Unable to create an encrypted disk image with Disk Utility
Hi:
With our upgrade to Lion a few weeks ago, we're now unable to create an encrypted disk image of any type using Disk Utility any more. This problem occurs on 3 different machines, and is reproducible whether one is using an internal HD or an external FW HD. We can successfully create nonencrypted disk images.
This is a duplicate post with all the details here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/18469359#18469359
We haven't had any luck with a solution trying various permissions fixes as helpfully suggested by other readers in response to the error message # (-60008 error), so I'm hoping that someone else has run across a solution from the encrypted disk image perspective and that this tag line will generate some help.
Thank you!

This says password strength is "Weak"
All works fine
Then I repeated this using:

Can't create disk image with Disk Utility
I just upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion and i can no longer create disk images with Disk Utility in order to store encrypted data.
The operation fails and ends with the post :
Failed to create disk image, error:
hdiutil: create failed - Resource busy
I use three Macs with Mountain Lion, and this problem occurs only on one of the three.
I check the disk, repair permissions and did a reset of the PRAM. I even did a reinstall of Mountain Lion, without success.
But curiously, using a new user account, I was able to create a first disk image. But no one after.Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Try the action that you're having trouble with again. Post any messages that appear in the Console window – the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
DO NOT INDISCRIMINATELY DUMP THOUSANDS OF LINES FROM THE LOG INTO A MESSAGE. If you do that, I will not respond.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting. -
Creating a mp3 disk image with disk utility
Hi,
I'd like to create a mp3 disk image with disk utility. In the end I would like to have a mp3 disk that plays in various stero system and macs.
But I want to add some additional files: a png file for a nice folder background of the dmg, a special image for the dmg, and some text files relating to the mp3s.
Is this possible at all? Is there something I have to observe creating the dmg?
Thanx for your helpIs this possible at all? Is there something I have to observe creating the dmg?
You need to know which file systems your "various stereo systems" understand. The default file system created on a diskimage when burning is a hybrid file system- HFS+, ISO-9660 with Rock Ridge, and Joliet with Rock Ridge. -
Trouble creating a small disk image with Disk Utility
When I try to create a disk image using Disk Utility the size option for 2.5MB is grayed out and I cannot override this by manually entering the size I want. Ideally, I would like to create a 500KB-1MB size image to store 1 or 2 files that I want encrypted. Thanks for any help.
Choose a filesystem which isn't journaled to get the 5MB option; if you want to create a 2.5MB image, specify Mac OS Standard or MS-DOS. Some disk formats have a minimum size.

Unable to create restore disk image with Disk Utility
I've tried three times in order to create a restore image of the users' volume of my Powerbook. I followed exactly the procedure explained typing "man asr" in a terminal window. I booted the Powerbook in target disk mode while connected to my iMac G5 from which Disk utility was run. Every time the disk image creation failed with a log report like this:
Creating Image HOME_HD.dmg
Initializing...
Copying...
/Volumes/HOME_HD: Authentication error

Unable to create HOME_HD - Input/output error.
I don't know how my imported music could create such a problem to Disk utility, nevertheless I removed the incriminated song from the Music library but another one raised to be not accessible. Then I booted the powerbook from the supplied Tiger DVD too, and I got an error over the music file, something about an allocation that was 190 instead of 1, I got the volume repaired from Disk utility but the Disk image creation failed again without any hint because booting from DVD does not allow to save log file anywhere. Why on Earth I can't manage such a critical task as back up under Tiger while using Panther everything worked like a charm following the same procedure? Is anyone experiencing something similar?
Greetings
GianmarcoHi Lee, thank you for your answer, indeed I've just read carefully your article few hours ago, while I googled the net to find some hints on my issue. I think that I've followed exactly the right procedure to make the back up image, and can't find what is wrong. Actually Disk utility Repair disk successfully repaired the allocation bit (whatever that means) of the music files but that wasn't enough to let the creation of the disk image. Quite odd that the music files where recognized as messed up by Disk utility only booting from Tiger DVD and not while the Powerbook was connected to an iMac running Tiger too.
I'll do further investigation during weekend.
Greetings

