Unable to conduct a safe boot ...

My inability to install an update to MS Office for Mac indicated a possible issue with my hard drive needing repair. I cannot figure out how to do a safe boot even after reading numerous discussion threads here. I fear I may have an even deeper problem. Here is the situation ...
I cannot safe boot using the Shift key during boot up. My computer goes through the motions and eventually turns off.
When I try to do a safe boot off of my Mac OS X Install Disk 1 (holding down the C key during boot up), it directs me into the install mode for OS X, thereby erasing prior versions on my hard drive. It does not allow me to proceed directly to a safe boot and then proceed with a Disk Utility Repair option.
If I try to safe boot holding down the Option key, it does give me the option of booting up using either my own hard drive, the Mac OS X Install Disk, or finding a Network drive. If I choose the Mac OS X Install Disk, I get dead ended in the same manner as indicated in the previous paragraph. If I choose the Network option, I do boot up, but not in safe mode.
I am not a techie and hope that I am just missing something obvious. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Soul Man, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Not that it matters that much, but for clarity, only the Shift key is Safe Boot...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
Do let us know if you need a better explanation or what the outcome of repairing the HD is.

Looking in to Mac support I found article http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570 and followed instructions to perform a safe boot:
    "Perform a Safe Boot
Simply performing the Safe Boot may resolve this issue.
Shut down your Mac. If necessary, hold your Mac's power button for several seconds to force it to power down.
Start your Mac, then immediately hold the Shift key. This performs a Safe Boot. Advanced tip: If you want to
see the status of a Safe Boot as it progresses, you can hold Shift-Command-V during start up (instead of just Shift).
Note: A Safe Boot takes longer than a typical start up because it includes a disk check and other operations.
The following is the script that appears on the screen upon safe boot. and halt after the last line.

  • Help: upon safe boot, got following message: BootCacheControl: Unable to open /Var/db/BootCache.playlist:2 No such file or directory

Mac Book Pro, late 2011. Purchased in a department store in Mexico.
Was running ok for several days after I purchased it.
Had some software installed and memory upgraded from 4 to 8Gb.
Suddenly at start up, got a gray screen with a spinning wheel and never boot.

Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup), launch Disk Utility, select your startup volume, and run Repair Permissions. Then reboot as usual.

  • Unable to safe boot

I am unable to safe-boot my new iMac. I hold down the shift key while rebooting until I see the gray apple and the progress indicator. After about 30 seconds, with the progress bar at 40% the screen blanks and the system restarts (chimes and starts over). Any suggestions; I have no problems starting normally

Restart your Mac holding the mouse button. That should eject the DVD. As for getting the computer to boot, it sounds like you may be forced to reinstall the OS and if DW failed at rebuilding the disk directory it may be better to format the drive, reinstall the OS, and then restore from a backup. Hope you have one.

  • MBP appears to start up in safe boot!?

    I have a MBP running 10.6.8
At start up it appears to be starting in Safe Boot without me wanting it to. ie grey screen, apple logo, progress bar in darker grey. This takes about 10 mins.
When it has completed this is is not actually in Safe Boot/Mode but behaves perfectly normal.
It started doing this about 3 months ago for no reason I can fathom.
I have actually started up in Safe Boot successfully to try and kick start the MBP into behaving normally, with no success. I have also reset thr PRAM etc.
Even though the MBP behaves well after start up it is annoyning that it has to take 10 mins to do so each time. Also there is obviously something wrong, which is worrying.
    Any help appreciated, Thanks.

    Thanks roam

  • How do I get my macbook off CAPS lock and safe boot?

My macbook is stuck on caps lock and only comes up on safeboot? what should I do? It was only on sleep and playing music but when I wanted to log back I was unable to do so

Open the terminal app. (Applications => Utilities => Terminal)
Copy and paste the following code.
    sudo nvram boot-args=""
    then restart your mac.
if you will want to stick with the safe boot again use the following code.
    sudo nvram boot-args="-x"

  • Various application crashes after safe boot

On start up of Mac OS 10.6.2, safe boot was initiated automatically. (Possible system crash during previous run?) Since this point I have restarted in normal mode. Now all applications that were not already running during previous normal session quit on start up, (icon gets as far as jumping stage, but no further). Time Machine opens, but quits when attempted restore is chosen. Most applications run OK in safe mode. Have already reset PRAM but no change. Unable to open Crash report as well to post on here. Any ideas? Thanks.

Thanks Neville, have tried that. Carried out necessary repair which was successful. Re-ran repair and message confirmed no further repair needed. Restarted in normal mode but still have same problem. The only programs working are Mail, Safari, itunes, and Finder. These are the ones that were running before problem. Tested crash report no difference. Re-ran Time Machine but now 'restore' button is shaded out, whereas previously able to select and only crashed when tried to replace desktop files to previous point.

  • After update 6.0.1 I am unable to conduct online banking with wifi on. I can with 3G and wifi off. Same with iPad or my iPhone 4. Any suggestions?

After update 6.0.1 I am unable to conduct online banking with wifi on. I can with 3G and wifi off. Same with iPad or my iPhone 4. Any suggestions?

