Unable to burn with Disc Utility

I have a mac mini superdrive and I want to burn some idvd projects on DVDs that we made with students last year. I started burning one and it went fine until the end. Now I am trying to burn another project that is much bigger than the first one. It works fine until almost the end and then I get the error:"Unable to burn...The device failed to respond properly unable to recover or retry".
I am using the same blank dvds as for the first project and last year I did burn this project on the same computer. What can I do?
Thank you for your help.

*A few suggestions:*
Repairing permissions & then restarting your computer usually cures "burning" hiccups. Should be done after each burning session.
Another help source (if you haven't already done so).
Go to your OS Help Menu. In the search field type dvd
Click on all the troubleshooting topics & Support Articles that pertain to your issue.
You can also do the same in Disk Utility. Open same up.
At the bottom left of the window, click on the purple button w/the "?" in the middle.
This will bring up the Help Menu.

  • Lion: error trying to delete a partition with disc utility

Hi to all. Today I tryed to delete an old and unused partition with disc utility, but after starting the process an error pop up ans says: Necessary support for file system resize, like HFS+ with enabled journaling.
What should i do? I've created a cd with iPartition, and it works, but i prefer to use disc utility. Can anyone help?

Select the partition in Disk Utility and see if you can turn on journaling, if it's an HFS+ volume. How is the drive presently partitioned: APM, GUID, or MBR?
How old is this partition and how was it created?

  • Burning DVD's with disc utility

    HI,
Ok so my imac was just basically rebuilt (new hard drive, logic board & power supply). I use to have Panther and was able to make copies of a friend's movie for him using disc utility with no problem. Now after the rebuild I have tiger and am having an issue. I am able to make a disc image and burn the dvd but the dvd won't play in the dvd player? It says disc not supported? I am using the same original that I used prior to the rebuild so I know it works or should work anyway. Any ideas? I need to make 10 copies of some old family movies for a reunion this weekend so I need to figure this out ASAP so if anyone can HELP I would really appreciate it!!
    Thanks

    Hi kimd78,
How, exactly, are you burning the disk images to the blank DVD? You should have no problems getting an exact duplicate if you do it like this:
Mount the disk image you want to burn to a DVD
    Open Disk Utility
Click on the icon in the sidebar for the disk image you just mounted (not the icon nested below it)
Go to the "Images" menu and click "Burn"
    Good luck,
    Daniel

  • Burn Error - Disc Utility

For some while I have been trying to burn an .iso file to a disc (Tesco - DVD+RW 4.7GB) but Disc Utility says, "Unable to burn "test.iso" (The disc drive doesn't support the requested burn operation"
    Thanks,
    LoverOfTheiMac

I have also tried TDK, Maxell, Verbatim and Sony media
Me too. Out of that list the only brand that has NEVER produced a coaster (on the same burner as yours) is Verbatim DVD-R and Fuji DVD-R. All the others produced a 25-50% failure rate.
Have you tried burning at a slower speed?
Using 16x DVD media is fine - in fact it is difficult to buy any other - but there is a consensus in the Apple Support Forums that a slower burn is a better burn i.e. 2x or 4x (slow burns are better burns!). I always use Toast for burning.
The term "Best" means the fastest speed that the drive told Toast it can write to a specific disc. The drive's firmware and info on the disc decide what speed burns are available. When you press the speed setting button in Toast (after inserting a disc) you'll likely see some speeds in italics and some in bold face. The ones in bold face are supported by that media on that drive. The fastest one is what Toast calls Best.
Audio CDs in particular should be burned at the lowest supported speed.
Verification is a good indicator the disc is burned okay. However, other DVD players can still have problems with the disc. Media problems with various drives is not uncommon. Slower burning may reduce the chance of those problems, and is one of the reasons why RW (read/write) media is always rated slower than DVD-R.
There are some interesting facts here:
    http://www.osta.org/technology/dvdqa/dvdqa4.htm and here:
    http://www.osta.org/technology/dvdqa/dvdqa4.htm
But many will tell you that the 'slower burn is best' theory is outdated. Who really knows? At the end of the day, if your home-made DVD was verified by Toast and will play anywhere on anybody's DVD player, then that is the result we are all after!

