Unable to capture to external RAID drive FCP 7

Here are my specs:
Model Identifier: MacPro1,1
Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
Number Of Processors: 2
Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 1.33 GHz
Boot ROM Version: MP11.005C.B08
Running:
OS X 10.5.8
Final Cut Studio 3 (recently upgraded from Studio 1)
At the end of last year I had a problem with capturing and upon research it seemed to be that the most recent update of QuickTime was not compatible with Final Cut Pro 5, which was causing my machine to not be able to capture at all. So we upgraded to Final Cut Studio 3 (FCP7) and part of the problem was solved but an issue still remains.
For over 3 years we have been using an external Raid drive as a capture scratch and we still have over 5 TBs free. The Raid is connected by SCSI. Earlier last year I was able to capture to the Raid drive without any problems but now the capture will freeze whenever that is set as the capture scratch. If I set the internal drive as the capture scratch it captures without any issues.
The problem is that using the internal as the capture scratch can only be a short term solution. The drive is only so large and I have a problem with finder if I try to move files from the internal drive to the external. Finder freezes up and I can't even force quit properly. So being able to once again use the external as the main capture scratch is the only real solution. The external is fully functionally and communicating with the Mac.
Any help with resolving this would be appreciated!

Off the top of my head, because I haven't worked with SCSI in years--
"The problem is that using the internal as the capture scratch can only be a short term solution. Are you trying to move files while you have FCP open? The fact that simply moving files is giving you finder issues and freezing you up, says that all is not well with the scsi raid. You should not see that at all.
You might try powering down the mac and the raid, unplugging and letting the machine sit for a while to discharge the capacitors. Then try reseating the scsi card. (pull it out carefully and plug it back in.)
On another note, when you upgraded fcp, did you do a clean install?

As john noted, eventually that external is probably not going to be big enough, but it certainly is for now. The HD just needs enough capacity to cover the amount of data on your internal HD, not the internal HD's total capacity.
Format/partition the external as follows and you should be set to go:
    1. Connect the external HD to the MBP.
    2. Open Disk Utility on the MBP.
    3. Select the external HD in the left pane.
    4. Click on the Erase tab.
    5. Choose the Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
NOTE: if you want to zero the HD (which I always think is a good idea, but does take time), click on Security Options, click the button for Zero Out Data, click OK. The larger the HD, the longer this will take, in some cases several hours.
    6. Click on Erase and wait for the entire process to finish.
    7. Click the Partition tab.
    8. Click on Volume Scheme: and choose the number of partitions (just one in this situation).
    9. Click on the Options button (located underneath the Volume Scheme pane) and select GUID.
    10. Click Apply.
    11. Quit Disk Utility.
Backup your internal to the external. What application are you using to backup with? I highly recommend both SuperDuper! and CarbonCopyCloner.

  • Repair disk permissions for an external RAID drive?

    Hello,
We are able to repair disk permissions on the hard drive, but can it be done on an external SCCI RAID drive? Is there software that is recommended that will repair and fix issues such as if the RAID drive was improperly removed without ejecting the drive? Or is that not needed?
    Thanks,
    Jordan

DiskWarrior repairs your directory, throws in some limited optimization (iPhoto's open in half the time is about all really), so if your "directory is out of order" it's not that big a deal really.
It's good to have on the shelf if you have a lot of Mac's, but ever since Tiger rolled around it seemed a lot of directory problems have disappeared on single user machines. It's pretty expensive for it's limited options.
With a RAID O (stripe) setup you should Disk Utility Erase w/Zero before setting up the RAID and laying data down. (in fact this is wise for all new drives at least once)
RAID O's should always be cloned (in the case of a boot RAID O) or backed up quite often because if one drive goes the whole set with data is lost.
Mirroring (RAID 1) is only necessary for extremely valuable one time data captures where a hard drive failure would be awlful. It doesn't make a good backup because any corruption, mistakes etc get immediatly written to the second drive.
Using automated cloning and backup software is better like (search Apple) DeJaVu. Auto clone the whole boot drive once a week and auto backup certain folders of files nightly.
Since cloning I haven't really too much need for drive maintainance software, if my RAID goes down for a data reason, (hasn't yet in 2 years of 24/7 operation) I simply option boot off the clone and repair/recover/reverse clone. I'm done in a hour, I even go out to eat or something while it's reverse cloning.
A good piece of software to have is (search Apple) OnyX, it's automation section will do a lot of cleanup and fixing certain things. Good to run it about once a month.
To find out more about cloning, visit Carbon Copy Cloner forums, they have donationware software too.

