Unable to complete catalog backup after first DVD burned successfully

I am running elements 11 on Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center.
The first DVD of the backup is completed successfully. When I insert the 2nd DVD I get this message:
"An error occurred while writing the disc. It is recommended that you contact your disc drive manufacturer and upgrade tot he latest available firmware."
I checked all programs and hardware for updates. I tried the backup 3 times and used new Fiji discs each time, but got the same results and same message each time.

You don't have an RMAN issue.
You have a listener issue.
Fix your listener.
As part of the upgrade(s) you need to account for the listener. Go back and finish that part of the upgrade.

  • PSE6 WINDOWS XP Unable to Complete Catalog Backup

I am unable to backup my entire catalog using the File> Backup Catalog command in the Organizer. The backup begins, but writes only about 60% and then I get the following error message: "Error encountered while writing file." Has anyone experienced this problem and resolved it?

    Bob,
    >I'm concerned that a full uninstall as outlined inwill remove some of my catalog data. It involves deleting the C:\Documents and Settings\[User]\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\7.0\ which contains the Catalog folder
Normally, that folder does not contain any catalog data. See this tech note for where PSE 7 places catalog folders:
    http://www.adobe.com/go/kb404990
The only way that folder might contain a catalog is if you chose it as a custom location for your catalogs (which most users wouldnt do). You can verify the location of your catalog by doing Help > System Info.
    >as well as other folders which may or may not have any relevance to all the cataloguing and editing work I have done.
The other folders removed during a manual uninstall contain preferences that you may have set explicitly or implicitly but nothing about your catalog or photos.
As I said above, I think its unlikely that a reinstall will fix your problem. But Ive been surprised about this before.
Doing a simple uninstall/reinstall, without removing traces left over by the uninstaller and without installing in simplified mode, may fix your problem. But beware that many issues with PSE are caused by preferences and application files that PSE has corrupted due to bugs, and that the automatic uninstaller shipped with PSE doesnt delete most of those suspect files (which is itself a bug). A further set of bugs is caused by interactions between PSEs installation and various anti-malware programs such as Norton, which is why Adobe recommends doing troubleshooting installations in simplified mode with all those programs disabled.
I understand your reluctance to do such detailed, manual administration of your computer, and if youre reluctant to do so, you shouldnt; but not doing so reduces the likelihood that an uninstall/reinstall will help.

  • Unable to boot on Mac Mini from DVD burned from .iso image

I'm following the Beginner's Guide to try and install Arch on a Mac Mini "Late 2009".
I have downloaded archlinux-2014.10.01-dual.iso and associated .sig, and have verified it using the gpg2 command described in the guide (including the link to http://sparewotw.wordpress.com/2012/10/ … -sig-file/ which gave some assurance that the ambiguous answer produced by gpg2 was in fact legitimate).
I then used OSX's Disk Utility to burn the .iso file to a blank DVD. After verifying the burn, it ejected the disk.
When I re-inserted it, I received a message that the disk was unmountable, giving me the option to Ignore or Eject. I chose Ignore. Then I went to the System Preferences > Startup Disk, to see if it would at least appear there as an option, but it didn't.
(I should mention that I also burned the same file to another disk using a Windows machine, and when I inserted it into the Mac I got the same message, so I don't think it's corrupted media. (Bad reader, perhaps? eek.) )
That's where I stand. There are so many variables at play here (many of them Apple-induced, I think) that I've been unable to find a solution that fits my situation. Could someone please provide suggestions / pointers / answer?
    Thanks,
    Chap

Scimmia wrote:Ignore what OSX tells you, just try booting from it: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1533
Exactly right. Holding the Option key caused a display of various bootable OSes, including the one I had just burned from the Mac using hdiutil (weirdly entitled "windows"). I selected it, and it booted. I now have a console. Problem solved. Thanks.
UPDATE: note that this boot disk *cannot* be seen or selected via the OSX System Preference > Startup Disk panel. Holding the Option key during startup seems to be the only way to select it.

  • Time Capsule Error:  Out of the box and unable to complete initial backup

I have bought a new 500gig Time Capsule a week ago and have been experiencing problems completing an initial backup. I have been following similar threads and have taken recommendations to look at the console. Below is a typical example of what I have found happens before Time Capsule/Machine crashes.
    Aug 31 11:49:55 macbook /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[5965]: Error: (-36) copying /Applications/iWeb.app/Contents/Resources/Themes/Kids Pink.webtheme/Shared/dv1679003_A.jpg to /Volumes/Backup of macbook/Backups.backupdb/macbook/2008-08-31-105555.inProgress/5F6873B6-0869-411 6-BA84-A962B534EFAF/Macintosh HD/Applications/iWeb.app/Contents/Resources/Themes/Kids Pink.webtheme/Shared
    Aug 31 11:49:55 macbook /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[5965]: Stopping backup.
I have attempted to exclude the iWeb application from backup but, after I reset the TIme Capsule, erase the previous (uncompleted) backup and commence the initial backup, the console shows that the backup encounters yet another problem with another " .lproj " file.
I have attempted to search for all files with the .lproj file extension but finder doesn't seem to be able to locate them all. It also seems a bit pointless to exclude all of these when the idea is for Time Capsule to do a full backup of the complete system.
    Need help, please!

