Unable to choose a friend's .Mac username to add to buddy list
I'm having trouble trying to chat with a friend who has a .mac username.
I have an AIM username (used to have .mac while it was still free), and a neighbor's is [email protected]
I have her entry in Address Book (although with her username listed as AIM since .Mac isn't a choice), and have exchanged emails with her, but her name is always grayed out in iChat's buddy list, and neither I nor she are able to initiate a chat conversation, even just text chat.
If I try to start a chat, I can type her username, but I don't have a choice between AIM or .Mac in the popup sheet -- I can only select AIM.
I've tried quitting iChat, deleting the com.apple.iChat.SubNet.plist file, then starting iChat again. I've also checked that all the relevant ports are open and that we're not in each other's Blocked Users lists.

With me having an AIM account, and when I select New Chat With Person..., I won't be able to select .Mac as the service when it asks for her username... correct?
In Address Book, when I try to add her .mac username on her card, I don't have a choice of .mac -- I can choose AIM, Jabber, MSN, ICQ and Yahoo.
As far as I can tell, my old .mac username is still active, as I can make an account in iChat and log in. But, that didn't help either (already tried it before starting this thread).
I've got other buddies already who are on .mac accounts themselves, and I haven't had this problem with them.

Everything is syncked happily under the Icloud, but with "Messages" replacing Ichat, I endup with an empty Buddy list.

IN the Window menu do you have an item for "Buddies" with the CMD + 1 keystrokes listed ?
IF so go to Messages > Preferences > General section and untick the item that Gathers the "Accounts" to one list.
Now from the Window Menu you should have individual CMD + # keystrokes listed fro as many Account (Screen Names and IDs) as are logged in.
Can you see them ?

I have a regular post for the top 3 or 4 fixes for that 9808 error. Obviously you are going to skip #1, since you've already tried it. Let me know how you get on with the next 2.
The top 3 fixes to itunes error 9808 seem to be
1) Go to Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > Advanced, make sure that SSL 3.0 is checked and TLS 1.0 is checked. Also under Security make sure that the “Check for server certificate revocation (requires restart)” is unchecked. Then click ok and fire up iTunes.
2) The culprit was Norton. The users are set up as Admin and Standard. I have Parental Controls turned on in both Vista as well as Norton. Admin users had no problems connecting to iTunes. Standard users would get the error. I had to go to Norton’s Personal Firewall and add the program “iTunes Helper.exe” and set the option to “Allowed” (”iTunes.exe should already be in the Allowed category.) in order for the standard users to be able to connect.
3) close iTunes if you have it open right now. Then go to C:/Documents and Settings/username/Local Settings/Application Data/Apple Computer/iTunes. Delete or cut the preferences.xml file which contains your iTunes preferences. Then go to C:/Documents and Settings/username/Application Data/Apple Computer/iTunes and delete or move the preferences.xml file. For Mac users, there is only one file you must delete or move a to a new location and is located at User > Library > Preferences > com.apple.itunes.plist. Restart iTunes and it will recreate those two (or one) files with the default settings. Feel free to set your preferences back to what they were and then connect to the iTunes store and enjoy!
And #4, see if you can get into the iTS from a different windows admin account on the same PC. -
Hi I have just opened my brand new Master collection CS4 for Mac and have successfully loaded everything onto my brand new Macbook. I have just tried to open the AE software with no luck! the animation at the bottom of the screen on the icon starts to flash but then nothing. i tried opening Photoshop and On location and had no problem opening any of the other software in the collection, it just seems to be AE and the one piece of software i bough the collection for. I don't think there is a problem with my spec's on my Macbook and i have more then enough space on my HD. I am running Mac OS X version 10.6.2 i don't know if this might have something to do with the problem. anyone have any idea what i can do?

Try applying the 9.0.2 update. Choose any other Adobe product that launches and go to the Help->Updates menu. That will launch the updater and grab the patches. Many products needed to be patched to work well with 10.6.2 so you'll want to grab them all.

TS3274 Unable to choose books by author after IBooks upgrade
I have just upgraded my IBooks on my IPad 1 (iOS5.1.1). Now if I am in the browse mode I am unable to choose books to purchase. Each time I click on an author I am asked to click on author to see books. I have tried removing IBooks from my IPad and reloading it and still have the same issue. Since I am using an IPad1 iOS5.1.1 is the most up to date operating system I can put on so I can't try upgrading to iOS6.0. Is there a work around for this problem?
There are a few categorical places one must visit in order to synchronize iBooks for Mac with IOS iBooks. There is no need to remove the iBook for Mac application.
System Preferences > iCloud > Documents and Data is enabled
IOS Settings > iBooks > Sync Collections (enabled) and optionally Sync Bookmarks (enabled)Assumption that iCloud is enabled on the IOS device with documents and data enabled