  • Unable to see my external hard drive

    Hi
I've been sorting out my external hard drive and deleting numerous files. Suddenly a few small windows popped up showing a progress bar.
I am now unable to view the files from the External Hard Drive. I have tried rebooting the system a few times and I managed to see the files using Spotlight. But still,, no files shown on the drive. The Trash also shows "Bin Full" but it is empty. Any ideas? Please

Ok if disk utility was able to verify the drive I doubt there is any problem.. are you trying to open a TM backup??
You need to mount the sparsebundle then check the actual info inside the bundle.
Don't use disk warrior.. if the disk has verified then unless you deliberately deleted files there is nothing that is going to do.
Pondini has a lot of stuff about getting access to the sparsebundle.
    http://pondini.org/TM/17.html
But if you have copied info to the TC that is now gone.. and the disk is ok.. I am not sure.. the TC will not have deleted the files itself.

  • Successfully upgraded to 3.3 Unable to backup to external hard drive. Aperture closes unexpectedly without error message.

Upgrade to 3.3 was successful. My library is stored on an external hard drive and I have vaults stored on different hard drives. Aperture seems to be functiong OK but I am unable to backup to my external hard drives. The application seems to go through the process of upgrading the library again and quits unexpectedly at step seven without an error message. Anyone come up with a work around before Apple sorts this bug out?

What do you mean when you say "unable to backup to my external drives"?  Are you updating your Vaults?  If so, are you able to create a new Vault?  If you are, create them and confirm that they work.  If they work, delete the old Vaults and keep the new ones.

  • HV20 Capture to External Firewire Drive

I'm here again, trying to help a friend who live in another country.
She says, "It seems that I can't capture footage from my camera (HV20) directly on to the external hard drive as my camera doesn't allow another firewire or
USB to be connected to the computer at the same time."
Any reason she would think this?
I know she's using a pre-unibody MacBook Pro with Final Cut Express. I don't know the details of the specs on hers (I will be asking her about that).
But shouldn't she be able to capture to an external Firewire drive? I'm thinking that when she plugs in the camera, the drive is no longer recognized. I'm in the process of getting more details from her.
    Any help is very appreciated.

Of course she should be able to do it.
It should have 2 FW sockets, so she could use one for the camera and one for the FW HD.
Even if it had only one, she could daisy-chain computer, FW HD and camera.
A third possibility is to capture direct to the MBP's HD and then copy the media across to the FW HD. The media from a one hour tape can be copied in less than 10 minutes so it is no big problem.
P.S. I have a Canon HV20 and it never complains when I have 2 FW HDs and a USB 2.0 connected to my iMac!

  • Capturing to External Hard Drive

I am editing my video on a MacBook Pro with a 120GB hard drive which is not anywhere near big enough. However I have an external hard drive that is 500GB that I am trying to capture the video to. I set it up in the Final Cut system preferences but when I go to capture now it says allocating disk space and then freezes. I think the problem is that I am connecting to the drive via USB as opposed to firewire. But if Im importing video at the same time through the only firewire port how do I avoid this? Thanks.

Re: External HD ports: eject the drive, power off, switch the cable to the adjacent port, power up the drive then see if the computer recognises the drive. If it does both ports work. If it doesn't...
If ports are okay (it seems cables are fine as both camera and drive are currently recognised via firewire aren't they?). Shutdown laptop. power everything off and then power all back on and then startup. Make sure camera is in right mode and startup FCE.
If that doesn't work just out of curiosity you could open up iMovie and see if your camera is recognised through the HD there.
You could try connecting the camera directly via firewire to the computer and reminding us that it works that way (you were using USB earlier were you not?)
    Keep us posted.
    (ps I'm off to bed!)

