Unable to Enable FileVault - Kernal Panic Screen of Death

Each and every time I attempt to enable FileVault on my new MacBook Pro, the system crashes with the "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button until.." message. The Kernal Panic occurs within a few seconds of clicking the 'Turn on File Vault' button and here's the report log - perhaps somebody can advise.

Not sure if this is related or not to what's going on, but how much free space do you have on the drive right now? To enable FV, you need at least the amount of space your home folder occupies plus a few GB as a safety margin. Not sure if you'd get some sort of notification that you don't have enough space to proceed, or if you'd go straight into a KP or otherwise.
At least, be sure you have enough room to do this. (Note: the link is for 10.5, but imagine it'd be the same.)

  • I'm getting the kernal panic screen when I put in DVD

My iMac G5, 2 GB has been slow, and occasionally getting the "restart your computer" screen. I ran the Apple Hardware Test on it twice. It passed both times, so I decided it must be software. I proceeded to do a clean install of the OS. Now I'm getting the Kernal Panic screen just as the computer recognizes the disk and is about to launch the installer. I've been reading the forums on Kernal Panic. Could be RAM memory. But could it also be the optical drive if its slow to spin at first?
What info on the "Panic" screen would tell me where the problem is?

Your title is a little confusing; are you getting the message ONLY when you put a DVD in, or does it also happen when starting the computer up?
If it's the DVD, is it the OS DVD? Are you sure you are using a PPC DVD and not an Intel DVD? I recall the same panic screen on my own G5 1st gen when I mixed up my Intel DVD with my PPC DVD.
The first line of your panic (panic(cpu 0 caller 0x002DEC28): Unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerMac12.1") was very similar to mine, except mine had "panic(cpu 0 caller 0x002DEC28): Unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerMac8.2"

  • Upgrading my 1ghz Emac G4 to Tiger - kernal panic screen

Hi guys. Fitsyly I apollogise if this has been covered before but please point me in the correct direction if it has.
I have bought a Black DVD install disc for Tiger osx, to upgrade my Emac from 10.3.9. My Emac has a DVD reader/writer...
When I retsart the computer from the disc, I get the kernal panic restart screen, with some white code over the top...
Firstly why is it doing that? Secondly can I upgrade my OS to Tiger or above?

    hello Tom.
Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger system requirements
If you have enough RAM you should be right. If the eMac is fast enough it can even run Leopard.
But to the difficult question of why is it kernel panicking, well there is no simple answer, as it could be any number of things from defective RAM to an aberrant USB device - it is usually hardware.
Here are some links for you to explore.

  • Kernal Panic when updating. Please help

So I have 2 macs an old flat screen G$ and a new 24 screen intel Mac. My new one is fine but I wanted to update my old G4 I already had Mac OSX 10.4.05 on there but I wanted to use 10.4.7 so I could use the latest itunes. I don't have that one hooked up to the Net so I used my 10.7.4 start up disc to update it. However, it went through as normal then crashed giving me the Kernal Panic screen. Aside from a lot of numbers it came up with Panic CPU0 Unable to find driver for this platform. and ended in Panic were hanging here. It also told me to use the power button to restart, I tried this and it comes back to this screen. I can't get the disc out and can't get it to restart. I'd be happy to have the old OSX and have it working. What do I do??
    Please Please Help!

First, if the 10.4.7 disk is not a generic version, then it won't work. The one for your iMac will not install on any other machine. Second, to get the disk out, hold the mouse click down, until the disk pops out.

  • I tried to install a new hard drive using Snow Leopard to back up with Time Machine. When I installed the new HD I installed Leopard (10.5) on it and tried to use time machine to restore the backup I had made using 10.6. Kernel panic screen occurred.

I backed up my system using 10.6 Snow Leopard's Time Machine to an external hard drive. I did this because I purchased a new internal hard drive to upgrade my 2007 White Macbook from 80GB to 320GB. When I installed the new hard drive, I installed 10.4 (Tiger) and then 10.5 (Leopard) and once Leopard was in I tried to use Time Machine to restore my backup from 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and received a kernal panic screen directly after the bootup.
The screen had code asking for 10.6, so does this mean that the computer is searching for Snow Leopard? If so, how can I do this? Will a bootable drive with Snow Leopard on it be able to solve the issue or will I somehow need to find a way to wipe out this new hard drive?
    -Steve

Booting From Snow Leopard Installer Disc
    1. Insert Snow Leopard Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    2. Restart the computer.
    3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
    4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
    5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
    Drive Preparation and Installation
    1. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. After formatting is complete quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.