Trying To Create Encrypted Disk Images With Disk Utility.
I am trying to create encrypted read and write Disk Images of around 2 GB to 6 GB with Disk Utility.
More often than not the dmg is NOT encrypted.
It seems very hit and miss . . . . most of the time missing!
Is this process notoriously unreliable or am I likely to be doing something wrong?I think you have cracked it Niel!
I made another, unchecking the Keychain box, and it worked perfectly.
I have been using a password which is used for other items.
Now the .dmg has been created can I check the Keychain box and if so what are the benefits?
I have never understood what the Keychain does. -
How do you create a disk image using Disk Copy?
Hello,
Is there any way you can create a disk image using Disc Copy? Is there a better way to create a Disk Image?
I would like to burn two copies of a 4.2 gig folder on my mac. I usually insert a blank DVD-R and then the mac asks if I would like to prepare it at which point I click "yes". An icon of a DVD disk appears on the desktop and then I drag my files onto this icon. It takes a few moments to create the disc image and then I click "burn". However, after the disc is burned the disc image disappears and I have to start all over again if I want to make another copy.
How can I save this disc image? If I could save the disc image, it would enable me to burn a second DVD right after the first without having to create the disk image all over again. This would save a lot if time.
I am using OS 10.1.5
Thank you for any suggestionsThanks Niel for the info about creating a Disk Image with the Disk Copy utility in OS 10.1.5
That worked however when I insert a blank DVD-R, the disk image still has to be copied to the DVD-R buffer and then it can be burned. And so this doesn't really save any steps - the "copying into the buffer" step still has to occur whether or not you have created a disk image of your files. So creating a disk image doesn't really shorten the process of burning multiple copies of a DVD.
I will try to describe the steps more clearly:
Two of the three steps for creating a DVD (steps 2 and 3) are very time-consuming:
1. put blank DVD into the drive (a DVD disk icon quickly appears)
2. drag files onto this icon (this step takes a long time as the files are copied into the buffer)
3. choose "burn" (the actual burning also takes a long time)
I was hoping that when I create two or more DVDs of the same files, I could first create a Disk image so that when I create the second DVD, step 2 could be skipped. That does not seem to be the case - the disk image still has to be re-loaded. And so I think I will not bother with the Disk image idea - it doesn't seem to be necessary or helpful when burning DVDs to backup data.
Thanks for your suggestion. -
Hi, I would like to know, if it is possible to burn a idvd disk image with a pc.
(I want to get a macbook, and since I already own a pc with a dvd-burner I think it would be best to save the 200 $ and just get the cheapest model. I still want to be able to burn a few iDVD Projekts so the question is, what kind of format iDvD saves the images in - iso or some fancy mac format?)link to CONVERT AND BURN MAC .DMG OR .IMG FILES TO .ISO WINDOWS PC-COMPATIBLE DISK IMAGES: ...

Unable to create an encrypted disk image in Lion
disk utility gives the error Unable to create "Volume.dmg." (error - 60008) when creating an encrypted disk image. I am using the following steps:
1. Open disk utility
2. Select the disk (internal or external) to create the image on
3. Select File>New>Blank Disk Image…
4. Save As: 'Volume'
5. Name: Volume
6. Size: 50GB
7. Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
8. Encryption: 128-bit AES encryption
9. Image Format: read/write disk image
10. Click the Create button
11. Password dialog appears
12. When I enter a password the dialog closes after entering only a few characters i.e. before I've finished typing, and the following error message displays:
Unable to create "Volume.dmg." (error - 60008)
I have previously, successfully, created encrypted disk images in Snow Leopard, and I don't know why I can't in Lion
Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks for this Thomas.
I've tried naming the image differently, but still received the error, I did however try different permutations for the password.
The error seems to happen if I use a purely numerical password string and occurs on input of the 10th numerical character, if I start with numerical character but use an alpha before the 9th number I can continue and create a password, and I can create a password if I start with an alpha and switch to numerals after the first alpha character, purely alphabetical passwords are fine too.
It seems that Lion doesn't like purely numerical passwords greater than 9 characters, whereas Snow Leopard wasn't so fussy. Seems it's a bit of a bug.
Thanks for your help -
Create encrypted disk image with OS install disk utility.
I thought to make a full backup of Macintosh HD, and followed instructions in /kb/ht1553. However, every time I tried to creae an encrypted disk image, it barfed with "Failed - User interaction required". I assume it needed the encryption password, but for some reason was unable to display a prompt for this. Anyone know how to fix this? Thanks, Stephen.
Create an encrypted sparse disk image instead of from folder, mount it, and then drag & drop your files into ii.

TOTAL 320.4MJust ran into the same problem suddenly - checked /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/ and in the Versions folder there was a bad symbolic link of Current to a non-existent folder D. The only version was in a folder named A, so in /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/Versions/ I did the following:
sudo rm Current
sudo ln -s A Current
then cd .. to /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/ and
sudo rm Resources
(which was now a bad symlink to the previous /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/Versions/Current/Resourc es/), and then created a new symlink:
sudo ln -s Versions/Current/Resources/ Resources
Went and tried to mount a .dmg image and it was successful, and could also run Disk Utility again.
I have no idea why the /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/Versions/Current symlink was pointing to a non-existent "D" folder, or what process did it, but this fixed the problem.
nb: Booting into Recovery Mode and running Disk Utility from there, repairing the disk and permissions did nothing to solve the problem, had to do it manually. If there was more than one version folder, you would have to determine which is the correct one to link Current to. -
Open An Encrypted, Password Protected Saprsebundle Disk Image With iPhone?
Is it possible to open an encrypted, password protected sparsebundle disk image using an iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch that is stored on a NAS drive connected to an AirPort Extreme Base Station?
If so, how do I do it?
If not, would you be able to explain why not?
Thanks, AlexHi Robert,

