Unable to create a recovery image

Hello,
I've just bought an HP Pavillion x2, it has a 64 GB SSD.  I want to create a recovery image using the HP utility but when I try to it fails. I think it is because there isn't enough space on the Windows partition in order to create the image.  I have a USB drive plugged in with 27GB free but it seems like it's creating the image on the C drive before it copies to the USB drive. I don't want to delete my recovery partition until I know I've got another copy and I can't find anything else to uninstall to get the 14 GB i need (have 12 GB free). I've only had the tablet a few days so haven't got much on here, have uninstalled everything I've put on here except for the Windows updates I did. I've cleared the temp file wimy user profile.
Does anyone have any ideas what I can do?
Thanks
Juliet

I did go through the Windows routine of creating a recovery image but it was slightly vague as to whether it would be suitable. Anyway I eventually restored the machine to factory defaults, created the recovery image straight away and it worked fine, then after installing Win 8.1 I ended up with loads more free space anyway.

  • W530 unable to create factory recovery disc's

Hi all, Happy with new W530 but unable to create factory recovery discs.. Searched and found possible solutions in knowledge base and forum but none worked Until know Files for recovery media not found... (although i have two lenovo recovery partitions on SDD) Called support and they offered website to order recovery disc's (not for free???) Ok... then..filling in the necessay forms and providing all data ended up in not able to choose for Dutch language recovey disc's . How to proceed?

In my opinion, there should be a secure way for the owner of the machine to download the images in .ISO format so you can burn them.  Of course information would need to be verified to prove you are entitled to do so, but this doesn't need to be overly complicated.
Don't forget you can always get a Windows 7 disk and use the serial number under your battery to install Windows from scratch.
The only time I use the factory image disk set is if I decide to sell a machine.  I'll image it back to the factory state.  It's a pretty rare event.

  • Unable to Create a Disk Image of Device

    Hello.
The MacIntosh is a Mac Mini w/1.83Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo. The OS is Snow Leopard, 10.6.2. I am unable to create a disk image of the device "Macintosh HD".
    Here's my procedure:
    1) Reboot the Mac Mini from the Snow Leopard Install Disk
    2) Set Language and then load "Disk Utility"
    3) Select the Macintosh HD from Disk Utility
    4) Set "Create a New Image from Macintosh HD"
    5) Leave the settings as they are (type of disk image is "compressed" target repository is root home dir)
    6) Error message is "Unable to create Macintosh HD (error -61)"
    7) When I then try to create a blank disk image, once again, with root home as repository the error message is "Unable to create name.dmg (read-only) file system"
    Any suggestions how to fix?
    Thanks
    Mike

you can smb from terminal but it will not help you. you'll need to create a folder which will serve as the mount point first and where will you put it? you can not do it on the dvd. and you can not put it in the main drive itself. but why do you need to do it that way at all. there is no need to boot from the DVD period. boot normally and clone your hard drive to a remote disk image on an smb share using one of many backup programs that can do this. Superduper can do it. so can CCCloner.

  • Unable to create a 'computer image' for system recovery purposes using an external drive!

Just finished another very frustrating long session with HP Tech Support without a resolution to a simple problem.
This laptop is only 4 months old, but the hard drive is failing, according to constant notifications, and repeated BIOS hard drive diagnostic tests.
I wanted to be sure that all back-up/system restore precautions were taken.  Not much to 'back-up' because the laptop is new.  The standard 'back-up' was easily done on a 4 GB flash drive.
I followed instructions for 'create a system image' in order to make a 'copy of the drives required to restore your computer if your hard drive or computer ever stops working' (instructions right on the page).
I wanted to create this 'system image' on an external flash drive.  First attempt at storing a system image failed because:  'the drive is not formatted with NTSF.  The G flash drive was easily formatted to NTSF.  Repeated attempts at copying now failed because:  'the drive is not a valid back-up location'  (!?).
I see absolutely no clear reason why a 'computer image' cannot be created on a flash drive that has been correctly formatted.
HP Tech Support claims that the reason for this is a 'Windows incompatibility with the program' (used to create a 'system image?).
No solution was given.  According to HP Tech Support, this is now a 'Windows software problem', which doesn't make any sense to me.
Standard CD-R data disks (the only ones I have on hand now) are not big enough: 700 MB capacity, but a DVD-R data disk, which has 4.7 GB capacity, may not be enough (especially in the future) for the creation of a 'system image'.
Since HP Tech Support is incapable of solving a straightforward problem like this, I am asking for some more experience tech geek to bring me up to speed on this whole issue of 'system image' creation, for the purpose of computer restoration, as I am hesitant to go ahead and remove the hard drive, if I haven't properly done everything to 'back-up' as much as I can.