  • IMac experiencing kernal panic.  What hardware could be at fault?

My 21 inch iMac running Snow leopard with a 1.83 Ghz processor is not functioning properly.  I purchased the computer used from a local university and after a few months of running Leopard it displayed the gray kernal panic screen that says "you need to restart your computer".  I wiped the hard drive and did a fresh instal of Leopard and upgraded to Snow Leopard.  Computer ran fine for a month or so and is now malfunctioning again.
    Symptoms are:
    1. Programs crashing - spontaneous crashing during use or occasionally complete failure to open a program before it quits.  Restarting the computer usually fixes this problem
    2. Hardware (iSight camera and airport card) not recognized.  Restarting the computer sometimes fixes this problem.
    3. Boot failure - either sits at the screen with the apple logo and spinning wheel or gets stuck at the first blue screen.
    4. Computer has not yet displayed a kernal panic screen since reinstalling the OS
Any ideas for what hardware/software might be at fault or a course of action to further diagnose the problem?  Local IT department just gave me the run-around.

  • Kernal panic while using iTunes.???? gulp....!

Ok aloha I was running along smoothly in iTunes after I moved all my music from my iTunes library from my powerbook and in the middle of a song about 5 to 10 mins after this the system crashed to a Kernal panic screen. I cannot start up when I restart or when I insert start up disk. Called Apple and they sent me to the nearest repair shop. Before I go is there any way this isnt hardware, and if not hardware then software problem is my expense!!! Yikes Thank myself I backed up prior. ANY guesses as what this must me?
    ALoha Reid

Frequently, you can't boot off the installer disk because you tried the 'C' key for startup, when in fact the Option (also known as the Alt key) key works better. Also make sure no additional peripherals are connected when you try this. See if that works first. Here's an article on the Option key startup:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106178
Make sure only to use the disk that came with the computer that installs the operating system or a newer retail operating system disk as this article explains:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517
If you can, repair the directory as my FAQ explains:
    http://www.macmaps.com/directoryfaq.html
If you can't, well, you may have a hardware problem. If your machine is under a year old, you might want to purchase AppleCare so that this and future repairs to damage you couldn't have caused will all be covered under both hardware and software causes for another 2 years.

  • Mac mini (07) Kernal panics

    Hello...
My sister was using the mac mini and then it showed up with a kernal panic screen.
I held the power button down and shut it off, but when I rebooted it started beeping.
it only beeped 3 times and blinked the light.
of course I shut down the mac mini.
unplugged everything waited a minute powered it back on and then it started beeping again.
I waited 2 hours later and it got to a weird desktop
it was the default BG with a transparent finder bar.
a window popped up telling me that Mac OS X crashed.
yet again after the window it beach balled and then another kernal panic.
the thing is I video taped it turning on and beeping at startup.
but my apple care has run out (I believe it has been past a year already)
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You might be able to hook it up to another Mac and print from there. Use Target Disk Mode:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
It doesn't need any RAM from the Mini.
If you don't have another Mac, take it to an authorized reseller or an Apple retail store and ask them to put it on a flash drive so you can print it from another machine. Sometimes Mac usergroups may have people who can help you to.
    http://www.apple.com/retail/
    http://www.apple.com/buy/
    http://www.apple.com/usergroups/
Are links you can research those options at.

  • Kernal panic while re-installing OS

I recently bought a new MacPro and now I'm trying to get the old one ready for sale.
I removed the Boot Camp partition and then tried to erase everything on the hard drive using Disk Utility but it wouldn't let me do it.
I then tried to use the original Instal disk to do an erase and install but as soon as it started up I got the kernal panic screen.
Seeing as my old MacPro is a 2006 legacy MacPro but has been upgraded to Snow Leopard am I just creating problems by using my old install disk.

Thanks macbig, I read the article you linked to but couldn't find anything that lent it self to my problem.
I'm only getting the panic when I try to use my old original install disks to do a clean and install.
It could well be my updated video card but I was hoping I would not have to take it out and plug in the old one again.
I guess I will try the SL install disk and see if I can get something to work that way, at this point I have nothing to lose but time.
Like hatter recommended I did have a back up bootable disk for this computer but after I transferred every over to my new one I now use that as a backup to the new one.
I really wasn't worried about losing any data with the old one seeing as I would be fixing it up for sale and reinstalling the OS.

