Unable to copy to USB disk on AirPort Network??

I just set up my new AirPort Extreme & hooked up a printer & USB drive via a HUB connected to the AirPort Extreme. All works well, except when I try to copy files from my MacBook Pro to the USB drive, I get the message:
"You cannot copy some of these items to the destination because their names are too long or contain invalid characteres for the destination. Do you want to skp copying these items and continue copying the other items?"
I have no problem copying these files to a direct conncected drive.
Why am I getting this message & what do I do to be able to copy all my files?
Thanks
  Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Protocol between an airdisk and a directly attached drive is not necessarily the same.
File names can make a difference, some characters are not supported, others might have unexpected effects ( a file called Freddy/1978.jpg could be seen as a path)
However it seems you disk might be being seen as only supporting short file names.
Try connecting your drive directly again, reformatting Mac OS extended (HFS+) and giving your drive a new simple name (ie AIRDISK1)

  • Unable to access shared USB Disks on Airport Extreme using Leopard

I have a Mac Book Pro, iMac and Mac Mini all running Leopard with all of the latest updates. I use an Airport Extreme (also patched to the latest updates), and it has a 100 GB USB drive attached.
When I was running OS X Tiger, all of my devices could connect to the shared USB drive and store files. Now that I've upgraded all of my platforms to Leopard, none of them can access the USB drive. If I try to open the disk using Finder I get the following error:
"The operation cannot be completed because the original item for "Shared Disk 1" cannot be found."
Anyone have a clue as to how to fix this?

  • Backup to USB disk on AirPort Extreme fails

I have been using Backup to save files from my MacBooc to a USB Disk connected to my AirPort Extreme. Since I've installed Snow Leopard this doesn't work any longer. Backup keeps saying that it is 'Waiting for volume AirPortDisk', although the requested volume is available. It is visible on my desktop and I can open it and browse the old backup incremental files.

  • Every time I connect my USB Disk, the airport restarts

I am having problems getting the disk to work with the Airport Extreme. Every time I turn the disk on, it makes the Airport restart and the light turns to amber. Has anyone else had this problem? Any solutions?

If you have tried everything else -
and you have the data backed-up.
I'd suggest plugging the USB disk into a Mac and formatting it as HFS.

  • AEBn: Unable to Connect to USB Disk

I was reading the previous post about USB Disks attached to the AEBn and the inability to connect to them. I am using 7.1.1, but this was occurring when I was using 7.1 as well. I was wondering if anyone has gotten past this...
    Thanks!

I can see my AirDisk in the AirPort Utility, but
    it
won't appear on the desktop so I can access it.
    Any
    suggestions? How is that possible?
I'm on a MacBook Pro with the new AEBS, running
    7.1.1
    firmware.
That's normal. You may have to access it at least
once. Can you mount to it using the Finder - Go -
    Connect to server?
An you can also create a 3 line AppleScript, say named MountDisk.scpt:
    tell application "Finder"
mount volume "afp://<ServerName>.local./<VolumeName>" as user name "<username>" with password "<password>"
    end tell
replacing <ServerName> with the Bonjour name of your AEBSn (this is the same name displayed in the Airport Utility title bar after the dash), <VolumeName> the name of the volume you created on the USB drive (the folder name as it appears in the Airport Utility - Disks - Disks) , and <username> and <password>, as the appropriate values that you set up in accordance with the "File Sharing" selections under Disks - File Sharing - Secure Shared Disks [I personally selected "With base station password]).
Put the script in your User Scripts - Personal Scripts folder. You may also add it to your login items and it will be invoked every time you start OS X. For multiple folders, add more "mount" lines, one per folder.
    Enjoy.

  • Unable to print to USB printer over the network

    Hi all,
I have an iMac and an Macbook Air, both running 10.6.4, and I've got an HP LaserJet 1200 printer connected to the iMac by USB. Both machines are on my home wireless network (Linksys, FWIW).
I seem to be unable to print to the LaserJet over the network from my Air. I've tried all manner of permutations of printer setup on the Air: IPP/LPD/HP JetDirect; entering the hostname (*.local) and the IP address of the host; leaving the queue blank and not; and leaving "Print Using" as generic vs selecting the LaserJet drivers. The printers appear in the "Default" Add Printer menu as Bonjour Shared, but this doesn't seem to work either.
Following other threads, I've tooled around with CUPS (resetting the configuration file, etc.), with no success. The other threads I've found on the subject seem to be more specifically addressed to folks trying to use an AirPort.
Any suggestions for what to try next?

