Unable to connect to SQL Server : bad return code or status
When attempting to connect to a server running Windows Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2008 R2 the following error message is returned.
Error Connecting to Database
A SQLServer request resulted in a bad return code or status but no error message was returned.
The client is pointed to another similar server running Windows Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2008 R2, a connection can be made successfully. Looking at the registry both servers have the same version of MDAC 6.1.7601.17514.
UPDATE
The SQL Server Error Log records the following information.
Message
Length specified in network packet payload did not match number of bytes read; the connection has been closed. Please contact the vendor of the client library. [CLIENT: 10.1.30.106]
Message
Error: 17836, Severity: 20, State: 17.
It seems like the client is actually reaching the SQL Server but failing to login.
The version of MDAC on the server doesn't matter. It is the client version of MDAC/WDAC that is used. Do you know what SQL Server API the client application is using (i.e. ODBC, OLE DB, SqlClient, JDBC, etc)? You might try a simple connection
test from ODBC data source manager or script.
I think this may be error message from a Sybase client. That would explain a lot.

Unable to connect to SQL Server 2008 from OBIEE 11G(on 64 bit Linux box)
We are unable to connect to connect to SQL Server 2008 from OBIEE 11G which is on 64 bit Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
Infrastructure: OBIEE 11.1.1.5 64bit, on 64 bit Red Hat Linux Enterprise Linux 5.6 , MS SQL Server 2008 on 64 bit Microsoft Windows Server
Issue Description: Unable to connect to SQL Server 2008 from OBIEE11G RPD
Details: We are unable to connect to SQL Server 2008 from OBIEE which is on a 64 bit Linux box. We created the ODBC connection on Linux box to the SQL server. Whenever we try to import metadata it throws an error that says ‘Connection Failed’.
Here are the steps we followed to setup the ODBC connection on Linux box.
1) We updated the user.sh file with the LD_LIBRARY_PATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH_64 values that point to $ORACLE_HOME/bifoundation/odbc/lib
This is where we found the driver for SQL server SEmsss23.so.
2) We updated the odbc.ini file with the entry for SQL server with the connection details
SI_SQL_Server_DEV = SQL Server
[SI_SQL_Server_DEV]
Driver=/u001_OAS/Oracle/Middleware/Oracle_BI1/bifoundation/odbc/lib/SEmsss23.so
Description=DataDirect 5.1 SQL Server Wire Protocol

ConnectionRetryCount=0
ConnectionRetryDelay=3
Database=SVBDW_NEW
LoadBalancing=0
LogonID=SIDatavalidation
Password=~~~Password123
QuoteID=No
ReportCodePageConversionErrors=0
3) We updated the IDENTIFIER_QUOTE_CHAR with single quotes instead of double quotes in the DB features of the RPD
4) We updated the bash_profile file to point the ODBCINI variable to the path where the OBIEE odbc.ini file is present.
Export ODBCINI=/u001_OAS/Oracle/Middleware/instances/instance1/bifoundation/OracleBIApplication/coreapplication/setup/odbc.ini
The error in nqsserver.log file says “[nQSError: 16001] ODBC error state: IM002 code: 0 message: [DataDirect][ODBC lib] Data source name not found and no default driver specified.”Hi,
Make sure SQL Configuration Manager make sure the TCP/IP enabled. please try below method
Method 1
Re Create a new ODBC & Oracle Bi Server DSN Configuration test it and use it in the connection pools.
define your ODBC data source in your server where the BI Server is installed. Check your DB connections in your physical layer and make they are defined on your BI Server as well.
Method 2:
try using the complete TNS in below format in the datasource name section:
(DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP) (HOST =DB IP)(PORT = 1521)) ) (CONNECT_DATA = (SERVICE_NAME = ORCL) ) and provide the credentials.
Method 3:
To use the OCI call interface you need to have oracle client DB to be installed so that you can establish a connection using that DB credentials and connect to the remote dB and then import the tables.....this is the rule of thumb.
hope helps you.

I have created a Linked Server to Access Database of 64 MB in Size located in Remote System to SQL Server 2012.In Start for Some time it works fine and after it is giving the Error
OLE DB provider "Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0" for linked server "LANDLINE_TEST" returned message "Cannot open a database created with a previous version of your application.".

Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0" for linked server "LANDLINE_TEST".
Previously I thought it as Permission Issue. By trying some fixes proposed in forums it not fixed. But, after restarting the SQL Server Services without changes to the linked Server it works perfectly. How could i fix it. I don't want restart the SQL Server
Service it leads to Some other process failures.
RehaanKhan. MAfter all the Errors, When I am restarting the SQL Server its working correctly.
Whats the problem it is clearing itself after restarting of SQL Server. Why ?. I can't find anything regarding this in SQL Server .
The following are the Errors i got connecting to SQl Server.
OLE DB provider "Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0" for linked server "LANDLINE_TEST" returned message "Cannot open a database created with a previous version of your application.".
Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Procedure Insert_Records_Into_Actual_Calls_History, Line 29

for to fix above error i have followed the instructions in the following link,
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/dataaccesstechnologies/archive/2010/08/19/permissions-needed-to-set-up-linked-server-with-out-of-process-provider.aspx
This also failed to work. I Restarted SQL Server and make the Linked Server Properties Default to my Configuration and it works fine.
Can you suggest me a solution for this issue. Every time i don't want to restart SQL Server Services as it effects other jobs and Processes.
Thank you.