  • Unable to connect to external hard drive

Have just switched from a macbook to macbook pro, transferred all data etc via firewire with no problem. I have recently purchased an extreme base station and have ben using this with an imac and the mac book. I have a usb external drive and a printer connected to the base station via a usb hub. Both have worked flawlessley over the wireless network with the macbook. However, I can't get the new macbook pro to see the external hard drive, I have checked the automatically mount disk box etc, all to no avail.
    Any ideas??

I have successfully connected two drives via a USB HUB, which worked flawlessly. I am however unable to connect another drive of a different brand and size and get it to be recognized. That drive is a Lacie bid drive ( 2 terabytes). It looks like the drive itself is an important factor. I tried every thing and this big drive would not mount.

  • Unable to keep my external hard drive connected to my computer for backup with Time Machine.

I am using an external LaCie hard drive to backup my computer.  In the last month or so I have noticed that when my computer is in the sleep mode for sometime the hard drive disconnects from my computer.  I than get an error message that tells me that I have failed to disconnect the hard drive device before turning it off.  Do I have a problem and if so is there a fix for the problem.

    Hi,
I have a similar question. I have backed up my external hard drive through my computer, onto my TC. When I go into TM, it doesn't show the external hard drive unless it is connected to the computer. Can I access the info from the external hard drive that is on the TC if I don't have the hard drive plugged in? If so, how can I do that?
    Thanks,
    Bernadette

  • External Raid drives not on desktop

I have just installed OS X and now my external SoftRaid Drives do not show up on the desktop. Any suggestions on how to get these to show up. I have contacted SoftRaid and they are trying to help but no luck so far.
These drives worked fine with Tiger but not after installation of OS X

do you see those drives in Finder? type shiftcommandG in Finder and enter
/Volumes in the popup. Do you see the drives listed in /Volumes? Also, do they show up in the sidebar?
Also, make sure that external drives are set to show up on the desktop in Finder preferences.

  • Unable to backup to external hard drive with new Mac Mini

I have been using a 1TB iOmega MiniMax external hard drive to backup my Mac Mini that was running on OS X 10.6.8.  I recently replaced the Mac Mini with a newer model running on OS X 10.9.5.  I successfully recovered all my files from the backup hard drive onto the new Mac Mini.  However, since then I am not able to   do either an automatic Time Machine backup or a manual backup.  I'm wondering if I need to update the iOmega MiniMax driver to be compatible with the newer OS X.  So far I have not been able to locate any updated drivers.  The new Mac Mini is able to recognize the old data that were previously backed up, but will not complete a new backup.  Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks for the help.  When I got the new Mac Mini, I was able to restore all my files from the iOmega HD backup.  But since then each time I try a TM backup I see the in work wheel spinning (in Finder) but no backup is made.  No error messages are given.  I will try the trouble shooting list you sent.  Thanks again.

  • Logic Pro X - Unable to save to External Lacie Drive

    Hello All
I need some help troubleshooting an issue I have using Logic Pro X and a Lacie D2 Thunderbolt drive. Every time I attempt to save a file to the drive I get the following error message:
This drive used to be connected to my MacBookPro but I have since transferred it to a new iMac. I checked the drive by right clicking and made sure the permissions were set correctly in the 'get info' pane (I have full permissions both under my user name and administrator) and also checked the permission info afterwards using Disk Utility which confirmed I have access.
The issue only appears to occur using LPX as I have successfully saved docs to the drive in Pages without problem. If anyone can help me solve this it would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks.

After some looking around on Google using the search string 'Mac OS X External Drive Authentication', I believe I may have solved this issue. Should anyone else experience the same difficulties, this might provide an answer.
If you move an external hard drive from one Mac to another, it you need to re-apply read/write privileges for the new machine to access data on said external drive.
To do that, try the following:
    1. Right-click on the hard drive you wish to authenticate (or Command-I).
    2. Select 'Get Info' and at the bottom and locate the Sharing & Permissions tab,
    3. Click on that and you will see a list of names and privileges. Once there, change the settings to read/write for the new account on the machine you are working from.
    4. Click on the little gear icon below that and select 'Apply to enclosed items' from the pop up menu This will apply the changes to all your folders and you should then be able to access and save the data without the warning pop up from my first post appearing.
This next part applied to me but might not apply to your situation but I'll mention it just for information. Should the gear icon be greyed out, click on the small padlock icon to the right to unlock it, that should then make the gear icon accessible.
After that you have to click 'okay' to apply the authentication changes. It will then take a few mins to apply the new privileges to the files on the drive.