Try using Disk Utillity to repair permission first. I appears Time Machine is choking on the file "dv1679003_A.jpg". If it's just a permissions issue that will fix it. Otherwise, drag that file to the trash (without emptying it yet) and try backing up again.

  • Unable to boot Windows 7 after first reboot (after installation and bootcamp driver)

Hi, I'm italian and I'm on a 2010-end Macbook Pro bought last month. I installed Windows 7 and then I installed the Bootcamp drivers.
I was able to operate the scroll of the mouse only magic-installing the 3.0 version ofBootcamp and then installing the missing drivers from the DVD Bootcamp 3.2. After that I rebooted the computer and tells me: "Could not start the computer" and start the recovery screen that remains indefinitely without ever doing anything, so I have to shut down by the power button.
How can I do to restore everything?

I have the exact same problem.
I've tried several times using both boot camp 3.2 whitch came with my computer, and using boot camp 4.0 that I got in the lion-update. Everything works fine until it restarts after installing the boot camp drivers, then it's the recovery screen that never finishes.
Anyone know what might be the problem?

  • Opening Catalog Backup after computer failure

    Hi Folks
    I'm obviously a dunce..
I back my images and catalog up on a second internal drive and two external drives...
I recently suffered a complete PC failure which resulted in the boot drive(C:) needing to be replaced and all software reinstalled..
I am using LR v2.6 and thought that I could open LR and go to'
FILE / Open Catalog... / and then select the second internal drive which has all files intact and open the catalog...
    But when I select the required catalog I get the message;
    "Relaunch Lightroom with this Catalog?
In order to use this catalog Lightroom must close the current catalog and restart. Do you want to relaunch Lightroom with E:\Users\Justinted\Pictures\CatBackup\2010-01-08 0950\Lightroom 2 Catalog.Ircat? "
I then click 'Relaunch' but LR just closes down and does nothing???
What am I doing wrong folks?
    Cheers
    Just

    Thanks for the quick response...
That didn't work either but for some strange reason copying the entire contents to a different drive allowed me to open the catalog...
But now all the images are 'offline or missing'...how do I get LR to find the images?
    Apologies if this really simple...

  • Time Capsule failing backup after first initial install.

I got a new Time Capsule from Apple due to the last one deciding to fail. Anyway the new Time Capsule has backed up once and since has not backed up at all. Its showing as a green light and I can connect to see what's inside (so I can see the first backup) but it just keeps saying "Preparing Backup" when trying to do another back-up. I have left it for days, next to the Time Capsule and have attached a cable and tried that way but nothing.
Must admit I am getting pretty fed up with the Time Capsule. This is the second one that's been terrible. Please help or its being sold for something else!!! Thanks!

It's not necessarily the Time Capsule. See #D1 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • [solved]zsh history completion not matching after first word?

    Hi!
I just switched to zsh some days ago and I can't get the history search completion working like it's used to work with bash (history-search-backward /  history-search-forward)
I installed grml-zsh-config, tried to rewrite most of my .bashrc to work with zsh... read a lot of man pages and changed some settings (and broke some random things... and un-broke most of them again)...
    Now when I enter p.e.:
    $ sudo tes
...and press the up/down arrows, it keeps the "sudo" but not the "tes" - it goes trough all commands that I called with sudo. Seems to behave the same way for other commands - keeps the first word, ignores everything else I typed.
No idea what this is called, what it's good for or how to change it.
Where do I look for this?
Last edited by whoops (2012-12-01 19:09:52)

^ I've not used that, so I can't say whether or not my solution is better or worse. However, I suggest using "up-line-or-beginning-search"/"down-line-or-beginning-search", as described in zshall:
    up-line-or-beginning-search, down-line-or-beginning-search
These widgets are similar to the builtin functions up-line-or-search and
down-line-or-search: if in a multiline buffer they move up or down within the buf‐
fer, otherwise they search for a history line matching the start of the current
line. In this case, however, they search for a line which matches the current line
up to the current cursor position, in the manner of history-beginning-search-back‐
ward and -forward, rather than the first word on the line.
    From my .zshrc:
    autoload up-line-or-beginning-search
    autoload down-line-or-beginning-search
    zle -N up-line-or-beginning-search
    zle -N down-line-or-beginning-search
    bindkey "\e[A" up-line-or-beginning-search
    bindkey "\e[B" down-line-or-beginning-search

  • No Audio in My First DVD burn

I imported from the camera to iMovie - went fine. iMovie Help says to burn a dvd: Choose Share > iDVD. I did this; went OK-rendered with no errors. iDVD imported the video OK. I did no editing in iDVD. After the rendering finished, I chose the Burn Immediately option, and it burned the VDV OK. When I played it on the TV, there was no audio with the video. The video played fine.
What's the quickest way to get a video unedited from the video camera to a DVD?