  • Kernal panic when emptying trash

I can't remove files from my external drive without getting the kernal panic screen… What do I do? I've tried everything I can possibly think of, including removing the files from a PC… no luck...

I suggest you try using Disk Utility to Repair Disk Permissions followed by Verify Disk on the external drive.

  • Kernal panic, Safe Booting

I have an old Macbook Pro with a Snow Leopard operating system and a battery on its last legs - I keep it plugged in all the time.
Yesterday, and again today, I got the Kernal panic screen. I tried resetting the PRAM to no avail, and finally got the computer to start up again by doing a Safe Boot twice.
In the first Safe Boot (both times) the kernal panic screen I got upon restarting changed from one with purple and blue vertical lines behind the 4-language-message to a gray screen with the kernal panic message, and in the second Safe Boot (both times), the computer successfully started up. Yesterday, I rebooted the machine after the second successful Safe Boot and it started up normally and worked fine until the next kernal panic.
I know that I probably need to reinstall the operating system, but can someone help me understand where the problem is in my machine?

    Is this what you needed?

  • Kernal Panic when mounting

I have a 3G iPod that crashed while restoring the system. Now when I attach the iPod, I get a Kernal Panic screen and the computer crashes and my iPod display has a folder and an exclmation point. What now?

    Start over.
Open iTunes and set the preferences so that it does not automatically open or upgrade when an ipod is attached.
    Open Disk Utility.
    Connect iPod.
Still running? Good. Delete the iPod partition, then erase the ipod.
Now, open iPod Updater and RESTORE.
If this crashes you, then boot up on your CD, and open Disk Utility - then do the erase and RESTORE thing.
Still having problems. Find a friend with a PC. Connect the ipod and format it (FAT32). Then go back to the mac and delete partition, erase, RESTORE.
    Good Luck

I'm getting Kernal Panic upon booting from Server OSX 10.4 Install DVD Disk.
I wanted to statup from the install DVD to do a repair permissions and repair disk and i'm getting a kernal panic screen. Anyone know why?
Using a Dual 2.3 GHz Power PC G5, OSX 10.4.10, working fine.
Will no longer boot from dvd disk, not even install cds.
Tried other macs same deal, I can't belive that both sets of disks went bad.

    Hi moeminator-
You can start the server in FireWire target disk mode and use the drive in the Power Mac to do the deed.

  • Kernal panics, graphical issues

I installed OS X 10.4.3. I began to experience kernal panics one right after the other. The only way the computer would boot was in safe mode. I Zapped PRAM, performed fsck, reset open firmware. Checked all RAM disabled all non-shipped perifs. I even erased all hard disks, checked them out and reinstalled OS X.
What would happen in reg boot mode, the screen would get all distorted. This would usually happen when a graphic action was taking place. Like a sub-menu coming down from a window (asking for a ok or cancel action). In safe mode this never happens, but the menus are not smooth when the action is taking place in safe mode). When it crashes, a kernal panic screen occurs or i get a frozen blue screen with cursor in upper left of screen. I even installed panther on another hard drive but it did it there too. I have been running OS X since version 10.0.1 and it never did it untill tiger was installed.
I was running in safe mode almost exclusively. Then perchance I booted in reg. mode and the computer seems fine...however, when I run some graphic programs, I get a window that says OpenGL not installed or cannot access.
I did notice that preview will not display any graphic files. when I double click a jpeg file or tiff file...Preview launches but the screen is grey and no file displayed. I can open them in QuickTime or the graphic program (photoshop).
the odd thing is that when I check About this Mac, the graphics card and settings say that QuartzExtreme and core Image is not supported.
UPDATE: I downloaded and installed 10.4.4. Now I can not boot in regular mode and computer will only operate in safe mode now. I have run TechTool Pro, Norton (from the Norton Boot disk, I will not install it on my computer). Now, all of a sudden, Preview WILL display jpeg and other graphic files...Jeez! What the heck is going on???? I have tried several times to reboot to see if computer will boot normally, but to no avail.
I was wondering if I reinstalled the 10.4.4 combo update after deleting some preferences files. Any help you can give me or if you want to see any Console Logs I would be happy to forward them to you.
    Thanks, Al