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Can't get past Log-In window--Safe Boot

I'll try and keep this easy/short: My iMac g-5(first Gen i-sight), when upon startup, the wheel would just spin and then the fans would blow turbo while stuck on the spinning wheel. Was running on Tiger but was able to salvage the h/d and all on it, no damage to it. So we erased all on my iMac and tried booting from disc. No good. Tried starting from another laptop; No good. Then cloned from working Leopard laptop, did basic install and got to the Log-in widow--in Safe Boot mode and cannot get past the Log-in window. I get a dialogue box w/an applications icon that says, " You are unable to log in to the user account "..." at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred." I hit okay and the dialogue box shakes a frustrating no at me.
    What do I do now?
    Any ideas? Thanx to all.

Try an Archive and Install now, it will put a fresh copy of the OS but keep, your data and preferences. Cloning from a different system is not a very good idea, you run into the problems you have, and probably other ones as well.
If the A&I doesn't work, you may have to wipe your drive and perform a clean install of Leopard.

  • Safe Boot seems to have broken my W7 Bootcamp partition

    MacBookPro Retina
    OS X 10.8.3
    BootCamp with Win7
Parallel's VM 8 using BootCamp Partition
This morning I was looking at my logs, and I saw a minor odd recurring error with a Spotlight process, so I Googled it, and found that I could fix it by doing a Safe Boot.  So I shut down my running programs, and I did a  SHUTDOWN on my Parallel's Windows 7 VM (running from my BootCamp partition).  I performed the Safe Boot, OS X came up, and everything seemed fine until I tried to start a Win7 VM using Parallels.  When I did that, I got a white progress bar that said "Windows is loading files", and then the WIndows Splash screen, and then the Windows startup recovery tool.  The tool found no errors and so was unable to repair anything, so I closed everything, and rebooted into BootCamp mode, and I found the same sequence of events, but this time the startup tool said that it had repaired Windows and then it rebooted.  But again the system went into startup repair mode, but it found no errors.  Now, each time I boot to BootCamp Win7, the white progress bar is displayed, the startup recovery runs, but it finds no errors, fixes nothing, and then shuts down, only to recur again.  I can F8 into the Windows boot menu, but any choice that I make (safe mode, reovery mode, etc.) gives me the white progress bar with the "Windows is loading files" message, and then the startup recovery tool.  I can boot into OSx, and I can see all of the files on the BootCamp partition, but I can't boot to it.
What did Safe Boot do to my Windows boot process?  How can I fix this?  Thanks.
    Mike

7 GB is on the low side, you really should have minimum 15GB.
Repairing permissions is an important part of regular maintenance, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two.

An article on troubleshooting Permissions can be found here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963
If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

  • Safe boot problem.

Yesterday my iMac started to freeze up on my desktop and wouldn't open any applications. From my phone, I looked up solutions to this problem. Everybody said to try a safe boot and how to do it, so of course I tried it. Ever since I tried the safe boot my computer is worse. Now, on start up the Apple logo appears as well as a progress bar. The progress bars reaches, i'd say, FIVE % before the iMac just completely shuts itself off. I have tried EVERYTHING I can that doesn't involve physically putting a disk in. I bought my computer off of Craigslist about 2 years ago and was never given the disk so I am unable to follow instructions that involve using one. All the answers I have previously been given I have ALREADY tried countless times and STILL, nothing works. My computer remains on start up with the grey screen, apple icon & progress bar and then shuts itself off every.single.time. I am losing my patience.

What version of OS X are you running?

  • Cannot Do A Safe Boot In Mavericks

Everytime I try to boot my iMac into Safe Boot mode after installing Mavericks, this is what happens:
    - It starts with the progress bar on the bottom (at which time I let go of the Shift key),
    - The progress bar gets to about 1/3 the distance then disappears,
    - The screen goes blank and then my iMac restarts itself and ends up as a normal boot.
I have tried with and without any external peripherals connected.
Also, iMac sometimes hangs on shutdown and I have to press the power button to turn it off.
Anyone else experiencing similar problems? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

