Unable to connect Seagate External HDDs to Airport Extreme

Worked the first time I connected my 2 Seagate drives (via the Belkin USB hub from the Apple Store). Now claims that the "disk needs repair" when in truth there is nothing wrong with either of them, and they work perfectly connecting directly to any Mac or PC. Any ideas/suggestions?

have you partitioned the hard drives? AEBS cannot
recognize partitioned hard drives attached to its USB
port. Must be single drive.
My experience is that multiple partitions are not a problem. I'm having no trouble with two partitions on an old Maxtor OneTouch. Each partion shows up.

  • ITunes Library access via external HDD w/ AirPort Extreme

Ok wizards...  I've read a number of posts, but can't seem to pull together the answer to my question and hoping someone's able to push me in the right direction.
I've got a Windows 7 PC with my iTunes library stored on an external HDD due to it's size.  My PC is often not at home (i travel for work a lot) and would like to have my library available to my family via my Apple TV when i'm not there.  So... I'm contemplating buying an AirPort Extreme and connecting the HDD.  I have read that the HDD must be formatted to FAT32 for it to function w/ the AirPort extreme (seemingly an arduous step, but surmountable) but can't seem to find a clear answer to the question:
Will I be able to access my Library via the Apple TV via this method?  Obviously any tips / tricks would be greatly appreciated and thanks (in advance) for anyone who can help!

No, at least not directly. You would still need an iTunes "server" to stream the iTunes media to the Apple TV. Typically a iTunes server would be a Mac or PC computer running iTunes.

  • ITunes on an external HDD and Airport Extreme BS

Ok, sorry to be boring, but I can't get this to work as I think it should.
I want to have a central iTunes library based on the USB-connected 1TB HDD, so that I can train all my Macs to reach for the files from the same place. So that I can access the same tunes and movies from my "MBP", "Intelimac" and "Intelimac2". I have copied the iTunes library from Intelimac 2 over onto the HDD, and in iTunes preferences told it to look for the files on my Airport-connected HDD - and it does. Mostly. I have 600 movie files on that HDD, but when I start up iTunes on the Intelimac and the MBP, there are only the 56 or so original movie files showing up in the Movies list. When I click on a random movie in that list, and ctrl click it, then "Show In Finder", it does indeed point to the correct folder way over there on the External HDD. So why doesn't the list in iTunes show ALL 600 movies available in that same folder?
Similarly, there are discrepancies between what shows up in iTunes lists, and what it SHOULD be showing, baring in mind there are hundreds of other media files available to be displayed and therefore played. It's as though iTunes is ignoring many of the tracks/playlists/movies in the same folder that it is indeed recognising and offering up to play...
    What am I doing wrong?
    Cheers for any help.

Just had the same problem. I found the answer in other message threads. A solution would be to click on the option button immediately when you launch iTunes. A message box will pop up instructing you to select a library. This should allow you to choose the music library from the external drive. See the url below.

It worked for me. Good luck!

  • Can't see my External HDD via Airport Extreme & powered hub

I have Windows 7 laptop and it just can't seem to detect my HDD via the Airport Extreme wired through a powered hub. If I connect HDD directly to my laptop it can see the files.
First I had problems with seeing my printer and found out that I had to install Bonjour and that worked. Is there some kind of program to make my HDD accessible?

of course there is an easy way, however, it entails erasing all data on the drive. do you have access to a spare, "temporary", drive ?

  • External HDD with Airport Extreme gets stuck

    Hi guys,
I hope you can help me. I bought an Airport Extreme last december.
The problem is that I can enter my External HDD via Windows 7. After reading and writing at the HDD, Windows Explorer get stuck, and it will say it couldn't find the path Z:\ ..... My Airport Extreme also gets stuck. I lose my signal (still connected to Airport, but not to internet) and I have to unplug it. After it the Airport will start up again and everything works.
I tried several things but it didn't work:
    - Hard reset
    - Different hard disk (with external power supply)
    - Today I went to the Apple Store in Haarlem, and I got a new Airport, but this one has the same problem!
I formatted the hard disk to FAT32.
    Please help me!

    Thank you for your reply!
My problem is slightly different. The hole AirPort is stuck, it won't do anything. Wifi stays connected, but there's no Internet connection. Also my iPad and iPhone don't have internet connection anymore.
The problem arise also when I'm just viewing pictures at the external hard disk, or just browsing through folders. The only way to get all working again is to unplug the AirPort from electricity.
It's kind a weird that Apple uses this feature as unique selling point, but unfortunately it doesn't work for PC!
    Simple and secure file sharing.
AirPort Extreme can turn your external USB hard drive into a secure drive you can share across your Wi‑Fi network and access securely over the Internet. All the documents, videos, photos, and other files instantly become available to anyone on the network, Mac and PC users alike. It’s perfect for file sharing, collaborative projects, and more.