  • CD burning with disk utility - format and size for 800 MB - 90 minutes CD

    Hi Support,
I'm trying to burn a CD with 800 MB (90 minutes) using disk utility. When I create a new empty image I can select the size. Unfortunately there is no option for a 90 minutes CD. When I create the image with 800 MB and I try to burn it, disk utility tells me that the image is too big. So my first question is what is the maximum size for such a CD?
Next question, which format should I use? When creating a new empty image, I have the options "Beschreibbares Image" and "Mitwachsendes Image" (I have a Germann OS). But I dont't have the option to create a "CD/DVD Master", which is availabe, when I create an image from a folder. What I have to do, is to convert the image afterwards to a "CD/DVD Master". This is very circumstantial.
    So my questions are:
    1. Is there an easier way o create an empty disk image for a CD/DVD?
    2. Is the format "CD/DVD Master" required to burn a CD. It is also possible to burn images with other formats. What is the advantage/disadvantage of this format?
    3. Which format is required to use the CD in a Windows computer or a standalone CD/DVD player? The volume format must probably "MS-DOS Filesystem" in this case?
    4. Is it possible to burn multi session CD's in this case?
    5. Is there a comprehensive documentation somewhere available for this burning issue on Mac? The help of disk utility is really not enough.
Thanks for answers and hints Thomas

    Hi thmayr!
Although the original instructions were for a 700 MB disc, perhaps the article linked to below, could be helpful.
From "Macworld" Feb 2005 issue p.90 Link To Article. Scroll to the second tip on the page: "Unix Tip of the Month: Utilize Extra Space on CD-Rs".
    Content:
Create a new folder in the Finder.
Drag everything you want to burn, up to 700 MB, into the folder.
Open Terminal and type cd ~/Desktop
Press the Enter key. This changes Terminal's active directory to your user's Desktop folder.
Type hdiutil makehybrid -o myburn.iso (There's a space after the o in iso, and myburn can be any name you choose) DON'T press Enter
    Switch to the "Finder"
Drag & drop the folder you created onto the Terminal window. Terminal should fill in the full path to the folder.
Press Enter. Enter key will then execute the command.
What you have done is used the hdiutil Unix command to create a hybrid disk image named myburn.iso (you can choose whatever name you like, in place of myburn, but use iso for the extension.
You should see the message "Creating hybrid image" in your Terminal window, as well as an indication of the task's progress.
When finished, you should see a disk image called myburn.iso on your Desktop.
You can use Disk Utility to burn this image, or you can type
    hdiutil burn ~/Desktop/myburn.iso in Terminal
Insert a blank CD-R when prompted, and then just wait until it's done.

  • Unable to burn readable discs

I am unable to burn CD-Rs properly. The disc gets burned, verifies fine and is readable on Macs. But I cannot mount such a disc on a Windows or Linux machine. Usually the disc spins a lot and is not recognised.
I use Disk Utility to create "DVD/CD master" images and then to burn. I have a feeling that the images are not standard ISO 9660 but I don't know how to check this.
So how can I create and burn images which are readable on non-Mac computers?
My filesystem is Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) and the drive is Pioneer DVD-RW DVDR-105.

b Burn a CD ...... Using the Finder
When you burn a CD in the Finder, Mac OS X creates a disc in "hybrid" format that can be read by most computers, including Windows computers.
    1. Insert blank CD.
    2. Drag folder or Disk Image (.dmg) onto the CD.
    3. As the CD is being processed, give it a name.
    4. Drag the CD to the Trash ....or....
    • Select/hilite the CD and go to..File>Burn disc...
    5. You now have a choice of burn speed... Default setting is...Maximum.
    • Select a speed less than the default, which is Maximum....
    6. Click on "Burn". (CD will be dis-mounted)
    7. When Burn is complete, CD will now mount and is now usable.

