Unable to burn DMG files to CDs on external USB2 disc burners?

Hello.
I am having difficulties burning 88.x MB DMG files to CDs (new CD-Rs and an old CD-RW) onto two different external USB2 disc burner drives (both have power AC connected: HP and LG Super brands). The new Mac Mini (no disc slot drive)'s updated 64-bit Mac OS X 10.7.4's Disk Utilities tries to burn and then fail right away or after a few seconds. The error says "Unable to burn 'whatever.dmg' (The disc drive did not respond properly and can't recover or retry." Nothing interesting in dmesg, but Disk Utility's logs had details: http://pastie.org/private/6tnqcnkwycr2yftp8gkzxw ...
I do see my drives' lights on during the burn. I can quick erase the old CD-RW fine. I can burn 538 MB from an 64-bit Windows 8 on my Acer AM3800 PC with the same discs and external burner drives without any problems. Also, I thought it was my USB cable extension, but it wasn't it. I don't use any USB hubs either. DMG files are fine too. I did notice copying from a CD to Mac Mini's local HDD was slow, but no failures.
What could be the problem? Is USB2 too slow or something? Thank you in advance.

Did you look at...
~/Library/Logs/DiscRecording.log
USB2 is slow, but not that slow, but have you tried reducing the burn speed?
At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac, then click on More Info, then click on Hardware>Disk Burning & report what it says, like ...

To avoid these issues, you guessed it, you shouldn't delete the /tmp symbolic link from the Mac OS X volume.
If /tmp is missing, it's easy to make a new one by following these steps:
Mac OS X 10.3 or later
Recreate the missing /tmp link by using the Disk Utility application to repair permissions on your Mac OS X startup volume.

  • Unable to burn additional files to CD

I'm unable to burn additional files to a CD I previously burned to.
When I look at the CD via disk utility it states "Write Status :Read Only"
Is there a way that I can still write to this CD?
I assume I must have done something wrong earlier with the first burn to allow multisessions.
    Any ideas?
    thanks!

No, you can't write to it again. You can't write a session from the Finder. You need to use Disk Utility or an application like Toast. Here's how to do it with Disk Utility.
Recording on a CD-R disc more than once
Normally, you can only burn information to a CD-R disc one time. If you use a CD-RW disc, you can erase the disc and then record on it again.
There is a way to use a CD-R disc more than once. If you use Disk Utility to burn the disc, you can set up the disc to accept more disk images in the future. This way, you can burn a disk image now and add to the disc later until there is no more room on the disc. This is called "multisession" burning.
IMPORTANT: Some formats (such as ISO) only allow one disc burning session. Others, such as HFS+ (Mac-OS Extended) allow more than one session until the disc is filled.
1 Create a folder for the session and drag the items you want to burn into the folder.
2 Open Disk Utility, located in Applications/Utilities.
3 Select Images > New > "Image from Folder." Then select the folder you created in the navigation window and click Open.
4 Type a name for the image, choose a disk format, and click Save.
5 When the disk image is complete, select it in the left column of the Disk Utility window.
6 Choose Images > Burn or click Burn in the tool bar.
7 Insert a blank CD in the optical drive.
8 Select the "Leave disc appendable" checkbox. If you don't see this option, click the triangle in the top-right corner to see this option.
    9 Click Burn.

  • Can I burn .dmg files on a PC?

Hello. I'd like to know if anyone here has any ideas on how to burn .dmg or .img files on a PC.

I guess that means they are not going to work as copies of the installer CDs.
Do you have the facility to make the copies on a Mac?  That would be your best bet.  You can make copies on a Mac as follows:
    Duplicate a CD or DVD
    1. Insert the DVD/CD;
    2. Open Disk Utility, and select the DVD/CD from the left side list (select the DVD/CD icon on top);
    3. from the DU File menu select New | Disk Image from Disk 1;
    4. Choose to format the disk image as DVD/CD Master, name the disk image and click Save;
    5. When the .cdr file is finished select it with mouse and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info and check the box to lock the file;
    6. Choose the .cdr file from the left side list, click Burn, and insert a new, blank DVD or CD.

