Unable to delete some files or empty them from Trash

Hi, I receive the following message when trying to empty files from the Trash:
"The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "lg550-1.gif" could not be read or written.
(error code -36)"
There are hundreds of these .gif files in an images folder which I would like to delete by emptying the trash. Finder is asking whether I would like to continue or stop emptying the trash...I'm wondering if there is a way to eliminate this images folder manually from the command line?
(I just don't have the time to constantly click upon "continue" and I think these files will still be in the Trash in any case, with the basic problem unsolved so long as they are not permanently deleted.)
Thanks

  • Unable to delete some files

I have some audio files that appear only in smart lists and not in the library. You can't delete a file from a smart list view (correct me if I'm wrong) so you have to find it in the library to delete it.
It doesn't appear in the library - so I cannot delete these files.
I'm not sure how this happened but I have a theory. These all appear to be podcasts. Some are from audible but not all are. I think I may have deleted, or unsubscribed from the podcast in the podcast view but I didn't remove the files first. So it looks like the files are still around but since they are podcasts they don't appear in the library, and since the I'm not subscribed to the podcast they aren't in the podcast list either.
Is there a way to get rid of these files? I thought of resubscribing to the podcasts but a lot of these I don't even remember what the podcast was.

  • How do I retrieve my deleted Pages files or get them from iCloud on iPad2

    Hi,
This is actually two questions but they are kinda related.
I have an iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.1
Pages deleted all my documents when I opened it and it told me there was an update. I clicked the update button, but when I saw the update was 250 MB I thought I would wait to update. I returned to Pages and all my documents were gone.
How do I get them back?
If I go to the settings I can see several of my Pages documents (maybe all of them) are stored in my iCloud. That's great, but how do I get them back on my iPad 2 in my Pages App?
    All the Best
    Jost - Denmark

If you started the update, you may have rendered the app useless until you finish the update. That's simply a guess o n my part, though. Are you able launch the app? If so, can you create a new document?
Something else to consider ....I  have deleted the Pages app from my iPad several times in the past for troubleshooting purposes. When I deleted the app, the documents were also deleted from the device, but they still remained in iCloud as they should. When I reinstalled the app, all of my Page documents downloaded from iCloud onto my iPad again, which is the normal and expected behavior. If your files are still in iCloud, that might be worth a try.

  • Okay so I set up my Time Capsule already and is now backing up 2 of my iMacs. Works great. What I want to know is how to use the TC to directly store files? I want to do this to delete some files but still have them on the TC for future reference..

Okay so I set up my Time Capsule already and is now backing up 2 of my iMacs. Works great. What I want to know is how to use the TC to directly store files? I want to do this to delete some files on iMac 20inch but still have them on the TC for future reference..eg some movies on iTunes. I want to directly save them on the drive so I can delete them from iTunes and gain some storage. (Ps on iMac 20 inch (it's almost full - 320 GB) when I enter time machine, a tab comes up on finder which reads "Time Machine backups" it's able to be ejected like a disc or a connected device. On the iMac 20 inch, I dragged some files onto there as if using it like a hard drive. Is this the correct method? Then I went to my 27inch iMac and saw the "Time Machine Backups" hoping to see the files I dragged from the 20inch iMac. But the files were not there except a folder that said "Backups.backupdb". Can someone help me?

It's not a good idea to use a network disk for both Time Machine backups and other things.  By design Time Machine will eventually consume all the space on its output disk, which will then cause problem for your other files.  I'd store those other files on an external disk connected to the Time Capsule.  The problem with that is that Time Machine will only back up files that are local to your Mac.  That means that you'll only have one copy of the files on or attached to your Time Capsule.
By the way, you've been misled by poor field labeling on this forum into typing a large part of your message into the field intended for the subject.  In the future just type a short summary of your post into that field and type the whole message into the field below that.

         upload = null;
}I am unable to delete the file from the temporary location
    some times it is deleting and some times it is not deleting.. I have also tried ...deleteOnExit();

Make sure you've got no other processes holding onto it (Windows Explorer, for instance) and that you've closed any streams involved with the file. If that fails, try calling System.gc() just before deleting the file. This is a workaround for a bug in certain JVMs on Windows machines

  • When i scyn photo from pc to iphone, by using cable and selecting iphone on ituens, the photo which stored in my ipone, i am unable to delete some photoand even can not arrange them according to my wish

when I scyn photo from pc to iphone , by using cable and selecting iphone on itunes, the photo which stored in my iphone , i am unable to delete some photo from them and even can not arrange them accoring to my wish, please let me know what to do ?

you can only delete the photos you take on the phone itself as in from camera roll
sync mean syncronize as in make the 2 side the same if you could delete the photos syncronized to your iphone then the nature of what syncronize mean result in the logic step being deleting the photo on your computer too
you get rid of the photo by sync with another dir/ sourse or by moving the photo out of the dir of the computer and then resync

How much free space do you actually have? Go to the Apple menu and select About This Mac... More Info... and click on the Storage tab. You should see something like this...
This will show you how much free space you have and what's taking up all the space on your hard drive. You may need to backup and trash some seldom used files, applications, etc. You have to drag them into the Trash and empty the trash to regain the space. A general rule of thumb is that you should have about 15% of your hard drive storage free.
    Good luck,

