Unable to connect to other computers (or devices attached) on my LAN

I have recently installed Aireport Extreme as a wireless device connected to Verizon Internet gateway. I have two computers (one window and other vista) and i can connect to internet from each computer. But i am unable to share files or printers as i can't see the other computer when i enter the IP address - windows comes back with unable to find message. I had no problem sharing files or printers on other computers on the LAN with Linksys router. is there a setting in the config that is incorrect. Appreciate response!!

Check that the computers are part of the same network. I am not familar with the AE Extreme so I am assuming that it is discoverable. I would also check that the properties for your Desktop WiFi Adapters have both Discovery Driver, Discovery Mapper, and Discovery Responder checked. Also a good idea to see if the Router has issued a IP licence to these computers. Solutions are simply a process of elimination. On the router there may be a setting that switches LAN Ping OFF and if that is the case computers on your network will not respond to a Ping.

  • Unable to Connect to Other Computers on Network

We have a small network of 4 Macs and suddenly one of our computers cannot connect to other computers on the network. We have file sharing turned on all the Macs, and the other computers can connect to this G4 733 DA, but the G4 DA can "see" the other computers, but when I try to connect I get the message that the connection failed.
Is there any solution other than reloading Tiger? In system 9 it was simple to just reload the networking extension if it was damaged, but I am not sure for what to search to fix this problem.
    G4/1GHz, 7600 w/G3/500 MHz , G4/733 MHz Server   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Since all the computers are "seeing" each other, I would try to do a "Repair Permissions" from the Disk Utility on the G4 DA...and, if that doesn't help, try the "Repair Disk" option before reloading Tiger. Sometimes, when OS X can't access system files properly, you see "strange" errors like these.

  • Can't Connect to Other Computers on My Network

I am unable to connect to other computers on my network. When I go to Finder/GO/Network the next window which should display the servers on the network, opens momentarily and then closes. After that, nothing happens when I repeat the sequence. I am able to get out on the internet but am unable to connect to the other computers on the network, so I think my Linksys Wireless-G Cable Gateway is working. The computer is an intel Mac Pro running OS 10.4.11. My wife is able to connect to other computers on the network with her iMac running OS 10.3.9. Any suggestions for remedying this would be greatly appreciated.

Hopefully Apple will come to your aid
    • Make sure all the computers on your LAN are on AppleTalk w/ File Sharing: On
    • Check the Firewall settings of all workstations
    • Confirm that your User or Admin account has sufficient Privileges to access sharepoints
    • Reboot all machines to flush their DHCP lease or IP bottleneck
P.S. there are known issues currently with Leopard File Sharing to-and-from pre-Leopard OS X's. I do not know why your window magically closes itself. Last, run Software Update. Good luck.

  • My husband has a Mac mini, vintage 2009, running Snow Leopard. All other computers and devices in the house are able to connect to our wireless network, but since I upgraded his computer to Snow Leaopard  it won't connect. What is the problem?

What am I missing here. I'm sure it is some kind of sitting that is not right.

Power off and then back on the router
What happens when you enter the network's PW?
Try forgetting/deleting the network if necessary. To do that go to System Preferences>Network>wifi>Advanced and select the network and click on the minus sign

  • Can see but not connect to other computers on my home network

New laptop running 8.1 replaces crashed one (also ran 8.1). After setup, can see the other computer on Home Network (uses Windows 7). That one can also "see" the new laptop. ( Both computers appear in the network folder). Neither
will connect to the other. Get "cannot access message, check name etc."
Both computers are in same Homegroup, tried all the tests mentioned in support . . .everything seems set properly. Ran through all the network and homegroup diagnostics fine. Tried connecting with both firewalls disabled.
Is there a solution I'm not aware of? Others seem to have similar if not identical problem.

