Unable to connect to Deck or Camera to capture footage. Final cut pro6

Hey guys,
I am wondering if anybody who has been in my situation or know how i can resolve my problem can help me.
I have been using my Deck to upload all my footage, in standard def, and my JVC GY HD100 camera to upload all HD footage without any problems until the last week.
I have been shooting alot of footage (SD) that needs to be captured and also master copies to be burnt to MINIDV from my computer, and i can not locate any of the devices which i would like to use.
When i open my FCP i get the following error message.
Unable to locate the following external devices:
Apple FIrewire PAL (720x576)
Dispite (on both occasions ) the JVC Camera and also the JVC BR-HD50 Deck is connected via Fire wire.
- I also changed all A/V Settings with no luck
- Tried using different FW Ports
- Trashed the preferences
- downloaded the updated Quicktime software and deleted the old versions
When i go into the System settings, the Firewire tab also says that the device is unrecognised.
- I have tried closing the mac down to reset the FW ports (many times last week, and it has also been off all weekend and it is still not allowing any connection to either camera or deck)
I do not know what else I can do to resolve the problem.
Is it a problem with Final Cut Pro, The deck, camera, or fire wire itself?
Or (as i suspect) a problem with the Mac?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Dane

Hi David
Thanks for your reply - i Should have stated that i do only use either the Cam or the Deck at any given time - i do not have more than one DV device connected to Mac at any one time.
Sorry about not including that piece of information. Have you any other ideas??? I dont want to reinstall the OS from the disc until i have tried everything else, and unless its absolutly necessary.

  • Camera's Compatable with Final Cut Pro Studio 2

So I'm looking at buying a camera and the new final cut pro studio 2. The camera I was looking at getting was the Canon GL2, but Final Cut Studio 2 doesn't list that camera as one that is compatable and they don't really list many that are. I was wondering if the camera they list that work are just recommended ones or if they are the only ones that will work. Also if anyone has any suggestions for a decent camera. I really only want to spend a little over $2000. Thanks
    - Josh -

Apple has long listed the GL1 but not the GL2 but I have no idea why. I have used the GL2 with FCP versions 1,2.3 and 4 and have Studio 2 on order and expect no problems. Using a camera for capture is pretty hard on it so I use an inexpensive mini-dv deck because I much prefer batch capturing everything and doing THAT with a camera (all the start stop and such) is even worse so I suggest a deck. I don't have Studio Pro 2 yet but I am expecting no problems....

  • Panasonic HDC-SD100 media card unable to capture on Final Cut Express 4

No problems at all with transfer to i-movie but just purchased final cut express 4 and problems with capturing from the media card. Signal system on camera is 1080/50i. Have tried setting HD and 1080/50i in the easy set up but no joy. Have tried log and transfer and see clips but on transfer message states no data. Can anyone help with the settings please?
    Many thanks in advance

    Welcome to the forum!
There are many things that could cause this, and almost all have been discussed.
    Some things to try:
    • In the Log and Transfer window, click the preferences button (the gear in the upper right). Make sure audio is set to *Plain Stereo*
    • Also in that preferences window, click the button to *Clear the Cache*
Also, what drive are you using to capture to (internal or external)? How is it formatted, and how much space is left on that drive?

  • Which camera to get for Final Cut Express 3.5HD/ upgrade to FCE 4?

