asked and no change in performance, but in the drop-down of the DVD/CD Rom Drive the next file? of HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T2ON ATA DEVICE on the icon there is a pyramid with the yellow exclamation point inside??. I've tried to update the drivers but Microsoft says that they are up to date. It seems that my Windows Media Player does not know or recognize that I have an internal CD burner because on the side box where you are to drag songs to burn, the message of "Connect a burner and restart the player". As you can tell I am not very computer literate so any help will be greatly appreciated. How can I tell if the CD/DVD player is just broken?? Thanks so much.

  • Problems since upgrading to Itunes 6.0.1.3

Ever since upgrading to Itunes 6.0.1.3, songs will not update to my Ipod. Called Tech Support twice on this and they suggested: Uninstalling/reinstalling Itunes (done three times so far); Reformatting the Ipod back to factory default (done twice); disabling anti-virus. NONE of this has worked. Also found out that Apple Tech Support is VERY weak on Itunes support. Songs show in my Library, but will not update to Ipod. Any suggestions?

Found my solution after spending 1 hour/10 min on phone. Tech referred me to article 93716 (removing Itunes, Empty Temp Directory). I still had the same issue (not all songs updating). I checked Windows Explorer and the files that were NOT updating were located in backup folder I had created at some point during the two-week troubleshooting process. When I moved these folders into the Itunes directory, EVERYTHING started working again (creating playlists, burning CD's, moving music to my Ipod).
I learned that even though Itunes shows everything in your Library broken down by playlist, purchased music, etc.--they could be ANYWHERE on your hard drive. However, to update the Ipod, it appears they need to be in the Itunes directory.
I'm not sure why all this broke in the first place, but here is a list of the articles that I followed:
Article #93698, #32222, 93716. I also learned that the Apple Tech Lady, although very nice, could NOT tell me anything about the directory structure of Itunes, where the songs should be, or much about Itunes in general.

  • Unable to update iPod after upgrading to iTunes 7.0.1.

Ever since upgrading to iTunes 7.0.1 from 6.x I have been unable to update my iPod. (60Gb with Video). It says on inserting my iPod a new version is available (1.2) from 1.1.2
I get "The iPod "name" could not be updated. An unknown error occurred (1417)".
I have tried the standard things... reset internet connection, restart PC, uninstall and reinstall iTunes...
    Anyone resolved this problem?

I'm unable to burn a CD-R in iTunes. It tells me the CD burner is being used by another application; however, I seem to find out what's using it.
I'm unable to eject the CD since it not shown on the Desk Top. I have to restart the system to eject the CD?
Very unclear as to what is happening?

  • Unable to burn CDs on MacBook Pro

    HI,
I just bought a new Macbook Pro and I am unable to burn CDs. When I try to burn an Audio CD it starts burning and suddenly aborts saying that there is a medium write error. I also tried burning in Toast Titatinium and had the same problem. I then tried to burn an mp3 data cd directly using the finder and draging files to the CD folder. It also had a problem saying that the device was unable to calibrate the burning power. I have been using Sony CD-R that look pretty good quality and my burner (as my computer) is brand new.
I don't know what to do. I'm a DJ and I bought this computer thinking that it would easily allow me to work with music and that I could easily import and burn, and that certainly has not been the case. I had to ask a friend to burn some urgent music and my CDs and files burned fine in his PC. I just switched to Mac myself but my experience hasn't been too good this far.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

I would take it up with Apple since the computer is under warranty. It sounds highly possible that you have a bad optical drive. Please don't mistake this as a "diagnosis" from another user, but just a recommendation of what to do based on the circumstances you've described in your post.
    Good luck.

  • Matshita DVD-R UJ 857-E (unable to burn CDs but reading DVDs and CDs)

I have had the macbook and burner for about three years.
I am unable to burn cds. When I attempt to do so in iTunes or Toast the error message reads "please insert a recordable cd". I have used the same cds to burn on other computers so I believe this is a problem with my drive and not the cds I'm trying to record to.
I am able to burn DVDs in Toast.
Any ideas? I'm looking for a driver right now...

I truly believe this is a software issue. I changed the system settings of the CD/DVD (system profiler) of "when inserting a blank CD to 'open finder' " ( u can use 'ask me' but I didn't have that option) instead of opening iTunes. Once the CD was mounted I was able to burn to the disk in iTunes as well as iPhoto. I was unable to that when I just inserted the disk from the program when prompted.

  • Since upgrading to itunes 11.1.4.62 my iPad and Ipod will not sync

Since upgrading to iTunes 11.1.4.62 my iPad and iPod are no longer recognized by iTunes when plugged into my Windows 8.1 PC? I have re-downloaded itunes and re-intalled/repaired the program but still will recognize the two. This has never been an issue before have always sync the two and the only change has been the most recent upgrade of itunes?

I had to set up an admin user account on my pc  after trying to restore my phone after ios 7 nearly broke my pc. I used the admin account to delete all apple stuff as instructed and installed 11.1.4. Hate the new look and all that was left was some old stuff i had bought on itunes.Anything less than about 2 years old and my extensive vinyl library i had uploaded all gone. i back up every week. i found some music in  the recycle bin and it took hours to restore that but i was still missing loads. I plugged in my 3rd gen touch. All my  sync settings were gone and it would not let me change them, it was all unticked so sync wiped my touch. i tried again but still wouldn't let me select anything and said duplicate names were specified, my options were to  erase the touch, overwrite the library on the pc or cancel. So a disaster. Then I logged in under my usual user id where i had failed to download the new itunes and my old library still existed - shame i cannot back up or sync anymore here either. The only thing i could do was restore my wiped touch as i still had a back up left here. whenever i plug in i get the duplicate names specified message erase or cancel and i can't change the settings which are all unticked here too. I think itunes can see my admin account library and my usual account library and can see they are not the same and this is the duplicate names problem
i would like to know how i can get my music out of itunes safely on to my computer so i can play it on something other than itunes.
Unfortunately my iphone is on orange so i am cursed with that too and their latest service issues have destroyed my battery. I can't get a new phone though becuase i won't be able to restore to get my stuff on to new phone becuase of this duplicate names error.
Apple have really messed things up for me - please can you tell me how to get my music out in a format that will play on other players and i suppose i will just have to write off the £50 credit i have in tunes but i cannot carry on with these disasters and apples indifference

Thank you Meta, but I could not get the calendar and contact sync with Gmail to work. Apple support already suggested to use Google or a Windows PC. Maybe I should actually reset and try my old Windows PC. Seriously, ... can this be the solution after a Mac OS update for pure Apple users?
