Unable to enable disk use

Can someone Help? I am not able to enable the disk use. Won't allow me to click to enable. My setting is on manual manage. Thank you.

Hello there,
"Enable Disk Use" option is greyed out in iTunes because you are manually managing your iPod, which means disk use is already enabled on your iPod because it is a feature of manual management.

Hope this helps.

  • Unable to disable 20gb iPod 'enable disk use' Disc  in iTunes7

    Hello,
i got this problem, when i connected my old 20gb iPod on to my computer which now has iTunes 7 installed i wont be able to turn off "Enable disc use" check button. Why?
Resetting the iPod wont help, restoring the software to iPod wont solve the problem either.
Can anyone help with this one? Or is this setting solid and could not be changed.
    Cheers,
    T.

Do you have the iPod set to manual transfer? That's the reason that the enable disk use option is greyed out and not selectable.
With manual, the default setting is enabled and cannot be changed.

  • All music gone, transferred to 'other', can't enable disk use on iTunes

it seems like there are a lot of people with similar problems but nothing exact..here goes:
-doing research on my macbook and i get a popup from itunes saying that my ipod was disconnected improperly (i didn't touch it and i wasn't even messing around on itunes)
-ipod restarts and reconnects with itunes and i get another pop up saying that "itunes cannot read the contents of the ipod. go to ipod summery and preferences and restore.
-i would just restore it and reload all the music butttttt like an idiot..i dont keep my music in my itunes cause it takes up way too much space and i never used any external hard drive or anything to back my music up (again..idiot..i know)
-so i read though a ton of forums and posts and see that im not the only one that this has happened to and everyone is saying to put it in disc mode, go to removable disk, copy all the music back to my macbook, restore my ipod, and put all the music back on. i also read something about clicking on my ipod icon on my desktop and going under ipod controls and changing some names (i dont konw if that was jsut for windows or what) but i also dont have an option of ipod controls
-the problem with that is that i can put my ipod into disk mode but that does me no good because i can't enable disk use on itunes because literally..my only option when i plug in my ipod is to restore it. under devices on the left hand menu, it just says ipod..not ipod with a bunch of sub categories like music and playlists and stuff..just ipod.
-normally..i would just give up and restore it but when i go to the about section on my actual ipod, it says that i have 50GB of "other" so that means that stuff is definitely still on it.
    -so finally..my main question is:
is there ANY way to enable disk use on my iTunes without doing it through my iPod?..like i explained..when i plug my iPod in..that is not an option. and also..would i benefit from just bringing my laptop and ipod into an apple store and asking for help there or will that just be a waste of time?

The library on the iPod will have been damaged - hence the reason it appears empty, but the media files are still there taking up space and reported as "Other". Check out this post from Zevoneer for some iPod recovery options.

Some of the tools mentioned will require a working library, but I know from experience that you can use the manual recovey method when the library is missing or damaged. If you're struggling for space you probably need to go & buy an external drive before you start. Stick the iPod in disk mode. Hold Menu+Select > 6 seconds (resets iPod) followed immediately by hold Previous & Select > 6 seconds. You can now drag the contents of iPod_Control\Music to your new hard drive. You may need to reveal hidden files & folders. Once they are on your hard drive you can create a new empty library on the drive, then import the files you have reovered and consolidate the imported library so that the files are in a standard artist\album\## track structure rather that the iPod's obscured names.

There is no enable disk use option for iOS Devices.  See this article for instructions on copying videos and photos from your iOS device to your PC.

  • IPod appears on Desktop - enable disk use checked, greyed-out

Each of my daughters has a video iPod--
The "white" one - about 11 months old, now appears on the desktop when connected. iTunes opens, but the choice "enable disk use" is greyed-out, i.e. I cannot un-check this, and each time the iPod icon appears on the desktop.
The "black" iPod-- just a few days old, but essentially the same video iPod-- it does NOT appear on the desktop, and the "enable disk use" writing is NOT greyed-out, i.e. we could "check" this if we wanted.
How to get the "white" iPod to no longer appear on the desktop? I have tried resetting it, but that doesn't seem to change anything.
Also-- is there a reason why this appears on the desktop, and is that a limiting factor for any reason-- or a problem? Really just trying to understand this!
    Thanks for any comments.

If the iPod is set to sync manually, the enable disk use checkbox will always be on, as iTunes doesn't know when you will be done transferring content to the iPod and ready to unplug it. The iPod will appear on a Mac's desktop while iTunes is syncing it or waiting for you to transfer content to it, or when disk use is explicitly enabled and the iPod is plugged in to the computer.

  • "Enable Disk Use" checkbox is grayed out, can't untick.

