Unable to edit info in itunes????

Hi,
I have recently got a new PC, and I am having problems with itunes.
Here is the details:
The hard drive which contains itunes music folder has been put into the new PC has a secondary drive.
I added folder within itunes and all my music is now there.
I am now unable to edit any of the information within itunes.
I right click on a track and select get info, and where I used to be able to edit artist name, track name etc is now just greyed out and I am unable to edit.
Can anyone please help with this
Cheers
Steve

The solution may be as simple as making sure the files have not become read-only during the xfer to the other drive. It happens sometimes when files go from DVD to hard drive or hard drive to network drive. Right-click a file, choose Properties, and remove any checkmark next to "Read-only." You can remove the checkmark from multiple files by selecting them all first, then right-clicking, choosing Properties, and clearing the "Read-only" box.

  • Unable to edit info

Just got a new HP laptop computer running Windows Vista. Since installing iTunes on this new computer I have been unable to edit the info for any of my pre-existing files; the only files I can edit are new ones I have addded since upgrading to my new computer. Have just upgraded iTunes to latest 7.0.2.16 version hoping that would resolve the problem, but it has not. Any ideas on what the problem is?

It's most likely your Vista permissions.

  • Can't Edit Info in iTunes 5

Since I have installed iTunes 5 I can't seem to edit song information. When I select more than one song to edit, it won't let me even choose "Get Info." When I select one song, I can choose "Get Info" but when I actually click on the info I'm not able to edit it at all. Why can't I change my song info?

    Jason,
Launch disk utilities and do a "Repair Permissions" also make sure that you have read/write access to the "iTunes" folder, to all files in there (especially the Library files) as well as to all music files.

  • Unable to edit music on iTunes, help please.

I am having problems editing tracks. I use either iTunes, or Tag & Rename to edit tracks. I had no problems at all in XP doing this. but, I have moved to Vista and now the track if I try and edit it, it's "greyed" out. I cannot edit it with eithger program.
I moved my old iTunes onto my External HD and moved the HD to my laptop.  I then copied the iTunes folder over to Music on the laptop, and it found the HD no problem, copied over playlists, and counts. It syncs without a problem and continues the counts.

It is a bit of a downgrade not being able to edit music details on the phone, but the only solution I've found is to make sure it's right before I drag and drop it onto the phone, then the issue becomes somewhat irrellivant ?
If I have helped at all, a click on the White Star is always appreciated :

  • Unable to edit ipod in itunes

I have a 2nd generation nano which i am able to add songs to but when it is connected to itunes i am unable to delete any songs from the ipod. The ipod library is displayed in a light font and no songs can be selected. If any one has any ideas on how to solve this it would be greatly appreciated as my ipod is full.

    Select the iPod in iTunes.
    Click on the Music tab.
The playlists which are sync'd to the iPod will have a checkmark.
Delete the songs from the playlist(s) you have chosen to sync.
Or select *Manually manage music* on the Summary tab.
Then you will have to ad/delete the songs yourself on the iPod using iTunes.
It will no longer automatically sync.

  • Why can't I edit the info in iTunes?

All of a sudden, I can no longer edit info in iTunes.  I use Windows 7 and have iTunes 10 version3.0 that I just updated.  However, it was doing this with the 2.0 Version as well. I had hoped the 3.0 would resolve it and it hasn’t.
I did not install anything new on my computer.  I just turned it on and this happened.
I followed some advice already given: made sure my Windows was updated, I checked to see if I have full authorization on the iTunes music folder and I do and it is not a read only file. I also have full ownership of all folders.
I am at a loss on how to proceed.  I hope someone can help me.
    Thanks a lot.

If it was purchased from the iTunes store-there is no way to change the info.
If it is not from the iTunes store-should be able to right click on it and select get info and edit it (as pointed out above).

  • Unable to edit information

I just purchased a notebook with Vista 64bit. I have found that I am unable to edit info with Vista but am able to with XP on my desktop. I have not found any threads that helped. If anyone knows of a solution short of not using Vista I would appreciate the feedback.

I finally found the answer in a thread posted in January. Thanks goes out to Katrina S. Here is her reply.
Vista permissions are wonky; checking read-only might not be enough.
*Make sure you have FULL control and OWNERSHIP of those files.*

  • Edit info for songs

When I try to edit info on itunes 7.5, the info is "greyed" and doesn't let me make changes. Any suggestions?

You neeed to be logged in as an adminstrator.
Right click on your iTunes Music folder and slect properties, the the security tab.
You should see a list of users names. Is Your user name on it? If so select it and you should see your permissions. If not, you can add your username.
You need to have full control for your user name.
There is more on setting permissions on the following page, it is for XP, but Vista is similar:

  • Unable to edit track info in iTunes on a Mac Air

    Hello,
I recently switched from a windows PC to a Mac Air. All my music was organizaed on an external hard drive. I have now imported the music in to my iTunes on my Mac Air. I am unable to edit individual track info when I use "Get Info". I tried to look up for permissions on the particular folder and found that they are all set as "Read Only".
Any help in this matter is appreciated.

