Unable to configure Power Management options

Following Power Management options are disabled/greyed out for me -
Choose What Power Buttons Do
Choose What Closing the Lid does
I am using Lenovo T420, windows 7 enterprise and I also have the admin login.
The Close Lid action is set to Hibernate by default which is really frustrating and I would like to configure this especially.
Please help.

G510s/windows 8.1 sleep problems (power management options & BIOS do not correct it)

hi there,
suddenly seemingly for no reason, the sleep function of my machine no longer works properly. when the machine goes to sleep, it either shuts itself off or goes into unwakable hibernation, in which case i must shut the machine off improperly and crash my open files. the fan also stays on non-stop when it is in unwakable hibernation.
i have changed the power management options numerous times based on suggestions i have read about or been told via lenovo support, and in each case, the sleep function works properly the next 5 times or so, but then the same old problem arises again.
in addition, i now receive pop-up boxes every time i turn the machine on that indicate that the start menu has been updated, and it asks me if i want to install skype, etc. this is now a daily occurrance, and i wonder if it is related to the sleep problems, or if this is a new unrelated glitch.
please tell me how to fix the machine, keeping in mind that i have already changed the power settings numerous times to no avail. in addition, my BIOS is and always has been up to date, as this is a brand new machine.

After upgrading to Windows 8.1 did you install the appropriate chipset driver and IMEI software?

Feature request Lock workstation (Win+L) when Lid is closed ~ power manager option

Under "Events" in Power Manager windows there are any options what should happen when you use this or that hotkey or when you close laptop lid.
But what it really misses is an option to just Lock the laptop - same pressing Win+L
Can you consider adding that option, when I close laptop lid to do just that?

I don't think that would ever be a feature of power manager since locking the screen is not a power management function, but check this out:

If your thinkpad has a camera you can configure it to lock automatically anytime there is no keyboard/mouse activity AND a face is not detected after xx seconds (including when screen is closed). It works great and I use it on my T500.
I realize this isn't exactly what you are looking for, but I offer it as a way to lock your screen if you can't remember to press Win+L before closing lid.

Major build needs power management options

i recently acquired a mac pro 2008, 8-core 2.8. with the help of an atto r348 and a a kit from maxupgrades, i put in 6x1.5tb seagate barracudas raid 5, 2x250 es.2 raid 0. i also have 32gb ram from transintl, a evga geforce 285. originally i went with a a highpoint 4320, but it is not compatible with snow leopard, so i had to rma it with a hefty restock fee. then one of the seagates died during initializing the raid. now the gtx is dead. while waiting to get a new raid card, everything went passed it's time for a quick replacement from apple or newegg. evga wants to know if it's because there isn't enough power going to the card. they are trying to figure out a way to say i broke the card. supposedly all my calculations are way off and when the raid initialized and spun up together the card was fried.
is there an app where i can monitor the power?
how much power is coming from the 2x6 pin connector?
is there a way to get more power in there?
if i change the raid to a staggered spin up, does that effect performance and do i have to rebuild the raid?
i also wanted to use a maxflow ram fan from maxupgrades but didn't have anywhere to plug it in. and i want to put in an airport card. so i'm really pushing it on power.
also, if i do need to go and get an extra power source, anyone have any suggestions for a fan for the hdd's in the optical bay?
i promise this is the last build i try to cram this much inside of a tower.

T420 and windows 8(.1) power manager

As a two-year user of the T420 I am quite used to the power manager and its extended options. When I tried Windows 8 a couple of months ago I noticed that there were only the standard windows power management options available. Mind you, they worked fine, but they weren't near as good as the power manager of Lenovo.
My question is whether or not this functionality (power manager) is available for windows 8(.1) or will be available in the future?

There is no ThinkVantage Power Manager for Windows 8.
Power Plans and idle timers are managed by the OS itself.
Lenovo-specific power options like Battery Stretch and 30-Day Standby can be configured in Lenovo Settings.
What specific feature of Power Manager do you think you're missing on Win8?

Power Manager and Access Connections crash, neither help nor solution from Lenovo!?!