    Hi,
I just got my new iPod 30 GB video today! I've been reading these discussions, but haven't found an answer for this tiny problem of mine.
"Do Not Disconnect" constantly shows on the iPod screen when it's connected on the computer. Many have suggested ticking off "Enable Disk Use", but here's the problem: it's grayed out, and I can't change it, no matter what. I've gone through iTunes prefs, by right-clicking on the iPod in iTunes and selecting "iPod Options". My system seems to show iPod as a movable disk, but iTunes recognises it and I can easily put music into it, so I guess that isn't a problem (or is it?).
But how could I get my hands on the "Enable Disk Use" checkbox? It just isn't "tickable" now.
    Thanks!
      Windows XP

If you have your iPod set to manual update, the "Enable Disk Use" box will be greyed out and ticked by default, in that case use Safely remove Hardware icon or check this link: "Disconnecting iPod from your computer
    " http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61135
    For Info:
The iPod offers three ways to transfer music from your computer. You can select one of the following update modes from the iPod Preferences menu in iTunes (Edit=>Preferences=>'iPod' tab):
    1) Automatically update all songs and playlists. This is the default mode, in which your entire music library, including playlists, is automatically synced to your iPod. If the music library on your computer exceeds the iPod storage capacity, you are prompted to select a different update method.
    2) Automatically update selected playlists only. With this option, iTunes automatically copies the playlists you have selected to the iPod when you connect it to the computer.
    3) Manually manage songs and playlists. You can also choose to transfer music to the iPod manually. This allows you to drag and drop individual songs and playlists from iTunes to the iPod.

  • ITunes 10 Enable disk use

So I've poked around a bit and tried searching for this, but it appears that I'm the only one having this issue as I can't find any topics on it... am I blind or has the "Enable Disk Use" been removed from iTunes 10? I went to enable this on my iPhone 4 the other day and couldn't find it anywhere. Looked under preferences, under the iPhone settings pages and even tried searching for it via the help menu which usually highlights the option somewhere.
Am I just missing this or did they remove this option in the latest revision? If they did, is there any decent way to enable this by other means?

I don't understand. I've used my iPod touch as a disk drive before, but after I installed the new iOS update the device stopped being discoverable as a folder from Windows Explorer. there's about 15 GB of files on it that I can't access. It's all useless space now, I can't even delete them from my iPod without restoring it...
the iPod touch has never had the option to Enable disk use.
However you thought you were doing it, it was not an option in iTunes unless you used some other application to hack iTunes.

  • Enable disk use and Manually manage music and videos

When I go to Summary, Enable disk use is checked but dim, so I can't change it. Manually manage music and videos is checked and not dim. Is this enough to do so that I can manage the videos I have shot on my Nano from iTunes, or do I have to do it from iPhoto?

    Hello JohnKerr48,
I can manage the videos I have shot on my Nano from iTunes, or do I have to do it from iPhoto?
You have to manage them via a Finder window, through iMovie, or iPhoto. They cannot be managed via iTunes unless you copy them from your Nano onto your Mac and then import them into your iTunes library. For more information, see this Apple support document.

  • [] Enable Disk Use won't work

I have tried changing my iPod options to Enable Disk Use, but whenever I go back to see the options it remains unchecked and my ipod drive won't show up in windows explorer.
Do I have a faulty iPod?. Also I have noticed that if I disable Art Work it still keeps showing album covers when I play music on my ipod, and when I go back to the options again it keeps the Art Work checkbox checked.
I have even restored my iPod see if that would do the trick but it's helpless. Can someone please help me out?

    hi y'all
(sorry pac and CoJeff ... i'm jumping on the pile)
One more thing, when I check the "Enable Disk Use" checkbox and then I right click on my ipod and click on Update, I get this error saying: "The ipod 'iPod' can't be updated. The Disk can not be Read from or Written to"
that may well be relevant. the ipod itunes preferences are mostly stored on the ipod (which is how an ipod in manual mode on one PC can stay in manual mode when it is connected to a different one). so if you're getting a connection problem like that, it could cause problems getting the ipod preference changes to stick.
so as well as pac's suggestion (which is a known cause of your message), try checking on the other possibilities in this document:
"Disk cannot be read from or written to" when syncing iPod or "Firmware update failure" error when updating or restoring iPod

  • Enable disk use to load songs from ipod to computer?

