Unable to connect to network with Safari and Software Update

A user I support has encountered a problem with networking. He is unable to connect to the network with Safari and Software Update, but IS able to connect and surf with Foxfire and some other programs. Another unusual symptom is that he actually can connect to one web site (which is in his Bookmarks Bar) with Safari, but can't connect to anything else. He's also unable to navigate off of that one site he connects to. When he runs Network Diagnostics, he gets all green lights (no problems). He has fixed permissions, deleted Safari Cache and .plist, rebooted - not fixed yet. He's using 10.4.8 on a PowerPC G4. Any ideas appreciated (this is the wierdest I've seen in a while!).

Here's what he did. After reading your post, he created another location in his network preferences, entering EXACTLY the same info that was in his old location (he even used the old DNS addresses), except using a new location name. Then he chose the new location and "everything worked". It's one of life's great mysteries. Thanks for your help - it is appreciated.

  • Safari and software update won't connect with 10.6.5 and 10.6.6

Downloaded 10.6.5 and 10.6.6 to my 4 month old Macbookpro but safari and software update wouldn't connect. Camino worked fine. I'm back on 10.6.3. It works fine but I would like to update. Suggestion?

In response to how did I update if safari and update didn't work with 10.5 and 10.6. Your question is silly. I updated from 10.6.4 and as I said Camino works fine and always has.

  • Mail, Safari and Software Update won't launch?

My Mail, Safari and Software Update apps don't launch after my last Software Update installed Quicktime 7.0.4 and iTunes 6.0.2. During that update (Jan 12, 06) I got the spinning ball and ended up restarting because nothing was happening...
That's when my apps stopped opening.
This is what Console says when I try:
dyld: /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail truncated or malformed library: /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/Versions/A/WebKit (load command 0 fileoff plus filesize extends past end of the library)
dyld: /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Safari truncated or malformed library: /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/Versions/A/WebKit (load command 0 fileoff plus filesize extends past end of the library)
dyld: /System/Library/CoreServices/Software Update.app/Contents/MacOS/Software Update truncated or malformed library: /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/Versions/A/WebKit (load command 0 fileoff plus filesize extends past end of the library)
So it appears I have a "malformed library", what should I do?
    Thanks.
Powermac g4, 400 mhz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Sonnet processor (1 GHz) and 1.5 GB RAM

Yes, it looks like something is not right with /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/Versions/A/WebKit. The message "filesize extends past end of the library" sounds like there might be some corruption of the filesystem, although I certainly could be wrong about this. (The filesystem is the operating system's mechanism for determining where files actually start and stop on the harddrive.)
The first thing to try would be to attempt to repair the filesystem. This can be accomplished by booting of your Panther Install CD and using Disk Utility to do a Repair Disk. There are good instructions for that at Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption. See the section on Repair Disk.
If that does not work, I suggest that you try to replace /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/Versions/A/WebKit. If you have another computer with the same operating system, you could connect via target disk mode and copy over the good folder to replace the bad one. Alternatively, you could do an Archive and Install.

  • Unable to connect to disscusions with Safari

    Hi,
This has happened quit a bit over the last week or so. I try to get to the discussions, http://discussions.apple.com/ with Safari and I get the discussions temporarily away page. I then use Firefox and get in. In fact I'm entering this in Firefox while Safari is telling me the discussions are not available.
Clearing cookies seem to let me get in with Safari but as I said this has happened a lot over the past week or so.
Any ideas, something at my end or what?
    Thanks

Not you, it's been happening to a lot of people, just ride it through and wait till the furniture has been moved into, place. There are lots of oddities happening lately, it may be connected with the new Communities or it may just be overloaded servers, but it's definitely not just you.

  • Unable to connect to network with a new Laptop. ( WRT160n v3.0.02/3 and WRT54G2 v1.0.01)