In that case, let me elaborate on what happens when I try to set up the printer via Bonjour, in case there are any clues in the behavior that I'm seeing. The printer seems to appear twice in the "Default" pane, with Kind as 'Bonjour Shared' and Printer Names as follows:
    HP LaserJet 1200 @ (hostname)
    HP LaserJet 1200 @ (hostname) @ (hostname)
Selecting the first, it displays "Gathering printer information..." for a few minutes, then strikes out, suggesting Generic PostScript Printer rather than the correct driver. Whether I stick with that or select the correct driver manually and then try to print, it hangs on 'Copying print data..." (in the print queue).
Selecting the second, it gathers printer information only for a second or two before settling on Generic PostScript Printer. If I stick with Generic PostScript Printer, it hangs on 'Connected to printer...' but if I select the correct driver, it hangs on 'Copying print data...' again.

  • USB disk almost kills network

    Hi all,
I've recently bought and installed an USB disk (which I formatted as HFS+). The system works fine, and the USB disk speed is compatible with one's expectations, but there is a problem: my network becomes completely sluggish when the disk is powered on.
I mean: if it's off, no problem. If I turn it on, everything ok but the network slows down close to a halt. If I eject the disk and don't power it off, same thing. As soon as I power it off, all fine again.
My network talks to the world via ADSL, which I access through a LAN. It's as if the presence of the disk caused some sort of address confusion for the ethernet port, but I can't see how this is. I've tried the usual stuff – changing USB port, permission repair, all that I could. Any hints?
    Thanks a lot in advance,
    M.

Hi BDAqua, it has A/C. Since you ask, it is plugged on the same line as my Digitus Network interface, which basically carries network signals on a power line, since we don't have dedicated cabling in the studio. It works smoothly (the Digitus) but I've discovered in the past that it is sensitive to which power line you use: straight into the wall, fine; if through an adaptor, sometimes it has problems. Anyway, I've tried moving the disk away from such line and onto another – nothing changes.

  • Mac to mac copy slows down over internal airport network

This is a strange problem but here goes...
    Some useful background info:
I have recently downloaded through the new Airport Express network I just created a file that was 212MB from a site on the internet in about 12 minutes or so which is pretty fast for a DSL connection.
    The issue:
When I try to copy files from a PowerBook G4 running Leopard 10.5.2 to an iMac G5 running the same version of the OS, I see the same odd behavior (copying from Public folder to any folder on the iMac):
The copy starts in the finder just fine and seems to be going very fast as expected by an internal network copy but after some arbitrary amount of time, the copy slows down and eventually fails. The time to complete the transfer starts out really fast and eventually hits a brick wall where it slows down further and further.
Other notes: the copy I've been attempting is files and folder that are about 1GB total but I've tried it with small and large copies and this has worked fine in the past with Leopard and other OS'.
Sometimes, this slowdown occurs at 5MB into the copy, other times it doesn't happen until it gets about 50MB into the copy. Thew strange thing is, large files over the Internet are just fine as I mentioned above.
There's plenty of free space on the machine that I'm copying to but this happens repeatedly when I try to copy from one computer running Leopard to another.
I don't think this issue is related to the Airport Express because I recently created a new network to test this issue called Bedroom Airport Express. Previously, when I'd been successful performing these types of transfers, I was using the LinkSys WRT54G's built in wireless capabilities and had no issues using Go To and entering the computer's IP address.
When this issue started to occur, I was baffled so I hooked up the extra Airport Express I had lying around and I'm still seeing the same issue despite the Internet transfers working like gangbusters.
The router is still the WRT54G on AT&T's DSL network using DHCP and there's no special config., other than that I had to re-IP the internal network to 192.168.199.1 for work related reasons but that's about it.
The MTU had to be increased to 1492 for the internet to work properly when I got my first WRT54G [an older version of this device that I replaced very recently with a new one]. The firm ware version of the router is v8.00.2 and the Airport Express has been recently updated to the latest firmware available (and this issue was occurring before the firmware upgrade as I added the Airport Express as an troubleshooting method).
Does anyone know where I should begin to try to resolve this issue? I've tried LinkSys tech suppport and I still get "we're not able to provide Mac tech support" reply despite the fact that addressing the router is done via a webpage and the BSD guts under the hood. If anyone knows what if anything I can do to troubleshoot what the issue is, I would greatly appreciate the assistance.
This networking stuff is a bit of a black art to those of us that are dilletantes in this arena and I certainly qualify as a dabbler in this stuff.
    Thanks in advance,