    Hi wrkeen,
Please share more details about this issue:
    1. Provide the error messages for better analyzation.
    2. What solution have you done to test the homegroup?
If we enable the network discovery, we will be able to find other computers or devices on the network.
Please take the following steps for troubleshooting:
    1. Run the network troubleshooter to exclude the network issues. For more information, please refer to the following article.
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/using-the-network-troubleshooter-in-windows-7
    2. Go through this path Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings and check if we correctly configure file sharing and other settings.
Please take a look at the following article about troubleshooting file sharing.

  • Cannot Connect to other computers on my router

I have a u.s.robotics sureconnect 9106 (adsl modem and router - the same as
9105) and wanted to hang another pc with xp pro to my xp pro machine. So
i connect the two via ethernet cable to the router, but i am able
to ping the other machine and to use ftp but neither of the two can see
the other in windows xp pro
the same with a osx machine witch i connect for checking itunes or sharefolders
I also try my xbox with xbmc for sharing and streaming my itunes songs
but it doesn't work at all, even after i open the two ports asked by
itunes - i also deactivated outpost but that neither helped - the
strange thing is that in the outpost/system/lan-settings outpost can't
    even see the other machine
I can also ping it and ftp, but nothing more
when i try to connect then outpost ask me if i want to allow it and
afterwards when i try to close itunes then it says that another user
is in my library but the xbmc says that it couldn't connect...
    what have i forgotten?
I not read here that the port 5353 should be udp and i have only give the tcp port free but after changing to udp itunes not even told me on the exit that another user has access to my database
ah well i have on my router a virtual server with the same ip as my
computer (192.168.1 ist the modem 2 ist my computer and the virtual
server and 3 is the other computer) and there i set the port holes for
the nat service (itunes etc) BUT i think because of that i have
in the network connections not even a internet-gateway but only
    the ethernet connection
I installed xp pro new, but then the gateway only appears for some
seconds and then disappear. But lately for a while it appears but after
some time it disappears - maybe its because i try this time not to give
my machine a fix ip and then its possible that the gateway appears when
I have another ip than the virtual server on my router, and that then
outpost also recognize the other computer?
any idea what i did wrong, or i have forgotten, i really haven't a clue
what to to and i never haven't heard that when you have a virtual
server (nat) then its not possible not to connect to others
    computers...
    thanks for your patience

Bought my iMac in February and worked fine up until about a month ago. I have assigned a manual IP address outside the range of other devices in my network (e.g. 192.168.0.10) and this seems to do the trick (most of the time). The problem I had was the self assigned IP address wasn't in the usual range for my router so while I was connected to Airport and the internet I couldn't view any webpages. Had to do the same thing to my Macbook which I purchased about a month ago.
The strange and very frustrating thing is sometimes it doesn't recognise my preferred network but then when it asks me to join a network, my network appears! When I try to connect and confirm password, connection times out. Whats that all about?
The bottom line is the assigned IP solution doesn't always work but it seems a combination of issues rather than one. None of the other devices on my network (ReadyNas Duo, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii etc) have issue connecting to the router using DHCP but for some reason Airport has trouble dealing with this and assigning a correct IP or can't find the network all together.
Only thing I can think is its some Airport update that has caused these intermittent issues and realy hope they fix it soon.
So no update but just wanted to share my experiences in what seems a very wide scale issue...

  • Connecting to other computers on the network

I just replaced an older Belkin wireless router with the new Airport extreme. I like it very much but I cannot now figure out how to connect to other computers on the network. With the old router I just clicked on network in the finder window and all the other computers on the network showed up an dI could click on one to connect. Now I see notheng. Any ideas????

I'm getting the same problem. I used to have the snow AEBS, but about 2 weeks ago I got the new one. Never had a problem connecting to my other macs in the house through network in the finder... now, no other machines show up.
Because there's no communication or recognition of devices through AEBS, wireless printing goes out the door too. My printer is plugged in by ethernet to my house network. If I am connected by ethernet to my network, I can print, but if it's wireless, nope.
Today, I got the apple tv. I was super excited unboxing it, hooking it up... and then when I go to sync up through itunes... oh wait, it doesn't show up in the devices list because of my AEBS problem.
Anyone have any ideas? I would love to play around with apple tv so please help... thanks.