    Hello,
I have never had problems with a Linksys router before until I recently got a new laptop. It was fine for the first few days, but then the connection started dropping and wouldn't come back unless I turned off the router and back on. This started increasing in frequency, so I decided to tweak with my router to find the problem and see if I could solve it.
This was for a WRT160n v3.0.02 I looked up several suggestions online and decided to update the firmware to v3.0.03 This seemed to only make it worse as I could no longer connect, and when I turned the router off and back on it would allow me in for about a minute and drop me right away. I decided to do a factory reset and set up the network all over to see if this would fix it. Nothing.
I started tweaking with the settings, and came across some posts here such as this one, started tweaking with the channel settings and everything. Nothing. If anything I somehow made it worse since now instead of dropping repeatedly it wouldn't connect at all except for about a minute after restarting router, then it would drop completely (I would either get the limited access notification or I simply couldn't connect and windows said to unplug the access point. (...again)
Fed up, I recalled I had another Linksys router that I wasn't using in storage, a WRT54G2v 1.0.01 so I set that up, no problems... at first. All other devices picked it up right away, but once again, my new laptop decides it's too good for the freaking network and drops it repeatedly telling me there's a problem with the access point.
So at this point I'm thinking it might NOT be my network, but my wireless card or something, I uninstalled and reinstalled, updated drivers, (I use a Realtek RTL8723AE Wireless LAN 802.11n PCI-E NIC) I even came across this article and disabled browser service and NETBios (including all other devices on my network). It brought back the network on my laptop for a bit, only to smugly come crashing down again.
I've tried setting a static IP, I set my priority to highest on QoS, I've tried factory resetting both routers TWICE. I'm at my wits' end and I dunno what else to try, I'd greatly appreciate any help I can get.
I have a cable connection, modem works just fine, signal is fine if I connect it directly to modem, also if I connect it through the router, no problems whatsoever, the only problem seems to be the wireless on my new device. OTL

You may try this link below on how to determine the correct  MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) size. I hope this will help.

  • Safari and Software Update won't connect to the internet

I'm running OS 10.4.11 and have installed a new router which works fine on my G5 running the same OS. However when I now Try and run Safari I get the Message: Safari can’t open the page “http://www.google.com/” because Safari can’t connect to the server “www.google.com”. and When I try and run Software Update I get the Message that it cannot connect to the server. Firefox runs fine on the same computer has anyone any idea please? or suggest a fix

Fixed it myself. Under network settings "Auto Proxy Discovery" was enabled. When I turned this off everything started working again. Not sure how this was enabled in the first place.

  • Wireless is connected, but cannot use safari, itunes, software update

Im having trouble with my macbook pro right now. The network diagnostics show that my connection is fine, but safari won't connect to any sites.
With safari, it doesn't say anything about not being able to connect, it just shows the loading icon on the url bar and a white page.
iTunes won't connect, and same with Software update. I do not have any antivirus right now.
My time machine is working, but that uses a different router(the one on the time machine)
Ive tried resetting safari among other things and nothing has worked. Any suggestions?

Do you use the right channel and right encryption settings?
    This should be checked!
It should be able to change the WLan channels in device manager -> WLan card -> Properties -> Advanced tab
But I would also recommend disabling the encryption and password in router settings and to connect to Open Wlan of course this should be done only for testing purposes if the notebook would be able to connect to the open router, then this would mean that you used a wrong password.
How about WLan driver update? Did you update the WLan driver? If not do that!

  • Safari and Software Update break - at the same time

a 2.4Ghz MBP with 10.5.6, Firefox loads web pages fine but Software Update and Safari never run, under any circumstance, even on fresh accounts on the machine.
    Tried:
    a. reinstalling Safari from the retail Leopard DVD
    b. DU run permissions and verify disk
    c. drag copy a running Safari app from a known similiar working Mac laptop
    d. delete every Safari related folder on the affected account
Im installing this from an image I made on a MBP of similiar vintage, imaged with the Apple retail Leopard DVD
Any ideas why Safari wont repair ?

    HI Chris,
For Software Update, try deleting this file. com.apple.softwareupdate.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your Mac. Go to the Apple Men/Software Update... and see if it works as it should.
For Safari, try deleting this file. com.apple.safari.plist Same path as before. If that doesn't help...
If your Software Update is working now, try downloading and installing the 10.5.6 combo update, even though you are running 10.5.6 already. http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10-5-6_ComboUpdate
*"It includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility and security of your Mac."*
Run Disk Utility and repair disk permissions after the update.
If you still can't use Software Update ...
Perhaps an Archive an Install is needed.
    To reinstall Mac OS X:
Insert the Mac OS X Install Disc and double-click the Install Mac OS X icon.
Follow the onscreen instructions. In the pane where you select the destination disk, select your current Mac OS X disk (in most cases, it will be the only one available).
Click Options. *If you want to save your existing files, users, and network settings, select “Archive and Install,” and then select “Preserve Users and Network Settings.”* If you want to erase everything on your computer and reinstall Mac OS X, select “Erase and Install.” You can’t recover erased data.
    Click Continue.
Click Customize to select which parts of Mac OS X you’d like to install, or click Install to perform a basic installation (recommended).
Note. You can only reinstall Mac OS applications from the machine specific disk(s) that came with the iMac.

