Unable to deselect layer in Motion tutorial

First off, let me say that I am BEYOND stoked to finally purchase Motion. I've barely got it out of the box and I already can do more graphic stuff than I have been able to do before. I also purchase Mark Spencer's Apple Pro Training series: Motion 4 and am trying to complete lesson 1. However, I am stuck. In the part of the lesson where you copy the video of the surfer, and make one layer 127% and the next layer 100% and you are supposed to deselect the layer of the 100% so you can work on the background, when I click on the square to deselect, it will not let me. I have the correct project tab open and I can see the three layers (the project and the 2 video layers), but when I click on the square, nothing happens. I tried for over an hour last night to no avail. I know I am missing something simple, but cannot figure out what it is. I have done work in Photoshop, so I am familiar with layers.

If by chance you OPT-clicked any layer, that would have "soloed" the layer. The only way to un-solo a layer is to OPT-click the same layer again. During the time when a layer is soloed, you will not be able to activate or deactivate any other layer.
You can tell if a layer is soloed because one layer will be blue and active, and all the others will look ghost-like (faded blue color).

you say:- You need to keep the photos on the computer, since the ones that are synced to the iPhone are of reduced resolution and cannot be moved anywhere else. You can always remove the other folder if you do not want it.
BUT I DONT HAVE THE PHOTOS ON MY DEVICE(MY PC) I DELETED THEM.
further i tried this:-If you do not have another folder of photos that you can sync, then create an empty folder on the computer and sync that folder. That will delete the photos from the iPhone, then you can go back to iTunes, remove the checkmark by the empty folder and sync again, removing that folder from the iPhone.
Trying this it just removed the checkmark nothing else it did
i think i have no other option rather than to keep those synced photos on my device>

Effect or script to smoothly center a layer after motion stabilization

Suppose I've used the motion tracker to perfectly stabilize a feature of interest. As a result, the feature is dead still within the frame. What I'm trying to achieve is to stabilize the jerky motion but preserve the overall motion of the feature around the frame.
For example, suppose that at the start of the footage, the feature is in the left half of the frame, then moves to the right, and then to the top. After stabilization, the feature is stationary while the layer is shifted to the right, then to the left, then to the bottom to compensate. What I'd like to see instead is that it stays generally in the left half, then generally in the right, then at the top, like it did initially, only with sudden jerks smoothed out.
To do what I want, I'm now thinking of having the (stabilized) layer get gently "pulled" towards the center of the frame, so that sudden shifts due to the stabilization are still there, but overall the layer returns to the center eventually.
Another way of looking at this is that I'd like to apply a high-pass filter to the tracked path, removing low-frequency motion from the path.
Does anyone know of a ready-made effect or script to achieve this?

You're overthinking this. Retaining smooth motion while remove jerky motion is built into the Warp Stabilizer effect. You don't need to run a script afterward or anything. I show how to remove jerks while retainng a camera pan in this video:

Activating 3d for a layer effects motion blur strangely

Hello all
I have a comp in which a jpg logo moves quickly across frame into position, I have motion blur enabled for the composition and the layer and it works fine. I would now like to do more work on the composition that involves camera moves so I have enabled 3d for the layer containing the logo and my motion blur, well, doesn't dissapear exactly but neither does it stay.

ok half fixed it myself, I discovered the "samples per frame" setting in advanced composition settings
if I set this at 35-40 I get a nice smooth blur.
I have a smaller problem now however ,the 3d version is brighter than the 2d version, I assume this is because of the composite mode it uses to merge the 40 or so frames to make the blur. Is there any way of controlling this accurately?
Also does anyone know why motion blur sample rate is automatic in 2d and not 3d?

Effect Controls motion - tutorial?

Can anyone point me in the direction of a good tutorial? I need to learn more about fine control of motion under "Effect Controls". 'Ease in' and 'Ease out' are not enough. For example; if zooming out from the centre of a still picture, until the picture fits the screen or further, the zoom increases in speed as it pulls away from the centre of the picture until by the time it reaches screen-fit or beyond it's racing. How can I programme a start-to-finish even speed throughout such a zoom?

Twirl down the Scale property to expose the graph editor. Change the
keyframe type to Bezier. Adjust the KF handles to create a graph curve
that changes faster at the beginning and slower at the end of the zoom.
FWIW, until you adjust the KF handles, the zoom is proceeding at a
(mathematically) constant speed. The problem is that the constant speed
produces the illusion of going faster at the end.

Help with linking a layer to motion tracked video

Not sure of the best way to describe this. I have a video with shadow in it which only moves slightly when camera pans a little.
Ive created a static image and removed the shadow in photoshop although could have probably done that using the clone stamp in AE.
However, the problem I have is that when the photoshop image is imported and I create the mask around the image where my shadow is on the video, the image is not tracked or linked to the video... How do I link it to the motion tracked video so that it moves with the video ?

Yeah one below.. What you will see is the photoshop file, then the null layer followed by the original footage. In effect I need the photoshop image to track the movement of the camera as when I currently play the video, when the camera moves it looks as though a chunk of grass (the mask) is moving different from the rest of the scene.

Unable to select Layer.