    You have two problems.
      ~ ~ ~
** 1. What's the fastest way to go from my JCV Everio HD to iDVD? ** The fastest way depends on your JCV Everio HD. If it doesn't support OneStep DVD in iDVD, then you have to use iMovie (or QuickTime or some other video importer/editor) first. And then open up the imported/edited video in iDVD.
      ~ ~ ~
** 2. Where did the audio go? ** The audio went away, annoyingly, because iMovie imported it in a subtle way that doesn't burn on to discs, even though it sounds fine in iDVD. I don't know the technical reasons behind this, but the problem occurs right when the video files are imported into iMovie. For some reason, a quick way around this is to export all video selections from within iMovie into Finder as .dv files, and then drag them from Finder directly (importing them) into iDVD. But then, you lose all chapter markers, which are a valuable and significant feature of DVD viewing.
      ~ ~ ~
In my experience, I have found that certain types of .mov files import correctly into iMovie and other types of .mov files do not, and the only way to tell is to burn a DVD, or to export an iDVD project to a disk image (as explained below). This importing error sometimes happens with other file extensions as well, but not too often. And most of the time, iMovie is absolutely wonderful. Let's not forget that. Anyway, the solution is that a third-party app (as suggested below) must be used to convert your video files into a format which iMovie always likes, such as .dv. So, first, perhaps using Apple's "Image Capture" app, import your video files from your camera on to the Desktop - or someplace else useful in Finder. Next, use the third-party app to convert them into .dv files. And last, drag those .dv files into an open iMovie project.
      ~ ~ ~
A free app I use to convert between video file formats is called "MPEG Streamclip" by squared5.com. Its interface is a little complex, but the default settings will convert most files just fine. Simply open your video files with it and save them as .dv files. Incidentally, when converting certain video formats such as .vob files, MPEG Streamclip will display an error message explaining that it needs "MPEG-2 Components". In that case, just go to Apple's online store and buy the $20 "QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component". Also, if you want to alleviate most other future video format concerns (unless you want to use .wmv files), install Perian. It is free from perian.org and, once installed, it will show up in your System Preferences as its own preference pane.
      ~ ~ ~
Regarding disk images, iDVD allows for you to export to a disk image. A disk image is a file that contains all of what gets burned on to a CD/DVD. Once it is created, the disk image will need to be opened (mounted) in the Finder in order to access it. Once it is mounted, in the case of a disk image created by iDVD, open Apple's "DVD Player" app and it should automatically start playing a mounted disk image that was made in iDVD. If the DVD content in the disk image seems acceptable to you, Apple's "Disk Utility" app can burn that disk image on to a CD/DVD if you would like to do that. Lots of people use disk images to test DVDs before burning them, including myself. When you're done with the burning, you'll need to eject the disk image from within the Finder, as if it was an actual disk.

I keep having this problem with FCP Studio applications where large sections of my hard drive space just keep vanishing when Im doing some work on it.
Now every time I burn a DVD I seem to be losing more space on my hard drive, and I mean several GIGS at a time. Whats the deal?

    Hi:
Take a look to Disk Inventory X, a little application very useful for finding disc space eater files.
It shows a graphic representation of your drive/folder with color clasification, i.e. all your VIDEO_TS folders will appear same color.

  • Error Message - "Unable to complete back-up"

After nearly a year of working perfectly Time Machine suddenly comes up with the following error message - "Time Machine Error - Unable to complete the backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume".
I've run disk utilities to examine the external backup disk and all is well but Time Machine still does not work. I've changed the backup disk and still gotten the same error.
Does anyone have any ideas what is happening here?
    thanks

You are aware, I guess, that that error message comes up occasionally and can be fixed by simply immediately ordering a backup manually, which generally completes successfully. I take it that in your case you tried that and no luck.
TMBuddy Widget actually extracts that info directly into the widget, making it simpler to get to.
I know about that occasional backup failure and was one of the first to notice and report it. It came from 10.5.3 AIR and I filed one of the first bug reports on it. Yes, a manual backup works or just wait until the next scheduled backup.
My point is that I have not gotten any of those in quite a while. You can check some of my old posts here about it.
