Unable to check usage on iPad  (Settings General Usage)

Hello,
My iPad mini won't allow me to check how much space I have left but I was notified (forgot how) that there was not much space left.
I originally thought that it kept crashing because my iPad wasn't updated to the latest version so I downloaded it and it still didn't solve the problem.
Every time I go to settings > General > usage I instantly crash and go back to the home screen.   I don't really know what other information to give :\ .
I'm thinking maybe a hard reset would fix the problem but I'm not really sure how to back up everything that's already on my iPad since it's greater than the storage given for iCloud.  (Not really sure how to back up in  general)
So, if maybe a hard reset it the way to go -- could someone maybe lead me in the direction of how to hard reset and get all my apps back easily?  (Instead of writing everything down and searching them up and downloading later?)
Thank you :).

Hi AmishCake,
Unfortunately, this method didn't work.    My photos and videos take up practically no space as I only have around 15 photos and no videos but I will move them onto the computer.
Any other suggestions for the usage problem?

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

  • HT4972 No software update section  found on iPad/settings/general-

I'm trying to update my iPad software, but when I go to Settings/General- there is no software update section like on other iPads. My software desperately needs to be updated, but I don't know how to do this manually. Any help would be great. Right now my iPad shows I'm in version 4.3.5.  Thanks.

  • Since the IOS7 is installed i cant delete apps. 1/I hold the app till it wiggles but the cross does not appear; 2/ i could not delete it through i-tunes; 3/ i tried resetting the ipad-settings/general/reset/all then i get a restrictions password request?

Since the IOS7 is installed i cant delete apps. I tried the following with no result:
    1/I hold the app till it wiggles but the cross does not appear;
    2/ i could not delete it through i-tunes;
3/ i tried resetting the ipad through "settings/general/reset/all" then i get a restrictions password request whih i have no clue what it is (its not my unlock code)?
Is this a bug related to IOS 7 - I just installed the latest update also with no effect.
(I'm new to apple so any simple to understand advice is appreciated as my kids have added so many apps i can't add my music)

It appears that you have restrictions turned on in settings that prohibit app deletion. Is your iPad a personal possession or does it below to the company you work for?

  • HT4623 I go to settings general to do software update and that isn't an option

I'm trying to update the operating system on my iPad.  I looked on apple.com and it says to go to settings. General. Update software. I do not have an updater software option. Now what do I do?

You probably don't have the option to update your device directly from the iPad (Settings>General>Software Update) because your iOS version is likely below iOS 5.x. The option to do OTA (over-the-air) updates was added beginning with iOS 5.x Check your current iOS version:Settings>General>About and look under "Version". I'll bet it's probably below 5.x.
In this case, connect your iPad to your syncing PC and do the update through iTunes.

  • HT204370 I have purchased movie hunger games but unable to download on my iPad 2. All of sudden it show error sigh and says not enough place?

2 days back I purchased movie hunger games on my iPad 2 32g  and I paid and got the reciept ,when I tried to tap to download it shows error sign and says 'delete pictures and videos ... To start I barely have much stored still I took my pictures and deleted some serials which I had purchased . Still it doesn't work .
iTunes shud pay and refund money o me or fix the problem . Last year it happened with movie ' Jane ayre which I purchased could never download .

How much free space do you have on your iPad : Settings > General > About > Available ? If you've bought the HD version then (if I'm looking at the correct version of the film) it appears to be 5.2 gig that you will need, if it's SD then you will need 2.13 gig.

  • Why does iTunes tell me that I have tons of memory available (30 GB) on my iPad (when I plug it in to my computer), but when I check my storage directly on the iPad (under Settings/General/Storage), I only have 3GB?

This is driving me nuts.  I need to "rent" some flicks for a trip, but my iPad (64GB) tells me I have insufficient memory.  Checking under Settings/General/Usage, I find 3GB free.  I hook it up to my computer (iTunes) and clear out pretty much everything (audio, video, extra apps, etc) and iTunes then tells me I have 30GB available.  Yes, I hit apply and the darn thing synches just fine.  Disconnect and look back at the iPad, and viola - only 3GB available.  ARRRRGGGHHHH!

