Unable to connect to the router! (wrt54g v. 2)

I just got a router from a garage sale; it was still in the box and everything.
Well, I tried hooking it up to my modem and computer to get wifi, but I can't get it to work.
This is the setup:
modem -> router -> computer
I can access the internet when the setup is this way, but there's no wifi, and I can't access 192.168.1.1 or set it up using the CD it came with. When I go through the setting up process with the CD, I get this error message that says "Unable to connect to router! Check that the router has been connected to the computer, and that you're ethernet adapter is working."
When I try to go to 192.168.1.1, it says "The connection has timed out." I can't ping it either.
I've also tried resetting it several times, but that doesn't do anything.
Someone please help!

Hi sylentknight and welcome to the forums!
You said that you are able to connect to the internet with this set-up: modem -> router -> computer right? So does that mean that you can ping the router when it is connected directly to your computer? Reason why I'm asking is if it does work, you can try to configure the router for the wireless settings while it is directly connected to the router first then try to go wireless. Please let me know if understood your post correctly.

  • WRT54G: Unable to connect to the Router!

I have set up my router exactly as told in the setup wizard, but when I get to step 8, I encounter a problem and I get the following error message:
Unable to connect to the Router!
Check that your Router has been connected to the computer, and that your Ethernet adapter is working!
Oddly, my wired internet works just fine through the router, but my wireless doesn't because I can't complete the setup. All the lights that are supposed to be on are on and not blinking or anything.
What do I need to do to fix this?

you can actualy configure the router without using a setup cd.. you can try accessing the router setup page using your working computer that is wired to the router. just go to internet exp. type 192.168.1.1 on the address box.. it will ask for password- just type admin. go to the wireless menu - change the ssid to any name that you want to name your network. try to view wireless networks on your wireless pc and check if you can see the name that you set. connect to it..
you can check if it works.

  • Setup WIzard error. Unable to connect to the Router.

All the connections are correct.  I am able to connect to IE and FireFox with ethernet and connected my nook via 'Linksys'.  I opened using ISP address and set up security.  Is there more in the setup that I need to do?

Hi. Are you still getting that error after you setup everything on the router? Is wired internet working already? Are you replacing an old router? If you still encounter that error, you can download the updated software version for your router. It is best to wire your computer directly to the modem for that and run it from there. You may have to reset the router back to defaults by pressing its reset button down for 15 seconds so that you can start afresh with the setup. I have here a link for you that might help you regarding the software:

I just took the wireless router out of the box, setup and ran the software on my Dell Inspiron 700m. I get the error message: "Unable to connect to the router! Check that the router has been connected to the PC, or reset the Router to factory default settings by pressing the router's reset button for 5 seconds."
I know you'll need some additional info to solve my problem, but I don't know what it is until you ask.  Sorry.
Please someone help me out.  I've been messing with this thing for days now and I'm about to just toss it out the window.

    1.  Is this a wired connection or wireless?
    - I'm experiencing this problem when the router is wired to my PC.  I haven't made it far enouh in the setup to where I'm dealing with a wireless router yet.
    2.  Do you have DHCP enabled on your machine?
    - I don't know.  How do I enable DHCP?
    3.  This is normal a good deal of the time as the page refreshes before the router can come back up and before your machine can renew it's DHCP address. Have you tried to connect to the internet anyhow when this happens?
    - Yes.  I still can't connect.
    4.  When this happens the next time, what does "ipconfig /all" give you from a command prompt?

  • Internet connection is fine, but my laptop no longer recognizes the router (WRT54G)

I discovered this problem while trying to add a wired PC to my router. Even though I connected, disconnected, and reconnected my laptop multiple times, it was unable to recognize the router (WRT54G). This has not always been a problem, since I set up the initial wireless connection and later an Xbox Live connection, but that was over six months ago. There's no obvious physical damage to the router or my laptop, neither has been dropped recently or anything like that.
    Any help is appreciated.

Well, 2 quick things. Try a cable from one of the working systems on the laptop. Also check your local area network connection (Start Menu, Connect to, -> Local area network, right click, properties, scroll down to "TCP/IP") and make sure it is set to "Obtain IP Address automatically, and "Obtain DNS Automatically". I have had nothing but trouble with the setup CD's.

  • Why can I connect to my home network with my iPhone 5 in one room, but when I move to another it is 'unable to connect to the network'

At home, I can connect my iPhone 5 to my home wifi network with no problems, as long as I stay downstairs.
As soon as I go upstairs my phone disconnects from the network. I can still see the home network it in the available network lists (with full signal strength), but when I try to reconnect I get an 'unable to connect to the network message'
If I move back downstairs it reconnects
This has only started happening in the past week or so
I've tried to forget and rejoin the network, but this doesn't work
I reset my network settings on the phone. This worked for a couple of hours and I could connect to the wifi upstairs, but now it won't connect again.
Does anyone have any ideas what is causing this?