I'm making a typography movie. I'm now at the part that I'm making a composition of every 5 layers. But after a few times I get stuck. Because as soon as I select a layer I select the last composition that I made. This is freaking me out because I always get the error when I'm far in. Losing hours of work.

Sorry if Im being vague I shall try to make my question more clear.
I'm working on a project where in I need to create a Typography. A animated movie that uses lots of words. I started out in Adobe Illistrator, where every single word has his own layer. After I was done in Illustrator I imported my file into After Effects. There I took 5 words and made a single composition. It worked great for the first 20 compositions but then the problem started to arise. Everytime I click on the next word it highlights the whole file and I'm unable to continue.
Example: Lets say the last word I compositioned is ''best" and the next word I want to composition is ''the''. It will target the composition of ''best''.
The reason I lost hours of my time is because the only way to make something clickable is by starting all over again till I'm 20 composition in or so and then the problem arises again. 20 compositions is a rough estimated it could also happen at the very first composition.
I hope that I formulated my answer better.

Keying with Motion tutorial?

Can someone recommend one that deals with moving subjects such as dancers against a green screen - and all the problems involved? Will be shooting in 4:2:2 color space 1920x1080 24p.
I'm torn between trying to use Motion, buying Shake, or a 3rd party solution like dvMatte Pro. I'd of course prefer to use tools already included with FCS2.

The Motion Tutorial

Hi,
New user to Motion and love it. I'm doing the tutorial that comes with the program and I am stuck on page 86. At the bottom it goes over "applying a throw behavior to the remaining shapes. The first step, it reads, "is to click between the thumbnail and the shape icon/name of upper blue box, and drag downward to the lower blue box.
The three shapes are now selected."
I do this and all it does it take the upper blue box down the stack under the lower blue box.
Can anyone enlighten me as to a step that may be missing from the tutorial or perhaps I don't have a proper window pane open?

Yip, as mark says, Dragging doesn't do what the author intended in this case, I too fell into that trap recently when doing the same tutorial.

Camera moves on still - Motion tutorial?

Motion.
I'm looking for a tutorial ... ? I do have the Motion collection of Tutorials – they seem to get into multi-layering and brute moves, but don't get into the detail of managing the keyframes in terms of controlling the dynamics of the moves.
I'm wanting to do extensive moves on stills. I don't want to 3D the still. I want to stay IN the frame of the image. But I want to be able to move to an object, pause, move to another, move in, move out ... all very smoothly.
I'm struggling with handling the keyframes, being able to control my speed from point to point, and making the slowdowns and speedups glass smooth.
I'm trying to figure the best way to handle this with the most efficiency. Just setting keyframes? Or using the camera?
Any suggestions would be most appreciated,

Maybe they realised how popular it was and decided to put it back on the shelf for sale. Wouldn't fault them for that.
I have to say, after years of grinding my teeth, and using it on scores of films, I still don't get the FCP keyframing. Incomprehensible to me. I can move stuff around easily enough, it's controlling the acceleration and deceleration that I've never managed to get working.
Thanks for that Shane. If I find something I'll report back here. Or maybe I'll just bite the bullet and work on it myself.
I've figured it out a number of times in the past -- but months, years, go by and I don't use Motion. Not like riding a bicycle.

Unable to rename layer in Flash CS4

I have three different machines, all XP Pro, with all the latest service packs and updates (windows and adobe). When trying to rename a layer in the timeline, if I double click the layer name the name changes to edit mode for a fraction of a second and then switches back to non-editable. I can rename the layers through the properties but I'd like to solve this issue.
Any suggestions?

This will happen when the Behaviors and Actions panel are open at the same time, or have been open at the same time in the current workspace or a workspace that the current one is based off of.
Make sure both of those panels are closed, then open a default workspace and create a new workspace based off of that without opening those two panels at the same time.

Please help! How do I unlink a mask from a layer in Motion?

How do I "unlink" a mask from a layer so when the object on the layer moves, the mask stays still?
(Similar to how you unlink a mask in Photoshop by clicking on the link icon beside the layer thumbnail)ghgh
This is propably very simple, but I can´t figure this out or find it anywhere searching on the net or in the manual (already wasted almost two hours on this and my deadline is coming uncomfortably close...)

Would moving the mask to the Group containing the layer you want to animate give you the result you're looking for?
Your layers list would look like this:
If there are other layers in the group, then you would need to nest the masked group so as to not affect the other layers.
You could also add a shape and use that as an image mask which includes a stencil option.
Draw your shape
Select the image you want to mask
Add Image Mask (shift+command+m) via the object menu
Drag your shape to the image mask
Your layer list would look like this:

I have seen that adobe aggresively marketing their HTTP Live Dyanmic MBR Streaming with very nice tutorials like one given on this page. I'm looking for a similar tutorial for Live RTMP Dyanmic Streaming from Adobe? Can anyone guide me of such a well descriptive tutorial in Adobe Documentation ? Please Help.

MapViewer Editor - Unable to Edit Layer

I am using MapViewer 11.1.1.7.x and in Editor I am able to bring a layer into the work area. However whenever I click the options Layer is Editable or Selection Occurs on this Layer my data layer disappears.
the data layer is from an imported shapefile of US States that i got from US Census website.
Any ideas where I can look to get this feature to work?
