Unable to copy DVD with home movies

I am able to play a DVD that has home movies on it on my Imac and MacBook Pro. I am not able to import into IMovie to try some editing and I cannot copy or burn another disk to share. The copy company stated there was no copy protection on the disk. I made a folder on my Desktop and dragged the icon of the disk to the folder and files appeared in the folder but they appeared as black screen with the file name under them. I can use any assistance or advice.

I am not able to import into IMovie to try some editing
Use MPEG Streamclip and Apple's MPEG-2 playback component to convert the VOB files on it to DV.
I cannot copy or burn another disk to share
Use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to image it as a DVD/CD master and then burn the image.
Neither method will work on copy protected DVDs.

When I copy songs with home sharing it shows it copying but doesn't show up in the library. What should I do ?

    Hi adtsalmon,
You can only watch the movie on the device you rented it on. Here's a snippet from the Apple Support site (italics mine):
If you download a rented movie on your computer: You can transfer it to a device such as your Apple TV (1st generation), iPhone, iPad, or iPod if it’s a standard-definition film (movies in HD can only be watched on your computer, iPad, iPhone 4 or later, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV). Once you move the movie from your computer to a device, the movie will disappear from your computer's iTunes library. You can move the movie between devices as many times as you wish during the rental period, but the movie can only exist on one device at a time.
If you download a rented movie on your iPhone 4 or later, iPad, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV: It is not transferable to any other device or computer.
Here's the link to the Movie Rentals FAQs site FYI:

    Hope this helps!

  • Scanning DVDs (of home movies) into iMovie?

I am working on making a movie for a family event.
    I have two questions:
    1. I have a lot of home movies that we had transferred from video to DVD. Is there some way to scan the DVD and then just import the segments I want into iMovie? As these are not commercial, there is no protection -- would like to put in comptuer, scan video, and select clips to put in iMovie
    2. I have some older movies with clips that I would like to use in iMovie 6 -- should I stick to iMovie6 or use iMovie 7? I know how to use iMove6, but am happy to learn the new one. Just want something easy to use. End product will be projected on large screen at family gathering.
Would any sort of video grabber help?
    thanks for your help!
    Paul

Most direct approach would be to simply copy the non-zero VOB title sets from the DVD to a local hard drive and then convert them to DV (useable with either iMovie HD or iMovie '08). I would personally use MPEG Streamclip (free but requires the $20 QT MPEG-2 Playback component) here so I can flag the content as either 4:3 or 16:9 for proper handling by iMovie '08, but many applications can actually perform the conversion -- including iSquint (free), FFmpegX (donation-ware), Visual Hub (pay-ware), MPEG2 Works (pay-ware but also requires the $20 component), etc.
    2. I have some older movies with clips that I would like to use in iMovie 6 -- should I stick to iMovie6 or use iMovie 7? I know how to use iMove6, but am happy to learn the new one. Just want something easy to use. End product will be projected on large screen at family gathering.
If the editing you wish to perform is more or less traditional, then iMovie HD offers more "traditional" options. iMovie '08 is probably better suited for "lite" edits requiring simple titles/transitions coming from non-DV source files and destined for immediate online posting. Since many of their functions overlap, in many cases either can be used. As you become more proficient in their use, you will like lend to lean towards one over the other depending on you specific project requirements, so it is probably best to keep both handy.

  • Prepare gift Apple TV with home movies?

    Hello Apple TV users,
I would like to gift an Apple TV to a family member (my mother) with some home videos pre-loaded so she can see some special video right out of the box. I already have the video clips in my Movies folder in iTunes.
Is there a way for me to copy these video files to the new Apple TV, but still let my mother use it as a regular Apple TV (rent and buy iTunes with her Apple ID, home sharing etcetera)?
I would like to avoid sending a separate USB drive with the home movies that she would have to import to iTunes and then share to the Apple TV, as she is probably not able to set that up.
    Thanks,
    Nicholas

Hi Jules, thanks for the reply.
Do you imagine the most user-friendly way to package the gift would be to copy the QuickTime files to a USB stick or DVD-R and have my mother import them to her iTunes library before setting up the new Apple TV?

