Unable to edit files in Sharepoint

Hi,
When I try to edit a file, I get a pop up asking me to open the file, which I accept, then Excel, or Word, asks for my login. Then I get "Sorry we couldn't open XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.XXX"
Clicking OK presents:
"Microsoft Excel cannot access the file 'XXXXXXXXXXXXXX.XXX'. There are several possible reasons:
* File name or path does not exist
* The file is being used by another program
* The workbook you are trying to save has the same name as a currently open workbook"
This used to work fine, but upon returning from the Christmas break, this is the error.
Ticking the file in sharepoint, then clicking files and download copy works and is prompted for a file download to start.
Similarly if I go to Open in Explorer under Library, it opens an explorer window with the files. Double clicking them yields the same error as above.
If I go to Excel, Open, Other Web Locations, then I have recent folders showing my sharepoint details, clicking into this shows the files and allows me to edit, save etc.
Does anyone have any idea what's wrong?
Many thanks :)
Jon

I agree with Andrew.  You may also want to add the Checked Out too Column to your views.
Please also be aware that if the file has been opened bt someone that's then wondered off for Christmas and left it open, there may also be a lock on a network level applied to the file, rather than this being applied on a SharePoint web app level.

  • Unable to edit document from SharePoint 2007 using Office 2013 and IE 11

I am getting the following error when I try to edit a document from SharePoint 2007: "Edit document
requires a Windows Sharepoint services-compatible application and Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or greater". I am using Windows 7 with Office 2013 and Internet Explorer 11. Troubleshooting steps that I've tried so far (that haven't worked) are as follows:
    1) repaired Office; 2) switched from 64 bit version of IE to 32 bit version; 3) moved the owssupp.dll from C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\ to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15; 4) tried removing old versions of Office (but
I still need to use Office Communicator 2007 r2 and couldn't figure out how to get rid of the Office14 files from Program Files); and 5) running SharePoint in IE compatibility mode. Please advise...thanks!

    Hi,
It seems you installed mixed version Office2007/2010/2013 on your client machine?
I would suggest you remove all Office 2007 and 2010 version, and reinstall Office 2013(include Office Tools->Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Support component) on your machine, and make sure "Open SharePointDocuments class" add-on is enabled
from IE11, then check if it could fix the issue.
If above works, please test again after installing the Office Communicator 2007 r2 on your machine.

  • Unable to edit documents in Sharepoint 2013

    Hi,
unable to edit documents in SP2013.while editing getting the following error. Please guide me on this.
    Thanks In advance

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that only
one user could not edit documents in SP2013 with OWA.
You can use compatibility mode to check whether it works.
    Open IE->Tools->Compatibility View Settings
You can also add the site into Trusted sites.
    Open the
IE->Internet Options->Security->Sites->add the site into the Websites, then check whether it works.
What's more, you can also use other browsers to check whether it works, such as Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer 10.
Check whether the user has permission to the documents.

  • Unable to edit file properties in Search results

When I access a folder normally, I'm able to update a file properties but if try the same from the search results the dialog is read-only.  I also can't open the properties dialog from Windows Photo Viewer, if the picture was opened from the search

An example of the issue is if I search for pictures with a rating i.e.

I can't change the rating of an incorrectly marked jpg without going to it's folder and right clicking on the file directly.
I've tried rebuilding the search index but this hasn't fixed the issue.

  • Unable to edit file after saving with add-in

I'm only just starting to test the Vibe add-in. Looks good so far, but I've noticed one fairly important issue.
If I start with a new file and save it for the first time, all is well from within MS-Word. I can save, continue editing, and save again. However, if I then login to the Vibe site I can't actually edit the file, at least not immediately, nor can any members of my team. As of now, the two test files I've created cannot be edited on the Vibe site.
Of course, I realize that the add-in is beta, but I just thought I would bring this up. I'm also wondering if anyone else has observed the same behaviour. Thanks.