Again:  HP Tech Support cannot answer this question for me.
I posted the above problem onto the Windows Recovery forum also.
There are super-experienced people that view these questions.  (I meant the term 'geek' in an appreciative way:  without users solving problems, everything would grind to a halt!).
Please, if there is anyone who can comment on this, whether the whole issue of 'system image' is redundant, whether it is necessary at all, I would be grateful for a stab at this.
I have the sense that the answer is staring me right in the face, yet even HP Tech Support has no idea what it is.

  • Unable to create restore disk image with Disk Utility

I've tried three times in order to create a restore image of the users' volume of my Powerbook. I followed exactly the procedure explained typing "man asr" in a terminal window. I booted the Powerbook in target disk mode while connected to my iMac G5 from which Disk utility was run. Every time the disk image creation failed with a log report like this:
    Creating Image “HOME_HD.dmg”
    Initializing...
    Copying...
    /Volumes/HOME_HD: Authentication error
    Initializing...

    Unable to create “HOME_HD” - Input/output error.
I don't know how my imported music could create such a problem to Disk utility, nevertheless I removed the incriminated song from the Music library but another one raised to be not accessible. Then I booted the powerbook from the supplied Tiger DVD too, and I got an error over the music file, something about an allocation that was 190 instead of 1, I got the volume repaired from Disk utility but the Disk image creation failed again without any hint because booting from DVD does not allow to save log file anywhere. Why on Earth I can't manage such a critical task as back up under Tiger while using Panther everything worked like a charm following the same procedure? Is anyone experiencing something similar?
    Greetings
    Gianmarco

Hi Lee, thank you for your answer, indeed I've just read carefully your article few hours ago, while I googled the net to find some hints on my issue. I think that I've followed exactly the right procedure to make the back up image, and can't find what is wrong. Actually Disk utility Repair disk successfully repaired the allocation bit (whatever that means) of the music files but that wasn't enough to let the creation of the disk image. Quite odd that the music files where recognized as messed up by Disk utility only booting from Tiger DVD and not while the Powerbook was connected to an iMac running Tiger too.
I'll do further investigation during weekend.
    Greetings

  • Unable to create a disk image for mass deployment or to restore on other

I am attempting to create a master 10.5 Leopard image that can be deployed to other Macs, but the restore process fails with the following error:
*Restore Failure. Could not find any scan information. The source image needs to be imagedscanned/scanned for restore.*
I setup the master as I want it. I've booted from another drive and used Disk Utility to create a new image from Folder. (If I try to create a new image from drive, I get an error that the disk is in use.) I've run the checksum. I've run the scan image for restore. All process with out any errors.
The error mentioned above occurs when I try to restore the image to another computer.
Has anyone else been able to make a master image for deployment without using Leopard Server?

    Hello,
I am also getting a similar error, but not trying to create an image, but rather reading one I created before upgrading to Leopard. I was having some HD trouble (power surge during install of Quicktime 7.3) that put my HD in any unstable state (resistant to Disk Utility/Disk Warrior,) but fortunately, I'd cloned the HD w/ SuperDuper (anticipating possible trouble during the upgrade.) I then made a disk image of the BOOTCAMP partition on another drive. Now, after re-formatting the HD, installing Leopard and partitioning for Bootcamp, I am unable to scan the image before restoring the disk image to the HD. It might be a FAT32 thing, but I don't think so.
The error is: Unable to scan "disk0s3.dmg". (Invalid argument)
    The disk utility log is:
    2007-11-08 20:33:43 +0100: Scanning image “disk0s3.dmg”
    2007-11-08 20:33:53 +0100: cannot scan read/write images.

  • Unable to create Media Recovery Disc on two Pavilion 15-e084ca units. F2 test fails as well.

    Hi,
Just purchased two Pavilion 15 Notebooks E1X77UA#ABL (Win 8-64bit) and have been unable to create Recovery Disks on both machines (managed to get several new coasters though . The optical drive is a CDDVDW SU-208CB SATA CdRom Device.
Tried several different brands of DVD media: Maxwell DVD-R, Verbatim DVD-R, Maxwell DVD+. Tried all these on a different machine and could burn to all of them. After several attempts, managed to get one set done on one of the machines. I'm not sure if it is normal or not but this took several hours.
Using the EFI diag routine (f2), running the diagnostic for optical drives, read write test fails on both machines and all media types listed above and also on various CDs as well. The error message: "the inserted Media is not the correct type"
When the first device failed, I contacted HP via chat and it was suggested that I return the laptop for replacement. However, now that I have two units showing the same issue, I feel that a thrid unit will just end up being the same problem.
Anyone else experiencing issues with this machine or drive? Could this be a firmware or bios issue? Thank you for any suggestions that you may have.

  • Why suddenly unable to create a disk image from a CD?

