Unable to connect to background process

What is this error code all about and how can I fix it?

Try going to the Compressor menu and selecting Reset Background Processing.
If that doesn't work, try this:

  • Compressor error message "Unable to connect to background process"

My compressor application became corrupted and showed 2220 hours to convert a FCP file of 65 min to a 90 min mpeg2. After re-installing Compressor every time I try to submit a file I get the error message "Unable to connect to background process"? I tried resetting the background as instructed in the manual but continue to get the same message?
    Anybody ever encountered this problem?

Ya I am also getting the same problem I asked here on forum.
    some solution is here

but they have not worked for me.

  • Unable to connect to background process in compressor

I have tried the solutions posted in support including a complete removal of associated files and re install, but it it still unable to connect to background process.
Do anyone have a working solution? Thanks

Well, FCP 4.5 is 4-5 years old now. You can't expect them to support it forever.
Leopard only supports FCS 2 and FCS 1.5 (i.e. FCP 5.1.x) which explains why your problem wasn't fixed upon upgrading.
I used to have this problem with Compressor and solved it this way:
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/blog/posts/mycompressor_issuessolved.html
They seem to be many causes though, so I can't guarantee this will work for everyone.

  • "Unable to connect to background process" HEEEEEEELLLLLLPP!

I just bought a G5 and I transferd all my files from my G4
I'm using Compressor 1 to compress my self contained FCP movies for DVD studio...I got the dreaded "Unable to connect to background process" so I researched and found that I needed to get rid of 3rd Party Utiitys or Disk Utility..I did both and I'm still getting the warning after I re install Compressor???***???
I have spent all day tring to get this to work...and i'm about to throw
my G5 against the wall!!! What the **** am I doing wrong???
One thing I put my Apple Disk Utility in the Trash with out empting
it..Because I Can't figure out how to disable it?? can that be the problem????
I need to figure this out ASAP I have a dead line looming over me ..
My poor G4 is compressing fine ..But it will take 27 Hours to finish..
    Please Help..
    A frustrated Apple user..

    HI
The fix outlined here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93234 didn't work for me, but here's what did...
I searched QMaster in Spotlight, then right clicked on all the folders and 'revealed in finder'. I then deleted the file/folder and emptied the trash until the only QMaster entry in Spotlight was the System Preference control panel.
I also deleted the compressor pkg in the library receipts folder as mentioned in the Apple link.
Then I repaired permissions and reinstalled Compressor and QMaster from the DVD.
Then I repaired permissions, restarted and did a software update. This updated QMaster for me.
Then I repaired permissions and restarted again.
Now Compressor allows a Batch to be submitted!
    Hope this helps someone.

  • "Unable to Connect to Background Process." Revisited

    Hello,
I am getting the dreaded "Unable to Connect to Background Process."
YES I tried the apple suggestion. I also tried the hostconfig suggestion (that one was a mistake!). Archive instal on the system then a re instal of Compressor & Q Master and no luck.
I did notice one thing in activity monitor "Compressord (Not Responding)" It is hung force quit it and re launch compressor again and it dose that.
Same is true on my PowerBook G4 17 and my New MacBook Pro 17 (Witch I migrated from the PowerBook)
    I am use Compressor 2.1
Not sure where to go from here.
Thanks for any info you can give me!
    Shaun
MacBook Pro 17 inch   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   2 GB Ram 100 GB 7200 RPM Drive

Robert's suggestion above is the only thing that worked for me. I tried all of the other "fixes" on this and other threads, but nothing solved the problem until I did this:
    - Quit Compressor
    - Run Terminal and then enter...
    sudo /Library/StartupItems/Qmaster/Qmaster
    ...and enter your system password.
    - Re-Run Compressor and re-submit the batch and it
should work. Sometimes you need to wait a minute or
so for Qmaster to get "up and running" but it has
always worked for me. And Qmaster keeps running
    until you reboot.
Hopefully, this will help someone else with the same problem.

  • Dreaded "Unable to connect to background process" error

    Re: Compressor 2.0.1
A year ago I used Compressor regularly without issue. Now I get this stupid, "Unable to connect to background process" and Compressor is completely unusable.
I have read article 93234 and followed the instructions *TO THE LETTER* for Compressor 2. Still no change...same stupid message and Compressor refuses to work. I don't have anitvirus software or background disk utilities either.
I find it incredible that Apple hasn't issued an update to fix this. This is supposed to be their professional software...not some Windows crap.
Has anyone discovered what the real problem is...and how to fix this?