This is the vibe file edit applet, right?. Not sure this has to do with desktop. Seems to be you are having problems with the editor on linux and mac. Can you upload a file without using desktop and test editing that? I think maybe you are having some of the problems described in the readme with the vibe edit applet.
What are you expecting to happen when you click on edit in linux?
    6.7 Restrictions on Applet Support
Applets are not supported on 64-bit Firefox on a system with a Java Runtime Environment (JRE) earlier than 1.6.0_12.
On a 64-bit operating system, updating to JRE 1.6.0.12 or later enables the applets to work.
For example, multi-file drag-and-drop from the desktop, file paste from the desktop, Edit in Place, and the graphical display in the workflow editor do not work where applets are not supported.
6.8 Edit in Place Support for Mac Users
For Mac users, Vibe looks for OpenOffice.org in the following directory on users Mac workstations:
    /Applications/OpenOffice.org.app
If your organizations standard location for OpenOffice.org is in a different location on users workstations, you can reconfigure Vibe to look for OpenOffice.org in your preferred location.
    1.
    Change to the following directory:
    Linux:
    /opt/novell/teaming/apache-tomcat-version/
    webapps/ssf/WEB-INF/classes/config
    Windows:
    c:\Program Files\Novell\Teaming\apache-tomcat-version\
    webapps\ssf\WEB-INF\classes\config
    2.
Open the ssf.properties file in a text editor.
    3.
Locate the block of lines that start with:
    edit.in.place.mac.editor
    4.
Copy that set of lines to the clipboard of your text editor.
    5.
Open the ssf-ext.properties file, which is located in the same directory as the ssf.properties file.
    6.
Paste the block of lines you copied at the end of the ssf-ext.properties file.
    7.
Edit the location of the OpenOffice.org software to reflect its location in your organization.
    8.
Save and close the ssf-ext.properties file.
    9.
Close the ssf.properties file without saving it.
    10.
Stop and restart Vibe to put the new software location into effect on your Vibe site.

  • Unable to edit XLSM files in SharePoint using hyperlink?

Unable to edit .xlsm files using hyperlink, please guide me.
    Thanks
    Ramanjulu Naidu N

    Hi Ramanjulu,
Did this happen to all users?
Did the "Read Only/Edit" dialog pop up when you click the .xlsm Name link from SharePoint 2010?
Could you see the yellow message bar with "Edit Workbook" button when you open the .xlsm file in your Excel Application?
You can check if the following kb article could solve yellow message bar missing problem, set "Browser File Handling" as Permissive for your web application, or update the registry for client Office application.
Also check if the add-on "SharePoint OpenDocuments Class" is enabled in your IE 32-bit browser.

  • Editing powerpoint files in sharepoint

    Hi,
One of my clients is having issues editing powerpoint files in sharepoint 2013 (Office 365 hosted).
He gets the following error when clicks edit and then clicks check out.
"We're having trouble connecting to the server. If this keeps happening, contact your help desk."
I have managed to work a fix for him by getting him to click the ... to the right of the document and then clicking check out and then opening the file again to edit it. However this is a sudden change to his process and an extra few steps he does not want
    to keep having to do.
He is currently not the only user in the organisation to having this problem either.
I have tried trawling through many instances of people having this error but it mainly seems to be in the links to the files which does not seem to be the case here as I have checked that problem. There must be some other underlying issue that due to my
lack of experience with SharePoint 2013 (Office 365 hosted) I just am unable to discover.
Thanks in advance for all help and advice it will be much appreciated!

  • Unable to edit html file

    Hi,
I downloaded an html file from our server to edit the logo. However, I am unable to edit the logo part. It's like commented out. And once I opened the file on Dreamweaver CS5, I am getting this pop-up message:
"This page contains some SWF objects that may not work properly in the most recent versions of Internet Explorer. Dreamweaver cannot convert them to the new SWF markups. Please delete each of them and insert again."
I can't edit the html file and change the logo. Please help.
    Thank you and God bless!
    Dannie

    Dannie,
Are you familiar with dreamweaver templates and editable regions? If the logo is in the template, then you need to modify the template file. The changes you make to the template will automatically be propogated to all of the files which use the template.  If your html file uses a template, the html code will look like its commented out.
Also, you should not have to download the html fiile from your server because you should always keep a copy of all the html files on your computer.
I don't know about the SWF error.
    Good luck.

  • Unable to edit Hosts file in Win7 Home Prem 64bit.