  • I am having problems gettting my mail to work ... Mac telling me that my start up disk id full and to delete some files to free up space ... have done this but when i open mail from the dock it just brings up the colour wheel and nothing happening

I am having problems gettting my mail to work ... Mac telling me that my start up disk id full and to delete some files to free up space ... have done this but when i open mail from the dock it just brings up the colour wheel and nothing happening ... it shows when you right click on the mail icon that " application not responding"

If your hard drive is getting full, you need to free up, at least, 20 GBs of space on your iMac's hard drive.
If your Mac is running a fairly recent version of OS X, here are some general guidelines.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Other things you can do to gain space.
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it run the automatic ans S.M,A.R.T. tests,  then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the tabs that have the ability to clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

  • Drive no longer being used by time machine: delete some files?

Tried unlocking and allowing myself to read and write.  Nope.  Tried holding down the option key.  Nope.
This drive is no longer being used by time machine and I want to delete some files on it.
Is there a way to do it without wiping the entire drive?

    nowsthetime wrote:
It wasnt a dedicated backup and  there's other material on it that I need to keep.
That's a problem (as you've discovered).  Time Machine works best if it has it's own, exclusive partition.   See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #3 for details.
Aha!  Just found THIS. I'll post if it works. http://www.celiamania.com/wordpress/?p=1038
That will let you delete individual backups, or all backups of selected items.
If you don't have room to copy the "other" stuff elsewhere while you erase the disk, you can delete the Backups.backupdb folder.  Emptying the trash will take a very long time, and may give you permissions and/or locked file problems.  If so, see #E6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • My startup disk is full:  how do I clean it up?  Simply deleting some files does not help.

I get the message that my startup disk is full. It says to delete some files to make more space; but after deleting some files, this message will reappear again after a while.  What else can be done?

I hope you haven't removed anything that involves the system.
I hope you haven't remove things willy nilly, either.
Here are some general tips to keep your Mac's hard drive trim and slim as possible
You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your Mac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your other Mailboxes and other Mail categories to see If there is other mail you can archive and/or delete.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
To find other large files, download an app called Omni Disk Sweeper.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.

  • Deleted some files in finder - how do I clean up in Aperture?

I have deleted some files and folders in Finder and am wondering if there is a way to clean up in Aperture tooo????

This is true and was the first I thought of as well, but I would hesitate to recommend it in this particular case since the filtering also will show all files that are offline by other reasons (i.e. moved folder or images). Also, the folders he have deleted (showing up as projects or albums in Aperture) will not be deleted in the library so one have to go through all these anyway to find out where the empty ones are.
Hopefully there will not be a huge amount of images that were deleted so by looking into the different projects will give more control regarding what you are deleting from Aperture's library. Any file or project that are missing by other reasons would easily be recognized and could then be relocated first.
    Regards

i received the following message while i was on my macbook air "you do not have enough space in your start up disk - you must delete some files"-restarted; only got startup noise then blank screen. i waited for a few minutes to see if it would load - nothing just the lit up screen but nothing loaded - held power button it asked did i really want to turn off - i selected shutdown -turned off and left it off for awhile tried to turn on no noise no screen load. the same lit up screen but nothing loading.  please help thx in advance if anyone can offer some suggestions

You can get there from here (booting normally); it just may take you a few steps to do it.
If the disk is almost full and the system won't boot then sometimes it will boot in Safe Mode.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564?viewlocale=en_US
Empty the trash after it boots.
Then for hints on how to free disk/SSD storage see https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5872318?tstart=0
If the Safe Mode boot does not do the trick then you can install OS X on an external hard disk, boot from that, and then delete files.  You can also reach the disk via Target Mode.  A third option is to take it to an Apple store where they can do a network boot and help you remove some files.

  • 9300i Memory Full - Delete some files - Memory Ful...

I had trouble with my 9300i, it started saying "Memory Full" and told me to delete some files. The problem was, I tried to delete files, but the phone couldn't do it, because the memory was full... I couldn't do anything.
The Control panel's "Memory" said I had 500 Kb of messages, 500 Kb of calendar, and 79 megabytes of "Other file types".
The File manager did not show me anything other than "My own files" and the folders were empty.
I couldn't find any help from Nokia sites. A friend adviced me to make a Full backup on a MMC card, transfer it to PC and delete a certain file: Mail/index. That's what I did, then I resetted the phone to factory settings and transferred the Full backup back to phone.
This helped and my phone was once again operational. However, all my messages were gone, and I had to save the email settings from scratch, so beware, if you need to do the same.
So how can the memory fill 100% if I use the "Delete sent messages after X days" and keep deleting the new ones?! What is this "index", and why is there no clever way to make it smaller...

For next time, look in your E-Mail inbox and Sent items; mine was full of picture attachments - cleared down a few MB just in there.

If you are using Apple's Mail app 6.5 is the latest version irrespective of what a previous poster says. It does sound though that you are using a gmail account online via a web browser. Please confirm and fill in missing information.
