Unable to create smart album

Hi,
I am using iPhoto 6.0.6. Yesterday I wanted to create a new smart album. But after choosing "File" => "New Smart Album" nothing happens. I do not get a dialog box.I can create a normal album. book and calendar. I created a new library but taht did not help either.
I have searched for an answer but could not find anything.
Hope that someone of you will have a solution.
Thanks in advance.

the troubleshooting basics:
1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
2. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the home / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and make a library there, see if the problem is repeated. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • Unable to create smart albums as metadata does not register

I recently upgraded to 3.0 and have imported/upgraded my previous albums. All the images show up and have the appropriate metadata, but when I go to create a smart album only the images uploaded and tagged in the last two weeks (that is, directly into Aperture 3.0 and not upgraded from 2.0) show up. Any suggestions on how to get 3.0 to register the metadata (particularly keywords) from the earlier images?

As long as you have let Aperture run long enough to process all images (check via "Window→Show Activity"), then I suggest repairing and if needed rebuilding your library. It won't harm anything (usually). Full directions are here:

  • Creating Smart Albums problem

I'm on pg 132 of Aperture 2 Pro training book. I'm stuck at #4 which states "The images matching the search criteria appear in the Browser." They don't for me. The HUD is set up for, Rating (checked) "is greater than or equal to" is selected and set at 5 star as per instructed. After completing and closing HUD as instructed, why are all the images in lesson 2 still showing in the browser instead of just the 5 star for this Smart Album? Maybe I'm missing the point but according to what they state as I repeated above this seems incorrect.
So far I'm not too impressed with the way this book is written. On the same page of Creating Smart Albums, #2 states to rename the untitled Smart Album and then press Return. According to the book this would apply the name to the Query HUD, which it didn't. It wasn't until I finally pressed the Magnifying Icon that I could get it to register onto the Query HUD. They left that bit of info out. One of several over looked steps.
    Your help will be appreciated.

    Hi Tony,
The steps you suggested were previously done and yes the smart album was selected. Nothing would work until I clicked on an (x) in the right side of the "Full text search or Limited text search" field just to the right of "match." Once I hit that (x), it disappeared and every thing began to work as expected. Why the (x) was there while nothing appeared in that field is puzzling but I will probably figure it out as I proceed. I did click in that field once in my attempts. That must have froze the operation some how.
Many thanks for your contribution. I'm sure you will be seeing more of me here as I plow through this not so well edited tutorial.

  • Cannot create smart album?

I'm trying to create my first smart album in iPhoto 8.1.1 , but seem to be missing the right UI elements.
This is what I see: http://imgur.com/28LWS
Note that I cannot see any add button to add criteria to the smart album.
This is the preinstalled version of iPhoto that came with iLife on a MBPro.
(I'm only about 1 week in as a Mac user, so I could've overlooked something easy.)
    Thanks for your time.

To my knowledge, I have not changed any fonts, however based on your question I should note that I had also been unable to edit events, and after reading this thread,
"Can't edit 'Event name' in iPhoto"
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1079297
I followed the instructions in this support article:
"Some fonts may appear incorrectly rendered"
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24904?viewlocale=en_US
Which had me execute the following steps (cut and paste from the article, so you don;t have to go there). Perhaps this is related?
    1. Log in with an administrator account (or a user account that allows you to install software, make changes, and so on).
    2. Open the Terminal application from Applications/Utilities.
    3. Cut-and-paste (or carefully type) the following text at the prompt:
    sudo rm -r /Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS
    4. Press the 'Enter' key.
    5. When prompted for your password, enter the password you use to login (or install software) and press the 'Enter' key again.
    6. Close the Terminal application and restart the computer. The fonts should now look properly rendered.
This article was able to solve my event editing problem.

  • Can't create smart album?