Clean install.  Administrator account.  Unable to edit the permissions of the hosts file. There is one in the drivers\etc file, which I cannot edit. There is supposed to be one in %systemroot% \SysWOW64\drivers\etc   but there is no etc folder in the drivers folder.
Turned off DNS Server. gpedit.msc not found when calling it in "run".  This is the first time I've used 64bit anything, so a bit of a newb in that respect.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
As you would know, some of the Windows 7 users can’t save the host file how they like it. The host file itself will simply vanish what the user had done with it.
In my scenario, I was unable to fix this even after all the instructions provided in above posts. Hence, I have come up with my own idea and luckily it
    worked.<o:p></o:p>
For those users who experience this problem, here are the instructions to fix it.
First of all, you should have the administrative privileges to edit the host file. In normal case, if an admin user directly go to the host file in system 32 and add his preferences
and then save it, it should keep the changes. However, in some wicked scenarios, it will not. I had done a detailed research on this through all the available online forums and even contacted Microsoft several times with no luck.
So, here you go with a correct solution for this problem.
Note: If you are not comfortable with Windows OS and don’t know what you are doing, this process can mess up things.
Hence, do not attempt if you are not 100% sure you can make it.
    Login to an administrator account.
In the run command (Windows key + R) type, “control folders” and hit enter.
Click on the tab called view.
Select the radio button for Show hidden files, folders and drivers –ON.
Uncheck the ‘Hide extension for known file types-ON
Click on Apply and then OK.
Type “drivers” in run command and hit enter. It will take you to where the folder “drivers” located in System 32.
From the “drivers” folder, double click the folder named “etc.”
Now you can see the “host” file along with others.
Now, in the search area in start menu, type “notepad.exe” and open the notepad.exe as administrator. (In order to do this, you can right click on the notepad.exe shown and select
“Run as Administrator.” If UAC prompted, click YES/OK)
Now, you will have a notepad open with administrative privileges.
At the top left side of the notepad click on “file” and then select “Open.”
A box will appear which will allow you select the file to open. Carefully, navigate to the location where the “host” file is located. To do that, select the drive where you
installed Windows. If you have the Windows installed in C: select ‘Local Disk (C :)’ > Windows > System 32 > drivers > etc. At this point, you might not have another option to proceed or select from. The window would be empty. To proceed further,
select the option “All files” from the drop down menu which is located above the “Open” and “Cancel” button. You can now see all the files located in etc folder.
Select “hosts” from the menu and click on “Open.” Note: You can either click on open or double click on the file.
Now, you will have the host file information open in the notepad which you had already initiated before with administrative privileges.
Make whatever changes you as you wish. (Example: If you need to block a web site called
    www.block123.com you can type 127.0.0.1
www.block123.com right under the local hosts.
Make sure you do not change any other letters or characters which are already saved in host file.
This will completely mess up your computer. For more information on the information about host file, refer the Microsoft web site:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972034 . If you
have accidently delete/edit anything from host file, please delete the complete information stored in host file and copy and paste the host file information from Microsoft which is appropriate for your Operating System.)
Click on “file” again and select “Save as” and save it in etc. If the path is showing correct to etc folder, save it to etc. If it is navigated to somewhere else, follow the
instructions provided above and select etc folder and then save it.
Now, go back to the actual host file location which is in System32 > Drivers > etc (You would have it already open if you had followed the instructions just like the way
    I have provided)
There you can see 2 host files. One which has already been there and the other one you just saved.
Among the two, one is called “hosts” and the ‘type’ would be ‘file.’ This is the original host file. The other which you have just saved will be named as “hosts.txt” with the
    file type as ‘Text Document.’
Right click on the original host file and select rename. You can even click on that file and press F2. This will enable the option to rename the file. Rename the original host
file as “hostold” and hit enter.
Now, select the second host file which we have saved as a text document and rename it as “hosts.” Make sure that you DELETE the .txt file extension in order to change the type
“Text Document” to “File” and hit enter.
Now, you have successfully saved the host file with your preferences.
You can now delete the file which we renamed as “hostold.”
We are done. You would need to do this process all over if you need to edit the host file again. I know it is difficult, however, it is our own requirement and we have to invest
    few minutes on this.
Enjoy your computer with a great feeling that you have finally edited the host file as per your wish and take it from here. Wish you luck.
Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

  • Unable to edit PDF files in Adobe Acrobat DC

i am unable to edit a file in adobe acrobat dc i have tried with multiple files and everytime i click edit pdf it get a pop up that says adobe acrobat dc has encountered an unknown error however i have been able to edit a few pdf's i tried everything from re downloading a new file to saving it in acrobat reader and nothing is working please help

    Hi imadb,
Since you have the Acrobat Pro DC 30-day trial, please try opening that to edit your PDFs (rather than opening them in Reader, and clicking the Edit PDF button).
If you search your computer, you should have both an Adobe Acrobat Reader DC and and Adobe Acrobat Pro application. They can coexist, but it does make things a little confusing.
If you want to evaluate  Acrobat Pro DC, it's best that you open it directly. That way, you can get the real "lay of the land" with Acrobat before making any purchase decisions.

  • Unable to directly open .xlsx files in sharepoint 2010?

    Hi,
I am Unable to directly open .xlsx files in sharepoint 2010.
Please help me to solve the above problem.

    Hi sudhir,
For enabling anonymous access, you need to enable it at web application level and site collection level.
At web application level: Central Administration->Application Management->Manage web applications->[your web application]->Authentication Providers->Default->Enable anonymous access.
At site collection level: Your top site->Site actions->Site Settings->Site Permissions->Anonymous Access under Permission Tools ribbon->Anonymous users can access : Lists and Libraries.
As you don't want anonymous users to access the linraries of the subsite, you need to break permission inhertance. You need to go to the sub site->Site settings->Site permissions-> clicking Stop inheriting permission. Then click Anonymous Access,
    and select Nothing.
After the above, the anonymous users will not access the subsite.
After breaking perimission inhertance, the sub site will have unique permission, and it will not be affacted by the top site. And for existing users who have permissions on the sub site, their permission is not changed on the sub site.