to have a regular user
That's not really true. Sudo is one of the most flexible commands around and not only can a regular user use it but they can use it without a password. Mind you I'm not suggesting that you make all users admins; you can specify both of these privileges for this command only. All you have to do is to put a line like the following in your /etc/sudoers file. (with sudo visudo of course)
ALL ALL = NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/hdiutil create -encryption -certificate*-stdinpass -type SPARSE -fs "HFS+" -volname-size
I've included wildcards so that the cert file, volume name, size and image are arbitrary but the others must be in the user's command to qualify. I realize that you'll want different options to use FileVault certs but I don't know how to do that so I used your original example as my example.
Of course it wouldn't be that easy for your lusers to get all of those options correct so the next thing you do is to wrap the command, with it's sudo preface, in a shell script that parses the cert file, volume name, size and image from the options the user passes to the script and puts those into the command with the right syntax. If you want to get really fancy, the script could prompt the user for any arguments that were omitted. Your lusers will think that you created this really cool command and never know that sudo was involved.

Encrypted disk image with recovery key
I am trying to create an encrypted disk image that can also be recovered with the use of a key. It is basically trying to do what FileVault does where you have a password to get in, but there is a Master password that can recover the image if you forget/lose your password. I have pieced the basic concepts together, but it isn't working. First I create the certificates that I believe I need with a keychain using the certtool command.
certtool y c k=SecureKey.keychain
certtool c k=~/Library/Keychains/SecureKey.keychain o= SecureKey.cer
I went with the RSA 1024 bit and SHA-1 stuff (that is the technically term for it).
After that, I tried creating the image. I am in the same directory that the SecureKey.cer file is in, so that shouldn't be an issue. Also if it can't find the certificate, it tells you that. Here is the command I used.
hdiutil create -encryption -certificate SecureKey.cer -stdinpass -type SPARSE -fs "HFS+" -volname TestVolName -size 20g TestImage
and that returned
hdiutil: create failed - error 0x8001184e
Does anyone have any thoughts on what I did wrong? Thanks.Hi Robert,

Creating floppy disk images (from Disk Utility) recognized by Parallels
Hi there,
After making the Parallels plunge last week, and installing a couple of my old OS's in it, I unearthed my old MS-DOS 6.22 disks. (remember that, boys and girls?)
With the help of my brother, I managed to export the contents onto a USB flash drive in the hopes of creating the necessary .fdd files that Parallels uses to create a virtual DOS machine.
(FYI - I already have DOSBox installed... but now with Parallels, I was looking to install the real deal)
Normally, renaming a .dmg file (created through Disk Utility) to a .fdd should force Mac OS to associate the image with Parallels, and thus allowing it to be recognized as a valid floppy image.
Unfortunately, this hasn't been the case for me. Parallels cannot recognize the disk images created as floppy drive images. Even after formatting the volume as both MS-DOS and MS-DOS (FAT 16), nothing seems to work.
I've already checked the Parallels forums, but couldn't drudge up anything. I was hoping one of the Level 3+'s here had some experience with this.
Am I missing something in the Disk Utility .dmg creation process of these files, or would I need a separate application to create a valid .img/.ima file to get this to work?
Thanks!
SteveI am also having this issue. If I figure it out I'll post my solution. If anybody has had success it would be very helpful to know how they made proper images.

Must use disk image with toast or I get coasters
I have four DVD-R 'coasters' behind me. When I went to burn 4X in Toast, I got verification errors each time. So I created a disc image from the Video_TS folder and that worked fine with Toast.
I don't have an inkling what is going on here. Any guesses?
--CrisBy compatibility, I was not referring to compatibilty of the burned disk with various players. I was referring to the compatibility of Toast with the computer/operating system. I contend that Toast has become an unstable product in regard to the issue I raised. That may be argued, but please do not conflate this with another issue.
That being said, the advice of removing superfluous layout file and empty PAR folder that DVDSP writes to the Video_TS file is something I should try.
Perhaps it is germane to the issue at hand. Even if it is not, why chance things with regard to player compatibility?
However, my inclination is to export disk images from now on, so I probably won't give myself that chance.
****, I can't resist a control.
I will delete the above mentioned layout file and empty PAR folder from the Video_TS folder and report back if Toast chokes or not.
The Video_TS folder was written by DVDSP3 to a clean 20 GB partition on a clean 300 GB internal Seagate 'Barricuda' 7200 rpm Ultra ATA drive. The image file, also on this partition, was added later. It is outside the Video_TS folder.