I recently imported my iPhoto library into Aperature.
I'd now like to create a series of projects for each year of photos, i.e., 2002, 2003, 2004, etc.  Inside these main projects, I'd like to create a series of smart albums for each month, i.e., August, and make the rule "date is in the range" and then incorporate each date range as 08/01/2002 to 08/31/2002.  When I create the smart albums, however, no photos appear in them, even though I can see the photos in the iPhoto folders.
I created the main project and then created a smart album inside the main project.  Can someone let me know what I might be doing wrong?
    Thanks!
    lsb

Yes, Library and 2002 are two separate sources.  I clicked on Library when creating the smart album and this time the smart album created in the 2002 project folder.
However, when I go back to Library, the thumbnail area is still blank and when I click on it there are no images.
If I return to the project and click on the smart album within the project, the images appear.
If I return to the project and click on the project box, no images appear.
When I click on my other projects that were created by direct camera imports-the images appear.
The images I'm trying to work with now are images I imported from iPhoto.
I'd like use projects for years instead of folders if I can, but if you think it's not possible, then I will go back to folders.
Maybe I'm finding the library structure confusing because all events come in as projects and are listed as projects and I'd like my iPhoto library to be mirrored in this structure.
    Thanks!

  • Creating smart album based on multiple albums

    Hi,
I would like to create a smart album based on the ratings of the photo and based on more than 1 album. Is this possible? because when i do try to base the condition on more than 1 album, no photos in my smart album show up.
    Thank you.

    crouton800:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. No, that won't work A smart album can only search one album to display a specific rating photo in that album. That is, the criteria would be Album is A and rating is 5 star with the "all" selected.
That's because the All or Any criteria prevent you from trying to find only the 5 star photos in Album A and B. If you use the "all" criteria you'll get no hits and if you use the "any" criteria you'll get all of the photos in both A and B.
Also you can't have a smart folder, only a smart album.
What you need is for the following criteria to be invoked:
Album is A and rating is 5
    and
Album is B and rating is 5
and that can't be done with the present application.
You can get around this limitation by assigning a unique keyword to every photo in Album A, B and future albums in that folder. Then do a a smart album with the criteria:
    Keyword is "xxxx"
    Rating is 5 star
    and have the "All" selected.

  • Create smart album with ONLY some faces

Hi. I need some help here. I created a smart album and I want it to have photos where only my girlfriend and I appear. I put two conditions: Face-is-my_name, and Face-is-mygirlfriend'sname. The problem is that it creates the album but it also contains photos where we and someone else appears, not only the two of us. Is there any way I can get it done?
    Thanks for your posts.

Yes, I said to meet ALL conditions, and my smart album is in fact just like you said, with photos that have both of us but also other people.
But I get it, the only way to exclude other people is specifically by name. I just wanted to know if there was another "more automatic" way. Thanks a lot LarryHN.

  • Unable to Create Smart Collection in Bridge CC

I've recently ungraded to Bridge CC, and one of the first things I wanted to get set up again are my smart collections. When I click the "new smart collection" icon the dialog box appears, I specify the type of folder I want to create (exactly how I have done hundreds of times before in CS6) and then I hit "Save" and nothing happens? It shows an active blue "save" button, but when I hit save nothing happens? Anyone else experience anything like this?

I just found an article to which you had replied Jim.
Your comment leads me to believe that my assumption was correct ... if the NAS is connected (original images) then the histogram in the Develop Module should show "Original+Smart Previews".

  • How to create a smart album with only one particular person in it

    I have 3 kids. S, O, and E.
All my photos are tagged with keywords, one for each childs name. I would like to create smart albums for each of my kids that contain only photos of them in it ie. no photos that have other people in it like family photos or photos of all 3 kids.
For example, album 'S' should only have pics of S in it, and exclude any pictures of 'S playing with O', or family photos where S is with mum and dad.
The only way i know how is to use the 'does not contain' or 'is not' and exclude all other names. Is there an easier way to do this?

You could add a keyword to group photos and then add a rule to exclude the group photos.

