Unable to connect macs with afp file sharing

I am suddenly unable to connect my MacBook Pro to my Mini using afp file sharing. I've done this successfully many times in the past, most recently about three weeks ago.
After using Go -> Connect to Server and picking the previously used Favourite Server entry, I get the Connecting to Server window, then after about a minute I get a pop up that says:
Connection failed
The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and your network connection and try again.
Then the Finder icon jumps about and in the Connecting to Server window the message is:
The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "afp://aragorn" could not be read or written. (Error code -36)
Both machines are connected by Cat-6 cable to the same router, File Sharing is enabled on both machines, and Airport is switched off. I can ping each machine from the other, and both otherwise work fine. I've also tried connecting using the IP address instead of the machine name, with the same result. I've even tried another router, with the same result.
Anyone seen this before?
thanks in advance,
I.B.

Thanks, j.v., for your reply. It's very strange, this.
I tried your suggestion, but to no avail. The destination machine is visible using ⇧⌘K and under 'Shared' in the sidebar of the Finder window, but selecting it from either place didn't work.
However, after the connection attempts failed, I tried clicking on the 'Connect as' button in the Finder window, and after a bit I got the login credentials window. It allowed me to log in, then connected with the access I was after.
I guess it must be some sort of access permissions issue, but it's quite odd that it only just started happening as I move files between these two machines frequently, and never had any problems before. The 'error code 36' message is completely useless for troubleshooting...

  • Lion will not allow AFP file sharing

After upgrading my iMac to Lion, I tried to turn on File Sharing, but it would not allow it - I'd check the box, it would refuse the check.  I had to go in to Options and check SMB Sharing to get File Sharing to work.  However, I'd like to use AFP file sharing, not SMB.  I still cannot turn on AFP sharing - I check the box, it unchecks itself in 1/2 a second.
My Macbook Pro was upgraded a couple months ago, and it does not have this issue.  What am I missing?

I had this same problem so I opened the console application and viewed all messages.  Then I tried to check the File Sharing checkbox and noticed that two new entries showed up.
    3/31/12 9:21:05.415 PM com.apple.coreservicesd: launch_msg(): Socket is not connected
3/31/12 9:21:05.645 PM com.apple.coreservicesd: bind(): Address already in use
Each time I tried to check the checkbox, I received the same messages.  I could of done more detective work but Address already in use may be some kind of memory leak issue or something so I simply rebooted my Mac Pro and then I was able to check the box and it stuck this time.  Also, I was able to share my file like I intended.

  • 4 Macs different network/file sharing errors on all

Out of the box current generation Mini with Yosemite can access one old Mini with 10.7 and it;s attached 3 external drives. The externals no problem, the folders inside of that Mac’s home folder show restricted access on most. Two MBPs running Mavericks can fully access other Macs and their attached drives.  None of those 3 Macs can access the new. It shows in “Shared” but displays “Not Connected” when attempting to open, none of the new Macs attached drives naturally are not accessible either. I’ve tried using my I.D. and get the login shakes, try Apple I.D. and get the same. When attempting to share screen with the new one on any of the others gives me the login prompt. That prompt will not take my I.D. or Apple I.D. I get an “Authentication failed to “……..” verify manx and password. The new Mini can not connect to the 2 MPBS running Mavericks the same login window comes up and get the same failed message when trying both I.D.s. Or it says not connected and I try the connect as.  Nor can I sharer the screen of the new Mini. I’ve tried turning off sharing then reboot turn sharing on reboot, no luck.
Have gone into file sharing and added each folder and drive making sure that all users have read & write enabled on all of them. No luck. Have done the same thing on the 2 MPBS and still can not connect. The two MBPS are on the WiFi my network the Minis are wired to the network. Shared in the side bar only shows the new Mini and Others icon, click Others to get to network drives where I have attempted to connect. Attempting to access the new mini with old Mini gives me the “connection failed” message. So new mini can access old mini but with restrictions in Home Folder, old Mini can not access new mini in any way.
The other 3 Macs all connect to each other with both screen sharing and file sharing and never a problem. They just can’t connect to the new Mini. Firewall and FileVault are off on all Macs. I do not use Time Machine on any of them. The new Mini replaced one from the previous generation that runs Mavericks, that one has not been hooked up yet, still power off sitting on a shelf. Do not want to have a 5th problem yet, let me get the first 4 talking to each other first.
Did any of this make sense? Does anyone have suggestions. I have tried all things found here with search “file sharing”. Forgot to mention, on the new Mini the problem was there out of the box and remained after running the OS update.
    Thanks

