Unable to delete a Font Book Smart Group

I in the middle of making a Final Cut movie that needs some Hindi fonts. I downloaded a few and installed them, and made a smart group in Font Book to keep them all together.
For some reason, the smart group is causing Font Book to freeze. I have manually deleted the fonts I installed from my font user folder but I cannot get rid of the smart group as the moment I click on it Font Book freezes. To make things worse, when I start Final Cut it too crashes!! This is not good. Any help would be appreciated.

I solved the problem by manually deleting the Smart Group from: user/Libary/FontCollections
All seems to be working as it should...

Hannah, you better ask in a forum for your system. Which system do you have on the computer?

  • Address Book Smart Groups and Custom Fields

Anyone have issues syncing Smart Groups in Address Book? Seems like an awful waste of resources if we cannot keep that synced between MobileMe, our Mac/PC and iPhone.
Also, same issue with custom fields I've created for certain contacts. For example, I've created hours of operation for certain businesses. These fields sync into my contacts in MobileMe but it's not pushed to my iPhone. Again, such a waste to have information that cannot be maintained.

I have been advised by the .Mac team that Address Book Smart Groups cannot be synched between two (or more) computers using .Mac

  • Why Address Book Smart Group Doesn't Work?

I'm unable to find a solution to, or explination for, the following problem with Address Book and Smart Folders.
I added a custom date field for my contacts.
Set the date for one year and five days ago.
    Created Smart folder with condition:
custom date 'is not within' one year.
Well, my contact I created with custom date of one year and five days ago did not appear in the smart group I created.
But it does appear in a smart group with condition 'is within' one month.
Seems that the Smart Group is ignoring the year. Doesn't seem very smart to me, lol.
Any advice on what is going on, or how to fix it would be greatly appreciated. I've spent hours looking for answers online and haven't found anything. Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi The Zack,
In case you think you are crazy, I can confirm that in this area you are not. I just switched from years of PC drudgery to the the new Mac religion. I even switched all my email/address/calendar stuff to pure Apple. Some bumps and hiccups, but still I guess the real test is when I log back onto my old PC I feel like I am watching a rerun of a black and white sitcom.
I digress. On of my hiccups is exactly the same as yours. Address Book is always able to search. It seems a good number of the names in my address book can not be found by typing in any part of their information in the search box. I could not fix this by duplicating the address entry, but I could get it work by hand typing in a new duplicate address entry. I am hoping you and Barry discover a cleaner solution to this.
    Thx, Kmon23

  • Address Book: smart group conflict

I created a smart group in Address Book with some flawed logic and it rendered my Address Book unusable. When I launch the app, all I get is a spinning rainbow wheel, then the app crashes. I am still learning my way around the mac, so I'm looking for some advice here.
So here's my big question: Is there some way for me to delete this smart group without launching the app? I believe the app has gotten itself into a logical infinite loop when trying to build this group. If I remove the group, I believe I can get the app to work again.
If there isn't a way, can someone offer another solution?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Address Book Smart Group question

    Hello all,
I want to create a Smart Group in Address Book that compiles people according to their job title.
For example a group of everyone whose job title is 'Manager', i.e. Job Title contains Manager. But for some reason Job Title is not in the list of options when creating a Smart Group.
Is there a way to make it work?
Also, (a question for all the Snow Leopard users) is the option for Job Title there in OSX 10.6?
    I'm using Tiger 10.4.11.
    Thanks all.

There is no such field for Job Title by default. If you select the Add Field item from the Card menu you can add that field to a card. However, I do not see Job Title as a search field for a Smart Group. I assume this is a bug which you can report here: Feedback.

  • How to access Address Books "Smart Groups" on iPhone ?

Address Book on the Mac allows for the creation of both Groups and Smart Groups.
Although my Groups show up fine on the iPhone, the Smart Groups do not.
How can I access my Smart Groups on the iPhone?
    Thank you.

Unfortunately, the iPhone does not sync SmartGroups from the MacOS X Address Book, at this time. Only regular groups.

  • Address Book smart groups - can't use job title in criteria?

Trying to create a smart group in Address Book. One of the search criteria I want to use is based on information I am entering into the Job Title field. However, the Job Title field is not one of the options that is available in the drop down menu. I'm using the Job Title menu on at least 12 of the cards in my address book.
    Suggestions?

sorry, what you see in the smart group parameters is what you get. as something of a workaround you can copy the job titles into the Note filed and use that in the smart group.

  • Address book smart groups not syncing

I'm using a 3G iPhone, Macbook Pro and MobileMe. Everything is pretty much working ok, except my Address Book's smart groups don't sync to MobileMe.
My standard (non-smart) contact groups - the ones created with the + button on the bottom-left of Address Book - sync just fine, but smart groups don't. This is a real nuisance as I rely on smart groups to keep track of certain sets of contacts. Anybody got any ideas please?

Sorry to nudge, but anyone any thoughts on this?

  • Font Book Named/Grouped Fonts Incorrectly

I just switched my work computer from a PC to a Mac and have moved my fonts over. Unfortunately the font family that 90% of my work is done in is Gotham Condensed and it's not playing nicely with the Mac/FontBook.
I've got four weights: Light, Book, Medium & Bold.
When I installed these on my Mac, it organized them this way:
    Gotham Cond Light:
    Family - GothamCondensed
    Style - Medium
    Gotham Cond Book:
    Family - Gotham
    Style - Medium
    Gotham Cond Medium:
    Family - Gotham
    Style - Medium
    Gotham Cond Bold:
    Family - GothamCondensed
    Style - Medium
I could probably ignore that they're in different families, but since they're all categorized as "Medium" in FontBook and my application's font menus, it's a hassle to try out each one and hope I get the correct weight.
Does anyone know how I can fix this?