Unable to connect to sql server 2008
i have windows 8 64-bit on my system, i installed sql server 2008 it installed successfully, but now i'm unable to open server management studio, it is showing error like "provider:named pipes provider, error:40-
could not open a connection to sql server microsoft sql
server, error:2" and in configuration manager there is nothing under "sql server services and sql server network configuration"kindly help me to fix this problemHello,
Please run the Discovery Report as shown in the following resource and make sure the Database Engine Services is listed
on the report.
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/petersad/archive/2009/11/13/sql-server-2008-discovery-report.aspx
If the Database Engine Services is listed on the report, please apply SP3 for SQL Server 2008 since SQL Server is not compatible with Windows 8 without that service pack.

Hope this helps.

Hi Rahul.U,
Are you able to connect to SQL Server successfully from SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) when enforcing encryption?
According to above error message, it could be caused by the inappropriate server name or incorrect TrustServerCertificate configuration in the connection string from Visual Studio. There are some proposals for you troubleshooting this error.
1. Make sure that you connect to the SQL server using the fully qualified domain name (FQDN).
2. When connecting to a SQL Server instance with a valid certificate, please add the
TrustServerCertificate
parameter and set it to true in the connection string. For more details, please review this
article.
However, if you can successfully connect to SQL Server via SSMS, but still fail to connect to SQL Server from Visual Studio, I would like to recommend you post the question in the .Net Framework forum at
https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/vstudio/en-US/home?category=netdevelopment . It is appropriate and more experts will assist you.
There are similar articles about error “The target principal name is incorrect” for your reference.

Borland C++ Delphi application is not able to connect to SQL Server as Non Admin user
Hi,
I am working on a Borland C++ and Delphi application. This application connects to SQL Server and returns database queries results. Once we migrated to windows Server 2003 we have started facing an issue.
1. IF we login to client application as admin user then this connects properly with SQL Server and returns database queries.But if we connect using Non- Admin users then application is not able to connect SQL Server.
SQL Server 2008
Windows Server 2003.
Can anybody help on this.
Thanks in Advance.
RakeshThis application is written in Borland C++ and Delphi running on Windows 2003 Server. This is a Windows GUI based small tool. Basic functionality of the tool is : 1) Once we invoke the tool it connects to DB(SQL Server 2005) and populates a list of
all the tables present in DB. 2) If we select any table from the list populated in step (1) and provide query parameters, this will return results from Database.
Issue: IF we login to the Windows machine as Administrator this application runs perfectly .This application populates the DB tables correctly and returns results from database when queries executed as in step (2)
But if we login as some other user (like hubapp) then this populates some different set of table which are not from the same database instance .Also the queries does not return any results. In the logs we get following error message : (TiltData is the instance
name for our Database)
Msg:Application Exception : Cannot locate or connect to SQL server.Unable to connect: SQL Server is unavailable or does not exist. Specified SQL
server not found.Alias:

As for the connection string

Any help is appreciated. I have spent a lot of time on this issue with no results.

"Unable to load URL" - SQL Server 2005 DB Web Service Connection
Hi ,
I am using XCelsius version 5.0.0.99 to create dashboards connecting to SQL Server 2005.
Find below the details of the steps -
1. Created a web service within SQL Server 2005 database.
2. Copied the WSDL URL.
3. In XCelsius 2008 -> Data Manager -> Web Service Connection, pasted the URL in the WSDL URL input box and clicked "Import" to import the methods. At this point I am getting "Unable to load URL" .
Am I missing any step ?
Any suggestion would be highly appreciated.
Note : I have tested the web service by using it in a ASP.Net project and works fine.
Thanks
ChitraHi,
Error :unable to Load URL occurs" because Crystal xcelsius only support single schema web service created from Query as a web service and Flynet tool available in xcelsius 2008.
The reason:
All the web service create from Sql 2005 ,PHP script produced multiple scehma web service and crystal xcelsius only support single schema web service which can be created from Query as a web service or Flynet.
Please revert in case of any queries.

Unable to establishing a connection to SQL Server created via SqlManagementClient
Goal:
create an Azure SQL Server via .NET (Microsoft.WindowsAzure.Management.Sql.Modules.SqlManagementClient) and add a database to it.
Problem:
I am NOT able to access the newly created server from .Net code.
Description:
Using SqlManagementClient I SUCCESFULLY create a new Azure SQL Server (see code below).
After creating the server, I am able to access the new server from Azure Portal.

This is driving me crazy. I have Reporting services implemented on several sites in Sharepoint. For some reason just one site refuses to work. I see all the features are there. I can create data sources.
When I try to create a report I get :
"Unable to connect to the server that is specified in the URL,
http://help.site. Make sure that the server is running, the URL is correct, and you have permission to use the server"
I'm using my domain admin account, I know know this works on every other site. I know I haven't forgotten the general setup of the service.
The only difference is this site allows "anonymous" connections. Has anyone heard of an issue about using anon and reporting services? Either way I authenticate before I login but that doesn't have an effect.
David JenkinsThank you forums!!!!
I found an existing thread.

