  • Is there an ap for finding/deleting corrupt files on OS X 10.7?

I seem to have a corrupt file(s) which cause my MacBook Pro to freeze inexplicably (and randomly) upon start-up. I've been told that this is a symptom of having a corrupt file.
Is there an an for finding/deleting corrupt files on OS X 10.7?
I'm pretty much bound to my computer and simply don't have the time to go through it manually.
    Thank you.

This is an old post and I am not the person who posted the original query, but I ran your terminal diagnostic and am hoping you are still attending to this forum. I have a mid 2011 macbook Air 11", 256 GB SSD, 1.8 GHz Intel Core i7, 4 GB  1333 MHz DDR3, Mac OS X v. 10.7.5 Lion. I have had various problems in my user homefolder for a while. I have gone through quite a few other troubleshooting and fixing steps, the most extensive following a posting here "Step by Step to fix your mac" by ds store in the Apple forums. These steps helped a lot. I did remove some 3rd party software as part of this process.
My computer is running well in general now, but one thing that has been a recurring problem is problems with move/cut-paste. I researched this online and ACL's being present where they're not supposed to be seems to be an issue. I have used terminal commands to remove ACL's, used Onyx to repair user permissions, rebooted with command-r to reset password screen and reset user permissions. They all help, but then a some point later on the problem recurs. When I run repair disk permissions with either disk utility or onyx I always get this message:
    Repairing permissions for “maggieairHD”
Warning: SUID file “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent” has been modified and will not be repaired.
ACL found but not expected on “Users”
    Repaired “Users”
    Permissions repair complete
This ALWAYS comes up, even if I run it immediately after running it and haven't done anything else on the computer in between.
I created another user and did not have the same problems I was having at the time with some programs, although I haven't used it that much to be able to really compare. The home folder permissions repair in Onyx comes out the same in that user, though.
Here are my results from your diagnostic terminal commands:

    Maggies-MacBook-Air:~ maggieair$
I have removed NoSleep, Caffeine, itunesHelper and Dropbox from login items before and didn't notice any difference, so I put them back. Some of these I know I don't want, like rim/blackberry, adobe AIR. Skype has never worked consistently on this computer. I don't use most of these Services, and I know I had trouble with some that were not compatible with Lion before. I am not using Parallels much now, have been thinking about taking it off as it uses a chunk of my SSD. But I don't feel confident about getting rid of .frameworks etc safely.
I am glad to remove anything I don't use if I know how to do it safely. I am willing to remove anything I do use if it's necessary, but obviously would prefer to find a way to keep things that I find helpful.
    I appreciate any suggestions!

  • Unable to delete a file on application server

    Hello Experts,

OPEN DATASET ld_file FOR INPUT IN TEXT MODE ENCODING DEFAULT message mess.
    IF SY-SUBRC = 0.

         upload = null;
}I am unable to delete the file from the temporary location
    some times it is deleting and some times it is not deleting.. I have also tried ...deleteOnExit();

Make sure you've got no other processes holding onto it (Windows Explorer, for instance) and that you've closed any streams involved with the file. If that fails, try calling System.gc() just before deleting the file. This is a workaround for a bug in certain JVMs on Windows machines

  • Keeps randomly disconnecting, cant be restored, cant delete corrupted files!

Too many problems with my ipod video!!!Its a constant battle to get it working.
Ive tried to restore it but it sais "firmware update failure. Disk write error."
I tried deleteing the corrupt files in my temp music folder but it keeps telling me the directory cannot be deleted because its not empty, and when i delete song in the backup folder individually they just reapear!!
      Windows XP

*so nobody knows how to fix it?*
Yes, we do know but you've taken steps to prevent implementation of the fix. You want your flat tire repaired but you refuse to allow the mechanic to jack up the car.
*apple, im tired of spending countless hours restoring my ipod everytime something goes wrong!*
Hold on, now. You're blaming Apple for having spent "countless hours" restoring the iPod yet you told me that you don't want to do the restore because you deliberately configured iTunes different from Apple's recommendations. Wow, that's heavy. $300 for an iPod but you won't spend $80 to upgrade your computer so that it can support the iPod.