Go to your Music (media)  folder. The one that holds the actual files.
Click it and press Cmd+I or right click and select "Get Info"
In the Info pane, click the lock to change permissions:
You'll need to tnter your password to make any chnages.
Set ALL permissions to Read & Write
Click the Gear and select "Apply to enclosed items..."
Then click "OK" when asked if you're sure.
Let it apply to everything and THEN try editing the track oinfo.

  • ITunes - cannot edit info

I am unable to make any changes in iTunes. Usually a slow double-click allows me to change Title, Artist, Genre, etc. When I right-click and select get info, the fields are all unavailable.
Is there something I can do?

I just upgraded to windows vista and iTunes 8.0 and had the same problem with all my songs that were originally windows media player songs, all in a separate folder from iTunes. I had iTunes import them all into its library, went to get info to edit and could not. Every field was grayed out. I went to my top level separate folder, clicked properties, clicked the security tab, and clicked 'Advanced". Selected the "permission entry" that matched my computer name (i.e. User (***\User) that had permission set to 'read & execute'. Then clicked 'Edit'. After the stupid vista continue dialog box, I selected the same entry again and clicked 'Edit'. Under 'Allow' in the list of permissions I checked the 'Full Control' box. Then OK, Apply, OK, etc...
Went into iTunes, I can now edit info on all my songs. Please let me know if this helps.

There is nothing that you can do to get rid of the balance on your own. Contact iTunes Store Support and seek their assistance. I believe that they can reset your balance for you.

if my external hard drive is not connected to either of my machines, and I download something onto my iMac and then something different onto my Macbook, where are my machines going to be storing the new downloaded media
when the drive is not connected, +iTunes media folder location+ will default back to <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music/iTunes/iTunes music (or media)
and when I next connect the external hard drive how will I easily get the newly downloaded media onto the external HD
you'd have to point +iTunes media folder location+ back to the external via preferences > advanced > iTunes media folder location, then file > library, organize library > consolidate files
and essentially, to have it easily readable on both machines?
in that case it might be best to copy the entire iTunes folder to the external. then, on each machine, launch iTunes while pressing option on your keyboard. when prompted, click on +choose library+ and navigate to the iTunes folder on the external.
note only one iTunes can access the iTunes library @ a time !
also, make sure the external is mounted on either machine before launching iTunes.

  • HT3814 Why does iTunes on my MacBook Pro not remember/save edited info about CDs? It does on my G4.

I haven't used iTunes in awhile to play CDs. Lately though it is not remembering CD info I put into iTunes. I have been using iTunes since the late 90s. I have always been able to edit info for ANY CD I play on iTunes and that computer would remember that info. Lately my MacBook Pro isn't remembering this info. I am able to edit CDs on my G4 Powerbok and it is remembering the info. (The G4 is using 10.4.11 and iTunes 9.2.1 (5). I am using 10.6.8 and iTunes 10.6.1 (7) on the MBP.) This used to work on the MBP but I haven't dealt with CDs in 6 months or so so I don't know more closley when this behavior changed.)
I've had a go-rounds with Apple Care. Some say I have to import each track for iTunes to remember any edits on that track. I tried that today and that appears to be how things work now. That was not the case up until now. Has iTunes changed how it works?
I realize that iTunes will read file names on the CD if they are burned into the CD. I used Toast for some recent CDs I burned on the MBP awhile ago and voila, those files names are appearing whern I pop the CD in. I cannot edit them so that iTunes remembers them though unless I import whatever track I wanted to edit the info from. OK. That's a step backwards but OK. (I realize I am not editing the info on the CD itself. Once a CD is burned that's impossible, I would only be editing the info that iTunes has about it...) Most of the CDs I have burned do not have track titles as file names.
I know about the CD Info.cidb file. That is where info that I add manually (and info that Gracenote adds, which I also can edit...) gets saved. In the past I could edit ANY CD, regardless of where it came from, and that info would be saved in that file. That is not happening now.
I have moved the CD Info.cidb file to my desktop and edited some info. ITunes is NOT creating a new CD Info.cidb file.
So, has anything changed with iTunes or is there something else going on here? It could be a third-party app or an OS problem.
    Thanks for any help.
    Cheers,
    John L
PS Apple Care is looking into this some more and will call me back next Thursday if not before then. My fingers are crossed that will have some info that is helpful. If I now have to import a track so that I can edit it (and save that info) on a CD, well, so be it but it doesn't seem to be a step forward...
PPS For some reason, Apple put this under the iTunes Store. I would have put it under just iTunes. I forget the page where I asked the title of this question (which has since been edited). It then brought me to this particular forum. I would have moved it if I could...

Basically anything not purchased from iTunes that is on my iPhone 6 will not sync over to my MacBook. I have tried to just manually back it up but only the purchased music will sync over to iTunes.