Unable to choose PRINT WIDE AREA on EPSON printer 740i after upgrading
After upgrading to 10.4.5 i was unable to choose the print area in the page set up window. I use an EPSON 740, i had problems trying to print at the begining but solved them (luckily!). The print area is an option i use alot! because the print margin is bigger than the normal. I'm a graphic designer and i don't want to change my printer, it worked PERFECTLY with 10.3.... What can i do?
OK! So the Mac has the drivers. One small step.
Bear in mind please that I do not have that printer. On the Brother that I struggled with, the trick was to reset it and get it to print out the default settings. (Instructions I found on the Brother site.) Included in the printout was the printer's IP - 192.168.2.24.
I then configured the Macs to find the printer. In 10.8.2: System Preferences / Print and Scan / + / IP
But the first step was to get the printer to cough up the settings. Perhaps your manual has this info? -
Hi, I am using my icloud on my iphone but am unable to find it on my mac book pro. It's not under my system preferences like it shows under the setup. Can I download it again? Or something. I just need to backup some files on my computer and am unable.
The minimum requirement for iCloud is Lion 10.7.5 (Mavericks preferred): the iCloud Preference Pane does not appear on earlier systems - the MobileMe pane appears on Lion and earlier but is now non-functional - you cannot now open or access a MobileMe account.
To make use of iCloud you will have to upgrade your Mac to Lion or Mavericks, provided it meets the requirements.
The requirements for Lion are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
2GB of memory
OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
7GB of available space
Lion is available in the Online Apple Store ($19.99). Mountain Lion (10.8.x) is also available there at the same price but there seems little point as the system requirements are the same for Mavericks (10.9.x) - which is free - unless you need to run specific software which will run on Mountain Lion only.

I originally posted this problem in a way that didn't reflect that I bought the iTunes songs that I am trying to transfer from a Mac to a PC, so the post was removed. Please note I am not doing anything illegal. I bought the songs using iTunes gift certificates, but didn't know how to use the iTunes store and know next to nothing about technology, so my friend created a playlist for me on her Mac, it is under her name, but she used my gift certificates to purchase the songs, so I paid for the music. So, here's my problem (and take into account I am not technically savvy). I use my iPod nano every day and have an extensive playlist, but my iPod nano is synched with a friend's Mac and under her account, and she has moved out of the area I live in. I downloaded iTunes for Window (7) onto my PC and opened my own account. How do I transfer my playlist from my iPod nano under my friend's Mac account (and there's no way to contact her) to my PC and my own iTunes account? I was told to first "unsynch" my iPod from her Mac using Senuti or Export on my PC, but I cannot find a free version of either program, and don't want to download a free program from a website that may be unreliable. From there, I'm totally lost. So, I basically want to know if this can be done, because I have to hire a technician at my local Apple store to do this whole process for me (I'm terrified of losing my playlist) and want to keep the costs down (they charge $40 per half hour and money is tight for me). I also want to back up my playlist, and looked into creating a Cloud account, but it says to synch my iPod with Cloud first, and I don't dare to try that on my own, so I guess I'll have to pay for the techs to do it. Is there another way to store my playlist, such as a flash drive? Still, I don't dare to touch anything on my iPod without face-to-face technical support. I have stopped using Firefox as nothing I have done has fixed this problem. I have tried shutting down Firefox and rebooting it, I cleared all my add-ons and then added adblock back (that's the only one) but it still doesn't work. I've deleted large files so that I have more space - I can't think of anything else that will work. I have spoken to four of my friends with Macs and they are all having the same problem with Firefox since Mavericks.
Hi thanks very much for your reply. I did a few things like delete my add-ons and I don't have the problem of the disappearing cursor (sounds like a Sherlock Holmes story) any more but it seems to have been a mac issue as there were many complaints on the Apple forums of the cursor disappearing since the Mavericks OS and not just in Firefox but in multiple programs. Looks like they've fixed it somehow!

So basically I've been living computer-less for 8 months now, doing everything on my iPad 2. I want the iOS 5 update so my iPad will be more independent and not having a computer will be less of a problem. Can I update on a friend's Mac/pc without syncing my iPad to their computer? I can't lose all my data, it's all my contacts photos music and school work for the past months. Also I'm studying abroad so losing everything would be even worse considering I'd have to wait months to figure it out. Help!!

Your description of the issue is not clear:
What format, bit depth and color was your original file "from the net"? It sounds like it was a Color Indexed GIF, which would cause what you are describing.
In the Macintosh Finder, select said "net image" and do a Get Info on it (Command+i). When the Info box appears in the Finder, take a screen shot and upload it here by using the little camera icon in the Reply Editor in the forum's web interface.
If the image is a 256-color GIF, remember the rule: GIGO = garbage in, garbage out. -