    Well... sorted it out partially...
I found where the collections are stored under the user account, and when I clicked the folder, I had no access. For some reason after the collections were deleted, it set the folder to no access. I gave myself full read/write access againa nd now can add collections.
Sadly, old collections are gone... may make a fake user and copy/paste the collections over. They were handy to have and well, can't recall all the names and fonts associated with each.

  • Cannot modify or delete an address book contact group

I created an Outlook 2010 contact group in my address book, saved it to my local contacts folder and then copied it to our firm's public Exchange based
folder so all in our company can access it for mailings.   However, once I copied it over it seemed to lock the group,  I can't add or remove contacts and it won't let me delete the entire group either.  This was never a problem before and I
can't find squat as to how to fix it.  Please help!  When I try to double click the group in contacts it says  "Cannot open this item" and when i try to delete it says "operation failed".

By "public Exchange based folder" you mean public folder, right?  Do you have rights on that folder?

  • Smart Groups possible in Address Book for PANTHER?

Can you tell me if "SMART GROUPS" is just something in TIGER's version of ADDRESS BOOK or do these exist in PANTHER as well? Actually, I'm not sure what they are, but someone mentioned that I should use them...
    Thanks very much!
    Regards,
    Steve

    Steve,
"Smart Groups" are not available in Panther. This is the Tiger definition of Address Book Smart Groups: Smart Groups are group addresses that Address Book automatically updates with new contacts when they fit the criteria you've specified for that group. For example, if you create a Smart Group for all the members of your swim club by searching for "swim" in the Note field, then every time you add or change a contact and put "swim" in the Note field, that contact is automatically added to your swim club Smart Group.
You can also create a Smart Group by entering a word or phrase in the search field in the upper-right corner of the Address Book window, then choosing "Save Search" from the Action pop-up menu near the upper-left corner of the Address Book window.;~)

  • 10.5.1 update and nested Smart Groups

After installing the 10.5.1 update, it seems that my address book smart groups no longer "nest" properly within regular address book groups.
Example: I have several smart groups built with rules like "email contains company X", these smart groups have all been added to a group called "work". It seems like the "work" group no longer recognizes members of smart group "Company A". For example, an email addressed to "work" does not include any company A members. Also, Mail.app rules based on "sender is a member of group "work".
I've tried rebooting, re-importing my original address book, and deleting existing address book contents and rebuilding groups from scratch.

I am able to launch FCE 3.5.1 on 10.5.1 without issues.
You may want to trash your FCE preferences (~Library/Preference/...), if you haven't already tried that, as they may have been corrupted.

  • Adobe CS5 & Font Book not playing well together

So I've got an Intel Mac Mini that developed this strange little glitch sometime last week. It seems that when I'm using Illustrator or Photoshop and I scroll through my available fonts, ALL 600+ of my fonts are on. When I go to Font Book to troubleshoot the situation, I see that the majority of them aren't activated (which is how it should be). I tried deleting Adobe & Font Book preference files but it didn't remedy the condition. Any one else with a similar problem or a possible solution?
+(I'm guessing this happened after an Apple software update last week; I've had them activate all of my fonts before, but they showed up as activated in Font Book.)+

Peruse Font Management in OS X and if you want to reset the font databases properly, boot into safe mode and then reboot normally. Details in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455 If you're still having issues, contact Adobe and ascertain why their font management's mucked up.

  • Deactivating Font Book

I got so fed up of Font Book I download another Font Management software. What I'd like to know is will Font Book still be running in the background as well as the new font software? One of the reasons why I was using Font Book was to deactivate all my fonts (2,700) so my Mac would run faster. So if it is still running this kind of defeats the object. And it won't let me delete it.

Yes, deleting the Font Book app is all it does. You can easily replicate it by opening Terminal and entering:
    sudo rm -r
Put a space after the -r, then drag and drop Font Book into Terminal. The path and its name will fill in for you the same as above. For this particular Unix command, it doesn't matter if the -r is upper or lower case.
As with deleting any item from the drive, you can't reverse it without returning the item to the drive. So if you think you may ever want to put Font Book back, copy the app to an external drive, first. All other components it relies on will still be on the drive. They'll just all be inert without the main app.
If you're wondering what the command means:
sudo (Super User DO). You're giving yourself temporary root privileges. Necessary in Terminal for this particular removal since your admin account doesn't have great enough permissions to delete the app.
    rm (remove)
-r Since it's an application package, there are more files within what you see as only one item on the desktop. If you didn't include this switch, which tells rm to remove any nested items, the command to delete Font Book would fail since it can't remove the top level item if it doesn't have permission to also remove the nested items.
Or you can skip Terminal entirely and remove Font Book from the desktop. Highlight Font Book and press Command+I, or choose Get Info from the menus (same thing). Click on the lock at the lower right and enter your admin password so you can alter the permissions. Change all of them to Read & Write. Close Get Info. You can now delete Font Book without the OS saying you can't.