  • We have a PC with iTunes that needs the hard drive reformatted. Right now, it can't connect to other computers on the network. Can I save my music to a thumb drive, then re-load when the computer is reformatted?

We have a Windows XP desktop with iTunes for windows. The hard drive needs to be reformatted. Right now, the computer will not connect to other computers on the network. Can I save my iTunes songs to a thumbdrive, then re-load after reformatting?  How do I do it?

Copy the entire iTunes folder out to the drive. If it is too big to go as one copy stuff over to another computer in batches. It is important to have not only the media but the library file in order to properly restore your library.
See also this User Tip. Assuming the machine won't connect to the internet you could download the SyncToy installer on another machine and then transfer it with the thumb drive. If it will connect to the net don't forget to deauthorize the machine before reformatting the hard drive.

  • Connect as... no longer works. Cannot connect to other computers on my home network.

I have a home network and it's been unchanged for years. Never had any issue with connecting to other computers, all of which are Macs running OS X. Now, if I click Connect As, nothing happens. Double-clicking the other computer in the Finder's sidebar or using Go To Server, etc. yields nothing. Even odder; the other machines no longer see me at all. No one has any Firewall on. File sharing is on for all machines. We're all on the same subnet and the same network, yet every other machine can connect to one another but not mine. Thoughts? Restarting has not helped. Thanks.

If you are getting the error message that the server won't allow any more users to connect, and to try again later, this seems to be a problem with AFP sharing in Lion.
The workaround for this so far is to go to System Preferences > Sharing > File Sharing and click on Options...  On that window, turn OFF "Share files and folders using AFP" and turn ON "Share files and folders using SMB (Windows)" Click Done to go back to the sharing window and you should see a green dot followed by "Windows Sharing: On"
    Give that a try.

  • Do I need to have Airport Express to connect to other computers on our homer network?

Do I need to have Airport Express to connect to other computers on our homer network?

Not necessarily. You could use the "Create Network" feature of your MBP's built-in AirPort card to provide an Ad-hoc wireless network for local wireless-capable computers to connect to.

  • I am able to connect to my wifi network but am not able to connect to other computers on my network

I am able to connect to my wifi network but am not able to connect to other computers on my network. I have installed windows 7 on parallels desktop, from windows i am able to access my network computers. But from Mac i can only access internet but not network computers Please help

Ok, well if you're sure that there are shared folders on your PC's, then try this:
Click somewhere on desktop, so you're in finder > Go > Connect to Server (shortcut to all of this is Command + K) then type in: smb://ipaddresshere
    eg:
    smb://192.168.1.7
Then either connect as guest, or login with the PC's (not your mac's) username & password.

In what way are you trying to connect? File sharing? Printer sharing? Screen sharing? Something else?
How are your computers connected to this network? What happens when you try to connect to them?
    Best of luck.

  • Cannot connect to other computers over wireless on my AEBS N base-station

    10.5.1
Cannot connect to other computers on network. Can connect to Airport disk, but not my desktop (iMac G5) or vice-versa (Macbook). Can see it on finder sidebar, but clicking on it just "connects" for hours, with no success. Finder-->connect to server does not work with IP or name.local. Tried rebooting, deleting kerberos, deleting .mac certificates, unplugging, prayer and animal sacrifice. No luck. Anyone have any suggestions? Firewalls are both turned off, BTMM turned off, airport on, both connected etc. Console logs are spitting out LOTS, I can post if necessary.

  • Cannot connect to other computers on network. HELP!

Using a G-5 dual 2.0 with 10.4.10 and I am having issues with networking and connecting to other computers on my network. This is an intermittent problem. When I try to connect <go> <connect to server><browse> the computers on the network do not show up(in the network window) all the time. Sometimes they will if I restart and sometimes not. Why is this happening? I have 4 other machines and they are all fine. I can connect to if but not from it.
    TIA