  • Burning DMG File To DVD

I am trying to burn Adobe CS4 dmg file to DVD as a back up. The size is 6.9GB so I am using a Dual Layered DVD which is at least 8GB. For some reason when I try to burn the dmg to DVD I get a message saying "disk doesn't have enough space. Am I doing something wrong? Here are the steps I took...
    1) Inserted blank DVD
    2) Added DMG file to Disk Utility
    3) Highlighted DMG file within Disk Utility and chose the burn option from the menu
This method has worked previously with a 6GB dmg file of iLife using the same exact blank Dual Layered DVD. Also, FYI I am running 10.5.5 Thanks for any help. It's greatly appreciated.

Are you expanding the DMG (you don't want to)? Incidentally, the iLife copy is different than what you are doing. Are you trying to copy the CS4 disk? If so, DU can make an image for you, of the disk. Make certain you save it as a "master", not "encrypted", or any other choice. Then, as you explain, select it, and hit burn.

  • Burning .dmg file from Windows computer

If I create an iDVD project and save it as a .dmg file (instead of burning it right away), can that file then be burned to a DVD from ANY computer--Windows or Mac?
I'll be away from my external DVD burner (only have the combo drive in my PB) and want to be able to use a Windows computer at work to burn the final DVD.
Is this possible? If so, will it still burn a regular playable video DVD?

Doesn't sound like image files are universal (take a look at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.img). But, why not give it a try? You'll need some method to transport that large file that's also cross-platform (perhaps create a tiny trial project).

  • I'm unable to download dmg files

I'm unable to download most of the dmg files that I've tried. Last time I tried was with Dropbox (at http://www.dropbox.com/downloading?os=mac), a blank page shows and nothing happens after.
Appreciate your support to overcome this annyoing issue.

I had the same problem for ages - the problem came down to Speed Downloader - a download manager i installed ages ago which hadn't uninstalled properly.
If you have reset your pref's, done a permission repair and still failing check for installed plugins - Safari > Help > Installed Plugins - a list of all the plugins are in use there, I found the offending download manager plugin file name there and searched via spotlight then trashed it. All works OK from then on

  • Unable to burn mp4a files

sorry if this answered herein, but could not find: i am burning a dvd (to be able to put more music on it) and have found that many of my files in itunes are mp4a instead of mp3s.... even albums i was previously able to burn to a cd are now mp4a files... is there a way to burn these, or convert them? did i somehow convert them from mp3 to mp4a without realizing it? does apple lossless do this and therefore i should avoid? any links or suggestions much appreciated.
    zigy/boulder co

if one wants to burn cds on occasion, to import AGAIN -- in the mp3 format -- when i want to burn a cd? or is there a way to convert the already imported .m4a files to mp3 temporarily and then revert to the m4a format?
If you're importing your CDs as Apple Lossless, you can convert those Lossless tracks to MP3 without needing to re-import. Set the Importing preference to MP3, select the tracks you want to convert, and select the "Convert Selection.." command under the Advanced menu. iTunes will then make a copy (it's not really converting) of the tracks in MP3 format. You can then burn those copies to your DVD and either keep the MP3s in iTunes or delete them. If you show the Kind column - control-click on any of the column headers you'll be able to select that column to show - you can then click on the Kind header to sort by Kind and you'll quickly see the MP3s. You can also make Smart Playlists to show just the MP3s.
Don't forget to set the Importing preference back to Apple Lossless once you're through converting.

  • Cant burn music files on CDs

I am having trouble burning music cds using the burner. The music will initially burn but after listening to the disc I realize the quality becomes poor including lots of skipping, especially towards the end of the disc. I use a standard cd-r and never surpass capacity.
Is there a way to fix this problem or should I send my mac in?

