Unable to close tabs

Hi,
Recently, tonight, I've noticed issues trying to close tabs. Clicking the 'x' does not work, going to file - > close tab, nor does Ctrl+W. I think earlier I had to open the task manager to shut down the program.
Extensions/add-ons I am running are personas, Norton IPS, Norton toolbar, and Adblock Plus 1.31. I am running Windows 7 on a 3 months old laptop. All updates should be current.
The only thing I have installed tonight is Google Earth. That might have been a reinstall... or an over install. I actually noticed some issues with that earlier as well but I can't seem to remember them

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. First, disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, monitor, and Ethernet, if applicable. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account that has the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, perhaps including wireless networking on certain Macs. If you usually connect to the Internet via WiFi, and it doesn’t wohrk in safe mode, connect using an Ethernet cable. If you can’t do that, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and perform a safe login, as follows: Enter your credentials at the login screen, then hold down the shift key and click the “Log in” button. Keep holding the key until the menu bar appears. In this mode, your login items, among other things, won’t load.
In safe mode, test again. Same problem(s) now?
After testing, reboot (if you booted in safe mode) or log out/log in (if you performed a safe login) as usual.

  • Why am I unable to close tabs all of a sudden?

I had a lot of trouble installing the latest Firefox update. It finally worked after 7 or 8 attempts. Now I can open new tabs but clicking "close" or right clicking and selecting "close tab" no longer works.

I'm not sure if it's the same problem, but it seems related to a Website's code. After login out of the system, the tab is no longer available or accessible. It doesn't show the page. I can only click on the tab itself (trying to close it through the menu or the X icon), but the page does not appear. Not even with the Group Tabs add-on the tab is visible. It just skips it as if it did not exist. I'm using FF 4b portable.

  • Unable to close tabs after a new tab is opened automatically and suddenly

Recently, after the latest update, this problem has been occurring quite often. When i am using multiple tabs, the browser will suddenly open a new tab automatically. The new tab is empty. When i try to close the tab, it cannot be closed. i tried closing other tabs that i was using but they too cannot be close. i have to restart the browser and the problem will be solved. But the problem will resurface after awhile of using multiple tabs again. The problem is more frequent when i am using more tabs.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

  • In Firefox 31.0 a bug makes the browser freeze, and then I can't close tabs anymore, what may solve this?

Good afternoon. With the newest update of Firefox for PC (31.0), I have a problem that occurs almost every time I use the browser.
When trying to close a tab, it sometimes cause the browser to freeze during one minute.
Then a dialog-box appears on the screen. It says that the script "chrome://browser/content/tabbrowser.xml:2004" may be busy.
I can choose between two buttons in this dialog-box.
"Continue" which keeps the script running, in theory; though it just closes the dialog-box, makes the browser freeze again, and then the same dialog-box shows up.
"Stop the script" which ends the freeze; but then I'm unable to close tabs (I can still close the browser).
I also noticed that, when the freeze occurs, the content of the tab I tried to close changes to "New Tab".
When I restart the browser, I am able to close tab again, until the freeze shows up again.
The problem started to appear only when I updated Firefox to the 31.0 version (and I didn't add any browser extension in the meanwhile).
Does anyone have an idea of what I could do to avoid the problem? Thank you very much and have a good day!

In the immediate future you can try noscript or flashblock addons to block that script.
However upon more research in searching the current Firefox codebase: [http://dxr.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/search?q=tabbrowser.xml&case=false] it seems to be referenced in there, but I do not see a reference to the port associated. The port is usually used for media. I would not know how to start to troubleshoot this, but are there any consistent steps/webpages that cause this to start?
Does this happen in Safe Mode, please see [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]]? And does it happen in a fresh install?

  • How to close tabs that will not close?

After being on several sites I am unable to close tabs that I am done with. Started a couple weeks ago.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes
It is also possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the sessionstore.js file and possible sessionstore-##.js files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

  • Unable to close windows

I didn't find any other threads on this problem, so evidently it's just my system?
A few days ago I installed the latest Tiger security patch (2007-009), Java 6 update and Quicktime 7.3.1 update.
Since then I am unable to close ANY window in Safari. Safari seems to work fine otherwise. I can browse and open tabs and windows, and websites can create new windows, but then I can not close ANY of the windows. I can close tabs but not windows. When I click the Close button, nothing happens, and when I use ⌘+W, nothing happens.
So, after a while of surfin' the 'net, I end up with a bunch of open windows of various sizes. When I re-open Safari, I get one new window with the Home tab.
I just recently began using Safari again, because it's 3x faster than Firefox on my iBook, but now I've got this problem.
    Any ideas?
I will likely be calling Apple Support today, although I hate to, as I've found them to be very unknowledgeable and unhelpful in the past.