I've already posted here on the forum several weeks ago about the obvious problem that Lenovo has with the latest version of the Power Manager and the Access Connections which both crash either on startup or while tryibg to open it.
So far there has been neither an update, nor a solution nor an official statement from Lenovo about that problem that consists rightnow for over two month!
When searching the forum I see the same all over again: Unanswered threads, solutions that don't solve anything at all and so on...
And just if someone here comes up with comments like:
"work's here" or "just rollback to the old version", what is the point of writing software that doesn't work?? And why not giving ANY SUPPORT AT ALL???!!!
I really would at least like to see an official statement saying "we work on it". After buying one of the most expensive notebooks on the market (and in my opinion still one of the best) hat would be the least one could expect form a "award wining" company like Lenovo...

Hello, I am a Help Desk Consultant at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and currently, we've had many problems with access connections, 4965 agn wireless card, and its drivers.
Symptoms:
1) Wireless card is detected my windows device manager
2) Wireless card is NOT detected by access connections, intel wireless utilities/tests/etc
Other related information:
1) Events with ID 7036 + source: NETw#v## (the # stand for numbers, I can't quiet remember which ones but the one after the v is a 5
2) Rollback driver is NEVER an abailable option
3) Every failure case with same symptoms came in starting mid September
4) If you select "show hidden devices" in device manager, there is a huge number of devices, most of which seem to be repeats
After many hours of debugging and fustrated complaints, I have determined that it could be one of many problems:
1) Teredo tunnelling: Apparently, atheros/intel/access connections won't find the wireless card if teredo has been enabled or something
2) Power management: A default setting is "let windows turn the wireless off it there's not enough power" in wireless properties>configure>power management
3) Driver update combination conflict: between a update on 9/21 and present time, there's something horribly gone wrong
If anyone has a definitie solution to this, please post.

Thinkpad Power Manager settings vs Window 7 stock power plan

As much as I can see, many of my ThinkPad w530 stock Power Manager options are the same as in Windows 7 power options (power plans). But I was not able to find anywhere an answer to my quite obvious question, which of them settings have a priority in the event, that they are different? Say, if I choose "Enter system standby" value "after 30 min of idle" in ThinkPad Power Manager, but set the value of the same option to "Never" or "5 minutes" in Windows power options, which should work? Or may be the both simultaneously?

Certainly I can check it myself which a series of simple tests, how it actually works. But my question has a bit another point, that is how these things should work. (I have some minor issues, say, laptop does not go to sleep/standby when works on AC, although previously it did it exactly as it is configured in Power Manager idle settings. So in order to detect possible cause I whish to understand, how it should work.)

I had this problem too - I found that if you run the Lenovo Power Manager as an administrator it will change the windows power settings. Running it as a standard user won't do a thing - the settings panel should be changed by lenovo to automatically require an admin password when run.

Power Manager locking taskbar and creating two battery icons on X201

I am having an issue with one of my X201s and Power Manager running windows 7. My other X201 that runs the same software and was buil7 withing a few months does not have the issue. Periodically while on the internet a second battery icon will pop up on the task bar just partially overlapping the first icon and it has a fluttering appearance. When that happens the task bar is frozen and it takes accessing task manager to be able to restart the computer. I uninstalled and reinstalled the latest versions of the driver for Power Manager and Power Manager but that did not fix the problem. Not running Power Manager seems to prevent any problems but that is not what I want to do. I did some reading last night and it seems I am not the only one having an issue and it is not confined to the particular model. Searching did not lead me to real answers. Looking for a solution or a better way to diagnosis this.

I thought I would post this in case someone has the same issue I did. Today my taskbar froze after startup (i.e. I couldn't access the start button or any other icon on the task bar and I had a two wonky grey battery icons where only one should have been). Restarting explorer.exe didn't help. It didn't even work in safe mode. No viruses, malware, disk/hardware issues could be found. The culprit was the Power Manager. There have already been a couple threads on this, but they are somewhat convoluted in addressing the issue so I thought I would post a straight forward solution.
I had version 6.3x installed on my T430 (which is only a couple months old, by the way). I had read in another thread that the power manager has been causing problems with the taskbar from way back BUT merely uninstalling it after the problem occurs has triggered the blue screen of death for several users.
So, I downloaded and installed the latest version of Power Manager (currently 6.6x). I did not uninstall the previous version first. I simply installed the new version and restarted the computer when prompted. This fixed the frozen taskbar issue.
Then, and only then, did I uninstall power manger completely because I never want to deal with this again. Everything is now back to normal.
The TL;DR version:
Step 1: Download and install latest version of power manager. DO NOT uninstall previous of power manager first.
Step 2: Restart computer
Step 3: For peace of mind, unistall the latest version of power manager.
Step 4: Restart computer
I hope this helps anyone who needs it.