Sounds like your wi-fi signal strength has degraded.  Try rebooting your wi-fi router, or get it serviced.
Do you have similar issues with any other wi-fi routers?

  • HP Device Toolbox software Error Unable to connect to the printer

    Hi guys,
I'm currently in bit of a nightmare with my HP Laserjet 100 color MFP M175nw.
Basically I have upgraded to a new wireless router and since doing this my HP Laser Jet refuses to work / connect to the wireless network.
I have literally tried just about evey thing I can to get it to work, thoroughly through the manual, uninstalled and reinstalled the software about 12 times, tried firewalls on and off, tried security on the router on and off, tried WPS mode, tried manually entering in the IP address into the printer all without luck. You can see my dedicated thread here
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-Networking-and-Wireless/HP-LaserJet-Pro-100-color-MFP-M175nw-un...
So currently I have the printer connect to the computer via USB and it works, so I decided to try using the HP Device toolbox software  to see if it would give me any more options to try and when I run this software I get
Error: Unable to connect to the printer, make sure your printer is properly connected and powered on and then try to open the HP device toolbox again. Arg!!!
My new router is a Billion 7800DXL, my old router which worked in wireless mode was also a Billion 7300g.
Any help would be great really stuck here

    Hello tf22raptor.
I see that you're now experiencing an issue getting the Device Tool box to run. I will try and assist with this.
After reviewing this post and the other thread, I have a few things you can try.
    1) Run MS Fix it utility to uninstall the software: Fix problems that programs cannot be installed or uninstalled.
(This is to make sure the software is completely removed and conflicts in the registry get resolved)
2)Msconfig: press windows key and R on the keyboard> in run box type "msconfig"> on window select "services tab"> check box next to "hide all MS services> press disable all> go to "startup" tab> press disable all> press apply and ok at the bottom> this should prompt a PC restart.
    Please restart.
    3) Re-install via USB
    4) Try running the device toolbox now
5)If still having issues installing wireless, you may have to contact the router manufacture.
I hope this helps you out. Thanks for posting on the HP Forums.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8000 Wireless: HP printer unable to connect to wireless router.

Installing new printer,  getting error msg saying HP printer unable to connect to wireless router.   MAC address filtering may be enabled on your wireless router which can prevent HP printer from connecting to your wireless network during setup.
SOLUTION says:  If MAC address filtering is enabled and you would like to keep it enabled, you must add the MAC addressof your printer to the list of permitted devices for your wireless router before continuing.
My router is WD My Net N900 Router. MAC filtering is diabled. My security mode is WPA/WPA2 Personal.
I have run out of ideas to try and fix the issues, would appreciate some help.
    Thanks,

    Hi Jamshidk
I am surprised you are getting that message and you checked the router settings and it is showing that the Mac Filtering is disabled.
I would suggest connecting the printer to the router with a ethernet cable to get a valid IP address and then setup the wireless.
    Print a configuration report.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&dlc=en&docname=c01554589&lc=en&product=3760410&tmp...
Type the IP address from the configuration page  in the address bar into internet explorer browser. This will open the embedded web server for the printer. Click on the Networking tab, on the left hand side select wireless. After this is setup and applied, disconnect the ethernet cable.
Should be on the wireless network. Takes about 1 minute.
    Run the add printer wizard.
Go to start, devices and printers and select add a printer. (Win 7)
    Test the printer.

  • HP OfficeJet Pro 8500A Plus "unable to connect to the server"

I have had this printer for a couple years and now it is saying it is unable to connect to the server.  The light under the wifi symbol is not lit up and nothing happens when I press that button.
I have restarted the printer, reinstalled the driver, restarted the router ... to no avail.
The router is working properly as my 2 computers are both working.

    Hi bhappie,
Welcome to the HP Support forums.  I gather that you are unable to connect your Officejet 8500A plus printer to your wireless network.
This printer can be connected by an ethernet cable or connected to your wireless network but cannot support both simultaneously as referenced in the document The Printer Does Not Support Ethernet (Wired) and Wireless Network Connections at the Same Time.  To setup the wireless feature you will need to unplug the ethernet cable.
Your wireless printer can be easily connected to your wireless network from the front panel of your printer.  If you are unsure how to do this the instructions can be found in your User Guide on page 219 in the section titled “To set up a wireless communication using the Wireless Setup Wizard”.
Now that the printer has a wireless connection, any computer that uses the printer, will need to have the connection method updated.  The instructions on how to do this can also be found in your User Guide on page 221 in the section titled “Change the connection method”.  There is a sub-section dedicated to Windows operating systems and one dedicated to Mac operating systems.