I'm new to the Apple discussions, although not new to Apple computers and I've seen that this post has received quite a few views but no responses. Maybe someone could direct me to the right place to post this, if this is not that place, or, suggest some terminal tools that I could use to troubleshoot the issue with the Airport network or LinkSys Router I'm using [WTR54G v.8.0.0.x]? Thanks in advance for any assistance anyone can provide to a networking noobie.

  • Computer to computer copy slows down over internal airport network over time

This is a strange problem but here goes...
    Some useful background info:
I have recently successfully downloaded a 212MB file from a site on the internet through a new Apple Airport Express network I just created as a troubleshooting method in about 12 minutes or so and I don't seem to have any slowing down issues with internet connections to websites and downloads.
The issue I seeing with internal network copies:
When I try to copy files from an Apple PowerBook G4 running Leopard 10.5.2 to an iMac G5 running the same version of the OS, copies over the internal network exhibit a very odd behavior. The copy is from the Power Book G4's Public folder to any folder on the iMac.
The copy starts in The Finder just fine and seems to be going very fast as expected by an internal network copy but after some short arbitrary amount of time, the copy slows down, the estimated times grows slowly but consistently for the copy to complete and eventually the OS says there was a problem and the copy fails. There's no error number of message other than the copy couldn't be completed. As I mentioned above, the time to complete the transfer id initially estimated as a very short amount of time but eventually, the copy action hits a brick wall where it slows down further and further until it fails.
Other notes: the copy I've been attempting consists of files and folders that are of various sizes but I've tried it with small and large copies and this has worked fine in the past with Leopard and other, older OS' over the WRT54G's wireless network. I created the Airport Express network to see if that would solve this problem but it hasn't which makes me think the issue is with the router and not the wireless network.
    Additional details:
Sometimes, the reported copy slowdown occurs at 5MB into the copy, other times it doesn't happen until it gets about 50MB into the copy. What's strange to me is, large file downloads over the Internet are just fine. There does appear to be some burst that degrades a bit over time but not like the internal network copy's speed which just drops off really quickly.
I have been successful in the past copying from Mac to Mac over this exact same router using the WTR54G's wireless network but I started having problems fairly recently and now the copy doesn't finish over the WRT54G or the Airport Express network that I recently created to see if the issue was with the WRT54G's wireless network settings or hardware.
There's plenty of free space on the machine that I'm copying to but this happens repeatedly when I try to copy from one computer running Leopard to another.
I don't think this issue is related to the Airport Express because I recently created a new network to test this issue called Bedroom Airport Express. The firmware version of the WTR54G router is v8.00.2 and the Airport Express has been recently updated to the latest firmware available (this issue was occurring over the WRT54G's wireless network before the firmware upgrade to the Airport Express).

I've been using a LinkSys router for a long time with a Mac/PC internal network that connects to the internet and computers inside the internal network for many years now and have had few issues.
    Thanks in advance,

  • Partitioned USB disk on Airport Extreme n?

Since the new base stations are not in users' hands yet, I hope someone can give me some thoughts on it.
I would like to use one of my Lacie D2 drives with a new base station, but will need to partition the drive for internal reasons. Any thoughts on what a partitioned drive might present, i.e. will only 1 partition be visible, or will all partitions mount by default?
    Any thoughts appreciated

  • USB drive on airport network?

I have installed a usb 50 gig drive to my airport base station. The airport utility "sees" it. I have all the settings correct (as far as I can tell- sharing etc.)
However my iMac connected via the LAN to the base station will not see it and neither will my laptop on the network. Neither does the airport disk utility. Sounds as if I am leaving out some simple but critical step in the process? Any advice is, as always, much appreciated.