Well using the older version of powermanger did not work as the issue popped up again. I also discovered the other X201 in the house was also having the same issue with the two battery icons and locked task bar.
I tried a new tactic which unchecking the the box in Power Manager-Options-Show periodic messages about the battery condition. This so far no brought up the problem but more testing is necessary to be certain.

Problems with SpeedStep and Windows Power Management: SYSTEM FREEZES!

I am running an E6600 on my MSI 975X PUE-Mainboard @ 2,4 GHz. I am experiencing a strange problem that seems to be related to EIST and/or Windows Power Management:
As soon as I set Windows Power Management to "Presentation" or any other mode that lets Windows throttle the CPU frequency the system freezes randomly: no bluescreens, no error messages...the only option is to hit the restart button...
However, if the Windows Power Management Option is set to "Desktop" the system runs just fine!
Has anyone else experienced similar problems?
Any suggestions?

Intel clearly states that:
"An OS that supports Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology is required. Current supporting OSs include:, Microsoft Windows* XP SP2 includes native support for Enhanced Intel SpeedStep® technology."
and further:
"Finally Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology must be turned on in the OS. Currently, for Windows* XP SP2 operating systems Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology by default is off. To turn it on do the following: Under Control Panel – open Power Options Under the Power Schemes pull down menu To turn Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology ON select, “Minimal Power Management,” power scheme. If I select the "Minimal Power Management" power scheme, the CPU frequency will drop to about 1,6 GHz and the Voltage (CPU-Z) to 1,136-1,144 V. Whenever I do that the system will eventuelly freeze. Skipping through a video file in Media Player Classic is sometimes enough to cause the system to hang.
If I select the "Always On" power scheme the system will run stable, no freezes will occur, but the CPU will ALWAYS run @2,4 GHz and the voltage WILL NOT be reduced to 1.14 V.

Unfortunately, a clean re-install of Windows XP Pro did not take care of my problem. I've already tried that. The system is not overclocked and is running with default settings. Speedstep is enabled.
It is interesting to notice, that Dual Core Center always causes my system to freeze, even though Windows Power Management Options are set to "Always On". I read a lot of bad things about this program and that is one more reason for me to avoid using it.
Well, I have forwarded my problem to Intel and MSI Support, maybe they will come up with any solution.
Until then, further suggestions are very welcome...

Dynadock power management issue

I have a Dynadock which I connected with another equiptment using the serial port.
The connection was fine in the begining (after start up) but it is lost after my laptop is in active for a while.
Once I undock and redock the Dynadock, the connect is back again.
I've already disabled the power management option of the laptop (Always ON) but the issue persist.
Question: Is there anyway I can disable the power management feature of the Dynadock?

What PC / Laptop do you have?

Thinkpad L520 Power Management Issues

Hi all,
I have to report several issues with my Thinkpad (Core i5 2520M).
Both seem to be related to power management, that's why I decided to put them in one thread.
The problems occur on battery and with ac power connected, I have a 90 Watt power supply.
I am running Windows 7 x64 on my laptop, and I've applied all patches from Microsoft Update and Lenovo System Update.
All drivers are up to date. I am using the latest BIOS file (1.20).
The first problem is: My Thinkpad does not automatically increase CPU speed, it is always staying at 800 Mhz.
Even running Prime95 does not trigger some upscaling.
I experienced the same behaviour under Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, which I booted to check the problem.
In Windows, I set all power management options to full power (Windows Energy Control Panel and Lenovo Power Manager as well), still no change.
A complete BIOS reset (with removing the CMOS battery) did not change the situation.
The only workaround so far is, to run a software called "ThrottleStop", and to uncheck the box saying "BD PROCHOT". After doing so, the CPU is scaling up to 2.5 Ghz, but still does not enter Turbo mode.
The program has to be re-run after every boot to enable upscaling.
The second issue is:
I have bought a secondary hard drive bay, and the containing disk keeps spinning down after a few seconds of idle. (Yes, seconds!) The disk is working fine, does not have SMART errors and does not show this behaviour in another laptop and as an external USB drive.
I disabled all power savings options again (Window, Power Manager, and Disk AAPM), which could cause such behaviour, but still no luck. The first hard drive is an SSD, therefore I can't tell, if this drive is also affected by that behaviour.
UPDATE: After booting Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, I can verify that the behaviour is identical to Windows.
Since both of these problems seem to be related to some part of the power management, I am wondering if there is some bug in the BIOS itself or maybe some faulty system driver.
Any help on that would be appreciated, since normally working with the Thinkpad is rather annoying, considering the slow speed and the constant spin-up/down of the drive.