Sounds like you should restore your iPad.  For one thing, that will bring it up to current iOS rev (6.1.2).  For another, that should clean out any junk and further make sure the two numbers you're referring to agree.
By the way, a viola is a musical instrument in the violin family.  The word you're looking for is voila

  • My iphone has recently loss about 10G of memmory. I check through settings/general/usage, all apps I had add up to less than 2G. I used to be able to take around 2hrs of video and now I can't take any. Can anyone help? Thanks

My iphone has recently loss about 10G of memmory. I check through settings/general/usage, all apps I had add up to less than 2G. I used to be able to take around 2hrs of video as I like to record down whatever happening in front of my car when I'm driving. I delete the videos everyday ifn nothing special. It seems that lately when I deleted the videos, they're not removed from the phone's memmory.
I check form setting/general/usage : all my apps add up to less than 2G. In itune, it shows all memmary is under the catagory "other". Is there any way I can access this "other" memmory to see what's in it and delete the things I don't want to regain the loss memmory?
    Thanks

You could always try restoring, although maybe someone else on here has a better idea.
Hopefully by posting this, it will bump up and someone with more iPhone troubleshooting experience might chime in.
As for the videos - interesting! Do you have the iPhone on one of those window holders, or do you hold it in your hand since that might ironically distract you, unless you've gotten very good at it!

  • HT4623 I am trying to update my iPad,but when I go to settings general I do not have an update software to click on...... Only about then usage?

I am trying to update my iPad 2,but hen I go to settings/ general, there is no update software to click on!  It goes from about to usage?

There are countless posts about this.  There's a problem at Apple's end and has been so for several days.
However, I have no trouble updating using itunes on my computer and later syncing to my device.

  • IPad 1 (Settings/General/Usage) = crash

Little issue when I go to Settings/General/Usage it crashes the settings app.
It did work but now I have 10gigs worth of apps on it just crashes back to the main screen.
    Anyone else ?

I made some progress on this. Backed up my iPhone. Then set all sync options to off and synced. Still had the issue! T
So then did a full reset so nothing was on the phone. Then did a restore from the back up... Key thing is here that during the restore process, when it said starting to sync apps, I hit the X in iTunes to cancel this part. So now I had my iPhone with all contacts, text messages, email, calendar, camera photos, etc. but no music, photo albums or apps. Settings/general/usage works fine. Synced up my music and photo albums and still works! Synced up a few choice apps and still works!
I noticed that before when it didn't work I had about 0.9gb of "other" data. After this with it working I have about 0.5 in "other" data. I suspect an some app is the culprit here and even after deleting it from the phone it's leaving some "other" data that the usage cant step through and crashes on. Maybe it's something like Dropbox as that allowed storage of documents as favourites on the phone, but who knows.
Anyway, don't know what the iPad is like as I don't have one. This worked for me. Hope it helps somewhat!

How to Upgrade to iOS 7
The iOS 7.0 update requires around 2.5 GB of storage space, so if your iPad is almost full, you may need to clear up some space. You can check your available space in Settings -> General -> Usage.
There are two ways to upgrade to iOS 7: You can use your Wi-Fi connection, or you can connect your iPad to your PC and update through iTunes. We'll go over each method.
    To upgrade using Wi-Fi:
Note: If your iPad's battery is under 50%, you will want to plug it into your charger while performing the update.
    Go into the iPad's Settings.
Locate and tap "General" from the menu on the left.
The second option from the top is "Software Update". Tap this to move into the update settings.
Tap "Download and Install". This will start the upgrade, which will take several minutes and will reboot your iPad during the process. If the Download and Install button is grayed out, trying clearing up some space. The space required by the update is mostly temporary, so you should gain most of it back after iOS 7 is installed.
Once the update is installed, you may have to run through the initial steps of setting up your iPad again. This is to account for new features and settings.
    To upgrade using iTunes:
First, connect your iPad to your PC or Mac using the cable provided when you purchased your device. This will allow iTunes to communicate with your iPad.
You will also need the latest version of iTunes. Don't worry, you will be prompted to download the latest version when you launch iTunes. Once it installs, you may be asked to setup iCloud by logging into your iTunes account. If you have a Mac, you may be prompted on whether or not you want to enable the Find my Mac feature.
Now you are ready to begin the process:
If you upgraded iTunes earlier, go ahead and launch it. (For many, it will launch automatically when you plug in your iPad.)
Once iTunes is launched, it should automatically detect that a new version of the operating system exists and prompt you to upgrade to it. Choose Cancel. Before updating, you will want to manually sync your iPad to make sure everything is up to date.
After canceling the dialog box, iTunes should automatically sync with your iPad.
If iTunes doesn't automatically sync, you can manually do it by selecting your iPad within iTunes, clicking on the File menu and choosing Sync iPad from the list.
After your iPad has been synced to iTunes, select your iPad within iTunes. You can find it on the left side menu under Devices.
From the iPad screen, click on the Update button.
After verifying that you want to update your iPad, the process will begin. It takes a few minutes to update the operating system during which time your iPad may reboot a few times.
After updating, you may be asked a few questions when your device finally boots back up. This is to account for new settings and features.
     Cheers, Tom