  • Unable to burn purchased tracks to CDs - MP4 format

Has anyone solved this one? I have my preferences set to audio CD? I'm wondering if its because I am using CD RWs should I just try CD Rs?
If I cant burn the purchased music to CDs theres no point in buying from iTunes.

How are you trying to burn the tracks? Do you know that you need to create a playlist and burn it to CD rather than burn the tracks directly to CD?
Your purchased music is covered by DRM, so this restricts the number of times you can create a CD with your purchased tracks. You can only burn the same playlist to CD up to seven times. If you've already burned your purchased album then you'd be better making a copy of the CD you've already created.

  • Unable to recover data files from cds after system recovery

My g7 Pav. NB crashed. I made backup cds and recovery media cds. I performed a system restore and the NB started working OK, Now I can't restore any data from the cds. The data on the cds will not "recover".
What now? I have thousands of photos in the recovery/backup cds.
    PJC

It would be great If you could  share the exact error message that comes out whenever you try to access that particular media CD. Alternatively, you could use another computer/laptop to check and see if that particular CD has problems only in your system.
CD DVD Recovery software would be your last resort if none of the above options would seems working. Download trial version of stellar phoenix CD recovery software from here:

  • Unable to transfer large files from MB to External HDs

    Hi,
This may be an unusual one. My 1st edition Macbook won't let me transfer large files to my external hard-drives, either by USB, Ethernet or wirelessly through my home wi-fi network.
I've started video editing so I'm importing DVcam tapes through firewire from the camera. A full DV tape translates to about 8-12gb I think.
Using iMovie and saving the import to my Freecom 3.5inch network harddrive vis USB or ethernet, it fails saying 'Unexpected error, error code 1309'.
When I try quicktime pro instead to import the tape to the external HD, I get 'Operation could not be completed, An attempt to add a resource to the file failed'. This happens too with my WD 2.5inch external drive.
However, there is no such problem when I import to the MB's internal harddrive. When I then try and shift the large file off the laptop to an external drive, via USB, ethernet of wirelessly, for editing and save keeping, it fails half way through.
I have the same problem when I try back-up my 17gb virtual windows machine I use with VMware fusion off the laptop to an external drive.
I am currently burning an 18gb iMovie project from the MB's internal HD, over 5 DVDs using Toast's disc-spanning and will reimport them to the external, which is really time consuming.
Also to note, Final Cut Express doesn't have these problems as it seems to break up what would be an 18gb movie file into several smaller files, which my MB is quiet happy to let go onto an external drive. However, the problem re-emerges on Final Cut Ex when I try and import a HDV tape. Possibly FCE isn't breaking them up into small enough pieces for my MB to handle?
Any ideas why this is happening and what I can do to fix it? Or does this mean a new laptop?

I'm a bit late to the party, but specifically there's a 4GB file size limit in the FAT32 format that is standard on many external hard drives. I've run across this problem before, and usually it copies over most of the file and then quits when it reaches the limit.

  • I can't open dmg files anymore

I JUST got this problem. I have been using my mac for a couple of years now. My Mac is a Macbook Pro, Version 10.7.2 (Lion)
Recently, I have been unable to open Dmg files, whenever I double click it, I get a message saying:

"Reason: legacy image should be converted"
I never had this problem before, so why am I getting it now? How do I fix this?

  • Trying to burn a file over 700MB using Toast titanium 7

In windows if i burn a file over the standard size cd disc it will tell me i need to use 2 cd's
i want to do that on my G5 IMAC and my G4 Powerbook using toast titanium 7 but it just says File exceeds the size of disc - thats all
    what can i do?

If you are burning a CD with Toast 7 and it is a Data Disk, in the menu that
pops out to to the left select Mac Only. Once you check that box it should
automatically burn to as many CDs as necessary. I've included a picture for