I successfully created a disk image from a CD only 5 days ago. Now when I try to create a disk image from a CD (with Disk Utility) the Superdrive rumbles along for sveral minutes, while the progress bar indicates that it has reached the end of its progress.
Only after all that does a dialog box indicate:
"Unable to create "___.dmg"-Invalid Argument. "
I haven't added software but did upgrade to iTunes 6. Doubtful that could affect my abilty to create a disk image.
Would someone kindly shed some light on why this may be happening?
    Steve

Is it strange that this problem seems CD-specific?
Some CDs are copy-protected and some CDs are not copy-protected; so, no, it's not strange at all that you should be able to copy some CDs and not be able to copy others.

  • Unable to create a Disk Image

    Hi!
I am trying to backup my boot HD to a disk image, a sparse bundle. I have done this successfully in the past using Carbon Copy Cloner and Super Duper, but this time I am getting an error message in both programs — "The image creation procedure  failed". I have tried two internal HDs on my Mac Pro, and then an external Firewire HD as a target area for the disk image, and I get a same result. FInally I just tried to use OS X Disk Utility to create a disk image from scratch, and this also fails with a dialog "Unable to create name.sparsebundle, Resource Busy".
I can see there is some systemic issue here, but I don't understand what could that be. I would appreciate any wisdom on the matter, as I really have to backup my HD. Thanks in advance!

    Hello,
I'm having the same problem. Re-installing the operating system fixed it, but I think Onyx messed it up again. Still not sure what it is that is causing it.
Reverting the setting on Onyx did not fix, and I don't want to go about re-installing again.
I'm wondering if you have run Onyx on your system lately?

  • Unable to create blank CD image

I am unable to create a blank MS-DOS FAT CD image using Disk Utility.
    New Image
    size: 663 (CD-ROM 80min)
    Format: MS-DOS (FAT)
    Encryption: none
    Partitions CD/DVD
    Image Format: read/write disk image
Hit [Create] button then progress bar appears and moves to completion. Then an error message box appears that says "Unable to create "test2.dmg." (Invalid argument)
Need to get this done so I can create gift CD's of my photos so if you know a work around for buidling a PC compatible CD I can take that too.
Thanks so much for your help.
    Frank

    Allan,
    Thanks for the response.
I am making photo CDs for the parents of my son's soccer team. On each CD I put the JPEG originals plus a Flash slide show.
In the past this is what I have done:
    1. In Disk Utility -> New Image with above parameters
    2. Mount the new image
    3. Put JPEGS and flash show on the image
    4. In Disk Utility, select the image and select Burn
If I do this with MS-DOS (FAT) format, then anyone can read it (PC or MAC). If I use the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) then it can only be read on a MAC.
Can you think of another way to create a data CD?
    Thanks!

  • Unable to create RnR recovery media on Z60m

I have a Z60m (2529-FKG) with XP Pro. I intend to replace the HD (100GB -> 300GB) and at the same time reinstall XP.
Q1) I have an XP Pro OEM CD. Can I just use that to install, using the XP Pro key from my Z60m? Which XP Pro key should I use -- the one from the bottom of the machine, or the "-OEM-" one that System Properties shows, or the one shown by the "secret keyfinder" utilities?
Q2) Once I have a clean XP Pro install, I'll need to install a limited set of drivers (and possibly selected tools e.g. power manager) from the ThinkVantage set. Will I still be able to install these on a "non-factory" XP Pro install? Does the "check its a Lenovo/IBM" check the BIOS string or the OS or check for existence of the recovery partition or what?
I want to retain the option of the RnR recovery partition functionality (in case I ever decide I really really wanted the bloatware-version of XP Pro that it gives me...).
I hadn't previously created RnR recovery media so I tried to create the media using Start->ThinkVantage->Create Recovery Media. It fails with an "encountered a problem; send error report" dialog.
I am currently on RnR 3.0.027. Lenovo support wouldn't send me the media without charge and suggested I upgrade to a later version of RnR instead. I downloaded the 3.0.{025,027} -> 3.1.042 upgrade, but it fails to install claiming that the installed copy of Rescue and Recovery - Client Security Solution.msi "does not match the installed source". The notes for RnR 4.2 state that it can't be used to upgrade RnR 3.0.x, and that it requires CSS 8.2 (I currently have CSS 6.0 installed).
Q3) Should I uninstall RnR 3.0 & CSS 6.0 then install RnR 4.2 and CSS8.2? Will that cause any problems? I don't have any "secure drive" files, or any backups I need to keep (I'll be making a new set using standard tools). But I do have fingerprint security configured for power/disk passwords...
Q4) Or can I copy the recovery partition and keep the "press blue" functionality some other way e.g. by using a partition copying tool (or Linux dd /dev/sdaX ...) to copy the MBR and the recovery partition onto the new drive? Does it matter which primary partition the recovery partition goes onto?
    Thanks in advance
    Misha

