Unable to Communicate with Printer

I am constantly having issues with my computer advising that it is "unable to communicate with printer".  This is no good due to the fact that I have plans to print and orders to print.  It is usually ok when I print from the internet, but when I am printing from files from my computer or quickbooks, it has this problem.
I reconnect and it's ok for one print session and then boom, it's done!
I am going mad!!!!

Please provide the following relevant information so someone can help including:

Detailed Problem Description -
Operating System of computer (including service pack revision) -
Connection Method - USB, Hardwired LAN, Wireless? -

  • Unable to communicate with serial device using hex

Hi... I have two instruments, both manufactured by the same company (Inficon), both that provide the same basic function which is rate control of vapor deposition...  Both instruments use RS-232 serial communication (baud rate of 19,200, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity, no flow control).  The only fundamental difference between the two instruments is that the instrument I will call #1 communicates serially using simple ASCII text while the second instrument (#2) communicates using HEX numbers...  Using VISA serial write and read, I have for a long time been successfully communicating with instrument #1...  I send it (serial write) a certain ASCII text command and the instrument responds with a message I successfully read back (serial read)...  That works fine...  Now I have a need to do the same "write a command and read a response" with instrument #2... I'm working with an engineer at the instrument company who has supplied me with the precise HEX messages I need to send, messages he has tested on an identical instrument #2 at his factory but so far, what works for him does not work for me...  I write the HEX string.  I get no errors but also I get NO BYTES available to read at the serial port...  Note, he is NOT using LabVIEW at the factory but is instead using a proprietary serial communication executable the factory uses internally...  He and I have resorted to having me try the simplest HELLO command in HEX that is, in fact, exactly the following
0200480149  <--- in HEX (first two bytes are Length of command with LSB first, MSB second, the next two bytes are the command itself, in this case H1 (HEX for ASCII "H" is 0x48 and this company then uses 0x01 for 1 rather than the actual HEX for ASCII "1" which would be 0x31. Then the last byte is a checksum which is simply the HEX add of the two command bytes, 0x48 + 0x01 = 0x49...
The bottom line I am confident the above 0200480149 (HEX) would work if I was sending it correctly but somehow I am not...
It's the weekend right now and I've been reading NI support posts here and I already have a couple of ideas that I intend to try on Monday...  One is I will try HyperTerminal to see I can communicate that way...  Second, the code I am using is ALMOST identical to the very basic Serial Write/Read code that can be found at (this is being done in LabViEW 7.1)
    C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 7.1\examples\instr\smplserl.llb\Basic Serial Write and Read.vi
But the ALMOST might be important...  I just noticed that I "Enable Termination Character" set to TRUE (default).  That may be causing my problem so the first thing next week I will set that to FALSE and see if my problem goes away...  But I'm trying to get a jump start on this problem (I am under time pressure to get this working) so I thought I would ask for your help...
I also am not sure how to set up the string control that is inputting this HEX input message...  I have set it as "Normal" and also as "HEX display"...  But either way I set it, I still get "0 bytes at port" when I get to the READ portion of the code so neither "Normal" nor "HEX display" is working for me...
So other than trying HyperTerminal and also trying to set the "Enable Termination Character" to FALSE, can anyone suggest what I might be doing wrong???  I am pretty sure it is a formatting issue (such as sending that termination character) and I need to get it figured out soon... Any other ideas???  Any help would be much appreciated...  thanks.... bob...

Hi...  Thanks for the response...  Find the very simple code I am using attached...  Do note that the string indicator out of the VISA read does open up with default values of 0D0A (CR LF)...  I didn't put those in and I've left them there to show what the defaults were when this code was first saved, just in case you think those values being there matter...  ??  Anyway, again, the code is attached...  Note also I have left the code with its "Enable Termination Char" set to ON (default) in the Configure VISA serial subvi.  I am not at work yet and will set that to FALSE later but you've more or less convinced me that is not going to solve my problem as that is tied to terminating the READ and does not impact the Serial WRITE...  And I appreciated the input on Portmon...  I downloaded it and will give it a try when I get to work which will be soon...  But I wanted to attach the code as you requested...  Holler back if you see anything that might help me with my issue...
Oh, one last thing...  The manual for the instrument explicitly says that it uses "one start bit, 8 data bits, one stop bit, no parity, no flow control"...  What got my attention there is the explicit mention of "one start bit"...  Nothing in Windows or LabVIEW allows me to alter how many start bits there might be so I am assuming ALL serial comm uses one start bit and they just chose to mention it here???  Or might the start bit settings be an issue????  I am just searching...
Last, this code is in LabVIEW 7.1 and I really do use COM4 as I use a Keyspan serial port expander on the PC because we needed more serial ports...  That part has been tested and In fact, the other day, while in the middle of this problem we took the serial cable and hooked to what I above called the #1 instrument and talked to it just fine over COM4, same cable and everything so I think that part is good...
    thanks... bob...