    Hello everyone!
I know this has been discussed frequently, but i am sort of looking for a costum made solution for me
    Following situation: Macbook, 2.16Ghz, 2GB Ram, 320GB HDD @ 5400rpm.
I am running 10.5.3, have Final Cut Express 3.5 installed and am used to work in it,
mainly for editing video files not coming from a camcorder.
I have some experience in SD miniDV recording/editing though.
NOW I was thinking of getting a new camcorder in the 1500$ max range.
I want to edit video files, sometimes burn DVDs, at other times only to have them on the mac.
What i like about some of these new HD consumer models they can record AVCHD and mpeg2 SD in DVD quality. That should allow me to record in mpeg2 and have less hassle with importing/converting into Final Cut Express 3.5 if lower quality is fine (which it is as of now)
At the same time I could upgrade to Final Cut Express 4 and import the AVCHD files, but I still taken aback from how time and resource consuming it is. Plus it does not allow full HD 1920x1080 in FCE 4 does it?
So I was looking at the Sony HDR SR11 as a nice camcorder. Seen it live, seems decent.
On the other hand, is a camera which records in HDV a better solution for me?
I could keep Final Cut 3.5, no need to upgrade right?
Is it less hassle to transfer files to the mac and edit them?
I am very unsure which way to go right now...

    Hi Flore
This a huge debate. There are very few advantages to the new AVCHD camera's and the vgery long list of negative aspects of AVCHD camera's outweighs any usefulness of them. They are designed for Grandad to pick up and shoot good quality pictures and not for editing.
I have posted below the wiki address for AVCHD, please read the page. It is very important you do read it. It explains in depth about AVCHD.
I feel the is no real place for the hard drive based AVCHD camera. There is a place for a mini-dv tape based camera.
Life will be very hard if you go the Hard-drive camera route. Stay with tape.
Tape is cheap, hardy and easy to move around. Hard drives not so!!!
Take some time to read the following wikipedia page...PLEASE READ THIS PAGE!!!
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AVCHD
You will see that AVCHD is not all the bee's knee's.
I personally hope it dies an extremly painful agonising drawnout death.
AVCHD has no place in the professional domain.

  • Connect Handycam Sony DCR-DVD101 to MBP and Final Cut

Hi everyone. I´m trying to connect my handycam to a MacbookPro to capture some video in Final Cut Pro. The problem is that the handycam only have USB cables to connect to the macbook. Do I have to buy another cable with Firewire?... Is Final Cut only compatible with Firewire?. what can I do? Please I would appreciate some advice...
    Thanks in advance.

DVD Camcorders are not compatible with Final Cut Pro. You can still import the footage with an analog video input device which converts the analog output of your camcorder to firewire. I don't have any experience with these.
As far as consumer camcorders go, if it has a hard drive, flash memory, or DVD to record the video, it most likely won't work with Final Cut (Pro or Express) or iMovie.

  • What video cameras are compatible with Final Cut Express?

I live in Japan and was thinking of buying a Victor " Full High Definition" video camera (1920x1080). The only thing I was warned about by the salesperson is that unless I have a Blue-Ray DVD recorder/player, I will never be able to enjoy true Full HD after burning my video to a DVD. I guess regular DVD recorders/players can't support it yet.
I have searched to find a page that tells me what video camera is compatible with my iMac G5, but no luck. Any ideas on how to find out before buying a video camera? I would appreciate anyone's advice.
    Thanks, Larry in Japan

Hope you don't mind me asking why? - As long as they've got a F/W connector how does the source media make any difference? - In fact, I would think that shuttling around would be faster with HD's or DVD's.....
I also believe the salesperson was trying to say that he's going to need a BluRay deck in order to be able to view his HD material on an appropriately equipped TV - Which is correct, no?
Thanks in advance for any comments,

  • TS3850 I am using a Sony HBR -VLU camera to import into Final Cut 10. Plugging into an I MAc that doesn't have a firewire port. The camera is not being recognized by the computer. The camera is set to play tape too. Why is camera not recognized?

I am trying to import from the camera into an I-MAC. I'm told the I-mac does not have the firewire port, but has thunderbolt. Is the only way to get video from the camera via a firewire port? Is someone giving me bad information as to the firewire port not being on the I-MAC? The camera is not being recognized. Thanks in advance.

Apple has moved on from Firewire and the current iMacs (and most MBPs) have Thunderbolt, USB3 and USB2.
There are Firewire toThunderbolt adaptors. Here's one. You also want a four pin to nine pin FW cable to run from your camera to the adaptor.