hello mishad welcome to the forums
A1)you say that you have an OEM version of xp?does it belong to lenovo?did it come with your system??you can usually use such kind of cd's with recovery cd set you obtain with your computer.
regarding your other query no you cannot use the key from the COA sticker on your system  to install the OEM version of xp you have
A2)if you want to create recovery media in the future and ensure that the hidden partition is created then you have to make the recovery media from the hidden partition of your system only
A3)if you install the OEM verison of xp(which  OEM does it belong to?)you have to activate your system manually that would mean you are not using a licensed copy of windows coz that OEM cd was not intented to be installed on your system
if you clearly read the  EULA of microsoft you can notice that xp can be installed only on one pc at a time..so i think you got my point
A4)regarding the thinkwantage technologies issue yeah you may be able to install the power option and all no doubt...the bios does not check whether its your xp or not for that purpose
A5)but if you do use the xp(OEM) one which you intend to install the BIOS will check for it.......rememebr your copy of windows you obtained from lenovo is PRE-ACTIVATED at the factory itself.......
A6)in any case use the recovery cds from the xp you have from lenovo aka the hidden partition in the future if you want to reformat every thing the hidden partition will be created by the lenovo recovery discs once again.IF YOU USE OTHER XP CD YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO CREATE A RECOVERY PARITION ON THE NEW HDD
    hope this info helps
    Cheers and regards,

  • What other methods are there to re-install Win 8.1 pro without losing files & programs, if I am unable to update my Recovery image?

So I am thinking my Windows 8.1 Pro needs a refresh, but I have not ran "recimg /createimage C:\*" for a while and because of the problems I have. I cannot create a new one, it just wont work and I've had a post on here about that issue for a while
now and nothing has worked.  So I know I need to re-install windows but I really want to be able to keep my Programs & files.
So my question is, are there any other methods to re-install Windows 8.1 pro without losing my programs?
That's the reason I have not just done a reinstall, because of the time and effort needed to do this in a timely manner.  Also I need to keep my programs APPDATA intact so that my applications still work as they do now, some programs have got months
of history and data.  Also I am not certain I still have the installers for some of my applications, I know I can get them but again its the time it would take.
This is why I run a separate backup of my APPDATA DIR, am I right in thinking that If I did have to reinstall that I could just restore the old APPDATA data to the new Install and my programs would automatically have all there normal settings?
    So what are my options?
    Thanks peeps.
    JK MCP

Isn't that only used when a PC will not boot?
What options does booting with this give me?
    Thanks

    Hi,
USB recovery disk was used to recover your system when it encounter problem. You can try to use it to fix your problem instead reinstall system. However, there is no method to keep your program whenreinstall system.

  • Unable to create from an image

    Hi,
First use of Kuler/Color CC. 'm logged in, but I cannot get the 'Create from image' function to work - I've tried uploading a number of images as a jpg, gif, bmp, png, but on each occasion I get the 'Selected file type is not supported' message. Is there something I've been overlooking? Any advice gratefully received.
    Nick

    Hi musti168,
You're going through your entire image pixel-by-pixel and getting each of their values - why don't you just use the IMAQ ImageToArray function?
On this forum post I found an example of IMAQ ArrayToImage: http://forums.ni.com/t5/LabVIEW/IMAQ-arraytoimage-example/td-p/68418
You can use some of the IMAQ Image Processing palette to change the image to gray scale - possibly a threshold.

  • Unable to create cd from Image file

I downloaded the Solaris 8 for Intel, unzipped the files. I have been unsuccessful creating an image file for the file sol-8-1_01-fcs-bin-ia-v1. I have tried various CD writing applications.
I was able to create images from the other files.
    Thanks

You are not supposed to create an image file from the unzipped data. These unzipped files are image
files! You just have to rename them using the proper file extension so that your CD-R burning software
recognizes them as cd image files. (common extension are .ISO or .RAW; check with your CD recording
    software)

  • Create a Recovery Set?

Still have the message 'Create a Recovery Set' under Updates & Tuneups.  My PC seems to be working OK.  Is it necessary to create a recovery set as the techs where I bought the Notebook said "no need as it's built in"?
Have a Pavilion Windows 8.1 64 Bit, Product No. F6C64PA#ABG.
Not sure what to do, if IT IS necessary am I best to use DVD-RW or stick?  Will it take up much disc space if any?
Sorry, am a newby with all this.

It would be very wise to create a usb recovery flash drive.
It is  the copy of the OS and drivers that you paid for and the best method to recover the operating system to a new hard disk if the original one fails.
The techs at the place where you bought it gave you poor advice.
I highly recommend that you go with the usb recovery media. Sandisk flash drives don't work. Don't use flash drives with the Windows 8 logo on them.