Same here, the secondary hard drive is not seen in BIOS or in the BIOS boot menu.
After booting Windows/Linux, the drive works fine.
UPDATE: Even in good ol' DOS, the drive is seen. (I just booted DOS for a firmware update of an SSD drive, which was installed in the hard drive caddy.)
Where did you get the BIOS v1.32? The latest on the Lenovo Website and in System Update is 1.20..
Can you verify something for me too?
On my L520, Turbo Mode does not work at all, how about yours?
You can verify under Windows using hwinfo (http://www.hwinfo.com/ ).
For Linux, there's http://code.google.com/p/i7z/ , but you'll have to compile it.

Disabling "CPU Power Management" through BIOS -- any bad consequences?

Ok, so my new T440S is emitting a most annoying high-pitched noise. After doing some research, I come to the conclusion that it is the so called CPU Whine.
According to the diagnostics provided on this page:

Disabling CPU Power Management may silence the noise - as a diagnotic measure, not a solution (as the post asks the user to contact Lenovo support for assistance).
So I tried that and indeed it silences the annoying whine. I have already contacted Lenovo and they said they will get back to me after Christmas. Meanwhille, I am still using this computer, and I am keeping the setting for CPU Power Management Disabled, until Lenovo solves the noise problem.
I was wondering if this (keeping the CPU Power Management disabled) may have some bad consequences - like melting some parts down or something. Would anyone know?

I have good news. I have the same problem. My T440s is completely quiet at 43 °C CPU so I don't need any fans to spin. However there is a slight buzz coming out of the middle of the laptop. And it isn't coming from the speakers nor the fan. I didn't bother to open it up yet and check what is causing that noise, but I guess it's related to some coil whine or voltage leakage. As in your case, when I turn off the CPU Power Management option in the BIOS, the sound dissapears completely.
HOWEVER I conicidentally put one SD Card Adapter into the Card Slot and the sound completely dissapeared. I would say give it a try. Sadly the sound comes back in 20 seconds at my machine, but I am using a Sd card adapter with no card in there. Maybe this will change when I put one in. Have to test, because I don't have one lying around.
Lenovo has done a great job. You could to better at this price range, especially when the pc market is shrinking .. it's survival of the fittest. You will see what I mean when you won't get foothold in US and Europe anymore and only will supply Asia.
You won't probably answer this thread and when you do "awww yes, we are deeply sorry, some level buzz is completely normal" CTRL+V bull**bleep**.
Don't get me wrong. I really like the new T440s as my first ThinkPad, but my high order of quality wasn't meet. However I still bought it, because I needed one laptop with really good battery life, good screen and small footprint. Well sorry for the rant.

Uninstall power manager on xp

hi there,
I am unable to use Thinkpad Power Manager. May be corrupt? While hit Fn+F3, error message: "unathorized access. OK". On xp control panel energy panel unable to select schemes, also not starting power manager from control panel.
Next I am unable to unsintall Power Manager from installed programs. It is starting the deinstallation process, but approx 90% of the remove bar it pops up a windows, and close immediately (so no idea what is on it).
Any idea I can trace why not uninstall? or how to uninstall?

Connection lost on Sleep and No power management tab in NIC to change

On a surface pro 3 with Windows 8.1, I lose connections when I lock the computer. I've tried to go to the NIC adapter to change the power management option to not turn off when locked but there is no "Power Management" tab as with previous
versions of Windows.
I have multiple machines with this problem and any help will be appreciated.

Consider the following scenario:
•You have a system that is an Always On/Always Connected (AOAC) platform.
•The system is running Windows 8.
•You install the July update rollup 2855336 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2855336).
•After the update is installed, you open up Device Manager.
•You open the Wireless Network adapter properties.
In this scenario, you notice that the Power Management tab is no longer available within the advanced driver properties.
This behavior is by design. For Windows 8, update rollup 2855336 implements this change for Wireless adapter miniports on AOAC platforms.
Power Management tab is not visible for some Wireless Network adapters with Always On/Always Connected (AOAC) platforms on Windows 8