  • HELP: I have an impossibly long rendering time after converting .MP4 files from Go Pro Camera to .MOV on Final Cut Pro 7. PLEASE ADVISE.

I am working on a project and shot guerilla style footage with a Go Pro camera, which produced .MP4 files incompatible with FCP7. When I converted the files to .MOV, I realized the rendering time in the sequence editor is impossibly long. I am working with a deadline and the rendering time exceeds the deadline, let alone editing time. Suggestions???

Telling us you converted to .mov doesn't tell us much. MOV is a container that supports a very wide range of codecs. It is the specific CODEC that matters.
You most likely did not convert the material to a FCP7 native format. ProRes is recommended and, given the compression of the GoPro, ProRes LT would be the best choice.
Use Compressor to convert everything to ProResLT and life will be much simpler.

  • Supported camera final cut pro6

For FCP 1,2,3,4 and 7 I can find supported camera's.
    But I can't find a list with supported camera's for FCP6.
Where can I find these list?

Not sure there is one.  But anything compatible with 4 should still work.  The only thing I know they added in fcp7 was compatibility with avchd cameras like the panasonic hmc150.  I used to have to use my laptop (intel) to transcode material from the hmc150 to use on my tower (g5) before I got a new tower a year and a half ago.
I'd use the fcp7 list and then post a question about any specific camera you're considering regarding fcp6 compatibility here and maybe on creative cow.  if it's not listed for fcp7, it's almost deflnitely not going to work in fcp6.
And remember that there are 3rd party utilities like magic bullet grinder and clipwrap that you can use to transcode or simply rewrap material that's not immediately compatible with fcp6.

  • Migrated Word now wants to connect to scanner and camera - slows launch

I have a new MBA, running the latest 10.6. I have migrated my apps and am checking each -- so far, so good, until I came to MS Word (2004).
When I open any .doc (or simply launch Word) it takes a l-o-o-o-o-n-g time, then puts up a dialog box that says "Unable to connect to scanner or camera. Check the connection and reinstall driver if necessary."
I don't have a connected camera or scanner!?!?! I've looked for some setting in Word (or in the OS) that would make this system think that it should look for a scanner but, so far, have not spotted what could be causing this. (Word's Help was not very Helpful.)
A couple of threads here suggest, to get an unrecognized scanner to be detected, going to [Word] Insert/Picture and then selecting the "From scanner or camera..." option. That is supposed to "jog" Word into bringing up a "Devices" list which can then be used to fix the settings. When I try this, nothing happens (no doubt because of the state that Word is in, due to its non-detected scanner/camera situation).
How can I get Word to stop looking for a scanner/camera device on launch?

    baltwo wrote:
Move the com.microsoft.Word.plist to the Desktop from your Preferences folder, restart, and launch Work '04. That should do the trick. If so, move the deleted file and reset your Word prefs. Works here.
That was a great suggestion. Sadly, it didn't make the message go away. ;-<
I even tried a couple of other things, while I was in that Preferences folder, on subsequent restarts (each):
    .. copied over the com.microsoft.Word.plist file from the Mini (which is also running 10.6 and which was the source of this copy of Word);
.. copied over (replaced) all the com.hp.xxx plist files (since they are most likely the suspect scanner-related objects ... from a far distant scanner, now gone)
But none of these make a difference -- Word still gives the error message on launch.
Any other things I might try?

  • Camera/final cut connection problem

I can't get my camera to communicate with final cut. I have a new macbrookpro with final cut 7, a new, calumet 4-9 pin firewire and a 2006 digital panasonic video camera that has worked with older final cut systems on different macs, no longer available to me. The firewire fits the camera and computer but the computer and final cut don't recognize the input. I've tried several combinations of connecting the camera, then turning computer on, etc. There's no other mac around to test the firewire on. Suggestions?