1) Opened up IIS
2) Expanded my intranet folder
3) Expanded _vti_bin
4) Highlighted "ReportServer"
5) Double Clicked on Authentication
6) Disabled "Anonymous Access" to the reporting folder itself
7) Opened report builder 3.0 and typed in http://intranet.company.com" BOOM instant connection :D

Dear all,
I know that this topic may be a bit old school; but it really make me mad as I tried all solutions i found and it still cant be resolved....please give a hand...
The situation is like this,my company divided different platform as a status of project, like DEV, SIT and UAT. I got a project that require me to upgrade an vs2003 project to vs2005. I upgraded it completely and
successfully, it works fine in development and UAT platform; EXCEPT, the SIT platform.
The situation is very strange that, once I move the source to SIT, it return the following error:
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections.
(provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)
but it never happen in either DEV or UAT platform and even do I copy the workable web.config from DEV or UAT platform to SIT, the error still here and unable to resolve it.
I search a lot in the internet by Google, but solution suggested are not suitable or fail in my case. Most answer suggest that "enable remote control", "check fire wall", "check server" etc......But as I can connect well the
DBServer in DEV and UAT properly, I dont think those are the cause(but still, I check them all, and all are enabled properly, except my firewall setting is OFF, so adding port is ignored).
After all the searching and testing, I believed and have reason to believe that, the cause is inside my web.config:
<appSettings>
<!-- User application and configured property settings go here.-->
<!-- Example: <add key="settingName" value="settingValue"/> -->
<clear/>
<add key="Environment" value="UAT v1.31"/>

<add key="cnbpss1.ConnectionString" value="data source=DB_UAT\BPSS;password=theloginpwd;persist security info=True;user id=theloginid;workstation id=RP_UAT;packet size=4096"/>
</appSettings>
</configuration>
I know such kind of setting is old school; But due to this program runs for few years from tons of ppl...I dont dare to modify it unless I am very sure they are the cause.....
May I ask if anyone cna give me some advice and help in this issue please? I already tried for weeks and turning mad....Please I really need some help...
Many thanks.

Database Connection in SQL Server 2000
Hi All!
I would like to ask your expertise regarding JDBC-MS SQL Server 2000.
I have here a sample code in connecting to SQL Server 2000, AgriMrpPrd Database using the account "sa" and the password "092802". I have tried running the code in my local server at home and It successfully runs, but when I tried running it on my local server in the office, I was not able to create a connection object though I already have changed the HOST, PORT, DATABASE, USERNAME, and PASSWORD values.
I have tried logging in using my local account, removed the LAN connection, start my local server and tried connecting to it but still it does not work.
I have tried turning the firewall OFF and try reconnecting but it there was no improvement.
I do not know if there is a difference if there is my computer is on a DOMAIN (althought I am only connecting to my local server).
Source Code:
import javax.swing.*;
import java.sql.*;
import com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.*;
public class SQLServerConnection{
public String un, pw, db, host, port, url, driver;
public Connection conn=null;
public void connectDB(){
String msg="",title="MS SQL Server - JDBC:ODBC Connection";
int msgType=0;
driver="com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver";
host="206.101.216.95";
port="1433";
un="sa";
pw="092803";
db="AgriMrpPrd";
url="jdbc:microsoft:sqlserver://" + host + ":" + port + ";DatabaseName=" + db;
try{
Class.forName(driver);
conn=DriverManager.getConnection(url,un,pw);
System.out.println("Connected to Database!");
}catch(Exception ex){
msg="Unable to connect to MS SQL Server!";
msgType=JOptionPane.ERROR_MESSAGE;
JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null,msg,title,msgType);
System.exit(0);
public static void main(String args[]){
SQLServerConnection ssc=new SQLServerConnection();
ssc.connectDB();
Please give me wisdom in handling this problem...
Take care always and God blesss

though I already have changed the HOST, PORT,
DATABASE, USERNAME, and PASSWORD values.If the code runs in one place and not the other, it's got to be a problem with seeing the host.

I have tried turning the firewall OFF and try

(1) You don't have to import the microsoft package. It's actually a bad idea.
(2) I'd name this class DbConnection, because if you wrote it properly it might have a chance of being useful wih other databases, too.
(3) You hardwire all the connection information. Better to pass it in so changing the database doesn't require a recompile.
(4) It's bad to mingle Swing and database code. Take those JOptionPane calls out.
(5) Print the stack trace out when you catch an exception. You're losing a lot of information by handling it that way.

Please help urgent
Sorry for long file. Can any one please help me in solving this problem.
Thanks in advnace
KurakulaI'd recommend that you not use the JDBC-ODBC bridge driver to connect to SQL Server. M$ and jTDS are two free type IV JDBC drivers that you should use instead. Put those JARs in the WEB-INF/lib directory.
The database URL you're using is not correct if you change drivers. Consult the docs to find out what the proper syntax is.