  • Copy Protection for home movies

I have a small video recording business. I taped a ballet recital and will sell the videos to the parents. I would like to know if there is a way that I can copy protect these so they can not make copies of them.
    thanks

And as Sue has already pointed out, if any of us can easily download the software to rip a commercial DVD to our computers that have millions of industry dollars behind the copy protection techniques on them, what makes you think that your home produced DVDs would be any safer?
Usually the best thing to do is get in the mind set that you are providing a service (capturing a moment in time) and an initial product (that moment presented on a DVD with nice menus and such), but you are not a production house that makes their money off number of units moved. My guess is for something like a ballet recital, the parents are not all going to get together and buy a single copy and then make copies among themselves. Instead they will likely all buy their own copy and any additional copies they make would be sent to grandparents and things like that. And if you somehow made it uncopyable, then likely they would not come back to you to purchase additional copies but either not send a copy to Grandma or just dub a version to video tape.
In other words, I think in these small business situations, the initial buyers are likely to buy anyway and the subsequent copies wanted wouldn't be through you anyway. So you are basically trying to protect against something that isn't going to affect you anyway.
Just my opinion as a parent who has bought DVDs of various kids things from the "pros" who put them together (e.g. cheerleading competitions, etc.) but would never buy additional copies from those same people at the same price (I consider the price I paid to be for the service, not the actual copy).

  • Unable to copy dvd

I've been asked by my nephew to make a copy of his wedding video, although it plays perfectly in my dvd player, when I insert the disc in my mac it comes up as an untitled dvd with the extension fpbf. Double clicking on the dvd icon brings up an empty window in the finder. Any ideas how I could make a copy of this disc? Many thanks.

    Hello Mike66
    Thank you for your question,
Make sure your drive supports to write this CD or DVD. It may only be able to view it.
Apple Button -> About this Mac. -> More Information -> Storage Information.
    Hope you get it working.
    With kind regards

  • Unable to burn DVD with iMovie?

    Am fairly dissapointed with Apple.
I have spent time today creating a short movie of photos of my 2 month old son.
When trying to share with iDVD I have realised that my iLife 11 doesn't come with this software and I can't download it!
I am therefore unable to burn my project to disc and feel I have wasted my time.
In my opinion this seriously reduces the usablility of iMovie.
Is there anyway I can burn the DVD without spending a shed load of cash on some third party software??
    Thanks

I was also disappointed when I bought my Mac and it came without iWeb and iDVD.
For burning DVDs, I use a free app called Burn http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/Pages/English/home.html.
You can't do fancy menus or anything that iDVD can, but at least you can get your iMovie Projects onto a DVD.
You have to export your project from iMovie and then drag the .m4v or .mov file that comes out onto Burn (Make sure the Video tab at the top is selected.
Of course, if you have a MacBook Air, you'll need an external optical drive capable of burning DVDs.

  • Unable to copy database with different name in the same instance

I had a huge database and wanted to try some change optimization changes.
So wanted to make a copy of the database along with data in the same instance.
I have tried copy database wizard several times but always see the error as in attachment.
Can someone let me know how to troubleshoot further?
If this is not the correct way please suggest how do i copy a database with different name in the same instance along with data.

    Hi Nandu,
From the screenshot, the error 1813 happens when corrupt database log is attempted to attach to the SQL Server. To work around this issue, please preform the following steps, for more details, please review this
    blog.
    1. Create a new database with same name which you want to recover. Make sure that the MDF file and LDF file have same name with previous database data and log file.
    2. Stop SQL Server. Move original MDF file from old location to new location by replacing just created MDF file. Delete the LDF file of new location just created.
    3. Start SQL Server. At this point, the database is in suspect status.
    4. Make sure that system tables of Master database allows to update the values. Please note that you will be performing this in query window.
    Use Master
    go
    sp_configure 'allow updates',1
    reconfigure with override
    go
    5. Change database mode to emergency mode.
    SELECT *
    FROM sysdatabases
    WHERE name = 'DatabaseName'
    BEGIN
    UPDATE sysdatabases
    SET status = 32768
    WHERE name = ' DatabaseName '
    COMMIT TRAN
    6. Restart SQL Server. Then execute the following DBCC command in query window to create new log file.
    DBCC TRACEON (3604)
    DBCC REBUILD_LOG(databasename,'c:\yourdatabasename_log.ldf')
    GO
    7. Reset the database status using following command.
    sp_RESETSTATUS yourdatabasename
    GO
    8. Turn off the update to system tables of Master database running following script.
    USE MASTER
    GO
    sp_CONFIGURE 'allow updates',0
    RECONFIGURE WITH OVERRIDE
    GO
    9. Reset the database status to previous status.
    BEGIN
    UPDATE sysdatabases
SET status = (value retrieved in first query of step 5)
    WHERE name = 'DatabaseName‘
    COMMIT TRAN
    GO
Make sure that you have done all the steps in order and restarted SQL Server where it is mentioned. Also run SQL Server Management Studio as administrator.(Right click-> Run as Administrator)
    Thanks,
    Lydia Zhang

  • Settings for 1 DVD with 2 movies

I would like to put 2 movies on one DVD using FCP, compressor & DVD SP (in that order). One movie is 39 minutes and the other is 87. Total minutes: 126
When compressing my QT export from FCP and choosing my settings in Compressor 2, do I choose DVD:Best quality 150 for each movie or DVD Best Quality 90 for each movie. I just need to know if I choose my settings based on my target total DVD length or the target length of each movie on the DVD.
AND why is that when I choose 150 minutes there is a little tag under the quality tab in the inspector box that states: Allows up to 118 minutes of video on a DVD-S I thought I chose 150?