David Harbsmeier wrote:>So that leaves the probability that it is an issue with your system. It may be time for a clean install.
A point well taken, which I will investigate and try some basic maintenance first. My Leopard install was completely squeaky clean only about 9 months ago. Doing this again would be very time consuming.
I did try something else: I rebooted from a backup clone of my previous 10.4.11 system. And as I remembered, Compressor works flawlessly there! This at least gives me an option for using it at the moment.
Nonetheless, it must be noted this error is at the top of the list when entering Apple's Compressor support page. This suggests there is a genuine issue going on that many people are encountering. And it must be a LOT of people too... The fact that a third party "fix" utility was written seems to testify to this.
In light of my experience above, is anyone successfully running *Compressor 2.0.1 in Leopard?* If there is indeed a compatibility issue with this new OS, doing a complete system reinstall may be a complete waste of time. At least I still have the option of booting to my old system where it can be used for the present.

  • Still Unable to Connect to Background Process

I went through the motions of trashing compressor/Qmaster and re-installing as they suggest on the support page (a number of times), and I still get the same message "unable to connect to background process".
There was one point where I didn't re-install Qmaster and I was able to encode. I went back a few days later and the error message re-appeared.
    What am I doing wrong?

This is a nightmare for me right now. I have several projects that need to be produced without delay.
I have followed the instructions in the document http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93234 .
The first time I had this problem of not being able to connect to background processes this fix worked. Two days later when I go to compress again, the error message comes back up. Following the instructions in the document and two more reinstalls later it's still no better.
The console logs for Compressor don't make any sense to me:
    2007-08-02 13:30:43.073 Compressor[256] CFLog (21): dyld returns 2 when trying to load /Users/r2d2/Library/Contextual Menu Items/GraphicConverterCMI.plugin/Contents/MacOS/GraphicConverterCMI

What do these things have to do with Compressor?
    Can someone offer some insight?

  • Still getting 'unable to connect to background process" after clean install

I just did an erase and install on my system, installed FCP and DVDSP/Compressor (FCP HD), tried to export a file, and am getting that error still.
It does seem odd though that it seemed to remember my settings, because it noted that my firewire drive was missing. Also, I got that Qmaster error (An item in the Startup Items folder ("/Library/Startup Items/Qmaster") does not have the proper security settings. The first time I got the error, I hit 'decide later: and tried to export. Had a problem. Then I hit 'fix' the next time the error came up, but it did not fix the problem as Compressor will not export.
Everything else seems new though, from scratch.
    Compressor worked fine until recently.
    What do I do now?

Well somehow I'm not getting that startup error anymore. I've tried a bunch of things and one of them was, I think, to choose 'fix' in the dialog box.
In answer to the above question, Compressor version is 1.21 (was 1.2 but I upgraded as suggested in the Apple article. Final Cut Pro HD 4.5 .
I'll say it again before everyone reminds me of the need to upgrade: yes I'm aware but cannot afford it at this time.
It appears that Compressor and my internet network connection do not play well together. So I've done a bunch of tests and the only thing that seems to work is the thing suggested in this article: http://www.kashum.com/rbf.pl?c=blog&i=1152611689&referer=r .
I went into system prefs>network and under location, created a new location. Under that new location, under the 'show' menu, I chose 'network port configurations' and unchecked all the ports, and hit apply now. This basically disabled all the network ports. I restarted the computer and the compressor export worked.
It's not a total fix, but at least it's something.
Testing a little further, it appears to be the built in ethernet that's causing the problem. I unchecked each port individually, restarting the computer after each one then trying to export a clip. When I start ithe system with the ethernet unchecked, then try to export through Compressor, it works. When I then check the ethernet port and turn it back on, with FCP still running, it continues to work. If, however, I restart the computer with the ethernet checked and turned on, the compressor unable to connect message comes back, and stays there until the computer is restarted with the network port disabled.
This would make sense because not long ago I got my Qwest DSL hooked up and that was probably around the time this problem started happening. For some reason I had no issue when I had my Comcast on. Oh well. So something's definitely funky in the settings.
I"m not a programmer so I did my best with the things the article suggested - some I could figure out, some not so much, but the only thing that seems to help is this network fix.
Not sure if someone posted this article earler or if I just ran across it in my own search - will have to go back and check - but if so, thanks. I need to go back and check the points things on those posts anyway.
I'm at a loss how to fix this any other way. I guess for now I"ll have to either turn the internet off and restart the system before exporting a project, or start the system with the ethernet off and go in and turn the port on manually each time - major pain. But if only I had done this before doing an erase and reinstall! I've been down for weeks going through files, backups to get ready picking at solutions, trying to figure out how to do these fixes. The good side of this is that 1) those files needed to be backed up anc cleaned out anyway, 2) It made me pay attention to the fact that I've been sloppy about my backup system, and 3) I now know how to erase and reinstall and it's not such a scary prospect. So if something happened in the future and it required that, I'm now more prepared to handle it and know that as long as things are backed up well, the computer's not going to smoke and blow up under those circumstances. =)
Does it seem odd to anyone that I would do an erase and reinstall, boot up FCP, and it would remember my settings and send up a reminder that my firewire drive is missing? It appears that every other thing in the system is new.
After all the main software is reinstalled, I'll mess with some system updates and QT updates to see how they affect things and update you guys on that.
If anyone can suggest a more complete fix, now that I"ve narrowed it down to a network compatibility issue, please let me know. Thanks