  • I need help with connecting an external HD to Airport Extreme base station

So i have the base station set up, and it recognizes my hard drive in the airport utilities and have the file sharing turned on, but when i connect to the base station wirelessly from my macbook pro, the hard drive and base station does not show up in the shared section in my finder. Any ideas as to whats up?

I'm having a similar problem, and I hope you'll excuse my ignorance but is there a difference between rebooting and just restarting. I've done the latter (numerous times) but not the former.
I have set up my Airport Extreme Base Station to my wireless router (DSL Internet connection) and to an external hard drive (MyBook Essential 640GB with USB connection). Internet works fine.
When I plug the hard drive directly into my MacBook it recognizes it fine, I can copy files to it, add folders, explore them etc.
When I plug the hard drive into the Base station, it appears as a network drive on the side bar of my finder window, but when I click on it to open it, it is empty, it shows 0 items and the available memory, but none of the files I put on it are visible to explore.

  • Unable to connect to my house wifi (AirPort Extreme) on my dell & roku

I have setup my airport Extreme wifi, i am able to connect wifi on my samsung laptop, my dell studio 1537 and motorola droid phone. However, I am unable to connecte via wifi on my dell latitude e6430 laptop and Roku its not accepting the password i assigned, other devices wifi works except for these. i dont know what else to do.

What model is your AE? What firmware?
As a test.. do the a few more things.
    1. Give a different name to 2.4ghz and 5ghz wireless.
    2. Set a fixed channel for the 2.4ghz.. use 11, 6, 1 in that order..
    3. You may as well also remove the security whilst you do this.
So this is the most compatible you can ever make the AE.. if it fails at 2.4ghz running fixed channel with SMB compliant name and no security.. it is basically incompatible. And will never work.
If it works then immediately put the security back on.. if it then fails try wpa + wpa2 security which is not as good but not bad.. if it still fails, then the device is not compatible.
Simply buy a secondary AP to use with the non-compatible devices.. any old TP-Link N lite for $35 aprox will work great.

  • Connecting Printer and HDD to Airport Extreme (windows)

I have gone step by step and the bonjour keeps freezing when I tell it to finish the printer setup. The computer will recognize the printer but will not print. I also tried connecting a usb hdd to the AE and in the utility it shows up but not under my computer. I will say I am pretty dumb when it comes to network drives so a little help would be big!
    Thanks

  • Unable to connect to workplace vpn with airport extreme

I have a 6th generation Airport Extreme and I cannot connect to my work place vpn. In the past I used a Netgear router and it connected perfectly, but I have tried everything that I can think of to get the Airport to connect and it does not. Is it even possible to set it up to connect to a workplace vpn?

    airport extreme, Windows XP
Probably not with this combo, unless you manually forward the ports.
Apple routers do not use upnp used by PC to open ports. Therefore VPN will fail.
There are innumerable vpn so you need to find the specific ports required to be opened and manually do it.
IMHO this is where you are going to find the PC world and the Apple world do not interface very well. It is much easier to use a router.. eg your old Netgear and bridge the AE to do what it does best.. wireless to apple clients.

  • Unable to Connect to the internet using airport extrteme

I am unable to connect to the internet using airport extreme It was working fine with my G3 & G4 iBooks but now I am unable to connect. I am able to connect directly to my Desktop connecting directly using ethernet. I am also receiving a strong signal from the airport base station. Please help. Thank you.

Try the following, in order, until resolved:
    1. If the modem has a reset switch, use it to reset the modem. Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the modem to initialize.
    2. Remove power from the modem. If it has a backup battery, remove this as well. Wait 5-10 minutes. Replace the battery, and add power back to the modem.
    3. Perform a complete power recycle of your network components as follows:
    Modem/Router Power Recycling - Quick
o Power-off the modem, AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS), & computer(s); Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBS; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
If this fails to get the modem to "recognize" the Internet router, then try the "Full" version.
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling - Full
o Power-off the modem, AEBS, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBS; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
    4. Contact your ISP to have them perform a "modem reset."

  • My new Time Capsule 2T 2013 doesn't see my Seagate External HDD

    Hi,
I am new MAC user recently converted from PC. I have a Macbook Air 2013 and the new time capsule 2013 as well.
I did connect my external HDD (i.e. 1.5T Seagate HDD) in the Time Capsule USB port.
I went into the utility Airport Application to make sure "File sharing box is checked".
I went in Finder to look for my HDD and no sign of it...
I read many many discussions looking for the answer on how to make my External HDD (previously used on my PC laptop) appear on my MacBook Air throught my home network, but without success. From Apple website, it seams to be an easy task...!
Finally, I have read stuff about how the HDD is formatted. Could it be the reason?
    I need some help please!
    Thanks in advance.
    FLTower.