    Hi:
You must take in account the total lenght in minutes to fit in your disc to choose the encoding preset: 126 min.
The key factor is encoding your audio to Dolby 2.0 (AC3). Thet will give you a smaller audio file and let you use more bitrate with your video. Using the original AIFF/PCM audio mot probably will give you some high bitrate error during building and/or playback errors in DVD players.
You can try using the 120 min MPEG2 preset; you are close to that lenght and "probably" the final files fit in the DVD-5.
If it doesn't , use the 150 min settings.
    Hope it helps !

  • Watching a digital copy dvd with itunes

I downloaded a digial copy of a dvd to itunes, but it will not allow me to play the dvd.  I entered the code and it looks like it downloaded correctly but there is "!" symbol in the far left column.  How do I get the dvd to play now?

Sorry but no, not without buying another copy of the DVD.

  • Need to copy home movies using Insignia dvd/vhs recorder

I have been attempting for 4 years now to copy my vhs home movies onto dvd.  I purchased an Insignia dvd/vhs recorder for this purpose.  I finally have been successful in recording the dvd where it will play back on the Insignia machine I copied it on but when I send copies to others or try to test the dvd in another player, it will not play the video.  I have tried several types of DVDs as I was told it matters.  I though the DVD-R was the correct one to use because it reads that it will play back in video players.  At least I can play these back on the recorder but I need them to be able to play for those others I have copied them for and for down the road when we the children no longer have this particular recorder.   The dvds finally play back on the recorder but not on my sons dvd player.  Everything I have read says dvds must be finalized but when I go to menu and then dvd, the menu will not let me arrow up to the finalize part.  What can I do?  This is so frustrating and I feel an urgency to get these home movies onto dvd.

Your DVDs do need to be finalized in order to be viewable on other players.
Suggest you sit down with the manual for your unit and read it.  It should tell you, step by step, how to record and finalize the disc.

  • Trying to Copy Home Movie DVDs

I create all of my company's training DVDs. Accordingly, a co-worker has asked me to copy some DVDs of home movies he has. To my knowledge there are no copyright issues.
Is there a way I can copy these using FCE/IDVD or disk utlity?

Here it is on a plate - using Disk Utility:-
    Duplicating a CD or DVD
You can use Disk Utility to quickly copy many types of CDs and DVDs. In the steps below, you'll create a disk image of the disc, and then use that image to burn copies.
Disk Utility cannot create usable copies of discs that use an incompatible format or are copy protected. These include most movie DVDs and audio CDs and some software and data discs.
Insert the CD or DVD disc in your computer's optical drive and select it in the list of disks and volumes.
Choose File > New > "Disk Image from [name of disc]."
Type a name for the disk image.
Choose "compressed" or "read-only" from the Image Format pop-up menu.
Choose "compressed" to create a smaller disk image, and choose "read-only" to create a disk image that's quicker to create and open.
    Click Save.
After Disk Utility creates the disk image, eject the original CD or DVD.
Select the disk image in the list of disks and volumes, and choose Images > Burn.
When the Burn Disc dialog appears, insert a blank CD or DVD, and then click Burn.
You can continue using the disk image to create as many duplicate discs as you need.

  • How can i import my home movies i had put on DVD?

Does anyone know how to import a dvd of home movies into imovie?

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

  • I can not  daowload to the I movie a DVD with video inside

I am unable to copy Dvd made by mi
    in to IMOVIE  ....
i check the dvd on a tv via DVD,   and is working fine
i can download  photo with music no problem    but not    a dvd   with video inside
    thank you     TONY

You need to rip the DVD to mp4 before importing.
    Download Handbrake (free, Google it).
Insert the DVD to your computer. DVD Player will come up. Quit it.
Open Handbrake. Rip the DVD to a file on your desktop.
Import that file from your desktop into iMovie.

  • Can I burn hd home movies to dvd in itunes after importing them into my itunes library

Can I burn to dvd, HD home movies from a HD camera in itunes after importing them in my itunes library

I don't have iTunes set to manage my music but if I move an item to the trash that is the file iTunes uses, it will still play in iTunes until I empty the trash.  Of course at that point it is permanently gone so if that was my keeper file then I have messed up.
One overlying recommendation is to back up your computer before doing the editing.  If you make a mistake you can always go back and try again.