  • Unique title for MY_GREAT_DVD burned with Disk Utility

composed movie in Final Cut Express 4.0.1->sent to IMovie 09 for chapters->to IDVD 09->to Disk Utility for. img file before burning DVD. [BTW, had some "multiplex errors" until I took periods (decimal points) out of chapter marker titles].
Problem is that even though the file is named *.img in the finder the volume created is ALWAYS called "MYGREATDVD" and that's the title of the DVD icon after the actually DVD is inserted into drive.
Anyway to get the DVD to be named what I call it???

"MYGREATDVD" is the name of the DVD as assigned (by default) in iDVD.
However whenever I burn a disc image to Dvd-R, nine times out of ten I'll also use Roxio Toast. And here's where one is allowed to change the name. At least that's where I normally address this type of change/s. If you don't already own Toast, then one can also substitute apple's disc utility for this purpose as well.
Another option might be to go to the menu in iDvd, select Project, then Project Info, then in the top block, next to Disc Name:, type in your desired disk name. I hope this helps but if not just come on back.

  • Proper "Formatting" of second internal drive with Disc Utility??

Using a second internal HD for data storage, was formated 4 months ago with default settings from Disc Utility. When I called the drive manufacturer today about corrupted Photoshop files (10 in 4 months) occuring on this drive, they recommended that I backup, Erase and Format as MAC OS Extended "NOT" Journaled.
Before I start - any comments, recommendations??
Would "Journaled" or "Not Journaled" actually cause corruption in 150mb Photoshop files??

I'd run Disk Utility and have a look at the disks; I'd look to verify the volume structures.
Journaled HFS+ is the default for installations, too.
Formatting usually doesn't help with disk hardware that is going wonky. Bad blocks are bad blocks, and failing disks tend to have increasing numbers of bad blocks. Reformatting a failing disk "papers over" the bad blocks, at least until the next crop of bad blocks arises and corrupts something else.
Formatting does help if there's a corruption in the volume structure.
Would also look to off-load everything and either replace the disk with a new one (wonky disks aren't worth bothering with), and/or run a write-comparison test and pound on the drive some.
Journaling can be shut off on the fly; see the diskutil man page for details on the disableJournal knob.
I'd also try to determine if this is something specific to Photoshop, or if this is a more generic problem. Look also for patches for Photoshop, and do look to update whatever version of Mac OS X or Mac OS X Server is in use here.
There's no obvious mention of HFS+ and Journaling and Photoshop over at Adobe, either.

  • How to create a FAT32 partition that is primary instead of logical with disc utility?

I am trying to create a partition on an external drive, so I can use it as a hard drive for my XBOX 360. I already have data on the drive, and there is more data than I can back up. I have tried using disc utility to partition it and I use the MS-DOS FAT type, however when I plug in to my XBOX it doesnt recognize the drive, and wants to reformat the entire thing. I have read on other forums that the partition needs to be of the "primary" type instead of logical, but I cannot figure how to set it up that way. Any help would be great, thanks!

I found this blog post shortly after the first BootCamp beta was out. I successfully split mine into three partitions per the instructions. However, since Leopard now lets you live partition your disk, you can probably do the partitioning via Disk Utility instead of using diskutil in Terminal.

  • Hi, i have a lot of problems, artwork muddled and losing tracks, cannot download latest version of itunes, unable to burn onto disc. Can anyone help, i am not great with these things!!

Hi lots going wrong with my music library, artwork is muddled up and also losing tracks because of this, also unable to download latest version of itunes and finally i cannot burn my music to disc. i have an external hard drive and a fairly large library, around 30,000 on it. Any suggestions!!