  • Safari and Software Update won't launch on Macbook

I have a macbook (OS X 10.4.11) that I haven't used in a while. I tried to use it today but Safari crashes as soon as I launch it. I can't even view a page--Safari and its menu appear momentarily on the top bar and then disappear. Software Update does the same thing. Skype didn't launch the first time I tried, but it did after doing some disk repair. I don't want to use the Mac CD to take it to factory settings because I don't want to lose the Microsoft Office I have on it. Is there a way to make these programs work?

When you boot up the Mac with the install disc in, hold the C key for around 10-20 seconds. THEN let go of the C key. I notice this when doing this on my Mac. I would hold down the C key for a minute, and give up cause I think it just froze, and let go of the button only to find out that it didn't really work cause I had to let go of the C key. It also takes a while to boot up too. I'm not sure about the next part, but I think it goes like this. It will show you a installation screen, and on the top bar, you click utilities and Disk Utility. I don't remember the whole process cause I haven't done it in a while.

  • Safari and Software Update errors.

Hello, I was just browsing the internet on all my regular sites, MySpace, YouTube etc. But when I click on my Facebook tab in my bookmarks bar, it stays on the blue loading block for ever. I have noticed that every other site I go on works fine at a normal speed, but it seems it can't load up any links directing to Facebook.
Also, I usually check Software Update once a day and normally when there is new software it takes a few minutes to show up, however, I opened it today to be confronted by an error message - "A networking error has occurred: timed out (-1001). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again."
This problem came up on my PowerBook G4 Aluminum. It's the 15" 1GHz model. I'm running 10.5.8
I have reset my modem, restarted my computer, done all the obvious tricks to get it back running fine again.
    Any help is largely appreciated.

Make sure you have the latest version of Adobe's Flash Player.

  • Safari and Software Update

We have an iMac that was having some problems and we decided to wipe the hard disk, reinstall 10.7.4 and restore user data from Time Machine. We did so, then upgraded via Sofware Update to 10.7.5.
We ended up with Safari 5.1.7. Unfortunately, for reasons I do not understand, it crashes hard on launch. (It looks like a selector being sent to a class for which it is unknown.)
Software Update says (unbelievably!!) that everything is up to date. I.e., Software Update doesn't seem to understand that the Safari version can be updated to 6.0 (or better, 6.0.1).
If I copy Safari 6.0.1 from another system to this iMac, it runs fine, but the system won't let me use it to replace the current (and obsolete) version. [i.e., I can run it from Desktop, but can't move it to Applications.]
How can I get a valid installer for Safari 6.0.1? Support wants me to go to Software Update, which isn't doing the job. [And for that matter, WHY isn't it working?]

I tried that, but it didn't work - perhaps because I (mistakenly) installed the 10.7.5 Supplemental update first. I agree that the next step is probably to try reinstalling Lion via recovery mode. But I'll probably wait a bit, because I have a temporary work-around in place.
The workaround is to copy Safari 6.0.1 the problem system, putting it someplace OTHER than the Applications folder (since Lion won't let me put it there), then replace the dock's Safari icon with one that points to 6.0.1.

  • Video Gaming troubles with MacBook and software updates.

I've got a question again about The Sims 2 for Macs. I've got a MacBook and have had it for almost a year now. I got the Sims 2 for it when I first got it and it has always worked perfectly on the computer. Well a few days ago, I ran a software update for the first time in a while and now the game won't work at all! When I double click to open the game, the CD drive doesn't even run. The icon bounces at the bottom of the screen for a minute then disappears.
The updates installed were for OS X 10.4.10, Security Update, QuickTime, Front Row, iTunes and an Audio Update. I don't think it's a coincidence that the game quit working as soon as I installed these updates. DOes anyone know which one could have caused it and/or is there a way to undo a software update without restoring the whole system?

Sorry, I cant help much, but this is the intel iMac forum. You may have more luck in the correct MacBook forum.