I had the same issue in that most USB drives seem to be preformatted NTFS and once I connected directly to my MacBook Air and ran the WD drive utility and reformatted to MAC file system it worked. My AEBS recognizes the drive now in the Airport Utility and I can even map a network drive from my Windows PC.
But, I have tried all suggestions and I simply still cannot get the MacBook air to map a drive/mount the volume. I keep getting this error saying the thing is already connected to your system try and use it locally or some such thing.
It's really pathetic that I can access the Mac formatted drive on a Apple router with my Windows PC but can't get it to work on my MacBook Air.
Any other ideas out there or wait for update? I have ran all the latest updates available 10.5.2 on Leopard and 7.2.1 on the base station. Again, the base station seems fine and I can access it with Windows so the problem must lie with the MacBook itself. I am connecting the MacBook over wireless and the Windows PC over hardwire - don't know if that makes a difference.

  • Unable to activate ethernet port to bridge airport network to wired clients

    Hi,
I have two AE setup in a WDS arrangement. The WDS is working fine. My problem is that I want to connect wired clients to the remote station; but everytime I select "Enable ethernet port" and restart the AE, the option is unchecked and the ethernet port is disabled.
    Can you help?
    Many thanks,
    David.

    ... everytime I
select "Enable ethernet port" and restart the AE, the
option is unchecked and the ethernet port is
    disabled.
I saw similar behavior in my setup. I seem to have gotten it working now.
Finally, I actually attached an ethernet cable and wired client to the AE Ethernet port (instead of just trying to configure it without an actual client connected, which I tried several times). After that, when I checked the box for Enable and restarted the AE, it worked.
    Did you get yours working?

  • Can I watch iTunes-purchased movies from an Airport Extreme USB disk?

With the newest Airport firmware (7.6.1), it seems I should be able to do this.
My scenario is so basic, I can't understand why I'm having trouble achieving this.
    - I have a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.7.2 - since it's a laptop, I don't want to leave it on all the time.
    - I have an AirPort Extreme with a USB disk on it (that I use for backing up my MacBook), recently upgraded to newest firmware 7.6.1.
    - I have a recently purchased Apple TV hard-wired to the AirPort running firmware 4.4.4.
    - I have purchased movies though iTunes on the MacBook Pro.
I want to watch my iTunes-purchased movies on my Apple TV even when my MacBook Pro is sleeping. That is, I would like the movies to be accessible via iCloud, or stored on the USB disk connected to AirPort Extreme, or something/anything.
It seems obvious to me that with an all-Apple set up, and iCloud, this should be easy to achieve.
    What am I missing?
    Thanks,
    j

Really? I need to check that out!
You should certainly be able to add content by reference to itunes from such a disk (even before the update) - so long as itunes knows the location of the file (set Preferences not to copy to local library when adding the media) it will stream it to AppleTV if the disk is available.
I hope you're right, but I'd be surprised if current Extremes can be upgarded to provide a full Home Sharing service - marvellous if they can but I'd be surprised as i've long said we need an Apple media server either based on TC or AE to do this kind of thing.

My Airport Extreme disconnects randomly when USB disk is attached, I have searched this forum but found now obvious solution.

Hi - I have been on the phone with support 4X since late December - all good calls. They have been scratching their heads on this issue.
I have 2 printers and 2 drives on the airport -recent experieinces = printers have always behaved, drives have appeared / vanished / "drive needs repair" and it's just fine...
Cutting out the interim fixes, here are the simple but important solutions and everything has been stable for days now.
    * rolled back to AEBS firmware 7.1.1
    * replaced the passive USB hub with a powered hub ** This is when joy arrived
    * make sure your drive has a block size of 512
You can run guest mode however you want, since adding the new hub, it hasn't mattered.
I haven't been brave enough to upgrade firmware to 7.2.1
    cheers

  • Deleted files from USB Disk attached to Airport Extreme

I deleted files from a USB disk attached to my airport extreme.  I then needed to recover them  but they are not in the trash can...how can I find and restore these files?  I have not emptied the trash.  I am just looking in the trash in my bar at the bottom bar.  I got the message that asked if I wanted to send them to the trash and I said yes...help, I need the files!
    Thanks,
    Josh

Unfortunately, as the message clearly states.....the file(s) will be deleted immediately....not moved to the trash.
If you want to experiment, a utility like Disk Warrior might be able to salvage some of the data on the disk....IF....you have not made any changes on the disk since you deleted the files.
    http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/
But, it will be much quicker to simply restore a copy of the file(s) from your backups.
