Unable to create the portable home directory for this user

This is driving me nuts!
I have a network user who I can login to on any machine on the network. I want a PHD to be created on a laptop and eveytime I answer 'yes' to 'create PHD for this user' I get the "unable to create the PHD for this user" message.
What am I doing wrong?

I fixed this by unbinding the laptop from the od server as I had used this user previously for PHD's on this machine. Setting up the machine to bind to OD again and all is well.

  • Never - Create a portable home directory on this computer now?

I have kinda the opposite problem from normal. I have Home Directories and PHD's working fine. I think it is working as expected, with one exception...
My Daughter has an iMac at my office. I set up her account as PHD so she could also use the account from home. (We SOMETIMES go home <g>) But when I log on as her from one of the other desktops at the office, I get the dialog: "Create a portable home directory on this computer now?". I answer never. And it keeps coming up. Does Never not mean Never?

    Hello,
I started a thread concerning the opposite phenomenon, when you once click "Never" it seems you cannot change your mind and get the question asked again ... maybe you could contribute to answer the question ?

I guess the settings preventing the dialog from coming up are stored on the client machine ?

  • Single Student home directory for Multiple users

    Hi all,
I'm currently working in an education environment and we have 4x labs of mac's. Currently, when students log in, their login info/permissions are pulled from AD and OD. When they login for the first time, it creates a local home directory with their username, so when they login subsequent times they still get all their saved movies, music and pictures. Nothing special.
We are aiming to change over to a new system in which the students login with thier username/pass, but they all use the same local home directory called 'student' (which will actually be refreshing with the default-homedir-refresh script by Bombich). To compliment this, as they will not be able to use thier movies folder, we will have a seperate partition on the computer in which they save all thier work. Idealy, we would like the files that one user saves not to be accessable (deleted) by another student, but i'm not sure if this is possible even though they have logged in using different username/passwords, as they are all using the same directory. To add to this, the users will also have thier network space mounted on login (as its on a novell server, currently we mount it by specifying the address in WGM under preferences->login items, with Mount item with user's name and password checked).
    My questions are
    1) how do we get the students to use the single 'student' home directory?
    2) If we have a separate partition set up for them, will the files they create have the permissions assigned to the individual users or will they all be able to access each others file as they will use the single 'student' home directory.
    3) Will our method of mounting their Novell drive still work with the new system?

    I can't help asking: Why?
Might help if we knew exactly what sort of issues you are trying to avoid, since you're moving away from what appears to be a perfectly functional setup

  • Can't change home directory for standard users (admin is OK)

I'm can't relocate home directories for standard users.  Relocating works fine for admin users.
When a standard user logs in, they get a message (paraphased) saying "the home directory is not available.  If it is located on a server, the server might not be online".  If I change the standard user to admin, this message goes away, and everything is fine.
    I created a standard user
moved the home directory using the terminal as root: mv UserName  /otherlocation/UserName
I then went into users and groups, other options and changed the home directory location.
Rebooted, then tried to log in as the standard users.
Next try - Deleted the standard user and created the same user with admin rights.  Followed the above steps and everything works fine.
I don't want this user to have admin rights on my system.  Any ideas

    Hi,
the AFP is has always been switched on. As for the path I believe this to be correct. The path I am using is:
    afp://musicserver/Users
I'm not at the server right now so I mat have got the afp and : and / in the wrong order here but they are correct on the server.
This however does not seem to put the a folder in the Users folder. Could it be something to do with my external hard drive? I am using a Mac Mini as our server (not ideal but fine for us, or at least was) this is booted from our external hard drive. This is the main system drive which is where the Users data is also stored. I have tried all possible paths I can thing of from replacing the 'musicserver' with the IP address. I have also tried adding the name of the drive to the path (System) but all does not work.
Are you able to suggest anything I have missed? Perhaps I'm doing the path wrong?
    Thanks again
    Chris

  • Where are all the Portable Home Directory files????

    Hello all.
I am working on migrating from an all OD with PHD's on 10.5 to an AD/OD with extended schema on 10.6.
I have clients running 10.5 and 10.6 but am focused mostly on the 10.6 clients. (The 10.5's will be updated shortly) When I move the clients to the new domain, everything works great!! The new home is created on the server and on the client and all data is preserved. I am using the same scripts that I used to migrate local users to mobile accounts and it's working great.
The problem is that the PHD settings are being overwritten somewhere. When checking the Mobile Prefs immediately after the migration, they mirror the settings that I have in WGM. No login/logout sync, only sync desktop and documents, skip Microsoft User Data, etc...
However, after an undisclosed amount of time (I'm still trying to narrow this down) the prefs are overwritten and the users are able to modify the settings. Also, it seems that the "ignore" files setting in WGM is being ignored as well because the Microsoft User Data folder is being synced.
Is there a way to delete every file that has any relation with the old PHD and start completely fresh? My testing with fresh installations of SL using brand new test accounts don't have the same issues so I'm 99% sure it's not an issue with WGM settings.
Thanks and please let me know if I can provide more information.
    Nick.

What Mac do you have? MacBook?
    Version of iLIfe?
iPhoto stores and uses a package now for the iPhoto LIbrary which if you do get info and show package contents has your files and library you imported.
Might want to ask in iLife area too.