  • Aperture ... Bug .... timezones and smart albums

    Hello everyone,
i've just jumped into the mac world a week ago, just bought my first macbook ! Yeah !
I decided to give Aperture a try, and given i've played with it now for 2 days, if this bug I found is really there, NO WAY am I going to pay for such software !
I've been using Picasa on PC for the past couple years now.
Its handling my photo library extremely well: over 50gb of photos, 10 years worth of photos.
So after looking at all the Aperture videos on the apple site, I decided to give it a try to replace my picasa, since there is no picasa for my new mac.
The bug I found (and I'm a newbie !, 2 days of playing, struggling to import my pictures, and bam ... bug .... hummmm).
I tried importing only 1 folder in my library.
I'm french and this summer, went to USA for holiday. Western deserts and all.
    So, I took my folder:
    2008 08 09 - USA Grand West
    And tried importing it.
It contains around 100 photos of the 1st 3 days of the trip.
My camera was set to French time, so at import I appreciated the "Change time thingy" and set it to Los Angeles time.
Did the import in a new project.
    Great.
All pictures in the project. Exif Date updated to los angeles time. GREAT !
    Now.
I want to have them show up on a day to day basis.
So, I created smart albums giving the date I wanted.
    August 9 2008, August 10 2008 and August 11 2008.
It DOES NOT WORK ! BUGGGGGGGG
photos taken on the 3rd day, having correct EXIF date metadata, show 11/08/2008 for the date (correct), however they are not shown in the August 11 2008 album !
They are shown in the August 12 2008 album !
    Reason !
The smart album is using the wrond date. The French one.
Since there is 11 hours difference.
Some late August 11 (Los Angeles time) pictures are pushed to August 12 (early morning French time).
Am I the only one with this bug ?
The only fix I found for now that works, is adding 3 rules to the smart albums:
    - exif: day of the month = 11
    - exif: month of the yar = 08
    - exif: year = 2008
    That works.
However there is NO WAY, i'm setting up 50gb worth of smart albums having to apply 3 specific rules to compensate for a bugged out calendar rule that does not work.
    Any ideas ? fixes ?
    Thanks
    Regards
    Tim

Hum, i'm not sure I understand what is going on, or what you are describing.
you say: "... Aperture is correct in it's assertion the image was taken on 12th"
    I dont understand.
When i've done the import, and look at that pictures metadata, the date/time is corrected. It shows up as 15:42 20080811 (youre writting).
So if the metadata is correct, I really dont understand how the computers time and timezone has any effect on the smart albums ... could you explain ?
Unless what you are suggesting, is that the smart album date is applied to the computers time zone, and thus when searching for the files, it automatically does a conversion of the time of the picture to fit the computers timezone => thus my 15:42 20080811 set to Los Angeles time zone, is researched using a French timezone and thus found on 00:42 20080812 ?
Wow, if so, this would be a stretch !
And if this is the answer, I do not understand the "feature" to import using a different time zone, and not be able to search according to it ?
    There is effectively no point?
In respect to the workaround you describe. Its effectively what I did, I sorted using 3 criterias: exif day of the month = 11, month of the year = 08, year = 2008. And for some reason that works !
Would there be another workaround? Instead of using the TimeZone panel, import them untouched, and doing a batch Time change on the pictures once imported and leaving them at the same Paris timezone, but compensating for 9 hours, effectively, bringing them to 15:42 Paris time, instead of Los Angeles time ?
If my memory is correct when having played with this, the batch time modification, did not compensate the days: Effectively, clicking 9 times on the down arrow when showing 00:42 12th did not change the 12th into an 11th ...

  • Can't set smart album pictures as desktop backgrounds.

i have imported 'without copying to library' a whole bunch of pics into iphoto and have created smart albums. now i went to 'change desktop background' by control clicking on the desktop and am selecting a pictures from one of the smart albums but its only displaying a blue background. this is true for all smart albums and normals ones as well. when i select an image from the other folders they work fine. what could be the reason?
the primary reason of importing stuff to iphoto was so that they are easily available across applications.