  • Unable to delete a file

I'm unable to delete a a file from the filesystem.
    String fileName = "dummy.xml"
boolean delete = (new File(fileName)).delete();It's not deleting this file from the filesystem.

Can anything else delete that file? Is the fileopen?
I don't know what you mean by can anything else
delete the file.I mean can you delete the file from the command line, a window, whatever. Is it just Java's delete that is having this problem or is it the file system?
No this is not opened/or use.How do you know?
DO I have to specify a path for this. Certainly. How else would Java know which file to delete?
If yes, please read on ........
the path where this xml file resides could by
anywhere in the file system. If it is how do I access
it since there is no specific location (it is left to
the user's choise to save the file anywhere he
    wants)Keep the user's choice.

  • Help needed deleting corrupted file

    G'day,
I have a corrupted file on my hard disk. It is a Vault backup file created by Aperture. Whenever I do anything with the file (e.g., try to unlock it, try to view info, try to open it), the o/s immediately tells me that I have to manually turn off the system (which is what I understand to be a kernel panic).
I have tried to delete the file using the terminal window and by placing the file into a folder and moving the folder to trash. In all cases, I'm told to manually shut down the computer (even when I tried to empty the trash).
It's a 30 gig file, so I'd like to be able to delete it in order to save the hard disk space. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'll reformat the drive if I have to, but I'd prefer to remove just the file.
    Thanks for your help.
    Regards,
    Doug

Sometimes it happens that the Finder just doesn't want to empty the trash anymore and says "The operation cannot be completed because the item "" is in use.". That's a good warning if it is true, but sometimes you want to get rid of an application and this warning appears even though the only thing running is the Finder. Usually after a restart you can delete it. But that is very time consuming and even then, it is sometimes still stuck not wanting to be deleted. There is a risky command that can be used in the Terminal that will empty the trash no matter what. Risky because a simple error in the syntax could erase a lot of stuff that you want to keep.
There is a much easier and quicker way of forcing the Finder to empty the trash no matter what! It is done in the freeware customization and maintenance application OnyX (download @ http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs/english.html ). Once you loaded OnyX and entered your administrator password, choose "Cleaning" in the top bar. Click on the "Trash" tab. You can now choose whether you want to "Delete" or to "Securely Delete" (by overwriting) and click Execute. That's it, it will force the Finder to empty the trash even if the files are in use!
    Also look at these links.

  • I am unable to delete the files

    Hi all,
I am totally new with this iPad stuff, so I hope that someone could help me a bit. I bought the software which is called BUZZ Player (plays videos and subtitles). So, I installed the software and upload a few videos (avi's) and subtitle's (.idx and .sub) via iTunes. Then I start the player and everything worked perfectly except I did not see any subtitles.
Then I decided to remove those files and upload something else. Well, I manage to delete those avi's, but not the subtitles, because BUZZ player does not show them. When I look at the iTunes (My pad -> Apps -> File Sharing -> BUZZ player) those subtitle files are still there, but there's no way to delete them but only upload more stuff.
So, my question is that is there any way to get rid off those files?
Oh, I almost forgot to mention that iPad search can not find them either.
    Thanks in advance!

Hi there eizi, and welcome to apple discussions.
Just click on one of the files in itunes, and press backspace, or delete on your keyboard. You will receive a warning, and then you can delete.
I don't see why apple do not put a delete button on there!
    Hope this helps.

  • Unable to find imported files in music, even though they show up in playlists

I recently tried to import about 400 mp3s into iTunes so I can load them on my iPod.
It went through the process of importing the files, and I didn't see any of the new songs in iTunes.
I tried rebooting my computer, and they were still missing, however after that I plugged the iPod in to charge (which naturally also synced it) and then *ALL* music was gone off of the iPod itself - even my old songs which were already on it.  After another reboot and re-sync, now it's syncing all the music back to the ipod, and interestingly the new 400 songs are in the smart playlists (ones that specify 'media kind is music') however I cannot find them in music to put them in specific manual playlists (or even delete the file out of iTunes).
Can anyone help me find where these files are, or more importantly how to get them out of iTunes since they appear to be causing issues?  I some of them I would like to place in playlists, and some of them I may need to delete in the future.
This was the first time I did 'add folder to iTunes library' instead of 'add file to iTunes library".
I have the most recent update to iTunes (I believe it was just a couple days ago) and an iPod Touch 4th generation with the latest software update on that as well.