Log in to the Developer forum. You will find instructions on how to install the lastest beta. Your problem is the beta you have installed has expired. All of them did on October 5; you will find hundreds of threads discussing this. If you have a beta it is assumed that you will continue as a beta tester, so a simple update using iTunes will not work.
If you no longer want to be a beta tester install the GM 7.0.2 by restoring from iTunes using DFU mode.

  • Can't play cd burned with disk utility

i have followed the the directions on duplicating a cd on this link:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DiskUtility/10.5/en/duh1945.html
but the cd that i burned is not recognized by itunes or a regular cd player. can anybody offer any insight into what i may be doing wrong? i have burned cds using itunes and have had no problems with them in my player or computer, but i wanted to use disk utility for cds that i don't want on my hard drive.
    cheers,
    greg

    gregod,
I ran across this sequence of instructions that may help when you are using Disk Utility to copy a disc:
    4. From the menubar select File->New->Disk image from disk...
    5. In the Convert window that appears select where you want to save the image - the Desktop is as good a place as any.
    6. Again, in the Convert window select DVD/CD Master from the Image Format drop down menu
    7. Click Save
I think the choice of DVD/CD Master needs to be made.
Hope this works. Let me know.
    Regards,
    Steve M.

  • Disk Error - Unable to fix with disk utility

My mac was acting a little wonky today - I noticed that some programs weren't shutting down when I tried to quit them, so I ran Onyx. Immediately I recieved the note that I needed to repair my start disk with the installation disk. So, I tried that. The disk utility was not able to repair it - The error I received was " Invalid catalog record type
    Volume check failed
    1HFS Volume Checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
I thought about purchasing Disk Warrior to try to repair it but I have no idea if it will even work on this type of error. I did free up quite a bit of space from my HD because I thought perhaps there wasn't enough free space and ran the disk utility again. received the same error. I am a bit technically challenged when it comes to trying to troubleshoot. I thought perhaps someone would be able to tell me if I should invest in DW or I should just replace the Hard Drive. It's only about 9 months old. Thanks so much.

That is a directory error. It can be fixed with software, but Disk Utility is not an Industrial-strength fixer. There is NO compelling reason to replace your hard drive hardware.
Disk Warrior is a File utility. It works very hard to collect all possible information about your files, build a new directory, and (only if you allow it) to replace the old directory with its new error-free directory. It is a good tool to have on hand, and well respected in this marketplace.
It is not sensitive to the type of error encountered -- it will use all available info to build a new directory from scratch. That will eliminate the error. I own and use Disk Warrior, and recommend it.
You should be careful about using 10.3 and older versions of ANY Utilities on 10.4 and later directories, as the directory format changed a bit with 10.4.
I got a card in the mail for a US$50 (plus US$12 for discs) offer good through 31 October 2009 for several Utilities including Tech Tool Pro (another alternative to Disk Warrior). You definitely want the bootable disc of any disk repair utility you buy. It generally takes about five minutes to boot up, but it leaves your hard drive completely available to be repaired.
I have no connection to this company and do not know if it is reputable. Their package requires 10.4, 10.5, or 10.6 and seems to be offered by Intego as a promotion for their Virus Barrier and other software.

  • Unable to burn with Superdrive (0x80020022)

    Hi,
I'd like to verify if this can be anything but HW failure before contacting the service center:
I've tried to burn DVD+R and -R disks couple of times without success. The burn process terminates with the error code found in this post title. The DiscRecording.log shows:
Finder: Burn started, Sun Aug 23 11:31:56 2009
Finder: Burning to DVD-R (RITEKG05) media with DAO strategy in MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-868 KB19 via ATAPI.
Finder: Requested burn speed was 2x, actual burn speed is 2x.
Finder: Burn underrun protection is supported, and enabled.
Finder: Burn failed, Sun Aug 23 11:33:11 2009
Finder: Burn sense: 4/09/04 Hardware Error, Head select fault
Finder: Burn error: 0x80020022 The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry.
    Any hints ?

    Hardware Error, Head select fault
That would be enough to convince me there was a probem worthy of a service center's attention.