    Hi,
Go to these 2 locations to see if you have any 3rd party extensions and move anything present in them onto your Desktop to deactivate them:
    /Users/YourUsername/Library/InputManagers/
    /Library/InputManagers/
Restart Safari to pick up the change. If it works now, you can try moving the items back one by one until you find the culprit.
If that doesn't help, or you don't have those folders, one quick test you can do to help narrow down things is to try Safari in another user account. This will help us to know whether your problem is local to your account or system wide. If you don't have another account you can use System Preferences -> Accounts -> \[+\] to create a test one (and \[-\] to remove it if needed)

  • I have no Close Tab entry in my File. This results in closing all of firefox. How can I just close a tab?

Since I downloaded your new 4 ---- I am unable to close one Tab while keeping another one open. The reason this occurs is that in the File window there is no Close Tab indicator. Therefor I close all of the Browser.

Simple. To close a tab, you may either:
    * use the x icon at the end of the tab, or
    * middle-click the tab.

  • Cannot close tabs at all without closing the browser.

I'm not sure what happened but I woke up, loaded up Dark Souls, exited and somehow I was unable to close any of my tabs. Also when I tried to pin one of my tabs and unpinning it, it couldn't unpin. And yes, I did try to start the browser in safe mode, the tabs still wouldn't close.

This has been reported by Firefox 25 users running the bbLean shell (Blackbox for Windows) on Windows 8, as discussed in this thread: [https://support.mozilla.org/questions/966366 Tabs will not close no matter what, even in safe mode.] No idea whether that is relevant to your configuration.

  • How can I enable the center mouse click to open and close tabs in Firefox and Chrome?

I have a MacBook Pro Model A1261 purchased in 2009. On my other mac at work (and my PC) I can center click to open a link in a new tab while in Chrome or FireFox, and also to close a tab by clicking on it in the tabs at the top. I am using an external USB mouse on my MacBook Pro and when I click the center scroll wheel it brings up the dashboard. I looked in the settings but wasn't able to find a way to change that setting for the center button to open and close tabs in my web browser. Is there a way? Please help!

You can restore the zoom feature by changing the values of the related prefs on the <b>about:config</b> page.

  • Where did Close Tab and Close Window under the File tab go? I end up with all these open windows or exiting altogether.

Under the File tab, I no longer see Close Tab or Close Window. Thus, I end up with a lot of open windows, because if I click File Exit, I'm logged out.

You need to create a file userChrome.css in the chrome folder in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder] and paste the above posted code in the file.<br />
You can use the ChromEdit Plus extension to make it easier to edit the file.
You can access the profile folder via this button:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
That code will cause all hidden menu entries to get visible all the time, so you can use the mouse to open the menus and do not need to use the keyboard.

  • Unable to close the posting periods in MM

    Hello
while using MMPV  the system says that the date not current calender year. If I check OMSY the  open year is 2002.I need to know that how you close the open periods of previous years.I am supposed to close all the periods one by one but how to close them for the year 2002.
I tried to initialise the periods as well but the system asks me to check OSS notes 487381 before initialisation.
Please guide me as I've read all the threads related to this error but still unable to close the periods.
    Thanks & Regards
    Ashish

    Hi,
You need to close the periods one by one from 2002. There is no other way.
Go to OMSY check what is the current period,
    e.g it is 02/2002.
    then got MMPV,
Enter 03 and year as 2002 then execute, repeate till 12/2002,
then again start MMPV from 01/2003 to 12/2003. you have to perform this till current period of 2008.
    Thanks

[BUG FIXED, see "EDIT 2" at the end of my post]
I'm on Firefox 3.6.21, and I got this problem today after a Greasemonkey update (To version 0.9.10, apparently).
Disabling Greasemonkey solved the problem, and re-enabling it reproduced the problem (middle-clicking links to open in new tab did not work, merely highlighted the link).
I should also note that while Greasemonkey was enabled and the bug was affecting me, Ctrl+Click to open links in new tabs was also broken.
    I hope this helps!
EDIT: It appears this is a known incompatibility/conflict bug between current versions of Greasemonkey and Tab Mix Plus. Read more here:
    https://github.com/greasemonkey/greasemonkey/issues/1406
EDIT 2: GREASEMONKEY HAS NOW BEEN UPDATED with a workaround to fix the problem. Go to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/greasemonkey/versions/ to install the update manually. It hasn't been reviewed by Mozilla yet, so it won't be an automatic update for another day or two. All credit to "cannonfodder" below for noticing this; please mark his post as helpful!