  • Unable To Communicate With Printer HP Officejet Pro 8600 (Network)

I recently purchased an HP Officejet Pro 8600. One morning a couple weeks ago I tried to print something and I received a prompt saying "Unable to Communicate with Printer (Network)". I turned off the printer and turned it back on which did not help, I then turned off my wireless network, turned it back on and still nothing. I finally figured out that I first have to turn off the printer, then turn off my wireless router wait thirty seconds, turn the router back on and the turn the printer back on. After these steps my printer was working. The next morning the same thing happened "Unable to Communicate with Printer (Network)" and I've been replaying Groundhog's Day ever since.
    Please help!

    Hello msheehy-
I would like to help you with this issue. It sounds like the router is changing the ip address of the printer. This could be caused by a couple reasons. (ip lease time, power loss to the router) I would recommend looking at the following link. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03781399&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=4323648&tmp...
I think if you would set a static ip address in the printer EWS you would better off. I hope this helps.

  • Unable to scan and communicate with scan function C6180 Vista Home Premium 64 bit Printing works

I have an all in one C6180 Photosmart connected by wireless network (infrastructure). Network consists of 2-laptops, 1-Desktop and the printer.  Everything works from HP solution Center on the Compaq laptop and the Dell desktop both running Windows XP. My newest laptop is a Dell studio XPS core2   2.4ghz running Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit. I am unable to scan from the Dell Laptop using HP Solution Center nor can I scan from the printer buttons to the laptop. Solution Center opens I select "scan document" and immediately get an error message "unable to communicate with scanning device. Likewise with the copy function.  The laptop does recognize the printer though and I am able to print wirelessly.  All functions work when connected via USB so I believe the printer is fine.  I have been working with this problem since I bought the printer in 2007. I spent many hours reading hundreds of internet posts, talking by phone with HP and via e-mail support from HP.  I became frustrated and gave up for awhile but now I want to see if there are any new solutions that I don't know about. I downloaded full feature software and drivers for the 6180 from HP and performed various levels of uninstall (L1, L2, L3, L4). I also cleaned the registry with ccleaner, windows disk cleanup and manual registry deletions when allowed per HP. I have checked port settings, tried stopping HP functions is Services.Msc. The Digital monitor is currently running, however no scanner communication-computer to 6180 and no scanner communication 6180 to computer. I can print and fax from computer wirelessly. I have ran the HP diagnostic utility separately and it appears everything is fine, connection IPaddress etc. During install when prompted to run test it says the printer is connected to the network. I have tried to add a device to the network after install and get the message no wireless devices found. The scanner does not appear under Cameras and Scanners in control panel. Nor will it find the scanner when I try to add device. Firewalls and antivirus have been turned off. Still can't make it work. Suggestions please.

Sorry about your pain.  L3 uninstall is what I recommend.  Re-install from hp.com and this time, with the printer properly attached it should flow OK.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8100 unable to communicate with printer, but still prints

    Hello,
I have an Officejet Pro 8100 connected to a Windows XP SP3 computer via USB.
When installing  I downloaded the latest drivers off the HP webiste and followed the instructions for installing the printer and connecting via USB.  While installing I only installed the basic print driver.
The printer appeared to install correctly.
When printing (test page, or from other programs such as Word or Excell), the printer will actually print the requested document, however, an error box will pop up saying "Unable to communicate with printer".  The only option on the error box is the cancel the current print job.
Before cancelling the print job, even though the printer actually printed the document, I can still see the document in the print queue until I click the "Cancel" button on the error box.
I have deleted the printer, uninstalled and reinstalled twice, but the issue persists.
    Any ideas?

    Hi aconway,
I hate to hear you are having issues.  This could be caused by a port issue, bad USB cable/hub/switch connection, or possibly a spooler or driver issue.  Click Here to run the print and scan doctor (select OS, then click the + sign beside utility diagnostic tools, click the download button next to print and scan doctor). If you would like to learn more about your product, Click Here.
    Suggestions:
    1. Run the print and scan doctor to identify any port issues
    2. Connect unit directly to PC with new USB cable that meets specifications(no longer than 4-6ft).
    3. Remove any hubs or switches if being used.
    Hope this helps!

  • 6500 E710 unable to communicate with the printer

I have an HP Officejet 6500A Plus E710n-z.  It has in the past but it no longer connects (through wireless) to my computer (Apple OSX 10.8.4).  It has become intermittent over the last month, and then did not respond at all.  I had a growing list of items to print.
I have followed each of the steps on  - http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02205477&cc=au&dlc=en&lang=en&lc=en&product=408... .
Wifi to each is not a problem.
The printer has been disconnected (deleted) as the computer printer.  I have been able to add back in the 'scanner' part of the printer, but cannot add in the printer - it has the message 'unable to communicate with the printer'.
    What do I do next?
    This question was solved.