Hi there...thanks for the tips...These are things I tried countless times before. The only extension, per se I had as a third party item was the Intego NetBarrier extension. I took that out of the startup folder but to no avail. As I thought that my graphics card is going, I shut down the computer, pulled card, RAM etc out, left case open to dissapate any heat. Came back this morning, reinstalled everything...Wow what a difference. I could not see anything on the screen. Total distortion, vertical color lines 4 on left side of screen, pixel break-ups, etc. I rebooted, single user, fsck, open firmware reset, ZAP PRAM, etc. etc. etc. I even took out the RAM and reinstalled one by one, in each slot to eliminate that (it all seems OK on the RAM question). I must have restarted this machine at least 50 times. I have held down the shift key. Sometimes I would get to the point of seeing the log in dispite the garbled screen image. I would log in but with each mouse movement, the screen got progressively worse till I could not read a thing. On a lark I checked the seating of the RAM, my SCSI card, my extra USB ports card AND the video card....when I rebooted without holding down the shift key, it was garbled and froze. I then rebooted and held down the shift key. There were maybe 5 or so horizontal lines scattered through out the screen distorted. When It booted successfully into safe mode. When I moved a window around the screen the pixels corrected themselves. All is clear at this point, however, while in safe mode I can not print, etc. It will not allow me save a printer to save. And also when I am connected to the internet, no NetBarrier protection.
The continual break up of the screen and the correction on screen of a few stray pixels is leading me to think that the card is going. I do appreciate your help. I have owned Mac's since a MacPlus and NEVER had any hardware issue that I could not resolve myself. It is most frustrating to someone who prides himelf in knowing how to resolve a problem.
In addition, I have a program called StillLife. It assembles digital pictures into a movie with Ken Burns effects. When I installed 10.4.3, for some reason, some graphical features were disabled. I get a dialog on launch of this program I get a dialog that says: "Can't Initialize OpenGL". The strange thing is that this program ran fine BEFORE I ran a few software updates after the initial 10.4 install. Now, no go! When this all started happening, when I would open a tiff or jpeg file in preview, the screen would just be grey no image...and low and behold a few days ago...preview displays graphic and pdf files fine....It is driving me nuts...any response or further insights would be appreciated.

  • Kernel Panics, Gray screen of death, and hard drives, oh my!

Last week, while performing multiple tasks on my G4, Safari froze up and completely locked up the entire computer. I rebooted by manually pushing the glowing power button the front of the tower. During reboot, I got the gray screen of death with the "you need to restart your macintosh... by holding down the power button for several seconds" message.
After a couple tries and getting that exact same gray screen of death, I started to worry about all my data.
I took both drives out of the G4 Quicksilver - one, a 500gb Barracuda Seagate (Master/bay 1), the other a 200gb Hitachi (slave/bay 2). I hooked them up to an older G4 and ran DiskWarrior and DiskUtility on both of them. The master drive had serious (>34%) fragmentation, which has since been cleaned up. The slave drive was relatively fine.
    here's my current problem:
    When I hook up:
    1. Just the Master with no jumper pins, the drive runs fine, no problems, all settings and prefs are there, etc.
    2. Just the Master with the correct pin settings, I get the kernel panic screen of death
    3. The Master with correct pin settings and Slave with correct pin settings, kernel panic screen of death
    4. If I swap the Master and Slave, and make the correct pin settings, the booting process starts and then I get a light gray screen with the "ghostbusters/do not enter" circle.
I put the original Slave drive in an external HD firewire enclosure, and it will mount on the desktop after the original Master drive has booted up - BUT - if I have the external drive powered up before I boot the Master, I get a gray screen with nothing on it - no message, nothing but grayscreen.
I've backed up my critical data, but would like to get these two drives back into their normal operating Master/Slave relationship that served them well for the last couple years.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

    New wrinkle:
This morning trying at boot up, the Mac chime sounded, the gray screen w/the apple logo appeared, and then the machine sounded like either the main fan or one of the two drives spun down. Shortly thereafter, I got the prohibitory sign again.
I rebooted and then got something completely different: a black screen with a small blinking vertical rectangle in the top left of the screen, with nothing else happening for a long time, so I manually rebooted and tried to boot into safe mode.
Trying to boot into safe mode gave me the chime, the apple logo, and then the sound of either the fan or drive spinning down and leaving me at the prohibitory sign once again.
Finally I option-booted to the slave drive and upon startup, received the following crash report, which might as well be in Swahili as far as my being able to make sense of it:
