Unable to Connect to Windows File Shares

Steps I take to attempt to connect to a Windows File Share within the office. Being relatively new to the Mac, I am curious on why I am not able to connect to Windows File Shares.
1. Command-K
2. Server Address: smb://[server-hostname]/[sharename]
3. Click Connect
4. Connecting To Server..... (takes a short amount of time)
5. SMB/CIFS File System Authentication
- I then enter the domain, username and password
6. Click OK
7. Error: Could not connect to the server because the name or password is not correct.
What gives? I have confirmed and validated server hostname, sharename, appropriate persmissions for windows account, etc. I have tried IP Address instead of hostname, same outcome.
Any Ideas?

Hi Arus, not really a Windows® expert, but I think I've seen were putting the Domain name in there fixed it, but I can't find the exact way to do it, this is the closest I could find...
"If I try to connect to smb://domain, that's when I can authenticate. If I try smb://machine/share, I still get the error -43."

  • Windows File Share configuration from AIX Portal

    Hi,
we want to connect a Windows file share as  KM  Repository to a portal running on AIX.
The network path is configured using jCIFS and user (DOMAIN.NET\USERNAME) is entered with password. The corresponding path is also entered in the FS Repository manager using ACLSecurity manager. A Windows System is not configured .
In the repository managers monitoring view our new repository manager shows a green button. In the KM however, it is not visible. The portal log shows the following error:
"Cannot retrieve credentials from URL for file 'DOMAIN.NET; USERNAME/' "
We tried to connect the file share with the same user/password. This worked fine.
Is there something else to configure ?
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Marcus

    Hi,
the problem was the passwort. Using "?, %" or other special characters interpreted in a URL may not be used.
After changing password to a alphanumeric everything works just fine.

  • Issue with G4 connecting to a Windows File Share

We have a single MAC G4 that our marketing department uses for graphic development. when we first setup the PC we were able to connect to our Windows shares on the network. For better than a year now we have had intermittent problems with connecting to our Windows file share. It would drop the TCP connection to the file share, you would need to go back a re-authenicate to the share. Two weeks ago the problem worsened, we can't connect the to Windows files share at all now. I have tried different users accounts including my own which has domain admin authority. However I have a samba file share and a snap server running on the network and I am able to connect to these machines with no issues. I suspect a configuration problem, but not sure where to look next.
The MAC is running the following OS version and Kernel
    OS 10.3.9 (7W98)
    Kernel Darwin 7.9.0
    Any guidance would be appreciated

I just figured it out myself.

  • Browsing Windows File Shares not working

I'm trying to integrate Macs into our Windows and Linux Network. After finally getting a stable Active Directory binding (Article TS3248 http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3248?viewlocale=en_US) the remaining challenge is for our users to browse for Windows (Samba) servers. That is, visible in "Networking" or the Side Panel under "SHARED".
At the moment the users are able to connect to all file shares by using "Connect to Server ..." and typing "smb://host/share" so we know that Kerberos is working well (AD Integration). The variation "smb://someuser@host/share" and providing a password also works. When the file share is mounted it is displayed under "Shared"
Searching on the net led me to check /private/var/log/samba/log.nmbd file. Every five minutes the following error message is logged:
    \[2011/03/16 13:04:04, 0, pid=113\] /SourceCache/samba/samba-235.5/samba/source/libsmb/nmblib.c:send_udp(793)
Packet send failed to <WINS server IP>(138) ERRNO=No route to host
This doesn't make sense since this host is pingable and is on the same subnet (i.e. no route). An additional observation is that Windows XP machines that are NOT bound to the domain are browsable. The problem applies both to Windows Server 2008 as well as CentOS 5.5 servers running Samba.
Google search has turned up nothing. Based upon my experience with other Samba implementations, this may be a bug in OS X. Anyone out there having the same problem or a resolution?

I have a similar problem, and have seen something somewhere about a difference in AD in windows 2003 server and Windows 2008 server based networks. It also seem to be related to the lack of wins in modern Windows 2008 R2 functional level domains. I haven't been able to rule this out yet, but the problem for me is similar. MAC client running 10.6.x cannot see Windows computers under shared unless it's already mounted. I haven't been able to test this with OS X 10.7 yet.

  • Windows file share, finder issues

    Hello-
At my work we have a Windows 2008 R2 file share that our mac computers connect to. all of the mac computers have snow leopard running on them. A few times a week finder either stops responding and crashes, or cannot connect to the file share. Once the machine is restarted, it works fine for a little while. This seems to be a never ending cycle. Is there anything I can do to make the performance better on a Mac connecting to a windows file share?
    Thanks

  • Searching windows file shares

I'm searching for a method or a program which allows me to search windows shared drives without having to connect to each shared drive individually.
    Is this possible?
I know in Windows there are programs which can search the contents of all shared drives visible on your network. I was hoping that a similar program existed for the Mac.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Dave,
They can open files as well? Or just see search results?
As with most search results they should be security trimmed by SharePoint automatically. The Crawler and Indexer should apply security permissions to the search entries, so that when the Query component provides the security context the results returned
are only the ones the user is able to (at minimum) read.
I have seen similar issues when the security account for search isn't set up quite right. If the search query service is using the search account or an admin account it may be returning all results that it has access to, rather than just the results the
user has access to. But if users are also able to get to the files as well, that might be something a bit strange with the file share instead?
RE permissions on the File Share, instead of the Microsoft Support article is there another account you can use to crawl the content instead? Sometimes I have created a separate File Share crawl account that has read access to the file share to be crawled/indexed.
I then add a Crawl Rule to add alternate credentials for crawling:

  • Connection to windows DFS Shares

Can OS X 10.6 connect to a DFSR share and access files on a windows 2008 R2 server?
I see people using DAVE and ExtemeZ-IP for DFS but i also see people are able to connect with 10.6. Also if a user can't access the namespace dfs share, but could access the server dfs share directly that might be ok.
I figured you server guys would know more than the workstation forum browsers.
My goal is to have a physical win2k8r2 server in 2 office locations connected via VPN and be able to have users in both locations connect to a single share that is always in sync. DFSR seems to be the only good solution for this, but all the client machines are Mac's and we also have an Xserve in 1 location and an new mac mini as a OD replica in the other location.

    g3sys,
How many Macs are you talking about? You are most likely going to need to buy a solution one way or the other, but the number of Macs that you need to support may be the determining factor.
Group Logic's ExtremeZ-IP server pricing is based on the number of Macs you are going to have connecting, and the DFS serving capability is an additional fee (based on Group Logic's pricing page).
Thursby's DAVE is a per-client cost, but includes DFS support built-in.
I usually recommend DAVE to my clients, since you don't have to change the Windows server, and DFS is built in, so it can be more cost effective. Group Logic may be better for hundreds or thousands of Macs, but I don't know what their pricing is in those cases.

  • Suddenly unable to connect to ANY SMB share (XP, Vista, etc.)

For the past 1 year, I am able to connect to my Windows "server", which is a Windows box running WinXP. All I need to do just go to Finder -> Connect and type this:
    smb://MYWINDOWSBOX/c$
However, as of yesterday, suddenly it couldn't connect at all! My MacBook Pro can ping, VNC and heck even do Windows RDP to ANY of my Windows boxes. It just does not want to connect via Finder file sharing (SMB).
I am trying to trace back what I did this past week that may cause this problem, but I couldn't think of any. All I did these past 1 week are:
    1) Install DropBox client app
    2) Install new certificate in Keychain access (iPhone development)
    3) Uninstall StuffIt
FYI, the error I am getting is:
The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "smb://MYCOMPUTERNAME/c$" could not be read or written. [Error code -36]"
However, if I go to Terminal and type the following: smbclient \\\\MYCOMPUTER\\C$, it DOES WORKS!! I can browse the share, change directory, etc.
It seems something is broken between Finder and SMB.
Can anyone offer any advise? Any configuration file to change?

if the problem for you is also NortonAV, you can check the "network security map" to see that the Mac is not listed. After slamming my head on the keyboard and hitting as many reset to default buttons that I could find, NortonAV finally gave up and listed the Mac without having to disable the intrusion protection. I don't know yet if it will stick, and it may still require being disabled but at this point it is definitely Norton as the culprit in my case. best of luck. j

  • Unable to connect to Windows Printer

I have an HP Photosmart C3180 attached to my wife's Vista machine that I am unable to connect to. She had an XP machine until a few days ago that I had connected to via CUPS with smb://username@machine/share.
I've tried the same now that it's set up on the Vista machine with absolutely no luck, what I'm getting is the NTSTATUS_ACCESSDENIED messages when trying to print.

I suggest that the Vista system is refusing you permission to the resource.
You will have to look at the Vista end to fix this.
Is the printer shared in windows?
    Is the firewall enabled?

  • Shared folders (Windows file shares) show access denied and do not prompt for credentials

    Scenario:
Like other admins, I log on and work as a 'standard user' (usera) with no admin rights anywhere in the domain, to perform admin tasks I have another account (userb) which I authenticate with as and when required. userb has been allocated/delegated permissions
    as required.
    Problem:
When trying to connect to shared folders on servers (2008 R2) using a UNC patch via Windows Explorer (Win 7 Ent.), I see an access denied error and do not get an option to supply alternative credentials.
If I try to connect to the admin shares on the same server (\\server\C$ or \\server\e$) I get an access denied message AND get prompted for credentials. I supply my admin account and gain access as expected.
If I check share and storage management when attempting to connect, I see that Windows is trying to connect me to each share as usera (which has no access). I understand why I get access denied at this point, but not why it can't just prompt me to supply an
account that does have access. When trying the admin shares I also see the usera account, but I get a prompt to supply a user who does have access.
Share permissions on the folders are for example 'Everyone' Full Control.  NTFS permissions are 'userb' has modify (read, execute, list, traverse etc) via a 'Server Admins' AD Universal security group.
Note: If I do a NET USE from CMD and use the /USER switch, I can access the shares fine. But this is not great for accessing shared folders on the fly from various computers.
How can I get the other shares on the server to prompt me, rather than just say access denied?
    Many thanks.

Try to disable guest user from the server

  • FIrewall for Windows File Share for windows 2008

    Hi All,
Recently we upgraded one of our application file server from Windows 2000 to Windows 2008. We use this server for file sharing. We used to read files and write files to this server. Post upgrade one week every thing went fine all of a sudden we started seeing
issues like the application servers stopped communicated to this server.
We worked with our firewall team and enabled port 445 post this the application servers started communicating to the file server. Our Application servers are on Windows 2003 server.
Can someone please help me understand what is the port that needs to be enabled for accessing the file shares. My firewall team confirmed there were no firewalls rules between the Application server and File server.

    Hi,
Based on my research, firewall ports required for SMB file sharing are port 445 and 139.
    More information for you:
SMB: File and printer sharing ports should be open

  • Windows File Share doesn't work over RV042 QuickVPN

I have two sites, one has an RV042 and the other an RV042G, and there is an IPSec tunnel between the two.
Windows file sharing works between these two over the tunnel.
I have a laptop with QuickVPN Client which I use to connect to either site.
If I connect to the RV042G site, file sharing works fine.
If I connect to the RV042 site, I can't get file sharing to work.
As far as I can see, both routers are set the same.
    Can anyone help here?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Give Windows file share a web address

Just setup a shortcut with the following.
    file://[pcname]/[unc path]

Just want to provide some background. We'd like to give a file share an internal web address (i.e. www.newfileshare.com) to be accessible from IE, Chrome, and Firefox.
The share is on a Windows 2008 R2 server currently. All the workstations and servers are in a AD environment. I do not want to use a URI scheme. The web address will be only be for internal purposes only.
    Thank you guys in advance.