    simport
Do you know of any reason why the Desktop pref pane should not be able to use photos in a "referenced" iphoto library
It's just the nature of the beast.
but I just don't trust it enough to do what it will with my photos by having them stored in the iPhoto library.
    What are you afraid of?
When you import a pic into iPhoto in the default Managed mode all it does is make a byte by byte copy of the pic. Nothing else. It's an exact copy. It makes no alterations, adds nothing, removes nothing.
The pic is stored in the Finder. Yes, it's in a Unix Style Package file, but apart from all the ways to access your pics I'll describe in a moment, if you want to look inside the package you can do so at any time: Simply right click on the iPhoto Library and select 'Show Package Contents' from the resulting menu. A Finder window will open and you'll see the Library inside.
There are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three core folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner. (As your Library is referenced the files will be aliases rather than the actual files.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
Remember: iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
Running a referenced library has a number of pitfalls - apart from the fact that System Preferences cannot use the files.
    1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
Always allowing for personal preference, I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, there are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
Your choice, obviously, but best to be aware of all the ramifications. By all means post back if you require more info.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Other information that may offer comfort:
Events in the iPhoto Window correspond exactly with the Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library package file (Right click on it in the Pictures Folder -> Show Package Contents).
You can move photos between Events, you can rename Events, edit them, create them, as long as you do it via the iPhoto Window. Check out the Info Pane (wee 'i', lower left) the name and date fields are editable. Edit a Event Name using the Info Pane, the Event Folder in iPhoto Library/Originals will also have the new name.
Mind you, I don't suggest that you change over in one go. I think the best thing to do is create a new Library (Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library') and set it as a Managed Library. Import 50 or 100 pics an explore it, see how it works and see if that does anything for your confidence.

  • Smart album using keyword not working

I'm creating smart albums using keywords. Today I created two smart albums tagging select photos with key words. One album has worked correctly, the other album is empty, showing only black background. I've confirmed photos are tagged with the one key word, I've confirmed the key word exists in the list. I can't figure out why the smart album is not generating.

Try going to the Q tab and get rid of all the search field by clicking the circle at the right hand side, leaving only the Keywords field, then ensure the rating field is at unrated or better as this field cannot be removed. Allan

  • Time zone adjustments and smart album filters

I just returned from a photo safari in Southeast Asia and while there I had my cameras set to the correct local time (GMT+7). Upon importing to Aperture I set both Camera Time and Actual TIme to the right place and chugged ahead. Now when I look at an actual image file's info the time is 'adjusted' for MST (my home time zone) but in Aperture the Meta Tooltips and Metadata show the GMT+7 time.
Now I want to create Smart Albums with the photos from each day from my (two) cameras. I've tried using the Date and Calendar filters but they both seem to use the MST time rather than the appropriate 'local' time. If I add "GMT" to the Date filter is does filter by GMT but that's not the result I want either.
Any hints on how to get this right?

    Neil,
I've been struggling with similar issues to varying degrees for some time now. I have found it extremely frustrating in my attempts to adjust the date to reflect proper time zones and local times. The only time it seems to "get it right" is when I have my camera set to my local time zone, shoot in my local time zone and upload to my computer in my local time zone.
This is all fine and dandy for when I am shooting locally, but the reality for any photographer is that you never shoot just locally. That said, I have sought help on this issue myself and wrung my head to try to find an answer.
Thus far, I have come to one possible conclusion. It may have something to do with the way the computer's time zone is set in the system preferences. If you have the time zone set to "set time zone automatically using current location" this could throw things off. I am not certain about this, but I think it may have something to do with what is going on.
In your case, you had set the camera to the proper time zone, and when you imported the images, you set the camera and actual time zones to the proper time. However, if you have the time zone setting to set automatically based on location and you didn't import (or upload) the images in that time zone, it may throw things off.
For example, you set your camera for Cambodia time. You then import your images in New York. you set the camera time and the actual time to Cambodia time, but the computer time zone is set to New York EST. I think if you turn off (if you have it on in the first place) the automatic time zone setting, it may solve your problem. You may even have to set the time zone on your computer to the local time zone that you took the pictures in.
Aperture is really vague about how to go about doing this. It seems like it should be really simple and straight forward, but for months I have been scratching my head trying to figure out what is going wrong. It got me all confused as to what the camera time means and what the actual time means, etc.
Anyway, I am not sure if this is the answer that you are looking for. I am looking for answers myself, but rather than start my own thread, I thought I would chime in on yours to see if we can't get the ball rolling with some other users.