I would recommend that you do a hard reset on the printer. To do that, use the following steps.
    1. Press the Power button to turn on the product.
    2. With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
    3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
    4. Wait at least 15 seconds.
    5. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
    6. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
    7. If the product does not turn on by itself, press the power button to turn it on.
Try that and let me know if it helps!
    Best of luck,
    Kyle

  • HP 5510,windows 7, new setup of printer, "unable to communicate with printer" when i try to print

HP 5510, Windows 7, new printer, just picked it up!, "unable to communicate with printer" when I try to print a page, all network conections check out OK with Print Diagnostic Utility.

Are you receiving any error messages when you print from the desktop? Its possible the print spooler is having issues which is not pushing the jobs to the printer. Lets restart the print spooler to get any old jobs that could be stuck in the queue removed.
    1. Press the start orb in the bottom left on the screen.
    2. Click on "Run"
    3. Type "services.msc" (without the quotes)
    4. Locate the Print Spooler service in the right column
    5. Click restart on the service link on the left
After it restarts the spooler go ahead and retry printing. Let me know if this works.

  • HP Officejet 7500 E910 Network. When asked to print "Unable to Communicate with Printer"

My printer has been functioning well for some time.  When my some installed a new wireless modum I would often receive the error message "Unable to Communicate with Printer" but it would blink a few times, then connect and print.  As of three days ago I receive that message when trying to print from both of my laptops.  I am wireless and have checked the wireless signal and it is strong,  The wirless connect symbol is lit on the printer.  I ran a wireless Network Test Report on the printer and the results indicated no problems.
The printer woks if I use it manually to print or scan.  Neither printing nor scanning work when command is sent from my computer.  The Wireless Network Test Report printed fine.  Interesting though the Wireless Network test Report had the following date:  Jan-00-00 00:00AM.

  • Unable to communicate with product message when installing laserjet cp1525nw printer

I have a cp1525nw wireless printer that use to work fine wirelessly.  I changed my router password (linksys router) and now can't connect.  I have tried changing the password back to the original password and it still will not connect.  So I when back to the changed password.
I have tried resetting the printer to the default settings, removed all HP software, deleted all temp files, rebooted machine and attempted to reinstall the printer.  The software loads fine, I've connected the USB cord and then get the dreaded "Unable to communicate with product" message.  I have previously tried to connect by WPS and that didn't work either.
The Wireless Network Test Report shows that the Network Name Found test is Fail.  The Network Summary report shows a different Network Name under the wireless Network Configuration section than my network's SSID.
What do I need to do?

    Hello,
I see that you are having issues setting up the printer over the wireless network. I will certainly do my best to help you.
The password might not be recognized by the printer, if there are spaces or special characters in it.
Restore the printer defaults. Press the OK button, select Network Config, then select Restore Defaults.
Print a configuration page to make sure the SSID and the IPv4 address are cleared.
    Printing a Configuration Report.
Run the printer software again and select Add a Device to setup the wireless again.
If you are having issues, then uninstall and reinstall the software to configure the wireless.
    Uninstalling the Printer Software.

  • Printer installed and recognised by PC BUT "UNABLE TO COMMUNICATE WITH printeR"

tHIS KEEPS HAPPENING.  I have wasted hours and hours with this piece of junk!  Install, re-install, make sure the network is working, get it working ... only to find a few days later with no explanation that it now doesn't communicate with the PC, or PC doesn't commuicate with the printer!  HOw can this happen.  Why can't HP make printers that work and continue to work.  Aaaaaaaagh!!

When a printer is on the network (LAN or wireless), PC and printers don't talk to each other directly, they go through the router. "Unable to communicate", is usually due to network issues, or simply the way they work. Here are a few suggestions to minimize communication issues:
    1. if your router supports, try assign the printer a fixed IP address, using DHCP means computers and other network devices (like the printer) could get a different IP address every time they turn on,and on top of that, computers and printers nowadays try to be smart and remembers those info they last have and when things change, they are out of sync. It takes time for them to re-discover each other on the network.
    2. make sure the wireless signal strength is high enough, move the the printer closer to the router if needed.

Hello @leilee  , and welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!
I see you're experiencing connectivity issues.  I would like to help!
I would first recommend a power reset.  Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the power outlet, then wait 60 seconds. After 60 seconds, plug the printer back in. Ensure you plug the printer directly to a wall outlet. Make sure to bypass any sort of surge protector or power bar.
I would then recommend utilizing this document on Wireless printing center Troubleshooting Issues.
Good luck and please let me know the results of your troubleshooting steps. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums!
