Unfortunately, this sort of trouble has gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (The results from mydigitallife and Major Geeks are worth checking.)
After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp. Restart the PC, and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
iTunes
Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall press on)
Bonjour
Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.

Ther other is an error message which says "Error 7 (Windows error 126). It was suggested that reinstalling itunes might solve the problem. After doing so I receive the same messages. What now?

Follow the below procedure if you are using a Windows based PC. I did not develop it, another forum user did, but I did insert 1 additional step in case you use a 3rd party software package to give your apple devices "Airprint" capability for your non Air Print capable printers (Such as Fingerprint).
Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (Later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
Remove any 3rd party software which uses Airprint features (such as Fingerprint by Collobos)
iTunes
Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support
Bonjour
Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or by right-clicking the downloaded installer and selectingRun as Administrator.

Sounds like it could be your computer and not Apple. Sounds like some registry issues and/or other underlying problems.
What are your computer specs? Year? Manufacturer? RAM? Processor (type & speed, # of cores), OS (32 bit? 64 bit? Professional? Standard?)

After trying to install last update my itunes now doesn't work- have tried reinstalling and it gets struck saying mobile device not responding. Itunes says unable to successfully install itunes.

After a message on my computer to install an update a few days ago- I now can't open Itunes and have a message saying a module isn't working and I need to re install Itunes. Try a more recent version of my advice. The "for older video cards version" may work when the default version doesn't.

After installing the latest iTunes update, I am unable to open iTunes (The program can't start because MSVCR80.dll is missing from your computer). Plugging in my iDevices won't prompt iTunes to open, either (they are viewed only as mass storage devices). (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):

(2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
(3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
(4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