  • Sound out of sync when capturing to External Hard Drive

I've been trying to capture my short film footage (5 - 60 min. mini dv tapes) on FCP without the audio getting WAY out of sync. All the footage is off. Any ideas? Here's some more info: I capture the whole 60 minutes of the tape at once. (And then I was gonna split it up later.) It all looks fine through the LCD monitor as it plays, but when I look at the footage after capturing, it's way off. I have a G-Raid, 500 gig ex. h/d that is empty. I have a PowerBook G4.
Can you capture it on your external h/d without this happening? Or do you have to capture on your internal? (which I believe, I don't have enough memory there.
    Help, please, please, please.
    - Michael

The best solution would be to use a DV capture utility and then import the resulting file(s) into final cut.
Aplle itself offers capture utilities, which can be found in the Developer Firewire SDK:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305924
You need a free Developer account and to download the SDK there. After installation you will find a new folder on your harddrive called "Developer"
There are several capture utilities in the program section of the SDK. You want to use the one called "VirtualDV". It´s very simple, but powerful though. It does capture without sync loss, compared to capturing via the Quicktime framework, like Final Cut and iMovie do. It simply grabs the raw DV stream coming from the Firewire interface.
After the capturing you have a Quicktime readable raw DV file, which easily can be imported to be worked with in any DV capable software.

  • 17" MacBook Pro freezes after Capture to external hard drive!!!!!! HELP!!

Ok, so i just got my new MacBook Pro and Final Cut Studio last week, and i was so excited, until this happened. I was trying to log and capture a clip to my 500GB LaCie Big Disk and everything seemed to be going fine until the clip got to the end of it's alloted time and then the computer just froze. When I closed the lid and let the laptop sleep and opened it again the clip is in place and everything seems fine. I tried capturing then w/ the LaCie plugged into the FW8oo port and my miniDV Deck plugged into the FW4oo, and it froze again after capture and then worked fine after closing the lid. Thinking I was crowding my Fire Wire bus I hooked up an external USB 2.0 drive and my deck to the fire wire , but the same thing happened. So then I tried capturing to my internal and it worked fine. I've captured to an external on my 17" iMac G5 w/ Final Cut HD for years and never had a problem. Any tips? This closing the lid thing just isn't going to work.
    MacBook Pro 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

nope, david is right on the mark. powermacs with one firewire bus choke like this. i can't understand why apple continues to design with one firewire bus but i'm not a designer. anyone, ANYONE who uses firewire harddrives and firewire tape machines/cameras for editing NEEDS to invest in a seperate sort of firewire card (pick your flavor) and then we'd see this behavior go away. then there will be those that will whine "this never happened before!" it's happening now, firewire cards a cheap insurance against these issues.

  • Dropping frames capturing to external hard drive

When I attempt to capture video from my Powerbook G4 using my Lacie External drive as my Scratch Disk, I get the 'dropped frames' error message. However, when I capture through my IMac Desktop G5 onto the very same Lacie External drive I have no problems. Both the Powerbook G4 and the IMac Desktop G5 have about 20G of free space on each of their 80G Hard Drives. Any suggestions? Many Thanks!

There is a good chance that your problem is caused by
using the HD in USB 2 mode.
Most people consider USB 2 is unsuitable for video
    editing.
DV needs a drive capable of a consistent high speed
that can only be provided by FW.
Although the claimed speeds of USB 2 appear to be as
high, they are not because they are the MAXIMUM
speeds achieved and are not sustained. In the real
world USB 2 is barely half the speed of FW.
When using your PowerBook you could try
daisy-chaining your camera to the HD to the computer
    - by FW of course.
    Ian.
    Thanks! Great Advice!