Finally, I have read stuff about how the HDD is formatted. Could it be the reason?
    I need some help please!
It surely is at least a major factor.. maybe several are involved.
You cannot see a disk formatted NTFS.. ie standard windows format from TC.
The disk must be plugged into the Mac and open disk utility..
You need to change the partition over to GUID from MBR.. and change the format to Mac OS extended Journaled.. or HFS+
Although FAT32 is also supposed to work.. that will lead to other issues.. don't do it.
If you format a drive with data on it.. your data is gone.. just to make sure you know that.
You can plug the drive into the computer and copy the data to another location.. and then format the drive.. and copy it back.. if you have an air without the Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter this will take aprox 1month to achieve.

  • My laptop fails to read a seagate external HDD

    Hello!
I recently tried to use a Seagate external HDD with my laptop and although the installation was successful, a message appears saying: "Location is not available. H:/ is not accessible. Access is denied."
The HDD is installed properly (the driver is shown in Drivers List) and its status on Disk Management appears to be online.
I tried the HDD in an other Computer and in a TV and it works perfectly.
I had the same problem with another Seagate external HDD a few days ago, but back then I thought I was circumstantial.
Is there anything I can do?
    Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately, Mavericks is having plenty of issues with Time Machine.
If your Mac is backing up OK to the Time Capsule, try resetting Time Machine Preferences / Options by adding the external hard drive back onto to the list of Excluded items, then saving the changes,  and then closing the preferences window.
Wait a minute and then open up Time Machine Preferences / Options once more and them remove the drive again from the list of Excluded items.....which tells Time Machine to back it up, and then Save the changes.
We're trying to avoid having to delete the Time Machine Preferences file here, since doing that will force you to set up Time Machine all over again......but it may be necessary.

  • FTP-client behind RRAS - unable to connect to external FTP servers

FTP-client behind RRAS - unable to connect to external FTP servers
A small network (10-20PCs) without any segmentation - one LAN with one Gateway.
    1. If the Gateway is some small hardware device, there are not any problems to make FTP-connections from LAN to Internet FTP-servers
    2. If the Gateway is Win2003+RRAS+NAT or Win2003+ISA2005, there are not any problems to make FTP-connections from LAN to Internet FTP-servers
    3. But if the gateway is Win2008+RAS+NAT or Win2012+RRAS+NAT, the computers in the LAN are not able to connect to Internet FTP-servers
    I made a few tests:
    1. On Win2012+RRAS+NAT
TurnOff Windows Firewall for All profiles (Domain, Private, Public) - the problem disappears, it it possible to connect to external Internet FTP-servers.
    2. On Win2012+RRAS+NAT
TurnOff Windows Firewall only for Domain profile - the problem disappears, it it possible to connect to Internet FTP-servers.
    3. On Win2012+RRAS+NAT
TurnOn Windows Firewall for All profiles (Domain, Private, Public)
But I excluded the Internal NIC in this list
Windows Firewall / Properties / Domain Profile / Protected network connections
    and the problem disappears again
    My question is:
What new Firewall rule  I have to make and where to place it (to be able to make FTP-connection from LAN to Internet FTP-servers)?
I made some attempts to allow port21, but any success.

Thank you, but did you try this ?
Can you describe in detail "exclusion rule for FTP traffic" ?!
In my previous post, I want to say that if you use Win 2008/2012 RAS+NAT as a network gateway, than it is not possible to make FTP-connections to external FTP servers from the computers behind that gateway.
And the standard attempts to make "Allow"-rules for port 21 in the gateway firewall (Win 2008/2012), do not solve the problem.
No matter which FTP-client you can try to use.
To see this problem, just make few simple tests:
    ">telnet <ftp-server> 21"
with firewall on/off  and inbound/outbound "Allow port 21 rule (All/Domain/Private/Public)"
In my country, the Government Tax Department uses FTP-protocol to collect monthly data from companies.
And it is too stupid scenario (to be a small company and to) upgrade from Win 2003 to a newer 2008/2012 and than to not be able to make all your jobs.
    -------EDIT---------
The same problem (and its solution) is described here:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/0c68aed6-e22b-4cd4-86bd-f3c767e88349/advanced-firewall-blocking-through-ftp-traffic-rras
    The magic command:
">netsh routing ip nat delete ftp"
    solved the problem for me.
And here is the description of this command - "Disables the FTP proxy on the NAT server."