No need, I'm the only user and have  myself set on all as admin.  Never in all my near 30 years of networking Macs at home and managing my companies 600 or so Mac Network,  with 68k, PPC, Intel units all running systems 7 - 8 - 9 -10 and all their mid versions and never had a lick of trouble with any sharing services. I've always just stuck them on the wire, fired up, and hit share, tick the boxes then Boom, all was seen by all. Same at home up till recently I had a G5 Tower as a server mixed in with all the intel, never a hiccup.  The only troubles would be if a router or switch burned out.  None of my iPhones, or iPods of various generations have had a problem with the home WiFi, the ones set up for disk usage have always shone up in the shared section of the sidebar, since have turned off disk usage so not part of the problem.
    Thanks for trying though

maybe if you asked nicely instead of ordering people around we might tell you.
As it is all you're going to hear is that you don't need both those jars, as they contain different versions of the same driver.
I'm not going to tell you which you need, as you should have the documentation to tell you that. But then you also should have the documentation to tell you how to set your classpath properly and you failed to read that too.

  • Enable AFP File Sharing via ARD through command line?

Anyone know how to enable AFP file sharing on a remote Leopard client using ARD? I had been sending Unix Commands to do most of my changes, but cannot figure out how to enable AFP file sharing through a unix command. I've tried running /usr/sbin/AppleFileServer but that doesn't seem to do the trick. Any ideas?

    Howdy, Space Ranger!
I'd recommend checking out the following documentation to get filesharing going without interrupting a current user.

    Executing a Single UNIX Command
Using the UNIX Command window, you can send a single command to the selected
client computers. The command is executed using the bash shell.
To execute a single UNIX command:
1 Select a computer list in the Remote Desktop window.
2 Select one or more computers in the selected computer list.
3 Choose Manage > Send UNIX Command.
4 Type or paste the command.
If your command is a multi-line script, enter each command on its own line. If you want
to break up a single-line command for better readability, use a backslash (\) to begin a
    new line.
5 Set the permissions used to execute the command.
You can choose the currently logged-in user, or choose the name of another user on
    the client computers.
    6 Click Send.

  • OS X LION 10.8.2 connection error with AFP

Ok the issue is that i tried to access my external harddrive over AFP with OS X LION and got a error message like this one above. I couldn’t login with a registered user .

But now after the update its back to be broken again...

Exactly the same problem here for a satellite user working abroad.
10.8.2 - cannot connect to the server over AFP. I've run the commands in the link posted, no dice.
Users running 10.8.2 on the internal LAN have no issues however, just this one off-site user.

  • Just switching from CS4 & LR5 on Windows desktops to CS+LR monthly subcription for Mac, with catalogues, files etc residing on external HDD): Anything to be particularly aware of, or beware of, before/during switch?

Just switching from CS4 & LR5 on Windows desktops to CS+LR monthly subcription for Mac, with catalogues, files etc residing on external HDD (due to multi-location living & lots of travel). Anything I need to be particularly aware of, or beware of, before/during switch? Thanks a lot for suggestions, recommendations, tips, experiences. Best, Joachim

The switch should be straight forward but I would start by uninstalling LR 5. This is because there is no specific CC version of Lightroom and you can’t run the creative cloud version and the perpetual version on the same machine. Your catalog and images will be safe and will not be affected by uninstalling. CS4 will not be affected and will still work independently.
Then launch CC desktop and go to the Apps tab. I would recommend installing in this order:
    Photoshop CC 2014
Photoshop CC (if you need this to run old plug-ins)
    Lightroom 5
If you install in that order LR will automatically recognize Photoshop for external editing from the LR Library.

  • Unable to enable AFP file sharing, SMB won't allow connections. Is there a workaround?