We've successfully used these kinds of cables for old FW to FW800 on our newest Intel Macs but not to a portable.
If the device does not show up at all on the Macintosh, you can look at only three possible failures: the cable, the camera's port, or the Mac's port. You should be able to test all with another Mac and a known FW device.

  • Final Cut suddenly unable to capture from any source

I suddenly started having an inability to capture in Final Cut. I have always used Final Cut Express and a Sony handicam and a firewire port.
2 weeks ago when I went to capture I started getting “dropped frames” error messages. As you know, unchecking that feature in FCE or FCP simply results in video and audio that don’t match up. Anyway I tried that and it didn’t work.
I have used two other firewire cables
    I am using OS 10.5.8
in trying to fix this problem, I upgraded to Final Cut Express 4 (from 2.0)
    I trashed preferences.
I used disk repair and verify permissions
    I booted up and down
then I gave up on the sony handicam and connected my G5 to a JVC editing deck I have, the JVC SR-DVM70.
When I connect my G5 to my JVC deck through the firewire In/Out port, I get the message, “VTR OK” so the connection is there.
When I hit “play” in Final Cut, it does control the deck and makes it play—but I do not see the video in Final Cut; I only see it on the JVC deck monitor.
When I hit “stop” it does not make the JVC deck stop. The only function it seems to control is simply “Play.”
Then when I go to capture, I get the message: "unable to capture because there is no video."
I have tried several different “Easy Setup” settings, including several firewire settings (including basic firewire) and several NTSC settings and a PAL setting.
    Weird.
anybody out there a genius with this?

There is a separate forum for FCE.
Make sure you are using the correct HDV settings in FCE and that the camera is set to output HDV and not downconvert.

  • Unable to Capture Footage, File Error: Unknown file

Alright, I've been at it for hours trying to figure out what the heck is going on. I have been able to capture footage before but not with this version.
-I have already repaired disk permissions twice, ran disk warrior also.
-I have it on the basic DV NTSC Setting, which worked perfectly on the laptop, but I need to edit this project on the tower.
-Have been through numerous settings and no go.
-I can control the deck/camera but it will not control the camera when trying to capture
Running Final Cut Pro HD 5 completely updated with the most recent software.
Need some help, this project cant be delayed this long.

  • Is the Sony HDR-FX7 HDV Camera compatible with Final Cut Pro 5 or 6?

Has anyone gotten this to work correctly. I have read in a few forums that the camera is not supported by FCP and I checked on the compatibility list and it is not there. iMovie sees this camera and can capture from it.
I can not get FCP 6 to recognize the camera. I set device control to Sony HDV and I am only able to capture using the Intermediate Codec. When I switch to the HDV codec it only will record for a second then fail. Although I can capture with some limitations I still can't get FCP to recognize the camera and therefore video from the timeline won't playback on the camera.
I really don't want to have to buy a hdmi capture card or buy a HDV deck to get this to work. If anyone knows any workarounds it would be greatly appreciated.
If there are none any suggestions on a cheap compatible hdv deck or camera to get footage in and out would be great.
    Thanks.

I have never had a problem with my internal boot drive either capturing DV footage and since HDV shares the same data rate I didn't think it would be an issue.
Then you are lucky my friend. If you wish to keep tempting fate that is your choice. I am simply suggesting that you follow the suggested setup so that you could eliminate a possible problem.
I do think there are compatibility issues.
This may be the case. Have you used an easy setup that matches your cameras settings and then changed control to firewire basic as I suggested earlier?
I have manually set up the capture settings and it will only work to the intermediate codec.
Manually settings are not always the best method. Try an easy setup as I suggested earlier.
I have narrowed it down to 2 things, either it's a Final Cut 6 issue on an Intel Mac, or it's just not compatible (Apple does not list it in it's Compatible Hardware List).
What I am trying to do is to narrow it down further. I have given you suggestions but it does not appear that you have tried them. If you try these we can continue to eliminate until you have an answer.
Please post back when you have tried my previous suggestions.