interestingly the new 400 songs are in the smart playlists (ones that specify 'media kind is music') however I cannot find them in music
iTunes is designed so that if a song is in a playlist, it must also be in the library.  However, you have encountered the new (and frustrating) bug whereby the "Music" view fails to correctly display new additions.
Some folks report that one or more system restarts clears the problem up.
There is a little more discussion here.

  • How to delete corrupted files backed up on Time Machine.

    Hi,
I'm using Fusion to run Windows XP Home. This morning I tried to open it and was told the file was corrupted and couldn't be used. I had to force quit both Fusion and Windows XP. Luckily I could go back a few days and use TM machine to restore an earlier version of Windows XP and now it's working perfectly again. I'd like to delete the corrupted file but I'm afraid I might delete something critical and I don't to delete all backups. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple boards:
If you did it correctly, the bad file is overwritten by the "new" one from TM.
If not, you should be able to find it and temporarily drag it to your desktop.
If nothing bad happens after a day or so, then trash the desktop windows file.
If you are looking to delete the bad file from TM, open TM and find the bad file and select it. Then select delete You will be prompted to delete only that file or all previous backups. Select only the one you have chosen.
Be sure TM has backed up your new Windows system before deleting it and there is little you can lose.
I would also like to compliment you on using TM and using it properly.
Were everyone as conscientious as you, most of the issues on the board would resolve themselves.
    Kudos.

  • How to delete corrupted files on ipod classic

Somehow the "index" of files on my Ipod Classic HD got corrupted so none of my music, video, etc files showed up on the Ipod.  The library, and all the files, would display in Itunes so I followed the instructions and copied them over to an external HD.  Then, when I synced the Ipod, about 1/3 of my available HD on the Ipod shows up as yellow in the space available indicator.  Fortunately I had enough capacity to re-sync....just with very little free space on the HD afterward
    My question is:
Should I reset the Ipod and then copy the library media folder from the external HD back to my PC?....and then sync?  Will that get rid of the corrupted files so I regain the capacity on the Ipod HD?
    Thanks for any help

    Hi arakis,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
In this situation I would restore your iPod back to factory settings and then sync the music back onto it. It shouldn’t matter if the music is located on the computer hard drive or an external hard drive, as long as the iTunes Media Folder is pointed to the correct location to access the music from iTunes. The first article below explains the process of restoring your iPod back to factory settings and the second article shows the location (and how to change the location) of the iTunes Media Folder.

  • Files In Music player Not Shown In English

I've transferred music files to my 6280 via Nokia Music Manager and when I open them using the music player on my phone, the files are in Japanese not English.
It's quite strange because when I look at the files individually on my phone they show up in English. The only problem I get is when use the music player.
    Can anybody help me???

I'm having kinda the same problem when i transfer music through the nokia software all the files work and they show the correct names in the memory card but when played through the music player the names turn into little rectangles, not even symbols
    Can anyone provide a suggestion?

  • Itunes unable to locate original file for music after update. How can I find it

I am not able to play any of my music since the last update to itnes. It gives me a message that the original file canot be located but when I say locate it comes back with nothing. Any suggestions?

This happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

  • Unable to delete Acrobat files from PC

This is a new problem. The Acrobat files cannot be deleted from the Acrobat program, my documents or my downloads files. A popup keeps telling me the files are 'in use' even though no other programs are open. And yes, I've rebooted several times and logged in and out of Adobe CC a few times just to make sure.
How do I get rid of the *(&&^% files?

Are these on a network and somehow accessed by other people?
Are you on a Windows PC and have adminstrator privileges? Because you just might be unable to delete those because the rights have been set somehow. Check the file properties if you have sufficient rights on those files.
Are there PDF related background tasks and services running which might lock the files?
