The thing in your download folder is a "disk image." You have to double-click it and it will place a white "disk" on your desktop. It should also open a window with a Firefox icon and your applications folder. Then you can drag it to the applications folder. When you are done drag that disk to the trash. I would love to know how to consolidate all my music and be able to play it without one device saying they are unavailable yet another device says they are?
Also how obsurd is it for Apple to charge for supporting their devices! Or is that just me?

Unable to complete step 2 (drag icon into applications folder) when upgrading Firefox

I am trying to upgrade from Firefox 3.6.11 to 3.6.12.
Step 2 of the process says "Drag the Firefox icon into your applications icon.
First problem: I don't have an applications icon. Second problem, being creative I open Finder on my Mac and try to drag the Firefox icon into the applications folder. Won't work. Still shows I have Firefox 3.6.11 So I can't get beyond Step 2.
A second problem is that the download screen with the three steps continually fills the screen. So there is nowhere to show an Applications icon to drag the Firefox icon into. Every time I click on the Step 2 icon, the screen maximizes and covers anything underneath it.
Any suggestions?

How do I get the prompt in "Step 2" of the download process to provide the icon I need to drag to my applications folder?

The problem with the help page is that it starts after the browser is downloaded which is great, but I generally have very few questions about the browser once it is downloaded, it is getting it downloaded that generally provides the most difficulty.
The last time I tried to download a Firefox upgrade 3.4 to 3.6, I think. I had a different but similar problem. Then I would click on the download button and nothing would happen, this went on for several months. But I hung in there and dutifully clicked the download button again and again for about 6 months and one day, I won the download lottery for that day and the damn ting downloaded.
Now I am trying to download the beta verson 4. As a result I guess of my past determination I am now getting hung up at Step 2. It appears to download, by that I mean the little window (excuse my nomenclature I'd completely computer illiterate which doesn't help) with the blue download line and the timer numbers runs across the top of the download window. But then nothing else happens. It never goes to step 2 which is dragging the icon to my applications folder. What is the magic formula this time? Or am I destined to just continue to attempt the download again until the computer gods finally decide I am worthy to receive version 4?
I have already tried three different times. Still nothing. I have a 1.5 GHz PowerbookPC G4 with Mac OS X Version 10.5.8 and 1.5 GB DDR SDRAM

Unable to delete program in application folder

hi,
i installed mgmaps a while ago and the old version works perfectly well on my nokia navigator 6110. then i try to 'update' mgmaps and it gives an error message. i then decided to uninstall mgmaps. it says uninstallation was successful. however, the mgmaps icon in my application folder STILL exist. whenever i choose remove, nothing happen. any idea how to delete this? at the same time, i was unable to install any version of mgmaps for my nokia 6110 navigator (error message will come out). it would be nice if someone can help me with this. i try to avoid the hard reset.

Can't drag Firefox into applications folder: "libsmime3.dylib is in use".

I search for libsmime3.dylib but can't find it on the computer. The computer is a MacBook Pro running OS 10.6.7. I've quit the old Firefox.

OK I looked at an old Apple forum and someone suggested Trash then Restart then Empty Trash, and it worked. Cisco is gone, Opt is gone, and I was able to load FireFox. I had to give admin passwords to do this too. Why an old weird game or library folder could cause such obstacles is a wonder. But I'd rather wonder about other things...

Software downloads mount drive but do not show icons to drag into applications folder

I downloaded Flash this weekend and Logos 5 today. Both downloaded and the drives mounted, but the drives did not show the software package to be dragged into my application folder. In the case of Flash, the folder header was there, but the space below, where the Flash app was supposed to be was blank. In the case of Logos, when I opened the drive, the only thing visible was the arrow between the app and the shortcut to the applications folder. There was nothing to grab and drag either. Any ideas for me?

3rd party software uses all kinds of different ways to get installed.
Some provide installers you double click on inside the mounted .dmg. And to keep things interesting, different vendors use different installer utilities
Some include an Alias pointing at the Applications folder.
Some just give you the App and you figure out what to do with it (if you are lucky, these sometimes include a README file that tells you want you should do).
This is life outside the Mac App Store.

Applications folder - ACLs problem

I had a problem with my Account shortname being misspelled. So I Google for the solution and managed to change it. However the problem now is that anytime I need to update an application in the Applications folder (say Skype e.g. or anything else), upon dragging it I get an error message about not having enough privileges to perform that operation.
So as a work-around, I have been deleting the app I need to update prior to dragging the new build into the Applications folder.
However, I still would like to find a solution.

run the following commands in terminal (copy and paste please):
sudo chown -R root:admin /Applications
you'll have to enter your admin password (which you won't see). that's normal.
this might be enough. if not run the following commands also
sudo chmod -R gwr,X /Applications

I have used Firefox for years on my Mac laptop for years, I tried to update to version 4 and now I have no Firefox and every time I download the the Firefox the emblem has a awhite circle with a cross through it, so I can't drag it to applications.

The support page is ridiculous, it assumes you already have Firefox and that the install went fine. I am having trouble with an update to Version 4. I have an ibook G4 running OS X. I have used Firefox for years. When I downloaded the update, the Firefox logo thing that you are supposed to drag to the Applications folder has a white circle with a line through it. I have rebooted many times and have updated all other software.

I wouldn't trust any Firefox "update" from a non-Mozilla website. Sometimes, unofficial builds contain adware or malware. If you want to use Firefox for AOL do so at your own risk.