I have music from a desktop and am trying to put all of that music onto my laptop by enableing the disk use. All of the songs are already stored on my ipod. I tried to press "enable disk use" but it is gray and already checked. Plus I already have "manually mange songs and playlists" checked so shouldn't this mean that i can go into file>import>mycomputer and then find my ipod and click on the music files? i know i did this before but I am lost now.
Thank you in advance for your time and help!

the itunes on my desktop at home is registered to my brother's ipod. does this make a difference on how to transfer the songs?
i'm going to tread cautiously here, because there's a couple of different things that you might be thinking of.
if you mean "your brother's ipod is associated with the library on the old PC", then that wouldn't affect the transfer of the song files at all. all that means is that that library on that PC is the only one that his ipod will automatically update from.
if you mean "some of the songs i'm going to move were purchased through his itunes music account, and are authorised to play on that PC", then that wouldn't affect the transfer of the song files. but the first time you played them on the new PC, you'd be asked to authorise that PC for them. that would either take up one of his five authorisations (but you'd be allowed to play them), or, if he's already got them authorised on five different PCs, you wouldn't be able to play them (because you wouldn't be able to authorise them).
for more information of Music Store authorisations, see:
iTunes: About Music Store authorization and deauthorization

  • Is enable disk use on iPod Touch possible?

I need to copy the content on my 16GB 2nd gen. iPod Touch back to my computer which was lost with a HD failure. All of the programs I found that will copy content from iPod to computer need to have "enable Disk Use" checked. I do not have that option listed in iTunes device page. Encrypt backup is where the disk use should be.
Windows 7 shows my Touch as a camera and does not display any files except a picture that is not able to view, even with display all files checked in folder properties. I have installed a few different programs, but they do not "see" the Touch. It does see my iPod video using the same wire to the computer. What can I do, or am I hosed?

If you do a search here others have given links to people in this situation to third party programs that can take info from an ipod touch and place it onto a PC.
I don't have any experience of any of them to know how reliable they are .. which is why people say that backing up is best .. but, some people have posted saying that they have had success with returning information from their ipods to their PC's using them

  • How can I uncheck "Enable disk use" in iTunes for my iPod? The option is grayed out, and permanently checked.

When I plug in my iPod Nano (6th generation) and launch iTunes, the device appears in the sidebar as normal, but the option to check or uncheck "Enable Disk use" in the Summary pane for the iPod is grayed out. Currently, the box is checked, so "Enable disk use " is turned on -- but what I want to do is UNcheck it and turn it off.
But nothing I've tried so far has successfully ungrayed the "Enable disk use" box. Help!
Question: How can I ungrey the "Enable disk use" option in my iPod's Summary panel in iTunes, allowing me to uncheck it?
Alternately, is there any other way to turn off "Enable disk use," using some esoteric workaround? Thanks!

Set it to sync automatically. Disabling that option isn't possible for an iPod set to sync manually, as it shows up as a disk as part of the sync process, and iTunes has no way of knowing when you're done syncing an iPod set to do so manually.

  • How to enable disk use on an iPod in "recovery mode"?

I am trying to enable disk use on my iPod classic 80GB to recover lost files. One day out of the blue, 12 days worth of music vanished from my iPod, and as my laptop that stored all of my music was stolen a few months earlier, I need to manually recover the files by first enabling disk use (at least according to the various tutorials I have read online).  There should be a box you can check or uncheck in the summary of the iPod when it's plugged in, but on my iTunes, all it shows in the summary is "iPod recovery mode" and underneath a "Restore iPod button".  Is the "enable disk use" option not available because it is in recovery mode or am I just missing something?

    AFAIK this is the case...

  • Why can't I enable disk use on my Ipod touch?

I wish to use my ipod touch as an external hard-drive. I have watched videos on how to go about it and they show that there is a greyed out check box that must be checked. This check box does not exist for me. Why not? and is it possible to enable disk use?
MY ipod is an ipod touch 4th generation, 8gb, ios 6.1.6
    Itunes version - 11.1.5

You just be looking at instructions for the older iPods. None of the iOS devices such as the iPod touch have ever supported disk use. There are third-party utilities that purport to provide workarounds to allow such use, but I have no experience with any of them so I can't make any recommendations.
    Regards.

  • Enable disk use on Classic?

My computer went to computer heaven with all its data and applications. I have set up a new computer and would like to sync the 9,000 items on my iPod Classic to iTunes. Unfortunately, it insists that it wants to wipe my iPod clean. Nearly all of the content on the iPod consists of my 600+ CD collection, which I fed, one by one, into iTunes.
The third party software I have found that promises to reconstitute my iTunes Library requires me to enable disk use for my iPod, but I can't find a way to do that. Help?

Summarizing if you don't like to read Instructions and manual.
Sandy, if you dont want to put the iPod in Disk Mode, and use ity as a portable hardisk, but just asking about
the function or benefit of "Enable Disk use"
Normally if I want to add just a song or two from my library or playlist to iPod, I would put the iPod in
    Manually Manage,
then ensure that enable disk use is tick
Drag the song/s from the library to the iPod icon or playlist.
So retaining all the songs in the iPod, this is much faster than Sync, and dont give problem like timeout and freezing iTunes.
    Have a nice day!