  • GRE tunnel could not be used by the hosts connected to the router

    Hi,
I am using cisco ASR1013 (RP2) and a Mikrotik Router for setting up a GRE tunnel for LAN to LAN routing over a broadband link. The tunnel works fine (able to ping tunnel end points and also all the connected interfaces on both the Mikrotik and Cisco ASR) but the hosts that are connected directly to the Cisco router interface over a layer 2 cisco switch are unable to connect (ping) the hosts or connected interfaces on the mikrotik side. I have a ipad mini and i have had it for less then a year, it says that i have perfect wifi up in the left corner where the wifi is always at  but when ever i go into the built in safari it says that it is unable to connect with the server. How can i fix this because with out it connecting to the server or internet it is kind of useless to me. I do have ios7 if that helps

The wifi symbol only indicates the presence/signal strength of wifi. Not that you are connected.
    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

  • I can't connect to the router in my home.  Things were working fine as usual - I attended school and connected to their WiFi network as usual.  When I returned home I could not connect to my own home router.  The Ipad seeks the network but nothing happens

I can't connect to the router in my home.  The Ipad seeks the network but nothing happens.  I went to school and connected to their WiFi network as usual with no problems.  When I returned home I could not connect to my home router.  The Ipad seeks the router number but nothing happens.  I rebooted the Ipad a few times in the school.  The numbers identifying the router, etc. on my Ipad no longer appear there.
TThe Ipad guide says to connect to the WiFi use setup but I can't find the setup program in the Ipad.
I reset the network settings to the factory defaults but this doesn't fix the problem.
What can I do to reconnect to my home router?

        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Updating firmware when I can't get an internet connection through the router

I am trying to update the firmware for WRT54G V8, but some of the instructions indicate I need to have the router connected and be connected to the internet.  I cannot get an internet connection through the router.  Can I upgrade firmware without being connected to the internet through the router.  (I have had this router for about a year and a half with no problems until now.)

Yes, you can upgrade the firmware without an Internet connection.
To upgrade the firmware, first download the new firmware into a computer that you can wire to your router.
Next, power down your entire network.
Then wire the computer to a LAN port on the router.
Disconnect all other wires from the router.
Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    Power up your computer.
Login to the router, and do the firmware upgrade  (it will likely take several minutes).
    Power down your entire network.
Next you need to reset the router to factory defaults.
To reset your router to factory defaults, use the following procedure:
    1) Power down all computers, the router, and the modem, and unplug them from the wall.
    2) Disconnect all wires from the router.
    3) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    4) Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release it, then let the router reset and reboot (2-3 minutes).
    5) Power down the router.
    6) Connect one computer by wire to port 1 on the router (NOT to the internet port).
    7) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    8) Power up the computer (if the computer has a wireless card, make sure it is off).
    9) Try to ping the router. To do this, click the "Start" button > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. A black DOS box will appear. Enter the following: "ping 192.168.1.1" (no quotes), and hit the Enter key. You will see 3 or 4 lines that start either with "Reply from ... " or "Request timed out." If you see "Reply from ...", your computer has found your router.
    10) Open your browser and point it to 192.168.1.1. This will take you to your router's login page. Leave the user name blank, and in the password field, enter "admin" (with no quotes). This will take you to your router setup page. Note the version number of your firmware (usually listed near upper right corner of screen). Exit your browser.
If you get this far without problems, try the setup disk (or setup the router manually, if you prefer), and see if you can get your router setup and working.
If you cannot get "Reply from ..." in step 9 above, your router is likely dead. Report back with this problem
If you get a reply in step 9, but cannot complete step 10, then either your router is dead or the firmware is corrupt. Report back with this problem.
If you need additional help, please state your ISP, the make and model of your modem, your router's firmware version, and the results of steps 9 and 10. Also, if you get any error messages, copy them exactly and report back.
Please let me know how things turn out for you.

  • Wifi "unable to connect" for the past month

I have not been able to connect to my home wifi for the past month. It keeps popping up saying that it is unable to connect. sometimes it will work, but only for 2 minutes tops. My roommate uses the same internet connection and she said that she has not had a problem with it. I have tried rebooting it, turning it on airplane mode then resetting network settings and rebooting it, forgetting the network, and even resetting my entire phone. nothing will work. but my phone connects to the wifi at work and works perfectly fine. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP

The router in 99.99% of the time may be fine and see and connect to the devices it detects. However after certain updates to phones it has been said that the phone will not connect to the router.
There was a list of known routers on this forum that just did not work. The so!ution was to either reset the broadband modem, wireless router and turn off the phone.
Then if it connects your problem is solved. If it doesn't your next step is to see if there are firmware updates for the modem and the router. (Mainly routers) if it still does not connect a new router not on the non working list should be purchased. Yes its another expense but if you want the device to connect that is your option.
Another trick you can use is to change the security from WEP to WPA, PSK or WPA 2 and change the password to the router.
Some people stated a password of at least 9 figures / digits worked great.
If you placed the phone on its own IP address that also has been known to work.
However its best to talk to tech support at the router maker to assist.
    Good Luck