  • Portable Home Directory - no prompt to create

Not excactly sure how to explain this since I am new to MAC. We are using Kanaka 1.2 on our Macbooks and getting our user settings from Workgroup manager on our Xserve. Everything looks correct but I am not getting the prompt to create the portable home directory when 2 of my users login. These 2 users had previously logged in and when they got the "create portable home directory" message, NEVER was selected. I have deleted their accounts in \library\managed preferences. I'm not sure where else to look.
    Any help is appreciated.

I had a similar problem and found this article helpful.

It worked like a charm and I had the tech guy call me later and ask how I fixed it!

  • Using Portable Home Directory a a backup tool ?

    Hi all,
we're still figuring out if a server will be a delight or too much of a bother for our environment (5 people, Powerbooks and MacbookPro only, Airport Extreme only, lots of work being done outside the office).
Anyway, of many resolved questions, one still remains to be answered:
Could we setup a Portable Home Directory to mirror the home folder automatically and in the background ?
In other words: I come back to my table, flip open the computer and don't even realize the sync being done in the background.
The idea is to have a kind of safety net (the mirrored home folder) as a kind of up-to-date backup.
Or would it defeat the purpose of the Portable Home Directory (meaning we have no idea what it really is ... ?
    Thanks a lot in advance,
    chris
Macbook Pro 17" 2.33 C2D Glossy + Various Powerbooks   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Software always current (exept for AE Base station Firmware 5.5.1)

Ah, OK, I somehow suspected that.
So in our case (Desktop computer = Mobile computer =
One and the same machine) it wouldn't make it any
more convienient to have the home folder sync'ed to
the server and have a backup run on that mirror than
setting up a "normal" backup routine on the mobile
    computer itself ?
Actually there can still be a fairly significant benefit, and it's the primary reason I use PHDs at my law office. (Like yours, ours is a small network of fewer than 10 machines, and they're all desktop Macs.)
Having any machine go down is a major wrench in the works. So, we have a "spare" Mac that I keep up to date with our basic configuration and an administrator account. If one of my staff machines goes down, I quickly swap in the spare Mac, have the affected user log in to it, and confirm that we want to create a PHD on the spare. A few minutes later the sync is complete and, other than having to reset a few things like dock, sidebar and login items, my user is back in business. That user can happily use the spare Mac with her full home environment until the affected Mac can either be repaired or replaced. When we're ready to put the spare Mac back into its standby mode, I simply delete the staff member's PHD from it and it's ready to be pressed into service again.
I've been through this process twice since we migrated to Tiger server, and have found it to be a much faster path back to productivity than having to restore from a backup. (Although, as I said earlier, PHDs are not a backup solution and we use several Retrospect routines for that purpose.)

  • Unable to create the creative cloud files folder.

I get this message when I try to sync files to Creative Cloud folder:
I have tried the options, and to close the program and restart the computer, but no luck.

    Hi,
This looks like Creative Cloud is unable to create the Creative Cloud folder is your user home folder, are you certain that this location is 100% writable? there are no permissions stopping programs writing to this location?, its unusual that your Creative Cloud folder is missing, you must have manually moved or deleted it.
    Thanks

  • Creating the text data source for 0OI_LIFNR(TD: Carrier (Number of vendor a

    Hi
Have to create the text data source for this characteristic. Basically it is the same as 0Vendor here.
I want to make it delta enabled.
Am creating it on the view BIW_LFA1T(same as 0vendor)
Can anyone advise what can I use to make it delta enabled without any code.
Can I use numeric pointer like the 0Vendor_text.
    Many Thanks and regards,
    Kate.

when defining a data source through the admin web page, don't add '!' in front of the password.
! is needed only when configuring a data source in the mapViewerConfig.xml file.

  • Hudson - Unable to create the home directory

Hello, I installed tomcat and downloaded hudson.war and put it into
    /opt/tomcat/webapps/hudson.war
I'm able to navigate to localhost:8080/hudson, but I only see this message:
Unable to create the home directory {0}. This is most likely a permission problem.
To change the home directory, use HUDSON_HOME environment variable or set the HUDSON_HOME system property. See Container-specific documentation for more details of how to do this.
I've set HUDSON_HOME in a gazillion places -- yet none of them has done any good.
Can anyone point me to a solution?
    Thanks,

  • Can't create portable home directory

I recently changed a user's login in Active Directory (she changed her last name.) I changed her local home folder on her Mac to her new login, ran chown on the folder to update her home directory ownership to the new login name and everything was fine. She could log in and access her account using her new login. However, she now gets the message "Can't create portable home directory" when logging in. Nobody else on the machine gets that message. I understand what it's telling me, but I don't know where to look to fix it.

see how many occurrences her shortname has in netinfo and delete the second one. There is a conflict on the local machine w/ her userid and shortname or try removing the first acct and let it rebuild her new user acct on the local machine.

    Any help would be appreciated.
    Michael.

    Hi Michael,
For web site development, so you use the VS2013 express for web, am I right? We have to make sure that it is not the VS version issue.
As you said that it worked well before, did you install other add-ins or tools in your VS IDE like
    Xamarin or others?
Maybe you could disable or remove all add-ins in your VS IDE, test it again.
please also install the VS2013 update 4 in your side.
    Best Regards,
    Jack