  • Unable to connect to background process OS 10.3.9 Panther

Have tried everything I could find in discussions. Have re-installed Final Cut and DVDSP 3 times, this last go-around. Have done an erase-install of Panther. Have had to reinstall many applications. Have tried everything, except something that works.

Try this (it works for many of us with the same porblem.) Launch Terminal (Applications>Utilities>Terminal) and type this in (exactly, with spaces and capitalization): sudo /Library/StartupItems/Qmaster/Qmaster Hit return(enter) It will ask for your password. Enter that. You'll then get a message about Quartermaster services starting. Relaunch Compressor. Should work.
Having said that, be sure that when you installed DVDSP & FCP that you have also installed Quartermaster from your install disc. You also need to have installed ProApp support update for appropriate versions that you are using.
    I hope that works.

  • Unable to connect to background process.Nothing in Article ID: 93234 works!

I cannot make DVD's without this please help!!! The only changes I can think of that have happened since the last time this worked properly were:
installation of all recommended security updates
    upgrade to iTunes 7
Everything worked great a couple months ago!

HI Adam, this may not be too helpful but :
    • do you have LITTLE SNITCH or something in your system that is preventing the accesses? (guessing)
    • are you at FCP 5.1? Your sig says u are at 4.5... perhaps with all the updates in 10.4.9 with the APPLE PRO updates ..?? and compressor 2.3 is out now (for many months).
have yu checked any errors in the /var/logs .. usethe /applications/utilities/copnsole.app for this.. look in syslog and console when you do you job.. see what it says.. there may be some error indicating why this is.

  • "Unable to connect to background process" - read article, still won't work

I got the error message, checked out the discussion, went to the article published by Apple, did what it said, and made it up to re-installing Compressor from my Final Cut 5 Install disk.
However, when I try to custom install, Compressor is greyed out! Now I have NO Compressor on my computer (I deleted the application as per the instructions) and I can't seem to get it off the install disk any more!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

OK - these commands were posted here a while back now, but still work for a lot of situations. I copied them at the time, but didn't copy the name of the OP... it certainly wsn't me, that's for sure! Try these:
Launch Terminal (Application>Utilities>Terminal) and type this:
    sudo /Library/StartupItems/Qmaster/Qmaster
Then hit return, then enter your administrative password. Then you should get a message about Qmaster services starting up.
Re-launch Compressor, see if it works.
    Or
go to finder, go, go to folder
    type /etc/
    view as icons
locate "hostconfig" and COMMAND then click on fileand drag to desktop. To do this, you MUST press command FIRST then while holding it down click the file and drag to desktop – if you’ve clicked on the file first, the command click you will unselect the file. If you don't get it the first time, keep trying.
Once on the desktop, rename the file to "hostconfig.old" all lower case
COMMAND drag the newly named file back into the etc folder.
That's it! Restart your machine and start-up compressor.

  • How get Compressor to "connect to background process"?

Haven't use FCP 5.1.4 in a while. Just tried to export a program to Compressor for DVD Studio Pro. But after I loaded the program in Compressor and hit "Submit" I get a window saying, "Cannot submit batch. Unable to connect to background process."
Please tell me how to move forward.
Could this have anything to do with having just installed Leopard?
    With thanks, Duncan

Jerry, THANK YOU! The link you sent me to the reinstall instructions for Compressor was exactly the right fix. I would still be poking around in frustration if you had not responded. The program I'm editing is for a non-profit group of developmentally disabled people who are really looking forward to seeing it, so they have you to thank. And thanks again from me. Duncan

    Thanks for your response .
Sorry for delay in response. Actually I was on vacation since last few days.