My last resort is to backup to an external drive and erase the boot disk and do a clean install.
If you do so, make sure to target the entire disk0 from Internet Recovery with a 3x secure erase if possible.
It will take a long time to complete since you have a large drive, but will ensure all your bad sectors are mapped off.
I will run some other OEM disk utilities to see if a hardware problem exists.
Like I said, run through the Steps, it might be a corrupted NVRAM which is a easy fix and the Steps won't hurt if trying.
Apple's Hardware Test is hold D down on a wired or built in keyboard while booting up until you see something takes a few minutes to load from Apple's servers)
I will run some other OEM disk utilities to see if a hardware problem exists. Apple's Disk Utility seems to think that the drive is okay.
I doubt the other software will assist, then only check the free sectors on MacintoshHD partition, it seems your problem is in the hidden and inaccessible EFI partition. Disk Utility doesn't check for data integrity or for bad sectors.
This iMac is less than a year old.
If hard drives fail, they usually do so within the first year.
Don't even bother, just backup and let Apple replae the hard drive portion of the Fusion drive with a new one under warranty. Make sure to buy AppleCare for two more years of coverage, as since your getting a new drive, it could also fail in the next year.
Since only Apple can replace drives in most Mac's now, your stuck paying their higher prices for repairs when i's usually a easy user level fix in older Mac's.
I disagree with your assesment that any Maverick's problem would turn up in testing. It is impossible to test for all hardware/software configurations.
Apple has volunteers to test new OS X versions on older and varied configurations, I did so at one time.
Also not being able to boot into Safe Mode would for sure be caught at testing, as it's a commonly checked for function.
So that leads more to a hardware/drive corruption issue on your machine rather than a specific Mavericks flaw.
Just look at this software forum and the people that had problems with the Maverick's install (I did not and have post-install problems). I was a software engineer and this is common knowledge. That is why you see a lot of bug fixes released right after new software comes out. Many unique hardware/software configurations out there!
I can understand from your software engineer expereince that you would tend to think that the software is at fault, however as you know software is only as reliable as the structure it's written on.
If your problem was widespread, then yes it might be a fault in the Mavericks code, but it's not and many of the issues on this forum so far are not widespread with many users.
When you've been here for many years, you get to see if patterns develop that might point to a code flaw.
Instead most of the problems with Mavericks so far seem to be individual in nature, which points to a specific problems on each users machine.
I'm willing ot also bet the most issues are with users with hard drives, because bit rot/bad/damaged sectors is a major contribuor o the code becoming corrupted.
We hardly see anyone here with software issues with SSDs.
Apple has not employed significant data integrity checks for hard drives, then users also incur shock damage with portable models.
Take your machine into Apple and let them replace the drive since you will likely be unable to map off the bad sectors yourself using Disk Utiltiy.
If you don't have AppleCare, then purchase it, because if the next drive has bad sector issues and it occurs after the one year warranty has expired, then your looking at out of pocket and only Apple can replace iMac drives now due to proprietary software installed on the drive to work with firmware.
    Good Luck

  • Firewire Drive Causes Crash at Startup, Safe Boot OK

I have a LaCie External Drive that all of a sudden decided to start causing OSX to crash at startup. While connected booting normally brings up the "need to restart" screen, booting in Single User causes a Kernel Panic, Safe Boot is ok, Booting from Install Disk is ok, but as soon as I connect the drive it's "you need to restart..."
    So far i have tried the following;
Zapped the PRAM, repaired permissions normally while disconnected, repaired permissions in Safe Boot while connected, and repaired permissions from Install CD while connected.
My question is of course, what can be causing this problem and how do I fix?
I have sifted through previous discussions but was unable to find an answer, so I apologize if this is a duplicate. Also, if anyone knows of a better category to list this I would appreciate input. Thanks!

    DOH!
Like everything else in life, the simplest solution is best. after remembering that the drive is both USB and FW i dug up my cables and tried the USB connection and...all better. So yes, I guess this would prove that the FW port is to blame.
    Thanks for the help!

  • Boots fine, but won't Safe Boot

All of a sudden, I've been having two problems. The first one I've posted already, but will list here in case one has to do with the other.
The first problem is that I can't open any disk images. I repaired permissions, repaired disk (it was fine), got rid of the recommended extensions and caches and rebooted, tried another user login, nothing helps.
The new problem is that I tried doing a Safe Boot (hold down the shift key after the startup chime), and it hangs at the gray apple and spinning gear. Mind you, the computer boots just fine the normal way (no keys depressed during boot). Any ideas of what's going on?

Did you use Disk Utility from a backup/clone emergency boot drive?
How about Single User Mode and running fsck command to repair the drive?
Safe Boot sounds like it is unable to replay the journal file properly - or something - and that you have a dirty file system directory issue.
Or, a bad SHIFT KEY ;-( (unlikely, or bad USB cable connection).
Some of us have a policy of never using "delta" software updates, only using the combo update (standalone), and once in awhile, MacFixit/MacIntouch and others have recommended rerunning the combo update again to fix some "minor" problems.
I am a fan of using Applejack before any update to check the drive, delete caches, remove swap files, look for corrupt plists, after running fsck. And to never use the computer during or while it is being updated, which has been known to lead to problems.

  • OS X will not start in Safe Boot but it does start normally

I have not been able to install updates for TurboTax or Quicken; the updater hangs. Intuit customer support suggested trying to install them while the computer is in Safe Mode. Big surprise: it brings up the Apple screen and the spinner, but after a few minutes the computer shuts down.
It starts normally otherwise; just not in Safe Boot.

but after a few minutes the computer shuts down.If your computer shuts down when attempting a Safe Boot, this means the filesystem check is failing.
You need to boot from your Install CD/DVD by holding the "C" key down while you restart. When the Installer appears you need to select Disk Utility from the menus (which menu it is on varies, do a search).
You can then choose the "First Aid" tab, and click the Repair Disk button. If you are lucky, it will report that it fixed some errors, in which case run it again until it says there are no errors. But given that Safe Boot does this automatically, you are more likely to get an error that it is unable to fix—at least you will see what the error is, and can post it here.
You may need to invest in a third party Disk Repair program like DiskWarrior to fix this. But you must fix it before attempting to install anything else.