After upgrading to Lion from Snow Leopard, I cannot enable file sharing.  Checking the checkbox immediately unchecks it.  When looking into this more closely, I can enable SMB, but not AFP, and my husband cannot connect to the SMB share when enabled- it just gives him a "Connection Failed" error.
When I try to enable AFP, I get this message in the console:
    1/1/12 11:04:06.084 AM com.apple.coreservicesd: launch_msg(): Socket is not connected
    1/1/12 11:04:06.000 AM kernel: nstat_lookup_entry failed: 2
When I enable or disable SMB, I get a combination of several of these messages in the console:
1/1/12 11:12:29.970 AM com.apple.smb.preferences: ERROR [launchd_client.cpp:138] failed to send GetJob message to launchd for job com.apple.smbd: Socket is not connected
    1/1/12 11:12:30.000 AM kernel: nstat_lookup_entry failed: 2
Is there a way to repair or work around this?  I bought Lion less than a month ago but can't find a way to contact Apple support directly.

I have tried numerous workarounds with no success. Everything worked fine on Snow Leopard as regards to connecting to my MBP from my Mac Mini. But with Lion, none of that works. Can we get a refund for Lion? This is atrocious!

  • Connecting two macs with afp

Both a friend and I got brand new Mac Book Pros for college but he is going to a different college so were trying to get it set up so that we can transfer files between each other and access each other's computers. I started toying with afp but have been unable to get it to work even after checking my sharing settings. On another point I have thought about creating a VPN but have soon come too realize that that could be more complicated to setup and use. Can anyone see a problem, a I missing something?

    Hi RustyBoltz,
    Welcome to the forum.
You'll both need to forward (map) port 548 in your respective routers to the internal IP of your respective Macs. Port 548 is the Apple Filing Protcol (AFP) over TCP port. Forwarding it to a computer's internal IP enables a remote user to simply click on the Go menu in the Finder menubar, select Connect to Server..., enter the ISP assigned IP address (if not known can be found by going to www.whatismyip.com) and then, after entering their username/password be able to access the files on the remote Mac and upload/download files.
Alternatively, you can use an online server like .Mac to upload files to a Public folder that can be accessed by both of you.

  • Mac OS 9 AFP file sharing volume not visible under Mac OS 10.5

An old blue-white PowerMac G3 running Mac OS 9.2.2 with file sharing on is not visible on the network for a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.5.5. – However, a PowerBook G4 with Mac OS X 10.4.11 perfectly shows the G3.
Connecting to the G3 works on the new MacBook Pro with OS X 10.5 if I use the server's IP-address (afp://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) but does not work if I use the server's name (afp://<servername>).
All other shares on the network are visible for both the MacBook Pro running OS X 10.5 and the PowerBook G4 running OS X 10.4.
Why does the MacBook Pro with Mac OS X 10.5.5 not show the G3?
Why can't I connect to the G3 using its AFP name?

I think this is because there is no AppleTalk on Leopard.
    Ah, I stand corrected........
    Go to SystemPreferences > Network
Select your connection in the left column. Advanced > AppleTalk
    Enable AppleTalk for your connection.

  • With Bluetooth file sharing being allowed in iOS6 now, is it possible to connect a Polaroid POGO printer to the iPhone and iPad now?

I know that there is a new bluetooth sharing feature enabled on iOS6 now that wasn't there before on iOS5, and I was wondering if this means my Polaroid POGO instant printer would be able to connect to the iPhone to print photos now?

But wait!  I just found this.... http://http://www.pcworld.com/article/260723/apples_ios_6_what_we_know.html
Including a copy/paste from the above link right here:
    Bluetooth File-Sharing
Also new in the latest iOS 6 beta is a function for Bluetooth sharing support for apps, according to a screenshot posted by 9to5 Mac.
    Source: 9to5Mac
Currently, iOS 5 allows you to share contacts with a car kit, send audio to a stereo, use audio/video remote controls, participate in multiplayer gaming, and establish connections to Bluetooth keyboards.
In iOS 6, however, apps may be able to request Bluetooth sharing functionality to swap photos, calendar dates, reminders, and contacts. The reported new sharing capability would be controlled in a new section of the Settings app labeled “Privacy.”  [ end quote]
Now I'd love to know if someone who actually owns the Pogo Printer and iOS 6 can get it to work.  I would immediately buy the printer which I have wanted all along except that I knew it wouldn't work with my iDevices.
